Classic Marque is the official

The opinions and views expressed in

published articles are wholly those of

the respective authors, and are not

Club Torque The President’s Rap I would like to wish all members a happy and healthy new year.

A number of very successful register events have already been held this year. Well done to the organisers of these activities.

It is great to see the broad support and participation of members in our events and activities.

Club members are also very active in other motoring events such as All British Day and various Coffee & Cars type activities.

All British Day is Sunday 10th February (weather permitting).

Don’t forget to register for the 50th National Rally at Albury/Wodonga end of March/early April 2019. I expect a good number of South Australian members will attend with a healthy number also attending in WA in 2020 (we need to plan early). We had great

support from interstate for our recent hosting of the National Rally.

The promotion of the Jaguar & Daimler Marque from our club is very strong.

Within the club there are a number of great restoration projects underway and I look forward to seeing these vehicles back on the road soon. It is great to see the support between club members in restoring and keeping our vehicles safely running.

It is also pleasing to see the successful promotion and publicity about new Jaguars too.

Within the club we have been working on improving our record keeping and management processes with a better data base.

This should be more streamlined for members, be more accurate, and

reduce the load for our volunteer committee members. Ordering club regalia online has already been successfully implemented.

At our March general meeting we intend to present an update and provide some tuition on the online processes including membership renewal.

Please come along and see what we are trying to do in supporting our members.

Happy & Safe Motoring in 2019.

Club Torque Editor’s Column Welcome back to Classic Marque for 2019! It’s good to be back in the chair and I’d like to thank former editor and current V.P. Phil Prior for ‘Phil-ling’ in for me while I was absent on work duties. This edition has a couple of great stories, including a feature on the death of Jaguar Le Mans and F1 driver Mike Hawthorn 60 years ago.

Catch up with what’s been happening over the summer holiday break with reports from the Multivalve and XJ Registers, including some great pictures from the famous XJ Christmas dinner at the Cruising Yacht Club. Phil Prior educates us on “hydrographics” - an alternative method of wood veneer restoration that has produced some incredible results for

Phil’s XJC restoration. You can learn more on page 12. All this and more in the February issue of Classic Marque; I hope you enjoy it. Happy motoring,

Dane

BREXIT CHAOS JLR PRODUCTION STAND-DOWN, STOCKPILING PARTS

Kyle Hyatt RoadShow with Dane Wilden Classic Marque Jaguar Land Rover, alongside the rest of the British auto industry, has been in borderline panic mode with Brexit looming, and now it's looking like the iconic British marques will idle four factories for an additional week or more in April, according to a report published Sunday by Motor1. Jaguar Land Rover currently operates vehicle production facilities in Solihull, Castle Bromwich and Halewood and an engine assembly plant in Wolverhampton which it typically shuts down for a week in April. This year that stoppage will be extended by at least a week. Only its UK factories will be affected by the shutdown, but it's still a significant bump in the road for the car maker. A series of emergency Brexit measures – including stockpiling and bringing forward temporary factory closures – are expected to impose extra costs on a highly competitive industry. For instance, Jaguar Land Rover, which owns multiple sites in the West Midlands, is stockpiling parts and Honda plans to halt production at its Swindon plant for six days after Brexit day on

29 March. Other British automakers have resorted to drastic measures as well. Aston Martin has already enacted its No-Deal Brexit contingency plan while German-owned Bentley and Rolls-R o yc e a r e r e p o r t e d l y considering moving production from the UK to continental Europe if things go totally pear-shaped. Lotus is newly flush with cash, courtesy of its primary investor Geely, but considering Lotus’ financial history, coupled with low yearly sales, a great deal of discomfit is rumoured to be growing in Norwich.

Jaguar Land Rover didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Ed. UPDATE: Jaguar Land Rover released the following statement on January 24; “Today we have confirmed this year's holiday dates to employees across all sites. As part of this, we have also confirmed that there will be an additional week of production stand-down 8th - 12th April due to potential Brexit disruption.”

Above: Staff at Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood site. Uncertainty regarding the UK’s plan to exit the European Union has British carmakers nervous; reports indicate that JLR have already begun stockpiling parts in case of a trade shut down.

