“Stub” Newell, 84, of 13 MainSt., passed away Tuesday (June 1,2010) at the Hornell Gardens.Born in Hornell, Jan. 10, 1926,the son of James E. and MargaretDonnelly Newell, he was a life-long area resident. Stub was amember of the Bath Elks Lodge,and a former member of the Ark-port Fire Department. Early in hiscareer he co-owned a sawmillwith Fred Johnson, of which wasstill his most talked about accom-plishment from the past. He alsowas a potato farmer with LeeSchultheis, and retired from SJGroves in Syracuse as an Equip-ment Transporter in 1988. Stubwill be remembered for frequent-ing local coffee shops, as a joke-ster, being very social, a lover of

animals, especially dogs and drafthorses, and an incredible familyman.He was predeceased by his par-ents; his wife, Jean LawrenceNewell in 1979; his sister, HelenYoung; and brother, ArthurNewell.He is survived by his daughter,Nancy (Jim) “Fritz” Ells of Camp-bell; a son, Thomas (Ruthie)Newell of Hornell; three grand-children, two great-grandchildrenand his dog companion, Saman-tha Jane.Friends wishing to send a remem-brance may visit www.brow-nandpowersfuneralhomes.com.The family is being assisted byChester A.
