Publisher’s CornerThe greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole youAfter having spent too much time in an indoor meeting, I went to the Petrified SeaGardens to eat lunch outside. I was disappointed to find that it is now closed to thepublic. This seemed familiar upon arrival, regardless it was disheartening to see itlocked up without indication of its extraordinary existence. Rather than a forestwith a 490 million-year-old rock surface of fossilized sea bottom, the site lookedlike a neglected caged animal. Although the gate was locked, I found an openingnot far from the entrance, walked in and sat on the ground to eat. The sun was shin-ing, the air was hot, and I was happy to be nourishing myself amongst the tall grass.

After eating, I walked towards the stromatolites. Before stepping onto the path, Iglanced down to find an all black feather. Adoring feathers, I happily accepted thegift before walking further in. Within two steps, I became overwhelmed withemotion—to the point of tears. Standing still in silence, I stayed with the emotionseeking a message, but it wasn’t long before it dissipated and I felt only my ownself again. So, I continued my walk to the bottom of the sea.

Eventually returning to my car, I drove up the road and found more fossils andsigns of explanation—naturally pulling over to read them. While standing theretrying to grasp how there could be something so beautiful and ancient this close tohome, a couple from England pulled up. They wondered where the Petrified SeaGardens were. Embarrassed I explained that they are closed to the public. “But ifyou don’t mind trespassing, go on in it’s right down the road.” “What is trespass-ing?” the man asked. So, I just showed him the signs and fossils that were rightthere. I asked if in England they would have a paved road less than a foot awayfrom such ancient geology. No was his answer. Weeks later, I drove by again andthere was a family from Nevada examining the ancient ground.

A feeling of disappointment stayed with me after this experience. So, I askedmyself what would I prefer to see in regards to The Petrified Sea Gardens? Myanswer was simple—reverence. Because the lack there of was bringing me down,I had to examine where in my life I lack awe for the ancient. And also, more like-ly in my case, where do I not appreciate beauty that is so close it seems ordinary.Honestly, my list was too long to share. But coming up with it has made me moreaware of the awesomeness of our world. The experience also gave me a betterunderstanding of how old the earth is, and how young I am—or even the humanrace as we know it is—in comparison. This has deepened my belief that the plan-et has a wisdom we can only aspire to.

What in your life do you overlook because it is too near to realize its magnitude? What would people travelling from England or Nevada come to see in you?Examine the physical aspects, and also your innatecharacteristics. It may be tempting to say “nothing”.but that would be untrue. We in America have somuch. Let us make the choice to have reverence for notonly what humans make but also for what alreadyexists naturally, within and without.

In peace and awe,

2012 Responsible Dog Ownership Day Americans have embraced the joys of dog ownership for cen-turies, from George Washington and his American Foxhounds toBarack Obama with his Portuguese Water Dog. Each year AKC hosts Responsible Dog Ownership Day inSeptember to educate the dog loving community about theimportance of being a responsible owner. Approximately 500AKC affiliated clubs and other organizations around the countryparticipate by holding events in their local communities.

opening the Rowland Hollow Creek Preserve for hiking, naturestudy, and other passive forms of recreation”, said Maria Trabka,Executive Director of Saratoga P.L.A.N. “Land conservation thrivesin Saratoga County largely due to the support of organizations suchas Rotary which want to continually make their community a betterplace.” This project was also made possible by other partners whohave contributed: individual volunteers; the City of Saratoga Springs;and Charlew Builders all were vital to making the Preserve a reality.

Saratoga P.L.A.N. Stewardship Director, Andy Fyfe, added,“When it opens, the great thing about this Preserve will be that itprovides a wooded walk, the chance to see wildlife, and views ofRowland Hollow Creek less than 3 miles from downtownSaratoga Springs. As Saratoga Spring’s urban core grows, we willfind such natural areas increasingly important.” Current planslook forward to a late August or early September ribbon cutting.

Saratoga Integrative Medicine EducationNetwork Upcoming ProgramThe Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN,has an upcoming program scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 at6:30 pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in theCommunity Room. The program is free and open to the public. Noregistration is required. The name of the program is IntegrativeMedicine for the Holistically Minded Patient, and is a program thattakes an inclusive viewpoint on healthcare.

We live in a world where aggression and domination seems to beprominent, even in medicine. Conventional medicine seems to sole-ly focus on drugs and pills as the answer to eradicate medical ills;whereas alternative therapies seem to totally disregard or downplaythe relevance of properly prescribed medications. However, theneed for the safe combination is needed more today than ever!

Currently in America, the average number of prescriptions perperson is around 13 drugs per year (excluding OTCs). Just 12years earlier, the average was less than 8 drugs per person. This isa 62 percent increase! Furthermore, the World HealthOrganization (WHO) has estimated that herbal and other plant-derived remedies are the most frequently used therapies world-wide. WHO estimates that 4 billion people, 80% of the world pop-ulation, use herbal preparations for primary healthcare.Thankfully, the emergence of a new model is gaining momentumin which practitioners can unite to form a collaborative and inte-gration between the best of modern and ancient wisdom. This isthe definition of a systems biology, patient-centered model. Joinpresenter Dr. Sarah LoBisco to learn about this integrative andcomprehensive medical model and what it would look like.Furthermore, Dr. LoBisco will explain how she would utilize thisapproach with three program attendees with a current health con-dition. Specifically, she would like to focus on those with:

• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome• Menopausal symptoms• Mood imbalances

Sarah LoBisco is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in Vermont andholds a BA in psychology from SUNY Geneseo. Dr. LoBisco is aspeaker on integrative medical topics for medical professionalsand item writer for board questions for licensing NaturopathicPhysicians. She is currently working toward certification inFunctional Medicine from the Institute of Functional Medicine.Dr. LoBisco currently has a private integrative medical consultingpractice in Ballston Spa.

