11. THE CONTRACTOR MUST MAINTAIN A SET OF CONSTRUCTION PLANS WHICH HAVE BEEN MARKED UP TOACCURATELY CONVEY CONSTRUCTION WHICH HAS DEVIATED FROM THE APPROVED CONSTRUCTION PLANS. THESEPLANS MUST BE PROVIDED TO THE CLIENT, THE CLIENT'S REPRESENTATIVE, OR NATURAL RESOURCES DESIGN PRIORTO THE PROJECT CLOSEOUT.

GENERAL GRADING NOTES1. THE SITE MUST BE GRADED AND PAVED SO THAT NO NEW LOW POINTS WITHOUT

PROPER DRAINAGE ARE CREATED; NO PONDING SHALL OCCUR ONSITE UNLESSSPECIFICALLY NOTED OTHERWISE ON THE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PLANS WITHINBMP FACILITIES OR ON THE SEDIMENT CONTROL PLAN WITHIN SEDIMENT TRAPS ORBASINS.

2. ALL PAVED SURFACES SHALL BE AT A 1.0% MINIMUM SLOPE. ALL GRASSED ANDLANDSCAPED AREAS SHALL BE AT A 2.0% MINIMUM SLOPE. EXCEPTIONS MAY BE MADEONLY IF APPROVED BY NATURAL RESOURCES DESIGN.

3. SPOT ELEVATIONS SHOWN AT TIE-IN POINTS WITH EXISTING SURFACES AREAPPROXIMATE AND SHALL BE FIELD VERIFIED BY THE CONTRACTOR. PROPOSEDELEVATIONS MAY BE MODIFIED WITH APPROVAL FROM NATURAL RESOURCES DESIGN TOMATCH EXISTING GRADE.

4. ANY UNSUITABLE IN SITU SOIL OR MATERIAL MUST BE REMOVED OR REMEDIATED PERDIRECTION FROM THE ENGINEER.

GENERAL UTILITY NOTES1. THE CONSTRUCTION WORK SHALL BE COMPLETED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO MINIMIZE

UTILITY OUTAGES. ALL UTILITY OUTAGES MUST BE COORDINATED WITH THEUTILITY OWNER AND AFFECTED PARTIES.

2. SOME EXISTING UTILITIES MAY NOT BE SHOWN ON THE PLANS. BEFORE BEGINNINGCONSTRUCTION, VERIFY THERE ARE NO CONFLICTS WITH EXISTING UTILITIES. TESTPIT AS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE LOCATIONS AND DEPTHS OF EXISTING UTILITIESWITHIN THE CONSTRUCTION WORK AREA. IF ANY EXISTING UTILITIES ARE FOUNDWHICH ARE NOT DEPICTED IN THE EXISTING CONDITIONS PLAN OR CONFLICT WITHTHE PROPOSED WORK NOTIFY NATURAL RESOURCES DESIGN.

3. NOTIFY NATURAL RESOURCES DESIGN IF COVER FOR ANY UTILITY IS REDUCEDBELOW THE MINIMUM REQUIRED.

4. THE SITE CIVIL PLAN IS MEANT TO CONVEY 'WET' (SANITARY SEWER, STORMSEWER, AND WATER) UTILITY WORK. ALL 'DRY' (ELECTRIC, NATURAL GAS,TELECOMMUNICATIONS) UTILITY WORK SHOWN IS FOR INFORMATION ANDREFERENCE ONLY.

5. REFER TO DC WATER STANDARDS FOR ABANDONMENT OF EXISTING SANITARYSEWER, STORM SEWER, AND WATER LATERALS AND MAINS. THIS INVOLVESDISCONNECTING ALL LATERALS AT THE MAINS, PLUGGING AND SEALING THEMAINS, AND REMOVING ALL ABANDONED METERS, VALVES AND APPURTENANCES.COORDINATE WORK WITH DC WATER INSPECTOR.

