AYOGA-CENTEREDEDUCATION Yogaisacoreelementofourprogramandisincorporatedintoeverycourseinthecurriculum.Yogateachesethics,properbodymechanics,self-careasatherapist,increasesbodyawareness,andisavaluabletooltohelpclientsbothonandoffthetable.Theyoga-centerededucationofferedbytheAshevilleSchoolofMassage&Yogaisidealforstudentswhowantanintroductiontoyogaorwhoappreciatetheuseofyogaasateachingtool.Thepracticeofyogaasana(postures),pranayama(breathwork),andmeditationwillhelpstudentstodevelopakeensenseofbodyawareness,todeepentheirunderstandingofanatomyandkinesiology,andtolearnproperbodymechanicsforinjuryprevention.Studentswillalsobecomefamiliarwithyogicpracticestohonetheirabilitytofocus,ground,andcenter.Theywillbeencouragedtousethesetechniquesfortheirownself-careaswellastopassalongthisself-careknowledgetotheirclients.Interestingly,theethicsofancientyoga(yamasandniyamas)aresimilarandcomplementarytothemodernethicalstandardsforthemassageandbodyworkprofession.Anin-depthstudyoftheyamasandniyamaswillstrengthenstudents’respectandunderstandingofethicsintheirfield.
SPECIALFEATURES SELF-CARE&MINDFULNESS:Throughouttheprogram,studentswilllearnandpracticetechniquesforself-careasamassagetherapist.Self-careincludespracticestopreventburnout,bodycarestretches,nutrition,meditationandenergybalancing,somaticpsychologyprocesses,andstrategicplanningandgoalsetting.
Theseclasseswillbededicatedtoprocessesofrichself-discoverythroughyoga,meditation,journaling,andgroupdiscussion.Mindfulnessclassesfocusontheenergeticconnectionofthemindandbody,whileself-careclassesfocusonthepracticalapplicationofself-careindailylife.YOGA:Yogaisusedasateachingaidineverycourseinthecurriculum.CUSTOMDESIGNEDFACILITY:1000+square-footclassroom,6privatetreatmentrooms,kitchen,zengardenpatio,andfreeparking.FLEXIBLECLASSHOURS:RegularclassesareheldMondaythroughWednesdayfrom9-5,allowingstudentstohaveampletimeforworkandstudy.PRIVATEINSTRUCTION:StudentswillmeetprivatelywithstaffmembersthroughouttheprogramintheSupervisedStudentClinicsetting.Duringthese
one-on-onesessionsstudentsreceiveguidance,gainconfidence,andhavetheopportunitytodiscusstheirquestionsandconcernsastheyprogress.
CURRICULUM Oneclasshouristheequivalentoffifty(50)minutesofanyoneclockhourinwhichthestudentparticipatesinalearningactivityinthephysicalpresenceofastaffmember.