Probiotics are beneficial microbes that are supplemented inthe diet to augment and support our own established(native) friendly intestinal microbes (flora). There are over

400 strains of native bacteria, as well as a few friendly yeast, thatcoexist in a symbiotic relationship with their animal hosts. In fact, there is more bacterial DNA in a human than actual human DNA.Some of the more common probiotic strains provided through fer-mented foods or manufactured supplements include:Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, such as LactobacillusGG, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum,Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis; Streptococcusthermophilus, and the friendly competitive yeast Saccharomycesboulardii. A human infant is born with a sterile gastrointestinal(GI) tract that quickly colonizes with the flora of his mother andhis environment. These beneficial microbes optimize the functionof the gut by assisting in digestion of certain sugars, fiber, starch-es, and proteins, aiding in the absorption of some minerals, and inthe production of vitamin K and some B vitamins. They furtherpromote health through competition with pathogenic (unfriendly)bacteria, by strengthening and nourishing the barrier of the GItract, and as a support for the immune system.

Friendly flora take part in our detoxification system, regulation offat storage, and in the metabolism and recycling of hormones.

Probiotic supplements have an established track record for treatingdiarrheal illnesses, and with helping to restore friendly bacteriaafter the administration of antibiotics. There is evidence for bene-fit in irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, lactose intolerance, yeastinfections, and eczema. Clinical research on the effects of supple-mented probiotics is now suggesting possible roles for friendlybacteria in decreasing inflammation, regulating blood sugar andcholesterol levels, weight management, supporting cognition andmood, allergic conditions, and perhaps osteoporosis.

Probiotics are easily obtained through the consumption of fer-mented foods. Everyone can benefit from exploring foods suchas yogurt with active cultures, kefir, tempeh, miso, kimchee, sauerkraut, lacto-fermented vegetables, natural pickles, ume-boshi, kevita, and kombucha. The established flora thrive on adiet of fiber, so cultivate a healthy environment for your ownfriendly flora by consuming ample amounts of vegetables, fruits, legumes (beans), whole grains, nuts and seeds. The flora alsolike compounds called polyphenols, examples of which arefound in berries, garlic and green tea, among others nutritiousfoods. Avoid excess sugar, fat and processed foods that tend tosupport unfriendly flora. Individuals experiencing GI symptoms, such as excess gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, IBS, andfood sensitivities; or yeast infections, excess stress, travel orantibiotic use, may benefit from the higher probiotic doses found

in supplements. In addition, as outlined above, there is promis-ing evidence that the role of probiotic supplementation mayprove to be even more expansive.

In general a symptomatic individual will benefit more from aproduct that has multiple species of bacteria (such as outlined inthe opening paragraph) and a higher colony count, that is CFUs,or colony forming units. It may also be helpful to include afriendly yeast species, such a Saccharomyces boulardii; espe-cially after antibiotics, recurrent yeast infections, or persistent GIsymptoms. Individuals who are highly symptomatic with GIissues or who are often sensitive to new products, should beginwith lower doses and increase as tolerated.

Some products may be augmented with prebiotics to support thewell being of the probiotic and help the probiotic establish a foothold in the GI tract. Examples include fructooligosaccharides(FOS), inulin, guar gum, and lactulose. These are natural sugarsfound in many healthy foods, such as bananas, artichoke, chicoryroot, burdock, onions, leeks, fruit, soybeans, sweet potatoes, asparagus, green tea. In those individuals with significant GI symp-toms, it is often wise to avoid prebiotics until more GI healing hasoccurred, as these substances may initially add to gas production.

Read the label for proper care of these living organisms. Some

products are shelf stable, but many require refrigeration, and pro-tection from humidity and temperature extremes. Be sure tocheck the expiration date, and favor a product that guarantees aspecific CFU at expiration. Probiotics can be found as powders, capsules, liquids, and in sippy straws for children. As alwayslook for a product that is certified GMP (good manufacturingpractices) compliant.

In antibiotic administration the general recommendation is tobegin a high dose probiotic product immediately and continuefor several days to several weeks after completion of the antibi-otic. With milder GI symptoms an individual may try to transi-tion off of the supplement to food based probiotics in 2-3months. Individuals with more serious health conditions mayrequire longer administration of a supplement, with rotationevery three months or so to products with other probiotic species. As always, be sure to consult with a health care provider to deter-mine if probiotics are appropriate for your health condition, andhow to best proceed. Be well.

by Katrina Clay

As a child I felt a deep sense of dissatisfaction and disap-pointment. Instead of investigating ways to feel love forthe world, I spent most of my first 35 years figuring out

how to change myself to better fit in. What I now recognize is thatthis ache rarely left while I was participating in the world humanshave created, no matter how well I looked to be “fitting in.”Conversely, it often felt satisfied while outsidein nature, where I felt a belonging to the world. Not the man made version, but to the earth anduniverse as a whole. Feeling welcomed by atree as I lean up against its trunk, waving to abird in flight and seeing its wing move justslightly in response, walking through the woodswhere the leaves dance a hello. That longinghas been requesting me to interact with all liv-ing life—trees, plants, domestic and wild ani-mals. It has been asking me to delve deep in tomy core and engage all my senses. Not only theprimary five, but also another sense that comesinto play when the other five are heightened. Icall it my wild sense, or ancient self. This namebecause it feels to me a part of human naturethat has been around for a long time, as weneeded it to keep ourselves keenly aware of anydanger. Now instead of engaging this sense, we

have built houses and buildings to protect us. In doing so, as is oftenthe case with protection of any kind, we also shut ourselves offfrom nature and separated ourselves from the life that supports us.

