Put up with your share of difficulties, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.a4 In the a rmy, no sold ier gets himself mixed up in c ivil ian l ife, because he must 4:8be at the disposal of the man who enlis te d him; ' o r take an ath lete-h e cannot 1 Co 9:25+win any crown unless he has kept all the ru les of the contest; -and again, it is

7 the work ing farme r who has the first claim on any crop that is harvested . Thinkove r wha t I have said, and the Lord will show you how to understand it all.Remember the Good News that I carry, 'Jesus Chris t r isen from the dead,9 sprung from the race of David'; -it is on acco un t of this that I have my ownhardships to bear, even to being cha ined like a criminal- but they cannot chai n10 up God's news. 'So I bear it all for the sake of those who are chosen, so thatin the end they may have the salva tion tha t is in Christ Jesus and the eternalglory that comes with it.

The struggle against the immediate danger from false teachers14 Remind them of th is; and tell them in the name of God:' that there is to beno wra ngling about words: all that this ever ach ieves is the destruction of t hose15 who arc listening. Do all you can to present yoursel f in front of God as a manwho has come th rough his trial s, and a man who has no cause to be ashamedof his life's work and has kept a straight course wi th the message of the truth.16 Have noth ing to do with point less philosop hical discussions- they only lead17 further and furt her awa y from true religion . -Talk of this kind corrodes likegangrene, as in the case 01' Hymenaeus and Philetus, - the men who have goneright away from the tr uth and cla im that the resurrect ion ha s al read y takenplace." Some people's faith ca nnot sta nd up to them .

19 However, God 's solid foundation stone is still in position, and this is theinscription on it: 'The Lo rd knows those who {I re his 0 11'1' and 'All who cal l onthe I{{JIIle of'the Lord must avoid sin'. '

20 Not all the dishes in a lar ge house are made of gold and silver ; some aremade of wood or ea rthenware: some are kept for special occasions and others2 1 are for ordinary purposes. Now, to avoid these faults that I am speaking aboutis the way for anyone to become a vessel for speci al occasions, fit for the Masterhimself to usc. and kept ready for any good work.

22 Ins tead of giving in to your impulses like a young man , fasten your attentionon holiness, faith , love and peace, in unio n with all tho se who call on the Lor d23 with pure minds. Av o id these futil e and silly speculations, unders tanding tha t24 they on ly give rise to quarrel s ; -a nd a servant of the Lord is no t toengage in quarrel s, but has to be kind to everyone, a good teach er, and patient.

12Greeting and thanksgiving1From Paul , appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus in his designto promise l ife in Chr is t Jesu s; - to Timothy, dear chi ld of mine, wishing yougrace, mercy and peace from God the Fa t he r and from ChristJ esus our Lord .Night and day I thank God, keeping my consci ence clear and rememberingmy duty to him as my ancestors did , a nd always I remember yo u in my prayers;1 remember you r tears" -a nd lo ng to see you aga in to complete my happ iness. 4Then I am reminded of the sincere fait h which you have ; it came first to live in 5your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eun ice, and I have no doubt that itis the same faith in you as wel l.

The gifts that Timothy has receivedThat is why 1 am reminding you now to fan into a flame the gift that God 6gave you when I laid my hands on you. -G od's gift was not a sp irit o f t im idity, 7but the Spi ri t of power, and love, and self-control. 'So you are never to bea sh amed of witnessing to the Lord , or ashamed of me for being his prisoner ;but with me, bear the hardships for the sakeof the Good News, relying o n thepower of God -wh o has saved us and called us to be holy "-n ot becau se ofanything we ourselves have done but for his own purpose and b) his own grace .

