6 th Grade Earth and Space Science 1 st 9 weeks Scientific Method, Scientific Processes, Geologic Time, Science Fair 2 nd 9 weeks Plate Tectonics, Rock Cycle, Hydrosphere 3 rd 9 Weeks Weather, Atmosphere, Human Impact 4 th 9 Weeks Space Exploration, Solar System, Sun and Stars Curriculum Tests20% Quizzes20% Classwork 20% Homework10% Projects/Labs20% Bellwork10% Grading System Began this week in class At home project Parent letter sent home Monday (due Tuesday) The final project will be due end of November/early December Must do a model with Written report or Experiment Higher level Experiment preferred must do that for Science Fair Do not begin project yet! Students will get more guidelines and I have to approve the project before they can begin. ***Special Approval (all info on class website) Science Fair We have a lot of class discussion, pair work and lab group work. Group work is based on Kagan strategies. If students do not participate appropriately, they will be sent to the solo seat and given a behavior contract. Rewards: Extra Credit Tickets, Review Games, Class Activities, ROAR bucks Consequences: Behavior Contracts / Tracking Forms Warning (Verbal or Non-verbal) Parent Communication Lunch Detention (with possible parent communication) Morning Detention (with parent contact) Referral to Discipline *If you wish to schedule a conference, please contact the front office. Classroom Management Makeup work number of days absent plus one Class Materials Keep an Organized Binder with Textbook Chapters in page protectors Late Work You lose points for late assignments at least 15 points for each day late. I will not accept assignments more than a week late. Deadlines will become more strict as the year progresses. Bellwork starts as soon as the bell rings. Students first must write down their homework. Then they must complete the bellwork activity or question on the board. Planner students need to write in their planner daily. Their homework is on the board and the class website EVERY day. You should check their planner occasionally to make sure they are writing their homework every day. I try to check also. Class Policies Ask for help if they need it! There can be complex concepts in Science I am here to help them. Students who came to see me for extra help did really well on the test. They can arrange a time before or after school. I also make lunch appointments if necessary. Stay organized! Keep all papers together in chronological order and use planner Turn in and Make up ALL Assignments (there should be no zeros!) Review notes/classwork daily so that you keep up with the material then you can ask questions the next day in class Be prepared Come to class ready to work, immediately begin bellwork, have all materials out, be ready to learn Successful Students There are weekly extra credit opportunities. They are due every Friday and the points are added to the lowest assignment grades. The activities are found on the class website.
