6 Tips for Choosing the Right Sunscreen

Sun protection is possible if you choose the right sunscreen in the first place. Following are a few pointers on what you should look for in the product label before deciding to buy a sunscreen.

1. SPF - This is the sun protection factor of the sunscreen and indicates its effectiveness against sunburn. You definitely need at least an SPF 15 for everyday use, SPF 30 if you are outside for long hours, and SPF 50 for sensitive or thin-skinned areas or when you are at a very high altitude. But do not be swayed by a high SPF alone as the degree of protection is not proportionate to the number - SPF 100 does not indicate total sun protection!

2. Broad spectrum - SPF indicates the degree of protection from UVB rays only. What about the harmful UVA rays? You need to look for a product that contains chemicals like ecamsule, avobenzone, sulisobenzone, octocrylene, or oxybenzone or minerals like titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide. Alternatively, choose a broad spectrum sunscreen as it indicates protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Water resistant - If you plan to exercise, run or swim, you need a sunscreen that is water and sweat-resistant. While no sunscreen is completely waterproof, they can provide protection under water for 40 to 80 minutes. After that you need to reapply the sunscreen for continued protection.

4. Minerals - Most sunscreens available in the market are chemical-based. If you have sensitive skin or are allergic to chemicals, it is better to opt for a natural, mineral-based sunscreen. These are preferable for children (above 6 months) as well. However, keep in mind that a mineral sunscreen will be harder to apply and may leave a white sheen on the skin.

5. Skin type - The sunscreen should suit your skin type as well. People with oily or acne-prone skin should stick to water-based sunscreens or moisturizers. Sensitive skin demands mineral-based sunscreens.

6. Expiry - No matter how expensive or effective the sunscreen, it will lose its efficiency if used beyond the expiry date.
