Welcome to YAM Session, the annual international event for creative professionals working in the field of young audiences development. Whether you are a musician, a programmer, a producer, a booker, an educator or an organiser, there is something for everyone and we hope that you’ll use this time to get to know each other and the many great productions on showcase. This year’s YAM Session takes place in Umeå, Sweden from the 6-8 November and includes 20 live showcases from around Scandinavia, a dynamic YAM Producers Forum and a wide range of thought provoking presentations and discussions from international guest speakers. Delegates shall also have the opportunity to enjoy the 2014 YAMA Awards Ceremony, where the word’s best music productions for young audiences will be crowned.

YAM Session är ett årligt internationellt evenemang för kreatörer som arbetar inom området ung publik. Oavsett om du är musiker, producent, pedagog eller arrangör, är detta en händelse som du inte vill missa!

Together with their parents, the babies sing along to well-known children’s songs, listen to the sweet strings and become one withe the music. Rhythm eggs, soft fabrics, pillows and dancing make the experience complete. The program consists of known motion songs and children’s songs interspersed with classical pieces by Brahms and Tchaikovsky. A nice moment for both children and parents.
Tillsammans med sina föräldrar får bäbisarna sjunga med i välkända barnvisor, lyssna till ljuva stråkar och vara mitt i musiken. Rytm-ägg, mjuka tyger, kuddar och dans gör upplevelsen komplett. Programmet består av kända rörelsesånger och barnvisor varvat med klassiska stycken av Brahms och Tjajkovskij. En mysig stund för både barn och föräldrar.
This Danish trio took the international Young Audiences Music Awards in 2013. It is high class musicality performed on nonconventional instruments like buckets and water basins, as well as the human body and piano. Involving the audience as a fourth musician, Body Rhythm Factory is a unique experience.
Den danska trion vann 2013 det internationella priset Young Audiences Music Awards. Deras högkvalitativa musik framförs på okonventionella instrument som hinkar och vatten såväl som på kroppen och piano. Med publiken som fjärde instrumentet blir Body Rhythm Factory en unik upplevelse att delta i.

BRIDGING THE GAP
Concert halls have several functions. They are places for concerts and other kinds of performances. They can be places for meetings, but they certainly can also be places for music education. This presentation will be about trends in music education and their implementation that could lead to wider involvement of young, and older audiences. Michel Hogenes is a lecturer of music education at the Faculty of Social Work & Education, and researcher in the research group Youth and Development of The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands.
Konsertsalar har flera funktioner. De är platser för konserter och andra typer av föreställningar. De kan vara rum för möten, men de kan också vara platser för musikundervisning. Denna presentation kommer att handla om trender inom musikpedagogik och deras genomförande som kan leda till ökad delaktighet av ung och äldre publik. Michel Hogenes är lektor i musikpedagogik vid fakulteten för socialt arbete och utbildning, och forskare vid yrkeshögskolan i Haag, Nederländerna.

In a dream, you are free to create anything. In reality, you have the same opportunity - only your creativity and imagination sets the limits. So what happens to a classical piece when it winds up in the hands of a jazz trio? Trio X of Sweden have worked with pieces like “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven or “Träumerei” by Schumann with their special flow of creativity.
I drömmen är du fri att skapa, det är endast din kreativitet och fantasi som sätter gränserna. Så vad händer med ett klassiskt musikstycke när den hamnar i händerna på en jazztrio? EXCLUSION/ UTANFÖRSKAPET
Exclusion revolves around Felix, who in his own words, says “I want to be like everyone else, but still I am myself, different is another word for special.” Exclusion is a burning issue since an understanding of individual differences often may be sidelined for a sometimes rectangular template that might not suit everyone.
Utanförskapet kretsar kring Felix som med egna ord säger ”Jag vill vara som alla andra, men jag är ändå mest mig själv, annorlunda är ett annat ord för speciell”.Utanförskapet är brännande aktuell då förståelse för individuella skillnader ofta får stå åt sidan för en ibland fyrkantig mall som kanske inte passar alla.