PROGRAMOVERVIEW Thecurriculumisdesignedtogivestudentsasolidfoundationinthefundamentalsofmassageandbodyworktherapy,supportedbyanin-depthunderstandingofthesciencesbehindmassage:anatomy,physiology,kinesiology,andpathology.
FUNDAMENTALTHEORY&PRACTICE OFMASSAGEANDBODYWORKTHERAPY1&2-286HOURS
Inbothofthesecoursesstudentsaretaughtthehistory,theoryandpracticeofvariousmodalitiesofmassageandbodyworktherapy.Bytheendoftheprogram,studentswillhavetheabilitytogiveprofessionalqualitymassagesinavarietyofsettingswhileaddressingawiderangeofconditions.
1. ThefirstsemestergivesstudentsabasicintroductiontoSwedishmassageandwillinclude:thehistoryofmassage;theeffects,benefits,indications,andcontraindicationsofmassage,hygiene,sanitation,andsafety;bodymechanics,therapistself-care,howtotouch,andjointmovements.Inthe2ndhalfofthesemesterstudentswilltaketheirSwedishskillstoanewlevelinthecontextofdeeptissuemassage,chairmassage,prenatal/geriatricmassage,sportsmassage/hydrotherapyandtroubleshooting.
2. The2ndsemesterbeginswithanintroductiontotheclinicaltechniquesoftriggerpointtherapyand
myofascialmassage.Herestudentswilllearntoconfidentlyaddressvariouspathologiesofthebody.ThenstudentsareintroducedtotheeasternmassagetheoryandtechniquesofShiatsumassageaswellasreflexology,Ayurvedictheory&treatments,andCraniosacralbodywork.Studentsendthesemesterpracticingintegrativemassagetechniquesaswellasawrittenfinal.Studentswilllearnandpracticeyogatechniquesandspatreatmentsforself-caretorejuvenate&preventburnout.
WESTERNSCIENCESFORMASSAGE-152HOURS Inthesciencecoursesstudentsexplorethestructure,function,andpathology(40hours)ofeverysysteminthehumanbodyfromaWesternperspective,withparticularemphasisonthemusculoskeletalsystem.ThecourseswillparalleltheFundamentalTheory&PracticeofMassageandBodyworkTherapyandprovidestudentswithcrucialinformationtounderstandandapplythemassagetechniquestheyarelearning.Thesecoursesarehighlyexperiential;ourstudentsenjoylearninganatomy,physiology,pathologyandkinesiologywiththeuseoflecture,discussion,palpation,yogaandmovement,andcasestudies.WesternScienceformassagewillalsobecoveredinthesecondsemesterYogacourse(12hours)inwhichstudentswillbecomemorefamiliarwithcommonmusculoskeletalpathologiesandtheyogapostureswhichrelievethem.
ENERGETICANATOMY-60HOURS Thissubjectwillbecoveredinthreecourses:FundamentalsofEnergyAnatomy(32hours);Mindfulness(16hours);andYoga(12hours).IntheFundamentalsofEnergyAnatomy,studentswilllearnaboutthesubtleenergeticpoints(marmani)inthehumanbodywhichcorrespondtothe7mainenergeticcenters(chakras).Throughdiscussion,palpation,asana,pranayama,andmeditation,studentswillgainafirsthandexperienceofthepotentialphysical,mental,emotional,andspiritualimpactoftouchingthesepointsduringbodyworksessions.InMindfulness,studentsexplore.theintersectionofthoughts/beliefsandenergyandhowmanagementofthatintersectionaffectsourabilitytogroundandcenter.InYoga,studentswilllearnpracticaltechniquestocreate,change,andmaintainenergeticboundariesappropriateinthemassageprofession.

SOMATICPSYCHOLOGY-24HOURS Thiscreativeandinformativecoursehighlightselementsofbody-centeredpsychologyincludingdynamicsofclient/therapistrelationship,communicationskills,andboundaryfunctions.
BUSINESSPRACTICES&MARKETING-28HOURS Thispartoftheprogrampreparesstudentsforthebusinessaspectsofacareerinmassagetherapy.Topicsinclude:recordkeeping,marketingstrategies,jobsearch,taxes,contracts,professionalorganizations,strategicplanningandgoalsetting.
SUPERVISEDSTUDENTCLINIC-100HOURS Throughouteachsemestertheschoolopensitsdoorstothepublicforoursupervisedstudentmassageclinic.Thisgivesstudentsanopportunitytotesttheirskillsinasupportiveclinicalenvironment.
PROFESSIONALETHICS-10HOURS&NCRULESANDLAWS-6HOURS TheseclassesarededicatedtoprofessionalethicsandtheNCrulesandlawsgoverningmassageandbodyworktherapists.
COMMUNITYSERVICEPROJECTS-5HOURS StudentsarrangeontheirowntospendtwodayssharingtheirmassagetherapyskillswiththecommunityofAsheville.Studentselecteithertoparticipateinteacher-ledvolunteerprojectsorgetpermissionforasupervisedcommunityoutreachprojectoftheirowndesign.
OPENINGDAY-4HOURS Wededicatethesehourstocommencementofthisimportantperiodofeducationandselfdiscovery.
DESCRIPTIONOFFACILITIESANDLEARNINGRESOURCES Ourschoolresidesinthelocals’favoritesectionofAshevilleonhaywoodroadinwestAsheville.ThisareaisfulloftheculturethatdefinesAshevilleasaspecialdestinationintheUnitedStates.Rightoutsideour“urbanZen”facilitystudentscanwalktofindlocal,organicfood,uniqueshops,andnottobemissedmusicvenues.Ourspacious1,000+square-footclassroomallowsstudentstoeasilymaneuveraroundmassagetablesandspreadoutforyogaclasses.Outbackisagardenpatio,whichistheperfectplacetogetfreshairduringbreaks.Ourkitchenettemakeslunchandbreakssimpleandeasywitharefrigerator,microwave,filteredwater,andinstanthotwaterfortea.Sixprivatetreatmentroomscompletethemassageschoolexperiencebyprovidingaprofessional,privateplaceforoursupervisedstudentmassageclinic.Thestudentlibraryhousesmanyreferencebooks,periodicals,andaudiobookstosupportstudentsastheylearn.

