Mark Steele began working on ‘The History of the Jesuits and the Arts’ in September, 2013. His sketches for the painting show a crude map of the world inspired by his research into the remarkable life of Ignatius of Loyola, who used painting, sculpture, music, illustration, writing, theatre and innovative architecture, to spread the Jesuit vision around the entire globe. His interpretation shows an aerial perspective which transports the viewer on a journey across all seven continents along a route that Ignatius began in Spain and continues to this day at Regis Jesuit and around the world.