This grace had a lready been granted to us, in Christ Jesus, before the beginningT,R2:1 ltn of time, -but it has on ly been revea led by the Appear ing" of our saviour Chr ist 10

f i , ~ i Jes us. He abo lished deat h, and he has proclaimed l ife and immortality through) Tm 2:7 the Good News; -and 1 have been named its herald, its apostle and its teacher." II

It is on ly on a ccount of this tha t I am experiencing fresh hardships here 12now; ' but 1 have not lo st co nfidence , because I know who it is that I have putmy tr ust in, and I have no doub t a t all that he is ab le to t ak e car e of all thatI have entrusted to him! un t il tha t Day.Keep as yo ur pattern the sound teac hing you have hea rd from me, in the 13fait h and love that are in Christ Jesus. You have been trusted to look after 14something precious; guard it with the help of the Ho ly Spirit who lives in us.As you know, Phygelus and Hermogenes and all the others from Asia refuse 15to have anyth ing more to do with me. 1 hope the Lord will be kind to all the 16family of Onesiphorus, because he has often been a comfort to me and has neverbeen ashamed of my cha ins. ' On the contrary, as soon as he reached Rome, he 17really searc hed hard for me and f ou nd out where I was . May it be the Lord's 18will that he shall find the Lord 's mercy on that Day ." You know better thananyone else how muc h he h elp ed me at Ephesus.

    How Timothy should face hardships

2 Accept the stre ngth, my dear son, that comes from the grace of Christ Jesus. IYou have hea rd eve ry thing that I teac h in public; ha nd it on to reliablepeopl e so tha t they in turn will be able to teach others.

He has to be gentle when he cor rects peop le who disp ute what he says, never 25forgett ing that God may give them a change of mind so that they recognise thetruth and -corne to the ir senses, once out of the trap where the devil caught 26them and kept them enslaved.

Paul in the evening of his lifeAs for me, my l ife is already be ing poured away as a libation," and the timehas come for me to be gone. -I have fought the good fight to the end; T have run 7the race to the finish; I ha ve kept the faith ; -all there is to come now is the 8crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that Day : an d not only to me but to al l tho se who have longed

    for his Appearing.

    366T IMOTHY:2 5

The dangers of the last days3 You may be quite sure that in the last days there are go ing to besome difficult times. - People will be self-centred and grasping; boastful, 2arrogant and rude; disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious; -heartlessand unappeasable; they will be slanderers, profligates, savages and enem ies ofeverything tha t i s good ; - they wil l be treacherous and reckless and demented 4by pride, preferring their own pleasure to God. -They will keep up the outward 5appearance of religion but will have rejected the inner power of it. a Have nothingto do with peop le like that.Of the same kind, tor), are those men who ins inuate themselves into families 6in order to get influence ove r silly women who a re obsessed with their sins andfollow one craze after another -in the attempt to educate themselves, but cannever come to knowledge of the t ru th . -Men like th is defy the t ruth just as

Jan nes and Ja rnbres defied Moses:" t he ir m inds are corrupt and thei r faithspurious. -But they will not be ab le to go on any longer: their foolish ness, likethat of theo ther two, must become obvious to everybody. You know, though, what 1 have taught, how I have lived, what I have a imed 10at; you Know my faith , my pat ience and my love ; my constancy -and the I Ipersecutions and hardships that came to me in places like Antioch, lconium andLystra - a ll the persecutions 1 have endured ; and the Lord has rescued me fromevery o ne of them. -You are well aware, then, t ha t a nybody who tries to live 12in devotion to Ch ri st is c er ta in to be attacked; -while these wicked impostors 13will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and deceived themselves. You must keep to wha t you have been taug ht an d know to be tr ue; remember 14who your teac hers were,' -and how, ever since you were a chi ld, you have known 15the holy scriptures- f rom these you can learn the wisdom tha t leads to salvationthrough fai th in Chris t Jesus. -A ll scripture is inspired by God and cans profit- 16ab ly be used for teac hing, for refuting error, for guiding people's l ives andteachi ng them to he holy. -T his is how the man who is ded icated to God 17becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.A solemn charge4 Before God and before Christ Jesus who is to be j ud ge of the living and the Idead , I put this du ty to you, in the name of his Appearing and of his kingdom:proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on i t. Refute falsehood, 2correct error, call 10 obedience- but do a ll wit h patience and with the intentionof teaching. -T hc time is su re to come when, far from being content with soundleaching, people will be avid for the latest novelty and co llect themselves a wholeseries of teachers according to the ir own tas tes ; -an d then, instead of listening 4to the truth, they will turn to myths . -Be careful always to choose the rightcou r se; be brave under trials; make the preaching of the Go od News your life'swork , in thoroughgoing service.