HIDE AND SEEK
Ensemble Yria gives a performance with a visual and groovy musical experience, made which fantasy and spirit. They are experimenting with the possibilities of water in different formes, as steam, ice and water. It’s an interactive performance with music, text and movement, polyphony, acoustic instruments and wet grooves.
Ensemble Yria förundras över vattnets skönhet och förödande kraft, och vattnets möjlighet att vara både i fast form, flytande och gas. De ger en interaktiv föreställning med musik, text och rörelse, med mångstämmig sång, akustiska instrument och blöta grooves. En visuell och svängig musikupplevelse som väcker fantasi, engagemang och eftertanke.
Hide & Seek is a music performance with songs and lyrics about identity, about finding out who you are, dramatized in the form of musical scenes. The music is arranged and performed by the vocal string quartet STRÅF, the show is produced in collaboration with director Svante Grogarn.
Hide & Seek är en musikföreställning som består av låtar och texter som har med identitet och vem man är att göra. Frågeställningar som att våga visa sig som den man verkligen är och ibland bara vilja gå och gömma sig, dramatiseras i föreställningen i form av musikaliska scener. Musiken har STRÅF själva arrangerat och föreställningen har gruppen skapat i samarbete med regissören Svante Grogarn.

HOW LONG WILL SHE BE DEAD?/ HUR LÄNGE SKA HON VARA DÖD?
High-Quality Recordings for Young Audiences is a two-year project with support from the Swedish Arts Council. The aim is for children’s music to achieve the same status as children’s literature, and for young audiences to have greater access to recorded music of the highest quality.
Högkvalitativa inspelningar för barn och unga är ett tvåårigt projekt där det kraftsamlas kring högkvalitativa inspelningar för barn och unga. Förhoppningen är att musik för barn ska få samma status som barnlitteratur och att barn och unga ska få större tillgång till inspelad musik av hög kvalitet.
Mozart’s much-loved Requiem has been adapted by a Klezmer quartet with southern Sweden’s foremost musicians in the field. This exciting meeting with Mozart brings out an unanticipated playful side of the music. Together with professional singers in Ensemble SYD and newly composed lyrics, “How Long Will She Be Dead?” aims to stimulate a beautiful, poetic and intimate dialogue on the greatest of life’s questions.
Mozarts kända och älskade Requiem har omarbetats av en klezmerkvartett med södra Sveriges främsta musiker på området. När de stämmer träff med Mozart blir det ett spännande möte som lyfter fram oanat lekfulla sidor i musiken. Tillsammans med professionella sångare i Ensemble SYD och nyskrivna sångtexter vill Hur länge ska hon vara död? inleda ett vackert, poetiskt och intimt samtal om svåra frågor.

A short lecture/workshop about how toddlers create, explore and experience sound. Children of the age of 0-2 years have another world of sounds than older children and adults. They create sound in order to communicate with others and explore the world they live in.

Det är t ex trist att vuxna inte alltid har tid att lyssna är pinsamma eller avbryter mitt i en lek. When arts integration takes place, which are the challenges and the outputs? Can the arts speak with and to academic subjects? If we say yes to this marriage, how and why can / should this relationship work? Take a journey into and out of metaphors for optimal learning.
När konstintegration äger rum, vilka är utmaningarna respektive möjligheterna? Kan konsten tala med och till akademiska ämnen? I så fall; hur och varför fungerar detta förhållande? En resa in i och ut ur metaforer för optimal inlärning. Tatiana Chemi är docent i Utbildnings-och organisatorisk innovation vid institutionen för lärande och filosofi vid Universitetet i Aalborg, där hon också är regissör och en av grundarna av forskargruppen Ariel (Lärarexamen och lärande).
Classical music performed by four clowns on stage. A constellation that we may not be accustomed to, but they give an extraordinary concert! The question being asked is: what is normal? Long Live the Loonies is a new inspiring music dramatical work. It’s a struggle of the odd against the stereotypical, in order to find the tension in opposites.
Den här konsertföreställningen ställer frågan; vad är normalt? De slår ett välförtjänt slag för att udda också är vackert! Stå på dig, vem du än är! Här stångas udda mot stereotyper för att hitta spänning i motsatser. Clownen roar och oroar, men egentligen har den aldrig för avsikt att vara rolig. Clownen är en uppriktig figur vars öppna, mänskliga förhållningssätt ibland gör att vi uppfattar hen som rolig.