This morning—months into contemplating the subject—Ireceived the Wilderness Awareness School’s newsletter, in whichit said “According to best estimates, we have been biologicallyAnatomically Modern Humans for around 200,000 years. Wehave been fully behaviorally modern humans for 50,000 years.Agriculture really only began 10,000 years ago. The IndustrialRevolution was over a 100 years ago. The internet was invented30 years ago. iPhones came out less than 5 years ago. What arethe implications of this? We have spent most of our existence asa species as Nature-Connected Bipedal Hunter-Gatherers. Wehave deep instincts and inclinations to behave in this way. Someof these instincts may even be genetic and biological.”

So, how does one go about touching their ancient self? This aware-ness isn’t achieved with a technique, ultimately it happens on itsown. Yet there are things to do that will prepare you to become

more open to allowing it. I’ve come up with 5suggestions.

1Spend time in Nature. While doing so,become a participant in the outdoors. Payattention to all that surrounds you and

what is happening. What birds are singing? What they doing as they sing? Where do thechipmunks live, and for what reason do theysound their alarms? Pay attention to the move-ment of the leaves, ferns and notice whichplants grow wild near you. If you are garden-ing pause from time to time and feel what theplants are doing? Stop before planting some-thing and hold it in your hands, getting toknow it as a being. I find it easier to engagewith nature without other humans around aswell.

2Spend time with animals without an agenda. Whilewith any animal—domestic or wild, pay attention to whatthey are doing. They do not use words for their language,

instead behavior is their language. Humans often think we knowbest, that we don’t listen to what animals are saying through theirbehavior, “correcting” it instead to what we want. Simply observethem out of curiosity about their nature. As you walk alongsideyour dog, imagine what it would be like to be on four legs. What’sthe feeling of being as close to the ground as your cat is? What isthe motive behind digging that hole? Or cawing nonstop?

3Get involved in making music. For a long, long timepeople have been making music for ceremony, celebration, communication and connection. It is understood across all

languages and cultures, although each location has its own prefer-ences and uses. Music allows humans to become aware in a wayverbal language overlooks. It can give expression to feelings thatare otherwise difficult to express. Any kind of music will do.Whatever captures your soul and whisks you away from analysis. In addition there are many studies proving that music is healing.

4Listen to your body. This is an all-body awareness. Whichmeans we need to first have reverence for the body we wereborn with. Look for ways that allow you to feel appreciation

for your body. Exercise, eat well, get body work. Once we have areverence for our bodies, we will more easily listen to it andbelieve it when it tells us something by putting a knot in our stom-ach. Or when we feel the tingles of excitement for what’s coming. This is where animals excel. Especially those that are prey animals, such as horses.

5Let Go Of What you think you are. Positive andnegative labels put limitations on ourselves that we mayotherwise outgrow. By dropping any preconceived notions

of who we are, we make room for being in the moment, alive andawake to our potential. Labels also put filters on our experienceand how we perceive each moment. Without knowing ahead oftime what and how we are to interact, we are more capable ofbeing in the moment—available to spontaneity.

It is easy to want to blame our current predicament on technology. However, my guess is that the separation started long before tech-nology existed. Perhaps the beginning was the birth of agriculture,or the start of verbal language. Regardless, my call out is to shiftyour focused attention that technology and language need andexpand it so that it includes all that surrounds you. Become a par-ticipant of life, centered in your body while allowing your ancient, wild self to awaken. Know deeply that you are an integral part ofthe whole—aware that you belong, not because of what you do, butbecause of what you are. And what you are is alive. Enjoy it.

The journal ‘Molecular Nutrition and Food Research’reported that sulforaphane, one of the primary phytochem-icals in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that helps

them prevent cancer, has been shown for the first time to selec-tively target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal prostatecells healthy and unaffected.

What was so amazing about this discovery is that it showed thatprostate tumor growth was slowed by a diet containing sul-foraphane and that “sulforaphane can target cancer cells throughmultiple chemopreventive mechanisms.” This study showed forthe first time that “sulforaphane selectively targets benign hyper-plasia cells and cancerous prostate cells while leaving the normalprostate cells unaffected.” What this points to is the innate intelli-gence in plant compounds; no pharmaceutical or isolated neu-traceutical can do that.

In a similar study, brassica vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) were associated with decreased risk ofcolon cancers.

The researchers at Oregon State University found that sul-foraphane, which is found at fairly high levels in broccoli, cauli-flower and other cruciferous vegetables, is an inhibitor of anenzyme that plays a role in whether certain genes are expressed ornot, such as tumor suppressor genes.

This exciting news comes on the heels of other news about thecruciferous vegetables that show they are proven cancer-fightingfoods.

One study found teaming up fresh broccoli with a spicy food thatcontains the enzyme myrosinase significantly enhances eachfood’s individual cancer-fighting power and ensures that absorp-tion takes place in the upper part of the digestive system whereyou'll get the maximum health benefit.

What are those foods? Radishes, cabbage, arugula, watercress, and Brussels sprouts all boost the benefits found in broccoli. Thestudy noted that you only receive these benefits if the vegetablesare eaten raw or lightly steamed. The more broccoli is cooked themore these fragile phytonutrients are damaged. If the broccoli ismush it’s useless nutritionally.

Do supplements that are made of isolated neutraceuticals have thesame effect in the body as whole foods? In another study thatlooked at supplements that just contain sulphoraphane without theother parts of the broccoli plant they discovered that it was notwell absorbed and, of course, not well utilized.

This points to the enormous value of eating whole foods, andwhen necessary, use only whole food supplements -- where careis taken to grow plants organically and preserve and use the entireplant in the supplement. When choosing a cruciferous productkeep these things in mind.

The potential real whole foods and whole food supplements have tonourish our bodies should now be readily apparent. They turn on ourgenes and amplify our ability to fight cancer. Maybe, as Dr. Servan-Schreiber, described in his book Anti-Cancer5 we don’t have cancergenes, but “fast food intolerant genes.” We build an anti-cancer biol-ogy with the food we eat three times a day.

