Eleven Men Offer Insights Into Male Experience In Marked Men
Marked Men in a Line: Sherman Morrison, Damien Licata, Dan Patterson, and Scott Aronowitz.
Kim Dupuis, founding artistic director of The Edge Ensemble Theatre Company, had an idea for The Edge’s 2018 season. In Talking With..., which The Edge performed recently, 11 strikingly individualistic women offered their perspectives on life. Dupuis’ idea was to use Talking With... as a model; 11 men would offer insights into the male experience across a wide spectrum of age and lifestyle in 11 monologues.
Dupuis decided the men would write and perform their own monologues. She started recruiting men who would be both playwrights and actors. The project was designed to be collaborative, and since last August, Dupuis has been meeting with each of the playwright/actors to develop their scripts. The result is Marked Men, The Edge’s third show of the season.
Not all of the 11 actors wrote their own plays. Seven have, while four are performing monologues written by someone else. Dan Patterson is performing his own monologue – Ground Zero – and also wrote two other pieces – Personas, performed by Ian Hefele, and Holes, acted by Andrew Bosworth. Walter Lowe agreed to write one monologue, Walnut, which will be performed by Wolf Elkan. Writing and performing their own pieces are Sherman Morrison with Gates; Damien Licata with Legacy; Jim Duffy with Habitual Offender; Tom Bernstock with Bernie Greene; Scott Aronowitz with Activist; and Bill Hickok with Cowboy. Scot Tolman wrote the final monologue which acts as a unifier of the others pieces; this monologue, Hands, will be performed by Kenon Veno.
Dupuis has found the experience of working with these talented men exhilarating. The short mono-logues are touching, bizarre, intense, and comical perspectives of the male experience.
The Edge’s production will take place in Delega-tion Hall, the renovated site of the former Cheshire County Courthouse. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on May 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, and 19th and at 4 p.m. on May 13th and 20th. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors.