6. ALL WYE CONNECTIONS TO EXISTING SEWER LATERAL LINES SHALL MATCH THEEXISTING SIZE AND MATERIAL.

7. ALL WATER SERVICE LATER TEES SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH A VALVE AS CLOSE ASPOSSIBLE TO THE MAINS. IF NECESSARY DUE TO FIELD CONDITIONS OR CONFLICTSWITH OTHER UTILITIES, AND IN COORDINATION WITH DC WATER INSPECTOR, A DIPSWIVEL TEE (AWWA C111) MAY BE USED.

8. REFER TO DC WATER STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR WATER PIPEMATERIAL. ALL WATER LINES 2-INCHES DIAMETER AND SMALLER SHALL BE TYPE KCOPPER. ALL WATERLINES AND FITTINGS 3-INCHES DIAMETER AND LARGER SHALLBE RESTRAINED JOINT DUCTILE IRON.

9. BACKFLOW PREVENTION VALVES FOR ALL DOMESTIC WATER SERVICE AND FIRESUPPRESSION LATERALS SHALL BE PROVIDED INSIDE THE BUILDINGS UNLESSSPECIFICALLY NOTED OTHERWISE.

10. REMOVE ABANDONED UTILITIES AS REQUIRED.

11. ADJUST EXISTING STRUCTURE TOPS AND MANHOLES TO REMAIN WITHIN THELIMITS OF DISTURBANCE TO MATCH FINAL GRADE AS REQUIRED. INSTALLADDITIONAL STEPS WITHIN MANHOLES AS REQUIRED.

12. PER DC WATER REQUIREMENTS, UTILITY AS-BUILT PLANS MUST BE SUBMITTED.

GENERAL PAVEMENT NOTES1. EXISTING PAVEMENT TO BE REPLACED SHALL AT MINIMUM MATCH THE EXISTING

CROSS SECTION.

2. EXISTING CURB AND/OR GUTTER TO BE REPLACED SHALL MATCH EXISTING TYPE,MATERIAL, AND DIMENSIONS.

3. SAWCUT EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENT 1' FROM EDGE OF NEW CURB AND/ORGUTTER FOR REPLACEMENT.

4. MILL AND OVERLAY EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENT 1' FROM EDGE OF NEWPAVEMENT TO PROVIDE SMOOTH TRANSITION.

5. MILL AND OVERLAY EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENT 10' FROM EITHER SIDE OFUTILITY TRENCHES IN PUBLIC SPACE, EXTENDED TO THE FULL WIDTH OF ANYAFFECTED TRAVEL LANES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE AN ADDITIVE BIDPRICE FOR MILL AND OVERLAY WORK OF THE ENTIRE ROAD WIDTH AS THIS MAY BEREQUIRED BY THE DDOT INSPECTOR.

GENERAL PUBLIC SPACE NOTES1. THE DDOT INSPECTOR IS AUTHORIZED TO MODIFY CONSTRUCTION IN PUBLIC SPACE,

INCLUDING TRAFFIC CONTROL PLANS. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ACCOMMODATE THEDDOT INSPECTOR'S REQUESTS IN REGARDS TO CONSTRUCTION IN PUBLIC SPACE.

2. ALL WORK IN PUBLIC SPACE IS SUBJECT TO A DDOT PUBLIC SPACE PERMIT AND A DDOTAPPROVED TRAFFIC CONTROL PLAN.

3. ALL EXISTING PARKING METERS, ROAD SIGNS, AND TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES ARE TOREMAIN MUST BE VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES OR BE RELOCATED OR REPLACED IF AFFECTEDBY THE CONSTRUCTION. COORDINATE WITH THE DDOT INSPECTOR.

GENERAL DEMOLITION NOTES1. THE CONTRACTOR MUST OBTAIN A RAZE PERMIT TO DEMOLISH ANY STRUCTURE.

2. REFER TO THE ARCHITECTURAL PLANS FOR SELECTIVE DEMOLITION RELATED TOINTERIOR RENOVATIONS. COORDINATE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM, INCLUDING THESTRUCTURAL ENGINEER, IN REGARD TO THE STABILITY OF EXISTING STRUCTURES TOREMAIN.

3. DC WATER UTILITIES MUST BE DISCONNECTED AND ABANDONED PER DC WATERSTANDARDS AND ARE SUBJECT TO DC WATER PERMITS. REFER TO UTILITY OWNERS'REQUIREMENTS AND STANDARDS TO DEMOLISH OR ABANDON UTILITIES.