SCHOOLCALENDAR&SCHEDULEOFCLASSES Our675-hourprogramwilllast6monthsandbedividedintotwosemesters.Wewillobservethefollowingholidays:the4thofJuly,Thanksgiving(andtheWednesdaybefore),ChristmasEveandDay,andNewYear’sEveandDay.Ifaclasshappenstofallononeoftheholidaysitwillbemade-upthenextavailableweekday.Intheeventofbadweather,studentsshouldcalltheschooltofindoutaboutschoolclosings.Ifclassesarecancelledamessagewillberecordedontheoutgoingvoicemail.Theschooloffersthiscertificationprogramtwotimesayear.StudentselecttojointheprogrambeginninginAprilorOctober.RegularclassesareheldMondaythroughWednesdayfrom9a-5p.OursupervisedstudentclinicisheldThursday-Saturday.Studentssignuptodo20clinicshiftsthroughouttheprogram.Clinicshiftsareeitherfrom10:45a-3:45por3:45p-8:45p.

AccordingtoNCLaw,theNorthCarolinaBoardofMassageandBodyworkTherapymaydenyalicensetopracticemassageandbodyworktherapyifanapplicanthasacriminalrecordorthereisotherevidencethatindicatestheapplicantlacksgoodmoralcharacter.
ACADEMICPOLICIES
GRADINGSYSTEM Thefollowinggradeindicatorsareusedtomeasureacademicperformance:P=Pass,F=Fail,I=Incomplete.StudentsmustearnaPinallunitstocompletetheprogram.Agradeof70%orgreaterisconsideredpassing.Studentswhofailtomaintaina70%averagemaybeplacedonacademicprobation.
MAKEUPWORKANDINCOMPLETEGRADES Studentsarerequiredtocompleteallassignments,exams,andotherworkineachclass.Ifclassorworkismissed,thestudentmustmakearrangementswiththeinstructortocompleteworktotheinstructor’ssatisfaction;thismayincludeadditionaloutsidemake-upworkandone-on-oneinstructortutorials($50-$60/hr).Anincompletemaybegrantedincertaincircumstancesatthediscretionofthecourseinstructor.IntheeventofanIncomplete,studentshavesixmonthsfromthedatethegradeisissuedtocompletetheassignments.AfterthatperiodtheDirectorwilldecidewhethertoaccepttheworkorrequireadditionalhoursofinstructortutorials.

