A phobia is an abnormal fear of a specific thing or situation which presents no real threat to you. You may even know that your fear is exaggerated. But the terror you feel is so real, that you’ll do anything to escape it! Such a situation disrupts a per- son’s life and upsets social and professional well-being; it affects mental health, and wrecks your lifestyle. Phobias are usually of three types: Specific phobia is the dread of a specific object or sit- uation. It could be a fear of heights, fear of closed spaces or of a particular animal or insect, say a spider. Social phobia is fear of being neg- atively assessed by people. Agoraphobia is a fear of being caught in an everyday place/ situation from which escape is not possible such as in a crowd. Symptoms: These appear only when the person comes in con- tact with the feared object or an- ticipates such a contact. In- creased heart rate, muscular tension, sweating, giddiness, trembling, weakness, nausea, low self-esteem, excessive fear, loss of self-control, shame and negative thoughts manifest. Causes: An unpleasant experi- ence or observation can cause a phobia. Anybody can develop a phobia at any point. For example, if you are trapped in a lift or come across somebody who had a bad experience, then you may start fearing lifts. Phobic people exhibit negative mindsets characterized by ex- cessive vigilance and an obses- sive focus on the object of the fear. Deep-seated unconscious con- flicts, of which a person may not even be aware, can also manifest as phobia. Treatment: Phobia is a treat- able psychological disorder. Vic- tims of phobia often suffer in si- lence as they are ashamed to get help. Don’t dismiss or ridicule their concerns. Show empathy and support instead. Counsellors use psychoanalytic therapy to build your confidence. Insight-oriented psychodynamic therapy helps the person to un- derstand unconscious causes of the phobia. Behaviour therapy encourages the phobic individual to slowly overcome anxiety through relaxation techniques. Cognitive therapy helps to con- front unrealistic fears. Are you a victim of phobias? Do you have an irrational fear of a situation or object? Is it making life miserable? If yes, then you could be suffering from a phobia, says clinical psychologist Pulkit Sharma (Send in your feedback to st.wellness@ timesgroup.com) _________________

New Delhi: Stating that di-versity has defined our civi-lization, Union ministerJai-ram Ramesh said A KRamanujan’s essay on Ra-mayana is an example of ourdiversity. “Diversity has de-fined our civilization. The Ra-mayana essay by Ramanujanis a case in point, where unitydoes not mean uniformity.People can have differentviews yet can be united.” Theminister also spoke on the ur-gency for a public policy inpromoting livelihood ratherthan protecting livelihood atthe public lecture on HumanSecurity and Livelihoods inSouth Asia in Lady Shri RamCollege on Thursday.

LSR is hosting noted econ-omists, researchers, activistsand students of different dis-ciplines from South Asiancountries in a first of its kindAutumn School. In associ-ation with Heinrich BollFoundation, the autumn

school 2011 will examine thecauses of the recent finance-led global crises and its impli-cations on peoples’ rights andhuman security. The deliber-ations will also focus on thestatus of women in SouthAsia— a region that suffersfrom severe poverty and starkgender inequities. The pro-gramme will culminate witha public lecture of challengesof globalization.

Speaking on the core is-sue of livelihood, Rameshsaid unlike the perception ofurbanization being a threat,it is rather an opportunity.“People will migrate and ur-banization is inevitable. Therefore, the governmentshould ensure eco-friendlyurbanization,” said Ramesh.

The minister also talkedabout the conflict in theMaoists affected districts.“What drives these conflictsis the increasing aspiration, pressure on natural re-sources and how we managethem,” added Ramesh.

New Delhi: The New DelhiMunicipal Council (NDMC)has demolished 60 shops at Su-jan Singh Park for encroach-ing upon government land.

Following the order of Su-preme Court appointed moni-toring committee, the civicagency had sealed these shopsin January this year ongrounds of property misuse. However, shop owners hadcarried illegal constructionoutside the shops, said NDMCofficials.

According to NDMC offi-cials, Thursday’s demolitionwas part of a routine drive. But sources say the action wasplanned only after the visit ofSC appointed monitoringcommittee members on Mon-day. “A majority of theseshops had encroached uponthe government land and car-ried out unauthorized con-struction. Around 60-70 auto-mobile repair shops weresealed in January this year.Despite the sealing, shop own-ers continued to operate. Wehave demolished sheds andunauthorized constructionoutside the shops,’’ said aNDMC official.

However, residents claimthat no commercial activityhas taken place in the area inthe last months. “This is just away to harass the residentsand shop owners. We havebeen living here since 1962, sowhy can’t we sit outside ourshops?” questioned OP Va-san, president of the market.

When contacted, a mem-ber of the monitoring com-mittee clarified the demoli-tion was not ordered by them.“We had just ordered actionagainst a shop in the areawhich was operating from aporta cabin. We will be sub-mitting our final report on en-croachment and propertymisuse in Sujan Singh Parkarea soon,” said a member ofthe monitoring committee.