4. THE APPROXIMATE SCALE OF ABANDONMENT AND DEMOLITION OF SITE FEATURESAND UTILITIES ARE DEPICTED BOLD OR HATCHED ON THE DEMOLITION PLAN.

5. DEMOLITION OF SITE FEATURES AND UTILITIES TO REPLACE ITEMS IN KIND ARE NOTNECESSARILY SHOWN BUT ARE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF WORK.

1. PERSONS REGULARLY PERFORMING PUBLIC SPACE EXCAVATION AND MANHOLEWORK ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE, ON A BIWEEKLY BASIS, PLANS SHOWING THEIRANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES IN THE PUBLIC SPACE WITHIN THAT TWO-WEEK PERIOD.

2. NO WORK SHALL BE UNDERTAKEN IF THE APPLICANT, OR THE PERSON ON WHOSEBEHALF THE APPLICATION IS MADE, HAS OUTSTANDING RESTORATION IN THE PUBLICSPACE. THIS RESTRICTION WILL ALSO APPLY TO APPLICANTS WITH TEMPORARYREPAIRS THAT HAVE FAILED AND THE APPLICANT DID NOT UNDERTAKE RESTORATIONWITHIN 24 HOURS OF NOTIFICATION BY THE OFFICE OF INFRASTRUCTUREOVERSIGHT (OIO).

3. PERMANENT RESTORATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE WINTERSUSPENSION PERIOD, WHICH IS FROM NOVEMBER 1 THROUGH MARCH 31.

DC LAW 3129, UNDERGROUND FACILITIES PROTECTION ACT OF 1980, REQUIRESCONTACTING THE 'MISS UTILITY' AT (800) 257-7777 AT LEAST 48 HOURS AND NOTMORE THAN 10 DAYS (EXCLUDING SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS AND LEGAL HOLIDAYS)PRIOR TO THE START OF EXCAVATION. THIS IS REQUIRED SO NOTIFICATIONS CAN BEMADE TO PARTICIPATING PRIVATE UTILITY COMPANIES OF THE PROPOSED WORK.

5. IMPROPER HOUSEKEEPING VIOLATIONS ON JOB SITES RELATING TO DIRT AND DEBRISIN THE PUBLIC SPACE SHALL BE GROUNDS FOR A FINE OF $500.00 PER BLOCK PERDAY AND/OR REVOCATION OF THIS PERMIT.

6. AUTHORIZED WORK SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTSFOR EXCAVATION AS OUTLINED IN THE DC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATIONSTANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGHWAYS AND STRUCTURES.

7. WORK AUTHORIZED BY THIS PERMIT SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITHREQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN FHWA 'MANUAL OF UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROLDEVICES' AND TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES MUST BE ARRANGED ACCORDING TO THEAPPROVED TRAFFIC CONTROL PLANS FOR THIS PROJECT.

8. ACCESS TO ALLEYS, DRIVEWAYS, AND ROADWAYS MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALLTIMES. THE TRAFFIC SERVICES ADMINISTRATION AND FIRE MARSHALL MUSTAPPROVE ANY CLOSURES OF THE RIGHTS-OF-WAY AND THE PERMIT MUST REFLECTTHIS APPROVAL.

9. WHERE APPLICABLE, ALL INTERSECTIONS MUST BE PLATED.

10. SIX (6) FEET OF SIDEWALK ACCESS MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES. THE TRAFFICSERVICES ADMINISTRATION MUST APPROVE ANY CLOSURES OF THE RIGHTS-OF-WAYAND THE PERMIT MUST REFLECT THIS APPROVAL.

11. THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING AND SALVAGING ALLCOBBLESTONE PAVERS AND OTHER SPECIAL PAVERS REMOVED IN CONNECTIONWITH EXCAVATION. THE CONTRACTOR MUST SECURE AND STORE MATERIALS ATCONTRACTOR'S EXPENSE AND REINSTALL ALL MATERIALS DEEMED SPECIAL ORHISTORIC AS DIRECTED BY DISTRICT ENGINEERS OR OIO.