SATISFACTORYACADEMICPROGRESS Ifastudentattendsallclasses,receivesa“P”averageonallquizzes,assignments,andexams,andparticipatesinallaspectsofeachclass,heorshewillbeingoodacademicstanding.Progressineachclassisreportedattheendofeachsemester.Ifastudentreceivesan“F”averageinanycourse,heorshewillberequiredtocompletethetutorialsandcourseworknecessarytomasterthematerialnecessaryfora“P”average.
TRANSFEROFCREDITPOLICY TheAshevilleSchoolofMassage&Yogadoesnotacceptcreditfromanyotherinstitutions.
GRADUATIONREQUIREMENTS Studentswillreceivea675-HourCertificateofAchievementfromtheAshevilleSchoolofMassage&Yogawhenheorshecompletethefollowingrequirements:
1. Completethefull675-Hourprogramwitha70%passingaverage2. Fulfillallfinancialobligationstotheschool
ATTENDANCE Attendanceandpunctualityaremandatory.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttomasteranymissedclassmaterialandcompleteanymissedclassassignments.Studentswhoarriveafterrolehasbeentakenorleavebeforeclasshasbeendismissedwillberecordedasabsentforthatclass.Itisatthediscretionofeachinstructorhowmanyclassesmaybemissedbeforeastudentwillberequiredtomakeupworkwithaone-on-onetutorial($50-$60perhour).Ifastudentisabsentforatotalof10classesduringthecourseoftheprogramheorshewillbeputonprobation.Studentswhoareabsentforatotalof16classeswillberequiredtoprovideawrittenandoraldefensetoavoiddismissalfromtheprogram.
LEAVEOFABSENCE UndercertaincircumstancesaleaveofabsencemaybegrantedbytheDirector.Requestsmustbemadeinwriting,andaninterviewwillberequired.Alldecisionsregardingleave,includingthenewtimeframethattheprogrammustbecompleted,areatthesolediscretionoftheDirector.Iftheprogramisnotcompletedinduetime,thestudentwillbedismissedfromtheschool.
CODEOFCONDUCT Studentsareexpectedtoconductthemselvesinawaythatsupportsthemissionandcommunityoftheschool.Personalandprofessionalintegrityareessential.Studentsmaybewarned,placedonprobationindefinitely,suspended,ordismissedforviolationsthatinclude(butarenotlimitedto)thefollowing:
● FailuretoadheretotheCodeofEthicsandStandardsofPracticeformassagetherapists● Attendingclassesorpracticingmassageundertheinfluenceofdrugsoralcohol● Acceptinganyformofcompensationformassageservicesprovidedasastudent(aviolationofNClaw)● Physicalharmorthreatofphysicalharmtoanyone● Harassmentofanykindwhichgoesbeyondtheboundariesofprotectedfreespeechandwouldlikely
causeviolenceorunrest● Theftordamageoftheschool’soranotherstudent’sproperty● Academicdishonesty,includingplagiarism,cheating,ormisrepresentingtheworkofothers’asone’s
own● Healthissuesthatwouldinterferewiththepracticeofmassagetherapy

DISCIPLINARYACTIONS Beforeanydisciplinarymeasuresaretakenwithastudent,theDirectorwillinformthestudentofthesituation,andgivetheopportunityforstudentinputbeforedecidinguponacourseofaction.
● Awrittenwarningwillinformthestudentthatheorshemayfacemoreseriousconsequencesifheorshedoesnotfulfillspecificrequirementstokeepcompliancewithschoolpolicies,procedures,orstudentconductpolicies.
● Astudentplacedonprobationmaycontinueintheprogramonaconditionalbasis.ThelengthandconditionsoftheprobationareatthediscretionoftheDirector.
● Whenadismissalisissuedtoastudent,heorshemustceaseallparticipationintheprogram.Ifastudentfailstomeetthetermsandconditionsofprobation,heorshewillbedismissed.
APPEALS Adismissalmaybeappealed.WithinoneweekofthenotificationofthedismissalastudentwishingtofileanappealmustprovidetheDirectorwithawrittenexplanationfortheappeal,aswellasanyneworrelevantinformationpertainingtotheoriginaldeterminationofdismissal.TheDirectorwillreviewtheinformation,conductfurtherinterviewsifnecessary,anddecidetoletthedismissalstandorchangethedismissaltoprobation.TheDirectorwillgrantthisdecisionwithintwoweeksoftheappealrequest.
REINSTATEMENTAFTERDISMISSAL Atthetimeofdismissalthestudentwillbenotifiedifreapplicationwouldbewelcomeaswellastheconditionsthestudentwouldberequiredtomeetbeforebeingconsideredforreadmission.Ifthestudentchoosestoreapplyandisaccepted,heorshewillbenotifiedofthecourseandfinancialrequirementsatthattime.

WORKSTUDYSCHOLARSHIP Theschooloffersafew$1,500work-studyscholarshipsperclass.Thestudentsselectedwillberequiredtovolunteernolessthantwohoursperweekattheschooldoingoddjobssuchas:straighteningandcleaningtheschoolpremises,restockingsupplies,andwateringtheplants.Inadditiontocleaningtheschoolaftereachclassday,theworkstudystudentswillberequiredtohelpoutwithvariousschoolprojectsupto6hourspermonthwhiletheyareintheprogram.Theseprojectswillbescheduleduptoamonthinadvance,andwewilldoourbesttoaccommodatestudent'sschedules.