DREAMING THESOUL BACK HOMEby Robert Moss

“Again and again, in dreams,” writes best-selling author and world-renowned dreamexplorer Robert Moss in Dreaming theSoul Back Home: Shamanic Dreaming forHealing and Becoming Whole (NewWorld Library, June 15, 2012), “our high-er or greater self comes stalking us.” Thisspirit self comes because, “in the course of

any life we are liable to suffer soul loss and because in order to bewhole and well, we must find the means of soul recovery.”

Dreaming the Soul Back Home explains how we lose connectionwith vital parts of ourselves during times of transition, hardship, change, and struggle. “On a visceral level, we all know how soulloss comes about,” writes Moss. “We suffer pain or trauma orabuse, we are overwhelmed by grief or guilt or shame, and partof us goes away because it doesn’t want to stay in a world thatseems so harsh and cruel.”

Dreaming the Soul Back Home explores these five forms of soulloss or disconnection: • Loss of vital energy —You find yourself torpid and listless,

reluctant to get out of bed. Your days seem drab and gray andjoyless. There is something missing in you, and you try to stuffthe hole with sugar or booze.

• Loss of younger selves — You have lost younger versions ofyourself — the young child with abounding energy and thatbeautiful imagination, that fine romantic who was hurt orbetrayed as a teen, that inner poet or businessman who wantedto make life choices different from the ones you made.

• Loss of animal spirits—Indigenous and ancestral shamansknow that we are all connected to the world of the animal pow-ers, and that by recognizing and nurturing our relation with ani-mal spirits, we find and follow the natural path of our energies.Yet many of us have lost this primal connection.

• Loss of ancestral soul —When we awaken to ancestral soul,we become ready to claim the connection with wisdom-keep-ers and protectors who can help us to reestablish healthy psy-chic boundaries and clear out what does not belong with us.

• Loss of connection with the Greater Self — Ultimately we canonly make peace between the many aspects of our selves, and fol-low a path of true spiritual evolution, by opening or reopening adirect and conscious connection with the Self on a higher level.

Q&A with Robert Moss Why does the soul have a hard time staying in the body? We suffer pain or abuse, grief or shame, and part of us fids theworld so cruel that we want to go away. Soul loss is also causedby wrenching life choices: we decide to leave a relationship, ahome, a job, a country, a lifestyle — but part of us resists thatchoice, sometimes to the point of splitting away and withdraw-ing its energy from our lives. We also lose soul energy when wegive up on our dreams and settle for a life of dull compromise, refusing to trust ourselves to love or to take that creative leap.

Where does soul go when it leaves? Sometimes we find that a part of ourselves is stuck in the oldplace, in Grandma’s house, or in the apartment we shared withour first love. Sometimes a soul part we lost seems to be livingin a separate reality, like the land of the Lost Boys in Peter Pan.When we wish ourselves dead, a part of our soul may go far way,as far as a Land of the Dead.

Are all aspects of soul recoverable? There are parts that are so damaged we don’t want them back.Sometime they appear burned or charred, dark or addicted.Sometimes our life choices are so radical that a part of ourselvessimply cannot be persuaded to share our present situation. Forexample, my inner businessman is quite disgusted with thechoices I have made, and won’t stay close to me unless I makemoney more of a priority than I am likely to do!

What is the first step that someone who would like to experi-ence more soul in their life to take? You do some cleanup, and you ask for help. In the book, as in myretreats, I offer practical guidance for psychic cleansing andrelease. One of my favorites is a very simple fire releasing inwhich we cast out any heavy energies that are holding us backand clear a space for vital soul to come back in. It’s very impor-tant to remember that we have help available, including from ourspiritual allies and our own Greater Self, and that it’s always agood idea to ask for help nicely.

What role does addiction play in soul loss? Addiction can be both a cause and an effect of soul loss. Part of ourbrighter energy may leave us if we fall into habits and company itdoesn’t like. When we are missing a part of ourselves, things comein to fill the gap, and we reach for things to fill that gap. From ashamanic viewpoint, addictions are often worsened by spirits of thedead who are seeking to feed their own cravings through a livingperson. I have never met a true alcoholic, for example, who has not(from my viewpoint) been accompanied by dead drunks. In thebook, as in my programs, I offer practical guidance to createhealthy psychic boundaries between the living and the deceased.

Robert Moss is the author of Dreaming the Soul Back Home andnumerous other books about dreaming, shamanism, and imagina-tion. His fascination with the dreamworld began in his childhood inAustralia, when he had three near-death experiences and firstlearned the ways of a traditional dreaming people through his friend-ship with Aborigines. Yesterday I had a migraine and after 20 minutes of lighttherapy it started to ease up. My friend sprained her wristand after 20 minutes of light therapy the pain was better

and the same happened for a woman who needs a knee replace-ment soon and was in pain after having been on her feet for 12hours. How can this be? The use of light in healing has been stud-ied for ages but it is just recently that it is being put to use in ther-apeutic settings.

Light creates a spectrum, infrared at one end, red next and the col-ors of the rainbow to purple, then into ultraviolet. SAD, SeasonalAffect Disorder is lessened with exposure to full spectrum light.Ultraviolet light stimulates the production of Vitimin D in the skintans us and is related to skin cancers.

Infrared has been shown to penetrate the deepest in tissue, releas-ing nitric oxide, a powerful chemical in the body, responsible forpain relief and relaxation of blood vessels so more nutrients canget to the cells and the toxins are washed away easier. In the caseof the sprained wrist, the infrared LED lights in the pad increasedher nitric oxide. They also have a thermogenic effect – feeling ofwarm. The discovery of nitric oxide provided the researchers withthe Nobel Peace Prize in the late 90’s. Supplements have beencreated but the benefits only seem to occur with the body’s ownproduction of nitric oxide.