12. ALL STREETLIGHT AND TRAFFIC SIGNAL CABLES MUST BE SAFEGUARDED AT ALLTIMES.

13. STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT AND/OR SUPPLIES IS PROHIBITED IN PUBLIC SPACEWITHOUT A PERMIT EXPRESSLY AUTHORIZING IT.

CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE:1. CONTACT THE DOEE INSPECTOR AND HAVE A PRE-CONSTRUCTION MEETING ONSITE.2. INSTALL PHASE I EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL FEATURES AS INDICATED.3. STOCKPILE TOPSOIL ONSITE AT LOCATION INDICATED. IMMEDIATELY SEED & MULCH STOCKPILE OR TARP STOCKPILE.4. EXCAVATE AND CONSTRUCT DRY SWALES AND GRADE SITE, INSTALLING PHASE II EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL

FEATURES AS REQUIRED TO PROTECT BMPS FROM SOIL CONTAMINATION AND COMPACTION (TEMPORARY DIVERSIONBERMS MAY BE USED TO DIVERT UNCONTAMINATED RUNOFF AWAY FROM CONSTRUCTION AREAS).

SOIL CONDITIONS:

1. SOIL MAPPING INFORMATION FOR THE PROJECT SITE INDICATES TWO UNDERLYING SOILS, AS SHOWN ON THE PLAN ANDDESCRIBED BELOW.· UDORTHENTS, GRAVELLY, SMOOTHED (U7) ARE WELL DRAINED, HSG "A" SOILS. TYPICAL PROFILE IS 0 TO 5 INCHES

GRAVELLY LOAM; 5 TO 65 INCHES GRAVELLY SANDY LOAM. DEPTH TO GROUNDWATER IS TYPICALLY GREATER THAN80 INCHES.

· CHILLUM-URBAN LAND COMPLEX (CdB & CdD) ARE WELL DRAINED, HSG "C" SOILS, WITH APPROXIMATELY 40%URBAN LAND, 40% CHILLUM, AND 20% MINOR COMPONENTS. TYPICAL PROFILE FOR CHILLUM IS 0 TO 2 INCHES SILTLOAM; 2 TO 12 INCHES GRAVELLY LOAM; 12 TO 24 INCHES CLAY LOAM; 24 TO 34 INCHES LOAMY SAND; 34 TO 72INCHES GRAVELLY SILTY CLAY LOAM. DEPTH TO GROUNDWATER IS GREATER THAN 80 INCHES.

2. INFILTRATION TESTS WERE PERFORMED AT THE LOCATIONS INDICATED. INFILTRATION RATE FOR TP-1 IS 0.70INCHES/HOUR. INFILTRATION RATE FOR TP-2 IS NIL. AN UNDERDRAIN SYSTEM IS TO BE INCORPORATED INTO THE DRYSWALE DESIGN.

3. ESTIMATED CUT IS 350 CY. ESTIMATED FILL IS 50 CY.

EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL NOTES

1. THE DOEE INSPECTOR IS AUTHORIZED TO MODIFY THE LOCATION, SCALE, AND QUANTITY OF SEDIMENT CONTROLMEASURES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ACCOMMODATE THE DOEE INSPECTOR'S REQUESTS IN REGARDS TO EROSIONAND SEDIMENT CONTROL.

2. THE CONTRACTOR IS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE MINOR ADJUSTMENTS IN REGARDS TO THE LIMITS OF DISTURBANCEAND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES TO PERFORM THE WORK AND ACCOMMODATE FIELD CONDITIONS. THECONTRACTOR MUST COORDINATE WITH THE DOEE INSPECTOR.

3. A TEMPORARY STONE CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCE MUST BE PROVIDED AT ALL POINTS OF CONSTRUCTION VEHICLEEGRESS. THE WIDTH AND LENGTH OF ALL CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCES MUST BE MAINTAINED BY ADDING STONEFROM A STOCKPILE TO BE MAINTAINED ON SITE. PROJECTS WHICH REQUIRE RELATIVELY SMALL AMOUNTS OFDISTURBANCE MAY NOT REQUIRE A TEMPORARY STONE CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCE IF PERMISSION IS GRANTEDFROM THE DOEE INSPECTOR. CLEAN ALL TRUCKS AND EQUIPMENT OF MUD, DIRT, AND DUST TO AVOID TRACKINGSILT INTO PUBLIC SPACE.

