There are literally tens ofthousands of applications designed forcomputers that fit in the hand and support awide range of tasks from social networking tooffice productivity. The rise of the touchinterface on the mobile device is also making a

huge impact on mobiles.

There has been tremendous growth in thenumber and variety of educational appsavailable. However, even with thedemonstrated power of mobile computing and

mass acceptance of it as a platform their usein schools is still constricted by policy.




Impact on Test Preparation

A sixth grade teacher in Idaho usesiPods to enhance lessons with video

clips, homework assignments, quizzes,videos, music, books on tape and more

in English, math, social studies, andreading.

According to Forrester Research theuse of the iPod helped his students

achieve some of the highest IdahoState Achievement Test scores in thestate: 100 in reading, 95 in math and

95 in language arts.

Game-based learning includes a wide array ofgames from simple paper and pencil puzzles(non-digital games) to solo digital games suchas the Nintendo Wii to immersive worlds suchas World of Warcraft or SecondLife whichcould be categorized as collaborative digitalgames.

Now that digital games have been around forover 20 years creators have recognized theaspects of them that are appealing as well asengaging and educational content is beingembedded into games designed for specificlearning outcomes for the individual as well asfor completing complex, collaborative goals.

Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) have also become popular. TheTower of Babel was a successful European ARG that was used byschools and learners of all ages to learn new languages.




Open Ended Collaborative Games

While SecondLife is a marquis example of everything wrong with massivelymulti-player online (MMO) games for education because of lack of controls, theapproach to learning has been used successfully and will be a popular choicefor learning open-ended collaboration and group problem solving skills.

Inbound marketing is a marketing strategy that focuseson getting found by customers using blogs, searchengines and social media.

In traditional marketing (outbound marketing) companiesfocus on finding customers by using techniques that arepoorly targeted and that interrupt people. Examples arecold-calling, print advertising, T.V. advertising, junk mail,spam and trade shows.

The process of interrupting people and driving one’smessage into a crowd over and over like a sledgehammer via traditional marketing is expensive and notvery effective and is slowly being replaced by inboundmarketing that focuses on creating useful content thatcustomers are looking for and helps generate demand.