Some recent studies with blue LED light therapy are showing thatblue light exposure kills bacteria, virus and even MRSA. EllisHospital is using a blue light emitting robot to disinfect theirrooms. You may have seen ads for acne treatments using bluelight therapy. RPI in Troy did a study in 2006 with teens to resettheir biologic clock so they were more alert in the morning andwent to bed earlier. The blue light can reset your circadian rhythmso help with jet lag, insomnia and shift work.

Red LED light was used in a study in 2003 by NASA to see if itcould decrease the side effects of cancer treatments and encourageplant growth in space. In 2008, it was found that red LED lightsincreased mitochondrial function at a cellular level. This meansmore energy, healthier cells, memory and mood boosts. Red lightworks as well as NSAIDS and COX 2 inhibitors in pain andinflammation reduction with no side effects.

An added benefit of LED light therapy, is that it works like a nat-ural Botox in wrinkle reduction. A study of daily sessions for 9weeks vastly reduced wrinkles and fine lines and increased colla-gen production and cell rejuvenation.

Look around, you will see more and more about light therapy. I usea machine that combines infrared, red and blue LED lights in myoffice. I have also found instructions on how to convert your tanningbed into a red light bed for wrinkle reduction. St. Peter’s Hospital inAlbany is promoting Anodyne therapy which is infrared. Eveninfomercials with Robert Wagner are promoting lights.

It is the wave of the future.

Do you notice moments when a grand gesture of red isclose to the surface? Are there times when you sense aclear wash of blue, a decisive black line, maybe faint

spots of green? Would you like to express your creativity freely, without observing a subject or having something in mind? Withsimple materials, drawing and painting intuitively can be playful, meditative, insightful, healing. By releasing judgements, there isdiscovery, and the spontaneity of seeing what unfolds.Watercolors, tempera paints, oil pastels, and colored pencil sticksare easy to use, indoors and out, on many kinds of papers.

Try engaging your physical body first, with breathing, stretching, walking, moving. Invite your inner wonder to guide your gesture, hand or brush, and color selection. Start just where you are, focus-ing on the painting process instead of working toward a product.Enjoy exploring, without expectations! Sharing the experiencewith a friend or small group supports staying present and openingto possibilities. Both first-time painters and practicing artists caninvite their unique voices to speak. No previous experience isneeded. Whether the front of a refrigerator, the back of a closetdoor, the shade of a summer tree, where would you make spacefor your creativity to emerge?

Following your inner voice is essential to living your life atits highest potential. It’s amazing how many times I haveforgotten this and continually tried fitting a square peg into

a round hole. I have put so much effort into changing somethingin my life and realized later why it was so difficult and didn’twork out the way I had intended. I have had countless experiencesthat have taught me that when I listen closely to my inner voice, Ifind that I am on the right path at the right moment and life justmoves along smoothly with seemingly little effort on my part.

Everyone identifies with their inner knowing in different ways. Some may feel a sensation in their stomach, “see” images in theform of pictures or symbols or hear a voice that is not necessarilycoming from outside of them or inside their head.

Following my “gut instinct”- a term many are familiar with- orinner voice is something that I began doing when I was very youngwithout even realizing it. I have always felt a sensation in my lowerstomach if I was not listening. There have been times that I havegotten an actual “punch” in my stomach if I was about to do some-thing that went against my true nature. When I was in my earlytwenties, I started dating someone who I had an immediate physi-cal attraction to. One week later, I felt a sick, gut-wrenching achein my lower belly. I instinctively knew this feeling was a warningthat all was not right with this relationship. But I ignored the warn-ing and forged ahead. Four years later and still in the same rela-tionship, I remember saying to myself that I could marry him. Thistime the “punch” to my gut was so strong I literally bent over andheld my stomach. This time I knew I had to listen.

Sometimes we don’t listen because we have more to learn. Howamazing would life be if we listened the first time and followedour true path, thus eliminating the drama and heartache? Itrequires courage to listen. Many problems that people face in lifehave to do with not listening to what their inner voice is tellingthem. These same problems can be solved by following that innerknowing. We as spiritual beings in human form have access to thisinformation at all times.

A cousin of mine, a beautiful young woman in her thirties, madea decision a few years ago to live with her then boyfriend follow-ing an eight month separation caused by his drug addiction. Shetold me she knew it wasn’t the right decision, but she didn’t havethe courage at that time to follow the nagging inner voice. He sub-

sequently moved in, his addiction got worse and less than a yearlater (and many tearful nights) she struggled to kick him out.

There are countless stories about couples who get married and sub-sequently divorce years later who have said, “I knew it wasn’t rightbefore we got married”. What prevents people from listening to thisinner knowing? What are we afraid of? Trusting ourselves is the firststep to hearing the message and knowing we can handle whatevercomes our way. It comes from a deep sense of trust within to knowthere is a process and it will lead you to where you need to be.

About ten years ago, I woke in the middle of the night with a startand sat bolt upright. I heard a voice say to me “Trust the process”.At the time, I was struggling with a decision of whether or not toend a six year relationship. I was scared because I was in my mid-thirties and my fear was about giving up my dream of getting mar-ried and having a family. That night I vowed to listen to that voiceand within a couple of weeks, I let go of the relationship. Lookingback, I know it was the best decision for both of us although it wasdifficult at the time. I am now happily married to the love of mylife and we have a beautiful daughter together.

To begin to learn how to listen and follow your own inner voice,I have included three simple ideas:

1Become silent for at least five minutes daily. It is in this spacethat you’ll be more apt to hear your own inner messages andbegin to recognize the signs that are unique to you. Since ini-

tially your instincts could be subtle signs, you’ll need to sit quiet-ly to become familiar with your own. Eventually with practice, you’ll be able to hear your inner voice when you are going aboutyour daily life.

2Try following a message you get, however subtle and seewhere it takes you. At first, try this with smaller, daily deci-sions—such as where to eat when deciding on a restaurant.