4. THE DOEE INSPECTOR OR ENGINEER MAY DETERMINE SAFETY FENCE IS REQUIRED NEAR THE PERIMETER OF THESITE OR SURROUNDING AREAS WHERE THE PUBLIC TRAVERSES THROUGH THE SITE DURING CONSTRUCTION ORPOTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS AREAS. SAFETY FENCE MUST BE AT LEAST 42" HIGH, HAVE OPENINGS NO MORE THAN 2",AND HAVE SUPPORTING POSTS NO MORE THAN 8' APART. ANY REQUIRED SAFETY FENCE MUST BE KEPT IN GOODWORKING CONDITION.

5. THE LIMITS OF DISTURBANCE AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES ARE SHOWN APPROXIMATELY; PRESENTATIONON THE PLANS MAY DEVIATE SLIGHTLY FROM THE ACTUAL DESIGN INTENT FOR GRAPHICAL CLARITY.

6. TEMPORARY SOIL STOCKPILES SHOULD BE PLACED AS NEEDED ON THE SITE IN COORDINATION WITH THE DOEEINSPECTOR. INSTALL SILT FENCE AROUND THE PERIMETER OF ALL STOCKPILES AND COVER WITH A TARP OR OTHERAPPROVED IMPERMEABLE SURFACE PRIOR TO RAIN EVENTS.

7. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE INLET PROTECTION FOR ALL CATCH BASINS, CURB INLETS, DRAINS, AND RISERSTRUCTURES ON OR ADJACENT TO THE LIMITS OF DISTURBANCE. ANY SEWER WHICH BECOMES CLOGGED DUE TOCONSTRUCTION MUST BE PROMPTLY CLEANED AND CLEARED.

8. ANY AND ALL SITE STORM RUNOFF FROM DISTURBED AREAS MUST BE FILTERED OR OTHERWISE TREATED TOREMOVE SEDIMENT PRIOR TO LEAVING THE SITE. SEDIMENT MUST BE PLACED IN AN APPROVED AREA ANDSTABILIZED. SEDIMENT MUST NOT BE PLACED IN A FLOODPLAIN, WETLAND, OR WITHIN THE CRITICAL ROOT ZONEOF AN EXISTING TREE TO REMAIN.

9. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE TREE PROTECTION FOR ALL TREES TO REMAIN ON OR ADJACENT TO THE LIMITSOF DISTURBANCE. DO NOT TRAVERSE MACHINERY ON, COMPACT, OR DISTURB ANY AREA WITHIN THE CRITICALROOT ZONE OF AN EXISTING TREE TO REMAIN.

10. MINIMIZE DUST GENERATION DURING CONSTRUCTION PER DOEE STANDARDS.11. REMOVE OFF- SITE ACCUMULATIONS OF SEDIMENT DAILY DURING CONSTRUCTION AND IMMEDIATELY AT THE

REQUEST OF A DOEE INSPECTOR.12. EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL DETAILS ARE INCLUDED ON THE PLANS FOR REFERENCE ONLY AND ARE NOT

INTENDED TO REPRESENT A TOTAL INCLUSION OF ALL EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL DETAILS AND STANDARDSTHAT MAY BE REQUIRED FOR THE PROJECT. CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MOST RECENTVERSION OF ALL DOEE DETAILS AND STANDARDS.

13. REFER TO THE DOEE 2017 EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MANUAL FOR DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, ANDMAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS FOR EACH ESC MEASURE.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE RECOMMENDED COMPOSITION OF THE THREE MEDIA INGREDIENTS:

SAND (FINE AGGREGATE). SAND SHALL CONSIST OF SILICA-BASED MEDIUM TO COARSE SAND, ANGULAR OR ROUND IN SHAPE. THE MATERIAL SHALL NOT BEDERIVED FROM SERPENTINE AND SHALL BE FREE OF LOAM OR CLAY, DIABASE, SURFACE COATINGS, OR ANY OTHER DELETERIOUS MATERIALS AND SHALLCONTAIN LESS THAN 0.5% MICA BY WEIGHT WHEN TESTED WITH ASTM C295, PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION OF AGGREGATES FOR CONCRETE.

