Eligibility for the Old Age Security pension and the Guaranteed Income SupplementThe Government of Canada proposes to gradually increase the age of eligibility for the OAS pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) between the years 2023 and 2029, from 65 to 67. People currently receiving OAS benefits will not be affected by the proposed changes. The Government of Canada also proposes to gradually increase the ages at which the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor are provided, from 60-64 today to 62-66.

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)People getting the Old Age Security pension who need financial help may be eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplements (GIS). To find out if you are entitled for GIS you must fill out a GIS application form. An application for GIS is mailed, at your request, once your Old Age Security Pension is approved for payment.

Voluntary deferral of the Old Age Security pensionThe Government of Canada also proposes a voluntary deferral of the Old Age Security (OAS) pension that will give people the option to defer take-up of their OAS pension by up to five years past the age of eligibility, and subsequently receive a higher, actuarially adjusted pension.

The Allowance BenefitsA 60 to 64-year-old spouse or common-law partner of a person who is getting OAS may be able to get Allowance Benefits. The spouse or common-law partner must meet residence requirements and the couple’s income must be within set limits. You must fill out an application each year if you still need Allowance Benefits, otherwise payment will be discontinued.

Allowance for SurvivorsFinancial help is offered to the legal or common-law spouse; the survivor must be 60 to 64 years old and meet both residence and income rules.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP)The Canada Pension Plan offers retirement pensions, surviving spouse benefits and disability benefits. If you are at least 60 years of age, you

may be eligible for full or partial CPP retirement benefits, provided you have contributed to the plan.

A person who has turned 60 years of age may choose to begin receiving CPP benefits at that age. The CPP adjusts the amount of your pension by 0.5% for each month before or after your 65th birthday from the time you begin to receive your pension. The adjustment is permanent. This means that if you choose to start your pension early, the payment does not increase when you reach 65. For example, if you start your pension at 60, your monthly payment is 30% lower than if you wait until you’re 65. However, by starting it sooner, you will likely receive it for a longer time. If you start your pension at 70, your monthly payment is 30% higher than if you had taken it at 65. You may be able to share your Canada Pension Plan benefits with your spouse or common-law partner. You must apply to get these benefits.

PassportsPassports are valid for 5 years now. Effective July 1, 2013, a new 10-year ePassport was introduced with new fees for 5 and 10-year passports. Persons born in Canada must submit an original birth certificate. Those born outside of Canada must submit an original certificate of citizenship. Unlike the General Application Process, the Simplified Renewal Application Process does not require applicants to submit documentary evidence of citizenship (birth certificate, citizenship card, etc.) or provide supporting identification. The application form is shorter and no guarantor declaration is necessary. The Government of Canada continues to recommend that travellers carry a valid Canadian passport for all visits abroad, including the United States. A passport is the only universally accepted identification document and it proves that you have a right to return to Canada. Canadians are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid peak periods. Canadian citizens require a passport to enter the United States at land ports of entry as of June 1, 2009.Service Location – BrockvilleService Canada CentreThe Fuller Building14 Courthouse Avenue, Main FloorBrockville, ONThis office does not accept all types of applications

Living WillsA Living Will is a document that states your wishes regarding consent to or refusal of specific treatment. A Living Will is different from a Last Will and Testament because a Living Will addresses your health care, whereas a Last Will and Testament deals with matters of property. Both documents are essential for every adult. The Living Will allows you to direct your family, physician, and others about your health care choices, based on your own values and beliefs. A completed Living Will should be very specific as to what type of health care choices you wish in end of life situations. An example of what a Living Will addresses includes whether the person wishes to be hooked to a ventilator or respirator. A complete Living Will kit with instructions for how to complete the form is available from Dying With Dignity at the address below.

What is an Enduring Power of Attorney for Personal Care? The Power of Attorney for Personal Care or Health Care is a critical document to have should you be facing a health care crisis. There may come a time when you are unable to communicate your wishes or appreciate the implications of some decisions. A Power of Attorney for Personal Care allows you, in advance, to appoint an individual or individuals to make appropriate decisions on your behalf.

G.R.A.N.D. (Grandparents Requesting Access N’ Dignity)Ottawa ChapterThe relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is priceless! This bond is special, providing a sense of heritage and continuity in today’s rapidly changing society. Yet today, factors such as broken marriages, divorce, death and other circumstances often destroy this mutually important relationship. Many grandparents lose access to their grandchildren in which case both the grandparents and children suffer.