See what comes up spontaneously without any thought. Follow itand notice what happens.

3If faced with a decision that feels heavy for you, try comingup with several options and then imagine each one separate-ly. As you imagine each one, notice how you feel and where

you get the sensation. Write these feelings down as you go througheach scenario. Which makes you feel the best? Go with that one.Sometimes you won’t know the why behind the choice right away, but you will probably be enlightened at an unexpected time.

Once you become familiar with your own inner voice or knowingtake the chance and start following the messages more consistent-ly. You’ll find that life will be easier and lighter and probablymore joyful. When you are living life on your true path, the joywill emanate from you.

Question: Is there any procedure or program that anyof you offer to alleviate a problem with lymph-edema?

Editor’s Note: As the editor of this column, sometimes it is bet-ter to let stand the more valued commentaries of colleagues. Inthis case, I have chosen to do just that. I have used Jin Shin Jutsuto alleviate symptoms, but my experience with this condition hasled me to refer this condition to the skills enumerated by by mytwo colleagues here.

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St ClairLymphedema is fluid retention and tissue swelling usually due toa compromised lymphatic system. In the spaces between tissue

(interstitial) fluids become trapped and are not removed as efficiently as they could leading to lymphatic obstruction andedema. This can lead to gross swelling of the limbs, elephantititsand even death. When you consider the lymphatic system alsotransports white blood cells, our body's immunity, the benefits ofa well functioning lymph system become apparent. Western treat-ment would include compression for simple lymphedema, drainage for moderate and possibly even lymph vessel grafting forsevere.

If you are looking for a way to keep a compromised immune sys-tem working at it’s best, I believe acupuncture holds one of thesafest and most effective alternatives. In Chinese Medicine every-thing we talk about has to do with flow. Disease occurs whenthings stop flowing. It could be stagnation of blood, lymph orpressure on a nerve leading to things like pain, heart attack, strokeor even cancer. When I do acupuncture, the sterile needles createa flow of blood, white blood cells and endorphins to the site. Asfar as lymphedema is concerned, this helps to flush out the areaand creates an immune response to help facilitate healing.

I once had a 70 year old man come to me with lymphedema andcellulitis, which is an infection in the cells. It was in both legs, they were red, hot to the touch and swollen up like balloons. Hehad already undergone two courses of powerful antibiotics, andwhen he came to me the next step his doctors were consideringwas amputating his legs. He continued on his antibiotics and hadacupuncture and within four visits his legs were almost normal

Chiropractor; Lynn AllisonLymph-edema is retention of fluid causing an enlargement of anextremity or body area. It is common post surgery especiallywhen lymph nodes have been removed. Breast cancer surgeryoften requires the removal of nodes in the armpit so lymph edemaof the arm is common.

Lymph is a fluid from out blood that delivers nutrients to cells andwashes away waste from the cell. The waste is taken to smallerlymph nodes, then to larger nodes to end up deposited in the tho-racic ducts to be eliminated by the kidney or colon. Cells’ healthdepends on functional lymph.

Lymph edema is unsightly and uncomfortable and is detrimentalto the tissues. I personally experienced a mild case post shouldersurgery where no nodes were removed but nodes in my feet con-gested to the point where I wore an entire shoe size larger.

I use Avalon light therapy. A combo of red, infrared and blueLED light thins the lymph and relaxes the blood vessels allowingthe lymph to return to the thoracic duct and deliver nutrients to thecells in the area. It takes repeated sessions and may become adaily therapy. Low level light therapy has been shown to make adifference in lymph removal as well as releasing the water trappedby collagen in scar tissue. When the scar tissue is softened, thelymph drainage can improve.

Lymph movement occurs best with light surface massage. I useCranial Sacral therapy, light touch bodywork, which seems to aidin lymph removal. I worked with one woman as she went throughbreast cancer surgery and chemo with the approval of her surgeonto optimize the maintenance of normal lymph function. She alsochanged her diet to organic vegan and lost weight. She neverexperienced edema.

It is best to experiment with the technique and practitioner and touse compression or wrapping to stimulate the body into remem-bering how to function at its best.

In October of 2011 my husband Drew and I found out we wereexpecting our first child. We were over the moon with excite-ment and anticipation of our new arrival and, like many soon-

to-be new parents, completely clueless about pregnancy andeverything that follows. But we were avid readers and confidentthat the usual literature like “What To Expect When You’reExpecting” would help guide us on our journey into parenthood.

By November it was time for our first prenatal appointment withmy obgyn whose practice included five doctors and a midwife. We were looking forward to the visit. For all our reading we stillfelt unprepared. We dutifully wrote our list of questions andsketched out a birth plan as suggested by several books. We wereanxious to go over everything in detail with our obstetrician how-ever, the friendly, nurturing visit that we had anticipated was farfrom the impersonal, hurried reality of what transpired.

We expected to see my doctor’s familiar face upon entering theexam room; the face I saw faithfully for exams over the previous5 years. Instead, we were greeted by another doctor. Sheexplained that prior to delivery I would have to be seen by eachmember of the practice as any one could be the attending physi-cian on my due date. We were confused but eager to go over ourquestions all the same.

Before I could reach into my purse for our list, Drew was handedthree envelopes containing, “...all the information you will needthroughout your pregnancy and the answers to any questions youcan possibly come up with.” We weren’t thrilled with thisarrangement. I pulled out our birth plan and then the doctorlaughed. She informed us that a birth plan was not only unneces-sary but unlikely to be honored in the hospital. She went on to tellus that because I was in my early thirties and not at ideal weight,my pregnancy was considered geriatric and high risk. She sug-gested making an appointment with an anesthesiologist for a trialintubation for what was to be my scheduled cesarian.

