– Characterization-includes what a character says (dialogue), what a character does (actions), what a character thinks (interior monologue), what others say about a character, and through the author’s direct statement.

– Motivation-a reason that explains a character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, or behavior.

– Round character-a complex, fully-rounded personality; a three-dimensional character.

– Flat character-a character presented with only a single important trait.– Stock character-a flat character in a standard role with standard traits.– Dynamic character-a character that changes in response to the actions

through which he or she passes.– Static character-a character that changes little over the course of a

narrative/story. Things happen to these characters, but little happens in them.

– Foil-a character, usually minor, designed to highlight qualities of a major character.