G.R.A.N.D. works to:• Provide emotional support to grandparents

who, for one reason or another, have been denied access to their grandchildren.

• Make the public and professionals aware of this ill in our society.

• Influence Provincial Family Law to recognize the interest that grandparents have in their grandchildren’s well-being.

Aims of the G.R.A.N.D. are:• Support system• Best interest of the child• Mediation• Public education and awareness• Prevention through family life education• Changes in the law• Specific recognition of grandparentsFor membership information and meetings call:

Community Health Centres~ a place where everyone matters!

At the 73 Community Health Centre’s across Ontario, the health and well-being of every individual, every family, every community matters! In our area, four Community Health Centres (CHCs) work closely together to provide a full range of primary health care and health promotion programs and services. They are: Country Roads Community Health Centre (in Portland); Merrickville District Community Health Centre (in Merrickville); the North Lanark Community Health Centre (located in Lanark Village); and the Smiths Falls Community Health Centre in Smiths Falls.

Community Health Centres are an effective and unique model of primary health care where an inter-disciplinary team of health care professionals work together to respond to people’s individual health concerns. At all CHC’s in our area, this team includes: doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, social workers, chiropodists, respiratory therapists, health promoters and community developers.

In addition to primary care services, CHC’s also offer a wide range of free health promotion, education and prevention programs to address the broader health needs of the people and the communities they serve. In most cases, you do not have to be a client of the CHC in order to access these programs. While each CHC has their own specific group programs based on the unique needs of their community, they often include groups where people: learn how to manage their diabetes, asthma and other chronic conditions; get support to quit smoking; participate in community-based exercise classes, walking groups or yoga classes; learn relaxation, meditation and other techniques for stress reduction; and learn how to cook and purchase healthy foods on a budget.

For a current and comprehensive list of programs and services offered at each of the CHC’s in our area, contact each directly.

Foot CareOlder people often find it difficult to reach their feet and therefore have trouble caring for them. Simple procedures such as nail cutting can usually be performed by caregivers. Elders with diabetes or circulation problems, however, should have a podiatrist or chiropodist attend to their complete foot care.

Most Home Support Programs and Para-Med Health Services sponsor weekly footcare clinics. For clients who cannot attend the clinics, agencies can arrange in-home footcare.

To make an appointment, please contact the home support agency nearest you.

The Kingston District CNIB Service Centre operates a full service clinic in Brockville on the third Monday of each month (except holidays) 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Wall Street United Church by appointment only. Date and location

may change occasionally; please check with the Kingston office. The Human Resources Branch administers the Blind Persons’ Rights Act. This Act states that blind persons shall not be denied services, accommodation or facilities or experience discrimination because they keep or are accompanied by a guide dog. As proof of entitlement to the Act’s provisions, the branch issues an identification card, with a picture of the blind person and the dog, upon the successful completion of an approved training program.

Tips for Vision ProblemsProper Lighting• Ensure bulb wattage is high enough for

the particular area.• Have several, evenly distributed light

sources around all rooms.• Nightlights should be placed in

hallways, the bedroom and the bathroom.

• Consistent lighting minimizes shadows.• Dimmer switches and tri-light bulbs will

control light intensity.• It is easier if switches are on the outside

of the room so that you do not have to fumble in the dark.

• Put intense light at the top and bottom of staircases and steps.

Eliminate Glare• Use low-gloss wax on furniture and do

not wax floors.• Minimize use of fluorescent lights

as they produce more glare than incandescent lights.

• Blinds or sheer curtains should be used in brightly sunlit rooms.

• Shiny furniture or counter surfaces should be removed or covered.

• Paint walls with matte-finish paint.

As people age, their dentures don’t change, but their mouths do. If you have dentures, they should fit and you should be wearing them. Proper care and regular dental visits are important factors for keeping your mouth healthy and your dentures in good shape.

Problems from Poor Fitting DenturesWith age, the gum ridges in our mouths can shrink, causing dentures to become loose. Bone can also shrink, causing jaws not to line up properly. Loose dentures can cause sore spots in your mouth as well as stomach problems from not being able to chew food properly. A loose denture could also cause changes in your facial features.

When do Dentures Need to be Replaced? If your dentures are in a drawer because they just “don’t feel right”, they are loose or make sore spots in your mouth, you should see a denturist to have them evaluated and possibly adjusted, relined or remade. If the teeth in your dentures are considerably worn out, talk to your denturist about having some new ones made. It is also important to continue with regular dental visits to make sure your teeth are fitting properly as well as to be examined for any signs of oral cancer. Your denturist can tell you how often you need to come in for check-ups.