Fifteen minutes after we entered that exam room the doctor wasgone and we were scared. Geriatric? High risk? Cesarian? Did wehave to accept this as the only method of care? Talking with fam-ily and friends only reinforced that we would have to scrap the“perfect pregnancy” picture that was painted in our minds and set-tle for the medical management model like everyone else.

A few weeks after that office visit, wehad a wonderful conversation with afriend that later turned our hopeless-ness into happiness. She had a home-birth. I'll admit that the idea of givingbirth at home in 2012 seemed silly atfirst. It conjured up images of oldworld women lying helpless in thedark while their midwives stood byidly. That said, our friend describedthe model of care that we wanted. Wewanted a trained professional whowas knowledgeable about pregnancy, labor, and birth. We wanted a safe andintervention-free delivery. We wantedour baby to be healthy and to enterthis world peacefully. After moreresearch and watching documentarieslike “The Business of Being Born andPregnant In America, our minds weremade up; we wanted a midwife and awe wanted a homebirth.

Our first appointment with our mid-wife, Kelly McDermott of SageFemme Midwifery, was a wonderful hour and a half long visit. In one sitting all of our major questions were answered alongwith some we never thought to ask. At subsequent visits, mybaby and I were thoughtfully examined, we discussed goodnutrition and exercise, and I was treated like the healthy pregnantwoman that I was. The words cesarian, geriatric, or high-riskwere never repeated in reference to my pregnancy. Drew and I

were finally heard and being pregnantno longer felt like a scary medicalcondition.

On May 21st at 6:30am my waterbroke, three weeks early. The birthingtub hadn't been picked up. The towelsand newborn blankets weren't yetwashed. The bed in our guestroomhadn't been made. But I wasn't nerv-ous or anxious. I quietly labored withmy dog, my husband, mother in law,and my midwives at my side. I walkedaround our living room. I sat in ourbathtub and shower. I rocked back andforth on a birthing-ball while my hus-band rubbed my back. I even napped. At seven o'clock that evening, I gavebirth to our beautiful, healthy babygirl, intervention free. It wasn't at allthe horror that people let on. It wasbeautiful, intimate, loving, and amaz-ing. It was the peaceful entrance intothis world that we envisioned for ourdaughter and so much more. I feel a

deeper connection with the miracle that is life and I feel empow-ered as a woman. I am so grateful for this journey.

An open heart chakra is one that experiences deep devo-tion, a divine love. It loves for love’s sake alone, with-out expecting reciprocation. This devotion, or Bhakti

love, in yoga, is expressed as complete dedication and admira-tion. It may be felt towards a lover, a deity, a parent, a teacher, achild, or even the planet. You experience an inner state of peaceand harmony, are filled with self adoration, and this completeacceptance radiates into the hearts of others. You have a joyfuland compassionate nature. You understand that the love youexperience is one love, expanding out into everything in the uni-verse. Knowing this, you put your heart into everything you do.You are open to welcoming new people into your heart. Youwalk with your heart center wide open to the world. You let yourheart rule and are receptive to touch. You allow the flow of lifeto breeze through you, uninhibited by fear. This liberty is demon-strated in fullness of breath. You share your love for others freely

as well as receive love effortlessly. Love isboundless and you abide within this infinitebliss. An anahata chakra that needs healingwill resist receiving love and experience agreat fear for sharing love. You are moreinterested in recognition, even secretly, youmay even be extremely popular, but do nothave deep intimacy with others. You maycare very much for others, but you do notgive this care to yourself. You experiencetoo much fear of being hurt to allow for aselfless love to enter your heart. You feelseparate from others and believe love is lim-ited. You resist touch. You may walk

hunched over with your heart closed or protected. You may resistfeelings of happiness and fulfillment. You may restrict your airflow and may experience breathing challenges. You are afraid tolet love in and be nurtured. You may experience issues with yourheart, lungs, breast, thymus or upper back.

To balance your 4th Chakra - Eat greens, keep your heart centeropen as you move throughout the day, spend time with the greenearth, harmoniously flowing or any new age music, rhythm, drumming, wear green and pink, rose quartz, jade, emerald, roseoil, Cobra, Sun Salutations, Eka Bhujangasana, Upward FacingDog, Bird, Airplane, Hanuman, Supported Cobra, Shoulderstandor Legs Up the Wall, Bhakti Yoga, meditate on compassion.

It may appear as if we are living longer, but our long-term quali-ty of life is poorer and overall happiness is decreasing. There isa high cost of our current American obesity epidemic on our

overall health and quality of life. Our fast paced, nutrient poorlifestyles are decreasing self-esteem while increasing uncontrollablewaistlines, but there is more to the picture than weight control withour diet. Our overfed, yet malnourished, society is also creating neg-ative health effects on our bodies and brains. Furthermore, thesedownstream ill effects cause financial strain to our health system robour future leaders of creative and intelligent working minds.

The result of our processed and fast food society has created a nationof children brains’ which are starving. They are less able to thinkabstractly and complete sentences beyond a tweet. Furthermore, they are now dying from diseases that were typically only affectedadults. According to a Report by the Worldwatch Institute:

And hunger destroys would-be Einsteins and Gandhis inchildhood, while productivity losses among those whoreach adulthood are widespread. ..

…hungry women are less able to provide for their fami-lies and to properly nourish their own bodies duringpregnancy, which often results in lifelong impairment fortheir children and a consequent loss of personal and com-munity potential.

…So whether the problem stems from hunger or fromovereating, whether it occurs in poor countries or richones, malnutrition is bound to skew and slow a country’sdevelopment. ….

