GOLDEN RULESFOR CRUISING ON THE ERNE WATERWAY

The Erne Waterway is not difficult to navigate, but there are some Golden Rules which MUSTBE OBEYED AT ALL TIMES IF YOU ARE NOT TO RUN AGROUND or get into other trouble.It must be appreciated that the Erne is a natural waterway and not dredged deep to the sideslike canal systems. In fact, the banks of the rivers and the shores of all the islands are normallyVERY SHALLOW a good way from the shore line and are quite often rocky!

Golden Rule No 1: NEVER CRUISE CLOSE TO THE SHORE (unless it is marked on the mapthat there is a good natural bank mooring). Keep more or less MID-STREAM wherever thereare no markers, and give islands a very wide berth, at least 50-100 metres, unless there is ajetty on the island.

DO NOT HUG SHORES, CUT CORNERS OR CROSS CLOSE TO THE POINTS OF ISLANDS!

Golden Rule No 2: CHECK YOUR POSITION WITH THE MAP AT REGULAR INTERVALS sothat you know exactly where you are. The Erne has many islands, but an island, looking froma cruiser, sometimes appears to be part of the mainland, and therefore it is often necessary tojust check where you have been as well as where you are going. Always obey the markers andin the lake sections do not go too close to them.

Golden Rule No 3: WEATHER. TAKE NOTICE OF WEATHER FORECASTS BEFORE YOUCROSS THE WIDE SECTIONS OF THE LAKES, PARTICULARLY NORTH-WEST OF THECAUTIONARY LINE SHOWN ON THE MAP OF LOWER LOUGH ERNE. THIS IS A VERY WIDEAREA, AS BIG AS ANY OPEN SEA, AND IN ANYTHING MORE THAN FRESH WINDS CANCREATE WAVES FROM ONE TO TWO METRES HIGH.

Golden Rule No 4: In narrow parts of the waterway, always go to the right to give way tooncoming boats. SLOW RIGHT DOWN IN ALL 5 KNOT AREAS or when PASSING MOOREDCRUISERS, SMALL BOATS AND ANGLERS.

GOLDENE REGELNFür Kapitäne auf den Wasserwegen des Erne

Das Navigieren auf dem Erne ist einfach und problemlos, wenn Sie die nachfolgenden GoldenenRegeln für eine sorgen - und unfallfreie Fahrt beachten und einhalten. Denken Sie daran, dassder Erne ein natürlicher Wasserweg und nicht wie ein Kanalsystem an den Seiten tief ausgebaggertist. Meist sind die Fluss-und Seeufer flach auslaufend und oft auch felsig.

Goldene Regel Nr. 1: FAHREN SIE NIE NAHE DEM UFER ENTLANG (ausgenommen dieNavigationskarte erlaubt es). Wo keine Markierungen sind, empfiehlt es sich, in der Strommittezu fahren und Inseln weiträumig (in mindestens 50-100 Meter Abstand) zu passieren, wenn dieInsel über keine Anlegestelle verfügt. SCHLEICHEN SIE NICHT DEN UFERN ENTLANG,SCHNEIDEN SIE KEINE KURVEN, UND HALTEN SIE GUTEN ABSTAND ZU LANDZUNGEN!

Goldene Regel Nr. 2: VERGLEICHEN SIE IHRE POSITION IN REGELMÄSSIGEN ABSTÄNDENMIT DER NAVIGATIONSKARTE. Der Erne ist voller Inseln, aber vom Boot aus betrachtet sehenInseln oft wie Festland aus, weshalb es wichtig ist, gelegentlich mit Hilfe der Karte zu überprüfen,woher Sie gekommen sind und wohin Sie nun fahren. Folgen Sie den markierungen, aber gehenSie, vor allem im offenen Seengebiet, nicht zu nahe an diese heran.

Goldene Regel Nr. 3: WETTER. BEACHTEN SIE DIE WETTERVORHERSAGEN, BEVORSIE DEN GROSSEN SEE BEFAHREN, insbesondere nordwestlich der auf der Karte des LowerLough Erne eingezeichneten Warnlinie. Dies ist eine sehr grosse, offene Wasserfläche, die beifrischem Wind einen Wellengang von 1 bis 2 Metern Höhe erreichen kann.

Study your handbook carefully before starting your cruise.

Under no circumstances go into areas coloured in light blue - theseare shallow and dangerous.

Keep mid-channel in rivers and between islands and do not go closeto river banks and shores of the lakes and islands - unless beingdirected by markers, or going to a jetty or bank mooring.

Obey the special instructions printed on the map near certain jetties,markers, bridges, etc.

Follow the routes printed on the map in certain areas - they areintended to keep you out of trouble!

Folgen Sie den in der Navigationskarte eingezeichneten Routen fürgewisse Streckenabschnitte - diese helfen Ihnen, den korrekten Kurszu halten.

Navigation markers (1 and 2) (Port andStarboard) have top marks painted red andwhite. Craft must pass the marker on theside painted white (some markers are threedimensional). Middle ground markers (3)should be given a wide berth and can bepassed on either side. Where two middleground markers are together do not gobetween them. Many markers bear areference number which can be used toidentify the position of the craft.Do not pass “no entry” marker (4).

Slow right down when passing moored craft, anglers andsmall boats.

When meeting craft head-on - go to the right hand side.

Moor tidily and leave room for other boats. Adjust boatfenders.

Don’t ‘hog’ jetties. Help other boats to moor when jettyspace is restricted. Tie boats abreast if necessary.48 hours legal stop.

Don’t throw litter in the lakes - this is an offence!