ASTM C-33 CONCRETE SAND WILL TYPICALLY MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAND TO BE USED IN FILTER MEDIA. HOWEVER, SOME SAMPLES OF ASTM C-33SAND MAY HAVE TOO HIGH A FRACTION OF FINE SAND AND SILT AND CLAY-SIZED PARTICLES TO ALLOW THE FINAL FILTER MEDIA PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONREQUIREMENTS TO BE MET. IN GENERAL, COARSER GRADATIONS OF ASTM C-33 WILL BETTER MEET THE FILTER MEDIA PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANDHYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY REQUIREMENTS.

ANY OTHER MATERIALS, SUCH AS LIMESTONE-BASED SANDS OR CRUSHED GLASS, SHALL MEET THE REQUIRED PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND BEDEMONSTRATED AS ADEQUATELY DURABLE WHEN TESTED BY AASHTO T-103 OR T-104.

BASE LOAM SOIL. BASE LOAM SOIL IS GENERALLY DEFINED AS THE COMBINATION 0F SAND-SIZED MATERIAL, FINES (SILT AND CLAY), AND ANY ASSOCIATED SOILORGANIC MATTER. SINCE THE OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIFICATION IS TO CAREFULLY ESTABLISH THE PROPER BLEND OF THESE INGREDIENTS, THE DESIGNER (ORCONTRACTOR OR MATERIALS SUPPLIER) MUST CAREFULLY SELECT THE TOPSOIL SOURCE MATERIAL IN ORDER TO NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT OF ANY ONEINGREDIENT.

GENERALLY, A NATURAL LOAMY SAND, SANDY LOAM, OR LOAM (PER THE USDA TEXTURAL TRIANGLE). A-HORIZON TOPSOIL FREE OF SUBSOIL, LARGE STONES,EARTH CLODS, STICKS, STUMPS, CLAY LUMPS, ROOTS, VIABLE NOXIOUS WEED SEED, PLANT PROPAGULES, BRUSH, OR OTHER OBJECTION ABLE, EXTRANEOUSMATTER OR DEBRIS IS SUITABLE FOR THE BASE LOAM (SOIL FINES) SOURCE MATERIAL.

ORGANIC AMENDMENTS. ORGANIC AMENDMENTS SHALL CONSIST OF STABLE, WELL-DECOMPOSED, NATURAL, CARBON-CONTAINING ORGANIC MATERIALS SUCHAS PEAT MOSS, HUMUS, OR YARD WASTE (CONSISTENT WITH THE MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS FOUND IN APPENDIX J). THE MATERIAL SHALL BE FREE OF DEBRISSUCH AS PLASTICS, METAL, CONCRETE, STONES LARGER THAN 1/2 INCH, LARGER BRANCHES AND ROOTS, AND WOOD CHIPS OVER 1 INCH IN LENGTH OR DIAMETER.

COMPLETE FILTER MEDIA. THE COMPLETE FILTER MEDIA SOIL MI X SHALL CONSIST OF A PUG MILLED OR MECHANICALLY BLENDED MIX OF THE THREE SOURCEMATERIALS RESULTING IN A FILTER MEDIA THAT MEETS THE FOLLOWING PARTICLE SIZE COMPOSITION, AS WELL AS THE GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION INDICATED INTABLE 3.19:· 80% - 90% SAND (AT LEAST 75% OF WHICH MUST BE CLASSIFIED AS COARSE OR VERY COARSE SAND)· 10% - 20% SOIL FINES (SILT AND CLAY)· MAXIMUM 10% CLAY

NOTE: THE ABOVE PERCENTAGES ARE BASED ON WEIGHT RATHER THAN VOLUME. THE PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS MUST BE CONDUCTED ON THE MINERAL FRACTIONONLY OR FOLLOWING APPROPRIATE TREATMENTS TO REMOVE ORGANIC MATTER BEFORE PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS. THE DDOT GREEN INFRASTRUCTURESTANDARDS INCLUDE A BIORETENTION SOIL SPECIFICATION BASE ON VOLUME, NOT WEIGHT, SO THE PERCENTAGES LISTED THERE DO NOT MATCH THOSE LISTEDHERE, EVEN THOUGH THE TWO SPECIFICATIONS ARE SUBSTANTIALLY EQUIVALENT.