Therefore, eating “cheap” isn’t saving us money in the long run.Dr. Hyman discusses the costs beyond financial of “cheap” junkfood on our future generation:

Never before in human history have we seen “adult onset”or type 2 diabetes in children. There has been an over1,000% increase in type 2 diabetes in children over the lasttwo decades. Fifteen years ago 3% of new cases of dia-betes in children were type 2 diabetes. Now it is 50%.Forty percent of children are now overweight and 2 mil-lion are morbidly obese, exceeding the 99th percentile forweight. Scientists say that we have only 3,600 cases oftype 2 diabetes in children. Nonsense. Almost all of those2 million morbidly obese kids have either pre-diabetes ordiabetes or what we should call “diabesity”. In adults

25% of diabetics and 90% of pre-diabetics are not diag-nosed. In children most of the cases are missed.”

A study published this week in the New England Journalof Medicine found that medications don’t work and gen-eral lifestyle instruction isn’t much help either to treattype 2 diabetes in children. And the disease is more rap-idly progressive and aggressive in children. Kids whohaven’t even learned to swallow a pill are now facinggiving themselves daily insulin injections. Poor andminority kids are more heavily afflicted.

Thankfully, modern medicine is beginning to see the light ofchanging our food quality and lifestyle choices. In other words, chasing genes as the cause of diseases and using powerful pillswith dangerous side-effects is not the best first line of defense, economically or medicinally. Sure, our genes play a role in ourrisk factors for diseases, but not in their manifestation. We needto shift to retraining our health experts on the real lifestyle factorsthat affect obesity rates. A recent article in Medscape explains:

When it comes to predicting the risk for common dis-eases, including cancer, genome sequencing is not amagic bullet. It might be a valuable tool for people witha strong family history of a disease, but not for the vastmajority of people, researchers report.

Genomic sequencing will never be a crystal ball that canreliably predict future health issues, explained researcherBert Vogelstein, MD, Clayton Professor of Oncologyand Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel CancerCenter in Baltimore, Maryland. "It cannot substitute forconventional risk-management strategies, including rou-tine check-ups and lifestyle optimization," he said at apress briefing here at the American Association forCancer Research 103rd Annual Meeting. Dr. Vogelsteinwas summarizing the results of a study presented at themeeting and simultaneously published online April 2 inScience Translational Medicine.

Don’t get me wrong, we need medication when the issue is keep-ing people alive, but not as the main treatment in health and qual-ity of life care. Rather, prescriptions should be used appropriatelyfor the right conditions, not in replacement of poor lifestyle choic-es. In other words, using a statin medication for a man to preventa secondary heart attack, while addressing his lifestyle risk factorsmakes sense; however, it doesn’t make sense to give the sameman a pill for diabetes and reflux as he continues to chow downon Twinkies, corn dogs, and soda-pop. We should build our foun-dation on a healthy diet and lifestyle modification.

Dr. Hyman continues:Do we really think we can medicate our way out of a baddiet? Can we really overcome the 54 gallons of soda con-sumed every year by the average American, or the 34 tea-spoons of sugar consumed DAILY by the average childin America with a medication, or some handouts on eat-ing better? One of the drugs used in the study, Avandia, has been responsible for over 200,000 deaths from heartattacks since it was introduced in 1999. The Food and

Drug Administration has restricted its use. Should we beusing this in children? This is pharmageddon.

One Answer: Eating at Home (Dr. Hyman):Research shows that children who have regular mealswith their parents do better in every way, from bettergrades, to healthier relationships, to staying out of trou-ble. They are 42 percent less likely to drink, 50 percentless likely to smoke and 66 percent less like to smokemarijuana. Regular family dinners protect girls frombulimia, anorexia, and diet pills. Family dinners alsoreduce the incidence of childhood obesity. In a study onhousehold routines and obesity in US pre-school agedchildren, it was shown that kids as young as four have alower risk of obesity if they eat regular family dinners, have enough sleep, and don’t watch TV on weekdays.

We complain of not having enough time to cook, butAmericans spend more time watching cooking on the FoodNetwork, than actually preparing their own meals. In hisseries Food Revolution, Jamie Oliver showed us how wehave raised a generation of Americans who can’t recognizea single vegetable or fruit, and don’t know how to cook.

A recent meta-analysis in Pediatrics confirmed these results and howtaking time for our children, with food and love, saves their health:

CONCLUSIONS: Educational and public health initia-tives aimed at promoting shared family mealtimes mayimprove nutritional health of children and adolescents.Clinicians may advise their patients about the benefits ofsharing 3 or more family mealtimes per week; benefitsinclude a reduction in the odds for overweight (12%), eat-ing unhealthy foods (20%), and disordered eating (35%)and an increase in the odds for eating healthy foods (24%).

I love this article, because it discusses not highlighting the health ben-efits of food, but using it a means of bonding, community, and socialsupport. Investing in healthy foods in the long run will cut our spend-ing and increase our quality of life. We can take back our children!

Here’s one simple way to help protect our own and children’sbrain and assist with blood sugar: Why not substitute the yummyflavor of cinnamon to your hot beverage to balance blood sugar, control inflammation, and potentially help your brain?

Recent studies have shown inhibition of A‚ plaque formationin vitro and in vivo by compounds from natural sources.

Cinnamon is widely used by humans, both as a spice andas a traditional medicine. It is, perhaps, one of the oldestherbal medicines, having been mentioned in the Bible

(Exodus, Proverbs and Song of Songs) and in Chinesetexts as long as 4,000 years ago

...The unique healing abilities of cinnamon are due tovarious components such as cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, inaddition to a wide range of other volatile substancesincluding safrole, coumarin and cinnamic acid esters

...Cinnamon has unique medicinal abilities such asblood sugar control, anti-oxidant, anti inflammatoryand anti-microbial activities.

..Here, we demonstrate the use of a natural substancebased on aqueous cinnamon extract (CEppt) as an effi-cacious therapeutic agent that inhibits A‚ oligomer for-mation and ameliorates AD symptoms. In addition, wesuggest the use of an efficacious platform for screeningmolecules as AD drugs using in vitro cell culture andin vivo AD fly and aggressive AD mouse model.