The Guardian newspaper analyses the potential effects of a “no

-deal” Brexit policy and discusses carmakers’ contingency

plans to avoid a supply disaster.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

Calum Brown Auto Classics John Michael ‘Mike’ Hawthorn shot to fame as the first British Formula 1 world champion back in 1958, clinching the title after a difficult racing season fraught with mechanical problems and infighting with Italian team-mate Luigi Musso. Hawthorn instantly announced his retirement from motorsport, badly marred by the deaths of Ferrari team-mate and close friend Peter Collins during the 1958 German Grand Prix and Stewart Lewis-Evans at the '58 Moroccan GP. Known for wearing a bow tie when behind the wheel and epitomising all elements of the gentleman racer’s cultural stereotype, Hawthorn was killed 60 years ago last month, crashing his comprehensively-modified 1958 Jaguar saloon at high speed on Friday January 22, 1959. Having left a National Sporting Club dinner held in his honour only 60 hours before, Hawthorn lost control of his 3.4-litre Jaguar MkI while driving on the A3 road near Guildford and perished in the resulting impact. Colliding with a Bedford truck b e f o r e m o u n t i n g a n embankment and broadsiding a roadside tree, the reigning World Champion – aged only 29 – suffered fatal head injuries and was propelled onto the rear seats. The force of contact was severe enough to uproot the tree almost entirely. The crash occurred on a

notoriously treacherous section of road already responsible for 15 accidents and two fatalities in the previous two years alone, although various theories have been put forward since the accident in regards to reason. Overtaking in wet conditions, witnesses cla imed that Hawthorn passed a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing travelling in excess of 80mph. As it turned out, the Benz was driven by acquaintance and race team manager Rob Walker. On entering a right-hand corner after overtaking the Mercedes, Hawthorn’s Jaguar clipped a b o l l a r d d i v i d i n g t w o carriageways and spun out of cont ro l . The inevi tab le speculation found media powerhouses broadcasting a consensus that the pair had been racing each other.

This notion was fuelled further by Walker’s persistent refusal to estimate his speed at the time by a coroner’s inquest. The inquest returned a verdict of accidental death on January 26. Many years later, further information from Walker came to light. During an interview in 1988, Walker confirmed that he and Hawthorn had been racing, but had been advised by investigative police officers to make no mention of this, or else he would incriminate himself. Although mechanical failure was alluded to, an examination of the wreck found no obvious culpability on Jaguar’s behalf. Mike had been associated with Jaguar for some time, owning at least one XK120 before racing for the marque at Le Mans. Sir William Lyons – Jaguar’s co-founder – loaned him the 3.4-

litre MkI during his tenure for the company. Upon Hawthorn’s retirement, he was permitted to continue using it thereafter. The 806th right-hand drive 3.4 saloon produced, Jaguar has no record of alteration in the chassis record book, indicating that the car’s modifications were most likely undertaken without Jaguar’s approval. A further belief is that Mike was suffering from blackouts, perhaps due to kidney failure. He had already lost a kidney to infection in 1955 and evidence from the time suggests he started to suffer problems with the other. He was expected to live only three years beyond his F1 title win. Although his death occurred a mere three months after retiring from public life, Hawthorn’s legacy – possibly enhanced by his tragic early death – continues to flourish with contemporary F1 events. The Hawthorn Memorial Trophy has been awarded to the year’s most successful British or Commonwealth F1 driver since 1959. There is also a statue at G o o d wo o d C i r c u i t t h a t commemorates Hawthorn’s achievement as the UK’s first F1 world champion.

Multivalve Register’s Australia Day Lunch A big thank-you to Bill Browne and Margaret Piper for hosting the Multivalve Register Australia Day barbecue at their home on Hindmarsh Island – a great time was had by all, good food and good company! The next meeting of the Register will be on Tuesday 26th March at the Cremorne Hotel on Unley Road. In view of the potential noise in the hotel after 7.00pm the meeting will begin at 6:00pm followed by dinner for those who wish to eat. Judy Langdon confirmed that the run to Renmark over the October long weekend is a non-starter as all accommodation is booked out for two weddings. It was agreed to try for the weekend after Labour Day. Happy New Year to all members of the Club!

Next was a terrific little run up through the Barossa on Sunday the 13th January, organised by Trevor Norley and Paul Moore. 65 people attended. The Caltex at Bolivar has never had so many Jaguars in at the one time. It looked fabulous. We took off and headed to a small hide a way of absolutely fabulous 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s memorabilia (unfortunately we could remember just about all of it!). It is called Lori’s Diner just out of Nuriootpa. It is well worth the visit and the morning tea was one of the best we can remember in a long time. We then drove through the back hills of the Barossa before turning up to the Lord Lyndoch Restaurant for lunch. Here’s a word of warning – if you have to go out that evening for dinner – don’t have lunch at the Lord Lyndoch first. The meals and the staff are to be congratulated and it is definitely one to put into your little black book. Thanks again to Trevor and Paul.

The following Sunday was our annual Breakfast at the Birkenhead Tavern. We had 51 people show up for this very pleasant Sunday morning and is starting to become an excellent way to kick of the start to the Jaguar Year.

Looking forward to catching up with you all on the 5th of February at the Police Club.