Caring for your DenturesProper care can keep your dentures and your mouth in good shape. You should brush your dentures every day with a soft bristled toothbrush to remove food and plaque. The same goes for your gums, and tongue.

When you are not wearing your dentures, they should always be kept in water (not hot) or in a denture solution, recommended by your denturist.

Don’t Repair Dentures YourselfWhen a denturist repairs or adjusts dentures, he uses dental materials that are made specifically for dentures and only available to Denture Clinics. Over-the-counter products usually contain chemicals that will actually harm your dentures and cause greater damage. Only your denturist should adjust or repair your dentures.

Implant Supported DenturesImplant supported dentures are an alternative for a more permanent option. An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants. Before any work is done, you will visit either a dental specialist called a prosthodentist or a general dentist who has advanced training in the placement and restoration of implants.

Don’t forget to Smile! With proper care and regular dental visits, your dentures should fit good and stay in good shape for a long time. Your denturist will let you know when they need to be replaced. In the meantime, take care of your dentures, visit your denturist regularly and get out there and smile.

FEATURE | CPHC Lifeline program provides not just peace of mind, but confi dence

in being able to live independently

Peace of mind, and freedom in your own home – Community Primary Health Care Lifeline program offers not only the subscriber, but family members and friends the reassurance that help is available 24 hours a day. The personal response service gives subscribers the confidence to lead active and independent lives in their own homes. The program provides not just peace of mind, but early intervention, and reassurance – all through the simple push of a button. From gardening, walking to the mailbox, the subscriber will have the freedom of knowing should they fall or feel ill, that help is not far. When help is needed, at any time of day, the subscriber needs only to press the Personal Help Button which is worn as a necklace or a wrist strap. Once pushed, the Personal Help Button activates the communicator which is located in the subscriber’s home, usually in the living room or bedroom. The communicator has a range of approximately 250’.Lifeline Monitors are highly trained and are able to offer the caring reassurance subscribers need. If assis-tance is needed the Lifeline Monitor will call one of the subscribers’ responders. Responders are family and/or friends that have a key to the home in order to gain access in an emergency situation. If however, none of the responders are home, Lifeline does not wait - they will immediately call emergency ser-vices to go to the subscribers’ home to offer assistance. The program offers to subscribers the CarePartner Communicator, a small, very simple to use, communicator that works along with their current telephone. The rental cost for the CarePartner is $40 per month, includ-ing monitoring. The unit is equipped with RSVP which will allow the subscriber to answer the phone by simply pressing the Personal Help Button while the phone is ringing. Subscribers are finding this feature invaluable since they sometimes expe-rience mobility problems. There is also a new Auto Alert Button which is worn only around the neck. It will automatically send a signal to the response centre if the subscriber falls and cannot push the button.

This new button is an extra $8 per month. Lifeline with Auto Alert is designed to detect real falls. If the button detects a fall and the subscriber is unable to push the button, the Auto Alert button will automatically send a help call to the Response Centre within one minute. If the button detects a fall and the subscriber is able to get up within 30 seconds, a help call will not be sent. When a falls signal is received at the Lifeline Response Centre, an ambulance will automatically be called, and then a responder. The button knows the difference between a real fall and normal everyday activities - i.e. bending over to pick up an item on the floor should not be detected as a fall.Currently there are approximately 1,180 subscribers throughout Kingston, Greater Kingston area, Leeds Grenville and Lanark Counties. The nonprofit program began in 1987.Peace of mind is priceless. Call today for more informa-tion 613-342-9991 or 1-877-565-0008, or visit http://www.cphcare.ca/lifeline.

FEATURE | Consult a hearing loss specialist Paul Dunlop has all the latest improvements

Paul Dunlop Hearing Aid Service has been serving the community for 33 years.

It’s never easy when one suspects a loss of hear-ing. It’s not something that happens suddenly but can occur gradually, eventually making it diffi cult to hear a conversation in a crowded room or listen to the television without having to turn the volume well up.

The decision to consult a hearing loss expert to determine if a hearing aid is needed also is no simple matter. For some, even admitting there is a problem is a hurdle they have trouble overcom-ing.

For 33 years, Paul Dunlop has been greeting individuals, assessing their needs, then fi tting them with equipment that ultimately brings the world back to them. Rarely, he says, do people want hearing aids. But after experiencing the im-proved quality of life these small pieces of modern technology can bring, they’re happy with their decision.

