Governing Board authorized strategic review of ESA publishing program by knowledgeable publishing industry consultants.
Assessed current complex publishing environment, ESA journal performance, and identified long-term trends and options to address them.
ESA’s journals are well-regarded and editorially sound.
Revenue and subscriptions have been declining, a trend likely to accelerate.
ESA is in a great position to make a planned change now rather than wait for a crisis.
Stay the course.
Improve our subscription sales and online journal platform.
Create publishing partnership with a large publisher in order to improve the dissemination and financial performance of the journals.
The Governing Board unanimously authorized ESA staff to negotiate with potential publishers and, in consultation with the Executive Committee, recommend an agreement for Governing Board approval.
Publisher will host journals online and market/sell subscriptions on behalf of ESA.
Increases journal reach and potential for more impact.
Little change from author and member perspective.
ESA retains editorial control and ownership of the journals and content.
Ensures financial health of the journal program and ESA as a whole in a rapidly changing publishing world.

Most members of the SWBESA perform youth outreach activities as part of our mission to serve clientele. For 2012, our Committee compiled a record of youth outreach activities conducted by members of our Branch. Our Committee has repeated this compilation of youth activities for 2013.Approximately, 300,000 youth were contacted by Andrine in 2013!
The complied activities of this committee are too numerous to list in a few slides. Youth outreach in 2013 represents approximately 334,000 student contacts by our Branch members in various ways and in various settings by members of the committee.
Southwestern Branch members are strongly encouraged to read the Youth Science Committee’s full report. It is extraordinary!
