Adarsh Society

Introduction

•Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society which was setup in the year 1999 belongs to the Maharashtra government.

•Army had been in possession of the 6,490-sq mt prime land in the posh area of Colaba in South Mumbai for over 60 years.

•the society, was originally meant to be a six-storey structure to house Kargil war heroes and war widows, was converted into a 100-metre-tall building.

• It was built subject to the condition that it would house war veterans but now it’s 103 members include the relatives of politicians and army officials.

When was the scam revealed

•The 104 apartment Society got involved in a controversy after the Navy had raised concerns over security as the building over-looked important military installations.

• It was IBN7’s special investigative report which exposed the corruption within the government and the bureaucrats.

•On November 10, 2010: Living up to its motto of ‘Khabar Har Keemat Par’, IBN7, exposed the most sensational controversy the ADARSH SCAM

Impact of Adarsh society on

common people•Hutments were demolished.

•Hawkers were drived away.

•Encroachments were removed of the poor people

Unethical Practices In Adarsh Scam

•Originally a 6 storey building was supposed to be made but instead a 31 storey building was constructed.

•Cost of the flats was 60-85 lakhs but they were sold out for 6-8 crores.

•the society also violates the stringent Mumbai Coastal Regulation Zone norms.

•Civilians, retired defence & government employees are not eligible for membership in societies like Adarsh which are allotted land by government.

•There are many benami flats.•40 membersof the Society who have

flats in their names have declared their income to be less than Rs 12,500per month.

Army’s action on Adarsh scam

•The CBI is already investigating how the prime land in Mumbai, which was marked for Kargil war widows and war veterans, was given to VIPs instead.

•Soon after the Adarsh land scam in which defence land was hand over to a housing society by officials who also flats in the building, Defence minister AK Antony has announced a massive audit exercise to check defence land utilization.

•Army began its own probe into the controversial allotment of flats (of Adarsh society) to it’s

retired and serving officers. •The Army, also sought legal opinion on

setting up a Court of Inquiry into the issue and also issued orders for the same.

•The Army probe focused on the role of some 40 officers.

•Brihan-Mumbai Electric Supply & Undertaking has disconnected power supply to the society.

•Builders community not entertained in most government departments

•  Projects worth crores of rupees were heldup

•  Small and large housing projects in the public-private sector have also been delayed with permissions

After the scam was revealed

•Delays in these projects have created panic among the builders who have made investments 

•Not a single file put up by builders seeking various concessions was cleared.