You are invited to have your hearing tested at Paul Dunlop Hearing Aid Service, located at 31 William St. E. in Smiths Falls. If you hear but don’t always understand what people are saying—people seem to mumble—you have to ask people to repeat—you have trouble understanding when more than one person is talking or when there are other noises, please come in for a consultation.

Even people now wearing a hear-ing aid or those who have been told nothing could be done to help them, may benefi t from the latest improvements.

“It’s continually improving,” Mr. Dunlop says of the technology being created to improve one’s hearing.

While many people are reluctant at fi rst, they soon realize their value and return to Dunlop for regular assessments and upgrades when needed.

If you have questions about your hearing and whether a hearing aid might be right for you, please call 613-283-7421.

Do you miss key words in conversations, or frequently ask people to repeat themselves? Do you often need to turn up the volume on the TV or radio? Is carrying on a conversation over the phone diffi cult for you? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, ListenUP! Canada recommends you get your hearing checked be a certifi ed hearing professional.

ListenUP! Canada’s Chief Audiologist, Jillian Price explains, “One of the earliest signs of hearing loss is diffi culty hearing in background noise. Having to ask people to repeat themselves or saying “pardon” frequently is another common sign that some hearing loss may be present.”

But what if you aren’t experiencing these symptoms?

“You should have a hearing check beginning at the age of 50, or earlier if a problem is suspected,” explains Price. “Even if a hearing loss is not a major concern, establishing a baseline is very benefi cial and allows you and the hearing professional to track changes over time. This is most helpful in deciding when something should be done to effectively treat a hearing loss.

“Untreated hearing loss is associated with anxiety, depression, isolation, frustration, withdrawal and negatively affects overall quality of life. This is easy to understand when we realize that hearing is one of or fi ve senses and it connects us with the world around us and the people in our lives. Hearing aids can help us reconnect to these sounds of life and are proven to reduce these unwanted affects and improve overall well being and quality of life.”

ListenUP! Canada is the largest provider of hearing healthcare products and services in Ontario with more than 100 locations across the province, including Brockville, Carleton Place, Kemptville, Perth

and Smiths Falls. Clients receive free, no obligation hearing assessments, and the latest brand-name, digital hearing aids in all styles. Hearing aids come with their exclusive Don’t Worry, Be Happy Guarantee™ which includes three years of batteries and follow-up services, and 90 days to return or exchange – lowest price and satisfaction guaranteed.

Those who already wear hearing aids, no matter where they bought them, can join the join the ListenUP! Battery Club to receive a complimentary hearing aid check-up, cleaning, and 3 months of batteries for free – no purchase necessary.

Most ListenUP! Canada hearing aid centres are open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to schedule your free, no obligation appointment, please call 1-800-935-0592 or visit ListenUPcanada.com.

Falls account for more than ½ of all injuries in Canadians aged 65 and over. One third of these people will experience a fall once each year and half of those will fall more than once. As we age, the likelihood of falling increases as sense of balance and other senses decrease. 20% of deaths from injury can be traced back to falls.

Falls also account for 85% of injury related hospitalizations in seniors. 40% of these falls result in broken hips. Sadly one in fi ve adults will die within 12 months of breaking a hip. Half of these injuring falls occur at home, and often debilitate or weaken the person so they can no longer live in their own home.

The good news is…☺… there are ways to reduce falls. Following is a checklist of danger spots in your home and how to make them safer as well as aspects that will also help with daily activities. Use them to help you live longer, safer & easier.

Bathrooms- a slippery dangerous spot with high fall risk• Grab Bars around the room and on the tub for places to

securely hold onto• Transfer Bench or Electric Bath Lift to let you safely sit

down, slide across & swing your legs into the tub • Bath Chair in the tub for sitting while showering• Extra-Long Shower Hose for showering while sitting• Large Bath Mat in the tub or shower to reduce slips• Raised Toilet Seat and Toilet Arms for safe sitting/standing

Bed Rooms, Living Room & Kitchen• Bed Rail or Pole to assist in getting in and out of bed • Electric Height-Adjustable Hospital-Type Bed • Stocking Aids and other Dressing Aids eliminate bending • Electric Lift and Recline Chairs for easier sitting/standing • Step Stools with Handles for safer climbing• Reacher so high or low items are easier to get

Outside Entrance• Threshold Ramps to reduce trip risks• Modular Ramps & Portable Ramps for easier access

Walking/ Transporting• Canes and Crutches in many styles and types • Folding Lightweight Aluminum Walker • Government Funded Four Wheeled Rollator with Seat• Transport Wheelchair for occasional long distance use• 4-Wheeled Scooter (ask about government funding)• Government Funded Custom Long Term Wheelchair for all-day comfort & mobility

Oakland Cemetery is an historic garden cemetery, owned and operated by the City of Brockville since 1860, when all the older in-town cemeteries were closed. Fourteen acres of land on the western outskirts of the Town of Brockville were purchased from the Grant family.