IN CASES WHERE GREATER REMOVAL OF SPECIFIC POLLUTANTS IS DESIRED, ADDITIVES WITH DOCUMENTED POLLUTANT REMOVAL BENEFITS, SUCH AS WATERTREATMENT RESIDUALS, ALUM , IRON , OR OTHER MATERIALS, MAY BE INCLUDED IN THE FILTER MEDIA IF ACCEPTED BY DOEE.

SIGNAGE. BIORETENTION UNITS IN HIGHLY URBANIZED AREAS SHOULD BE STENCILED OR OTHERWISE PERMANENTLY MARKED TO DESIGNATE IT AS A STRUCTURALBMP. THE STENCIL OR PLAQUE SHOULD INDICATE (1) ITS WATER QUALITY PURPOSE, (2) THAT IT MAY POND BRIEFLY AFTER A STORM, AND (3) THAT IT IS NOT TO BEDISTURBED EXCEPT FOR REQUIRED MAINTENANCE.

DOEE CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS3.9.6 OPEN CHANNEL CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

OPEN CHANNEL (DRY SWALE) INSTALLATION. THE FOLLOWING IS A TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE TOPROPERLY INSTALL DRY SWALE OPEN CHANNELS. THESE STEPS MAY BE MODIFIED TO REFLECT DIFFERENT SITECONDITIONS OR DESIGN VARIATIONS:

STEP 1: PROTECTION DURING CONSTRUCTION. IDEALLY, OPEN CHANNELS SHOULD REMAIN OUTSIDE THE LIMITSOF DISTURBANCE DURING CONSTRUCTION TO PREVENT SOIL COMPACTION BY HEAVY EQUIPMENT. HOWEVER,THIS IS SELDOM PRACTICAL, GIVEN THAT THE CHANNELS ARE A KEY PART OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM AT MOSTSITES. IN THESE CASES, TEMPORARY SOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES SHOULD GE INTEGRATEDINTO THE SWALE DESIGN THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE. SPECIFICALLY, BARRIERS SHOULD BEINSTALLED AT KEY CHECK DAM LOCATIONS, AND EROSION CONTROL FABRIC SHOULD BE USED TO PROTECT THECHANNEL. DRY SWALES THAT LACK UNDERDRAINS (AND RELY ON INFILTRATION) MUST BE FULLY PROTECTED BYSILT FENCE OR CONSTRUCTION FENCING TO PREVENT COMPACTION BY HEAVY EQUIPMENT DURINGCONSTRUCTION.STEP 2: INSTALLATION. INSTALLATION MAY ONLY BEGIN AFTER THE ENTIRE CDA HAS BEEN STABILIZED WITHVEGETATION. ANY ACCUMULATION OF SEDIMENTS THAT DOES OCCUR WITHIN THE CHANNEL MUST BE REMOVEDDURING THE FINAL STAGES OF GRADING TO ACHIEVE THE DESIGN CROSS SECTION. SOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENTCONTROLS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHANNEL MUST BE INSTALLED AS SPECIFIED IN THE SOIL EROSION ANDSEDIMENT CONTROL PLAN. STORMWATER FLOWS MUST NOT BE PERMITTED INTO THE CHANNEL UNTIL THEBOTTOM AND SIDE SLOPES ARE FULLY STABILIZED.STEP 3: GRADING. GRADE THE CHANNELS TO FINAL DIMENSIONS SHOWN ON THE PLAN. EXCAVATORS ORBACKHOES SHOULD WORK FROM THE SIDES TO GRADE AND EXCAVATE THE OPEN CHANNELS TO THEAPPROPRIATE DESIGN DIMENSIONS. BOTTOM (SUBGRADE) SHOULD BE RIPPED, ROTOTILLED OR OTHERWISESCARIFIED TO PROMOTE BETTER INFILTRATION.STEP 4: PLACING STONE LAYER AND MEDIA. PLACE AN ACCEPTABLE GEOTEXTILE FABRIC ON THE UNDERGROUND(EXCAVATED) SIDES OF THE DRY SWALE WITH A MINIMUM 6-INCH OVERLAP. PLACE THE STONE NEEDED FORSTORAGE LAYER OVER THE FILTER BED. ADD THE PERFORATED UNDERDRAIN PIPE. ADD THE REMAINING STONEJACKET, AND THEN PACK NO 57 STONE (CLEAN DOUBLE-WASHED) TO 3-INCHES ABOVE THE TOP OF THEUNDERDRAIN, AND THEN ADD 3-INCHES OF PEA GRAVEL AS A FILTER LAYER. ADD THE FILTER MEDIA IN 12-INCHLIFTS UNTIL THE DESIRED TOP ELEVATIONS OF THE DRY SWALE ARE ACHIEVED. WATER THOROUGHLY AND ADDADDITIONAL MEDIA AS NEEDED WHERE SETTLEMENT HAS OCCURRED.STEP 5: INSTALL CHECK DAMS (WHERE REQUIRED). INSTALL CHECK DAMS, CULVERTS AND INTERNALPRETREATMENT FEATURES AS SHOWN ON THE PLAN. FILL MATERIAL USED TO CONSTRUCT CHECK DAMS SHOULDBE PLACED IN 8- TO 12-INCH LIFTS AND COMPACTED TO PREVENT SETTLEMENT. THE TOP OF EACH CHECK DAMMUST BE CONSTRUCTED LEVEL AT THE DESIGN ELEVATION.STEP 6: HYDRO-SEED. HYDRO-SEED THE BOTTOM AND BANKS OF THE OPEN CHANNELS, AND PEG IN EROSIONCONTROL FABRIC OR BLANKET WHERE NEEDED. AFTER INITIAL PLANTING, A BIODEGRADABLE EROSION CONTROLFABRIC SHOULD BE USED, CONFORMING TO THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROLSTANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS.STEP 7: PLANT. PLANT LANDSCAPING MATERIAL AS SHOWN IN THE LANDSCAPING PLANS, AND WATER THEMWEEKLY DURING THE FIRST 2 MONTHS. THE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT SHOULD INCLUDE A CARE ANDREPLACEMENT WARRANTY TO ENSURE THAT VEGETATION IS PROPERLY ESTABLISHED AND SURVIVES DURING THEFIRST GROWING SEASON FOLLOWING CONSTRUCTION.STEP 8: FINAL INSPECTION. CONDUCT THE FINAL CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION USING A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALAND DEVELOP A PUNCH LIST FOR FACILITY ACCEPTANCE.CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION. SUPERVISION DURING CONSTRUCTION IS RECOMMENDED TO ENSURE THAT THEOPEN CHANNELS ARE BUILT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPROVED DESIGN AND THIS SPECIFICATION. 3.9.7 OPEN CHANNEL MAINTENANCE CRITERIA

MAINTENANCE IS A CRUCIAL AND REQUIRED ELEMENT THAT ENSURES THE LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE OFOPEN CHANNELS. DRY SWALE DESIGNS MAY REQUIRE REGULAR PRUNING AND MANAGEMENT OF TREES ANDSHRUBS. THE SURFACE OF DRY SWALE FILTER BEDS CAN BECOME CLOGGED WITH FINE SEDIMENT OVER TIME,BUT THIS CAN BE ALLEVIATED THROUGH CORE AERATION OR DEEP TILLING FOR THE FILTER BED. ADDITIONALEFFORT MAY BE NEEDED TO REPAIR CHECK DAMS, STABILIZE INLET POINTS, AND REMOVE DEPOSITEDSEDIMENT FROM PRETREATMENT CELLS. TABLE 3.38 PROVIDES A SCHEDULE OF TYPICAL MAINTENANCEREQUIREMENTS FOR OPEN CHANNELS.