This land, south of the main road, had been granted by the Crown, to Sgt. Allan Grant U.E.L. in 1798.

The newly acquired land was divided into three sections for the separate use of Anglicans, Roman Catholics and other Protestant denominations. Many early graves were moved there from the closed cemeteries.

In 1890 an additional forty-six acres were purchased on the north side of the highway and the name Oakland Cemetery was adopted.

For sixty-seven years, from 1872 to 1939, the cemeteries were maintained and operated by the DeCarle family, beginning with Lancelot DeCarle, who was succeeded by his son Leopold, then Leopold’s brother Charles, and from 1928 to 1939 by grandson Victor DeCarle. The family also owned a monument business nearby on Highway 2.

In 1891 a program of perpetual care was introduced.

Then in 1940, the family of Albert Gilmour, wholesale grocers in Brockville, donated funds to build the handsome Gilmour Memorial Chapel.

Previously unused space is now being offered for sale, on the historic south side of the road, where many of

Brockville’s early families are buried.

The beautiful landscaped setting is well-maintained by Superintendent Dale Trickey and his staff.

Oakland Cemetery offers traditional plots, cremation plots and columbarium niches.

The new Pet Cemetery, nearby on the Lyn Road, is now available for the burial of families’ beloved pets.

The Brockville Cemetery Board, which oversees the operations at the cemetery, is composed of Brockville residents appointed by City Council.

For further information or assistance call Mr. Trickey at 613-342-3858 during working hours or at 613-923-5957 after hours.

FEATURE | Pillowpacker Travel Pillows Premium infl atable travel pillows made in OttawaPillowpacker pillows are designed by travellers for travellers! If you are a traveller and you care more about your comfort now than you did while backpack-ing across Europe 30 years ago, then our pillows are designed for you!

What’s with the name “Pillowpacker”? Pillowpackers are that strange breed of traveller who wants the com-fort of their home bedroom pillow when they travel! And, maybe they even go so far as to actually pack their full-size bedroom pillows when they travel! Well that describes what we did for years and when this became no longer practical (or affordable) we set about inventing a travel pillow to accomplish this magi-cal act…and after a year of development and testing, voilà….the Pillowpacker Pillow!

Our pillows are infl atable and come in 3 models, Hutterite white goose down, Canadian duck down or hypoallergenic microfi bre. The goose down model is actually just introduced and doesn’t yet appear on our website but it is the “Rolex” of travel pillows. Although our pillows weigh less than a pound and are approximately half the size of a bedroom pillow, they perform like a full-size pillow.

The secret is the infl atable contoured inner pillow made of strong polyurethane fi lm, which can be infl ated or defl ated to suit the user’s sleeping preferences. The pil-low comes as a set with a home-style cotton pillowcase in a variety of colours and a water resistant stuff sack for stowing the pillow when not in use. Everything is washable.

Pillowpackers is a very small compa-ny but we are very focused on what we do, how we do it, our impact on others, both human and animal, and our environment. Something that bothers us greatly is the fact that in Canada we have abandoned our manufacturing sector. This is a sad reality and we don’t subscribe to this practice; our pillows are made in Ottawa.

What we have done at Pillowpackers is make a “management decision” that we will differentiate ourselves in the highly price-sensitive travel pillow market NOT by focusing on fi nding cheap suppliers and materials but by focusing on fi nding quality

suppliers who do a number of important things.

First, they not only have to supply high quality materi-als but they have to be good employers and treat their workers fairly and provide good working conditions. We want to know where their materials come from and that they can testify as to their origin. Our organic cotton, from seed to fi nished product, comes from the USA.

Next, we insist that in the case of our goose and duck down that the product is humanely harvested and the animals are in no way mistreated in rendering their down. We insist that our down be of a quality that we can “certify” as to its cleanliness and be processed in a manner that has a low impact on our environment. In our case our Canadian supplier uses water and steam only, no chemicals.

So, in summary, we have made choices in making our products and these choices focus on doing the right thing in our opinion. We want to make high quality products with fairness to the hard working folks who make our materials, ethical treatment toward any ani-mals and care about our environment.

If you want to own the last travel pillow you will ever buy, visit our lineup at www.pillowpackers.com and check out the dozens of testimonials from discerning travellers. You are invited to drop into our “world headquarters” in Britannia Village and see them for yourselves.

Rest assured wherever you roam, with a Pillowpacker Pillow, it’s like sleeping at home!

Is it time to consider moving to a seniors’ residence? If small size and a personal touch are important to you or your senior family member, Riverview Seniors’ Residence in Carleton Place is worth investigating. It is located overlooking the lovely Mississippi River, Riverside Park and the high school and ball diamond, just a 10-to-15-minute walk from downtown.

Even with its beautiful location and large, landscaped lot, Riverview is an affordable option for assisted living for seniors.

Assisted living means just that: help when and where seniors need it. Monthly fees include not just rental of your own unit, but all the services you may require. Specialized nursing care is also available for an hourly fee, so “aging-in-place” can happen as long as you and your family want.

All the rooms at Riverview are private, either basic studios with their own four-piece bathroom, or there are also fi ve one-bedroom suites for those who desire a little extra space. Rooms are bright and clean. Each features an emergency call-bell system, monitored by on-site staff 24 hours per day, so you will feel safe and secure, snug in your new surroundings.

Meals are home-cooked and delicious, served in the large, comfortable dining room overlooking the back yard and gardens. One of the best things in life is eating, and the staff and owners all appreciate that. The cook plans her menus according to foods in season, with taste, appearance and healthy nutrition in mind. She selects foods based on Canada’s Food Guide, for variety and appeal. Why not come for a tour and lunch on us, and see what we offer?

Cleanliness and safety are also so important to healthy living. Rooms are tidied daily, with a full deep-cleaning weekly, as well as personal linen changing and laundry once per week. Assistance with a bath once per week is also

available if needed. Oral medication administration and supervision is provided. All this is included in the monthly rates. Fire and food safety inspections occur regularly, with strict government guidelines enforced.

A very signifi cant feature of life in a retirement residence is activities. At Riverview, we offer planned games, outings and events, as well as many opportunities for informal friendship and chats over a hot cup of coffee or tea. Our monthly activity calendar lists times and events, with something for everyone: bingo, euchre, trivia, gardening and games, to name only a few.

You will be encouraged and supported in staying active in your senior years at Riverview, keeping mind, body and spirit moving. One of the owners is a registered nurse, whose passion is promoting health. The staff also shares the mission of preserving the health and happiness of our residents.

Why not come out and explore life at Riverview? Have a tour, meet some of the current residents, and try a meal on us. Our doors are always open, and we look forward to meeting you!

When a meaningful home improvement project goes beyond the expertise of the average homeowner, Tim Winges of Winges Carpentry Service is prepared to step in and help you realize your goals.

With more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of the profession, Tim will treat your project as though it was his own home.

Now a Period Restoration Specialist, the carpenter has learned his craft over the years, ever since taking on his fi rst real job at age 17, working for D. Kemp Edwards Lumber Company in Ottawa as the Lathe Operator. His work involved turning balusters, newel posts, table & chair legs, etc. on a turn-of-the-century lathe that could handle material up to 14 ft long.

Winges Carpentry Service has been a registered business for 16 years now and is registered with The Better Business Bureau of Eastern Ontario.

While Tim specializes in bringing heritage pieces back to life, he also does all aspects of carpentry including small additions, plaster repair, drywall, painting, ceramics, fl ooring, special and plain decks, bar tops and more. He also reproduces certain pieces of special woodworking.

“I always try to get as much detail out of my clients as possible,” he says. “So then I am able to show them how I will achieve the results that they want. I always love a good challenge.”

With three decades working in the profession, Tim has worked throughout Ottawa and the Valley.

Just a few of his career highlights include:

• the restoration of nine large oak doors at McKay United Church in Ottawa in 2000,

• the restoration of the main Victorian fence around the Pakistan High Commisioner’s Residence in Rockcliffe Park in 1998,

• various jobs in the Glebe and New

Edinburgh neighbourhoods in Ottawa such as vinyl tile fl oors, window replacements, kitchen storage cabinets, basement insulation and water proofi ng, painting and trimwork, ceramic work, porch and deck work.

He has also completed many bathroom restorations in the nation’s capital, as well as a large porch restoration on Main Street in Winchester.

For more information contact the Brockville Denture Clinic.