Alf Gabrielsson is one of Sweden’s most well known musicologists and has attracted international attention for his book Strong Experiences with Music – Music is Much More than Just Music.The book contains 1,300 different accounts of powerful musical experiences, collected in a research project unique to Gabrielsson in the whole world.
Alf Gabrielsson är en av Sveriges mest kända musikforskare och blev internationellt uppmärksammad för boken Starka musikupplevelser – musik är mycket mer än bara musik. Lamine Cissokho gives us a lovely introduction to the West African village where his story began. The music is strong with roots from the 1400’s and in constant change Playing djembe and kora, we hear of his upbringing in a griot family. In the program, he meets Camerata musician Géza Polony resulting in a seamless Swedish-Hungarian-Senegalese fusion.
Lamine Cissokho ger med bildspel och koramusik en härlig introduktion från den västafrikanska by där hans historia börjar. Musiken är stark med rötter från 1400-talet och i ständig förändring. Lamine sjunger, spelar djembe och kora, och vi får höra om hans uppväxt i en griot-familj. How do children react when they get to hear a truly great soloist? Marimba virtuoso Johan Bridger won the prestigious Soloist Prize in 2004 and has since toured the world. He meets a young audience together with a musician highly experienced in working with children, Anna-Carin Fogelqvist, in a performance that brings together a great soloist, his music and stories of fear, joy, sorrow, anger and love.
Vad händer i barnen när de får höra en riktigt stor solist? Marimbavirtuosen Johan Bridger vann Solistpriset 2004 och har sedan dess turnerat världen över. Här möter han barnpubliken tillsammans med den rutinerade barnmusikartisten Anna-Carin Fogelqvist i en föreställning som förenar mötet med en stor solist, hans musik och instrument, med berättelser om rädsla, glädje, sorg, ilska och kärlek.

Tronco Flamenco is an interactive flamenco performance combining dance, music, song, animation and storytelling. Through an innovative approach, animated interpretations of the paintings of the Swedish artist John Bauer and the poetry of Federico García Lorca connect the essence of the flamenco with nature.

THE WORLD’S MOST RELAX-ING MUSIC?/ VÄRLDENS MEST AVSLAPPNANDE LÅT?
Musik i Syd’s Anna-Carin Fogelqvist was planning to record a CD of the concert Solisten! when a story appeared in the press about “The World’s Most Relaxing Music”. A group of researchers at Mindlab (Britain) reached the conclusion that it was Marconi Union’s song Weightless. Tobias Broström’s assignment was to compose an eight-minute piece based on the same principles as Weightless. Could this piece is now the world’s most relaxing music? Judge for yourselves!
Musik i Syd, Utveckling Barn & Ungas projektledare Anna-Carin Fogelqvist höll som bäst på att planera skivinspelningen av föreställningen Solisten! då notisen om ”Världens mest avslappnande låt” dök upp i medier. Ett gäng forskare vid det brittiska företaget Mindlab hade utifrån en studie kommit fram till att det var Marconi Unions låt Weightless. Den hyllade kompositören Tobias Broström fick en litet annorlunda förfrågan. Broströms uppdrag gick ut på att komponera ett åtta minuter långt musikstycke, utifrån samma principer som Weightless. A hommage to the vaudeville acts of the early 19 hundreds, at this variety show you will meet the primadonna Nana, Jean the magician and Hepp Starz the brothers. Needless to say there is a lot of music in the show, written by their Variety manager, Pierre Dunsö himself, and performed by our Variety orchestra.
Varieté Varför Dé! En rätt rörande föreställning om ett litet varietésällskap som påstår sig ha turnerat världen runt och nu har dom beslutat sig för att ge sig ut på en turné i Sverige. Här får ni träffa Nana den undersköna, Jean den magiska, Bröderna Hepp Starz och sist men inte minst varietédirektören Pierre den musikaliska, som komponerat och satt samman denna unika varieté, i sin önskan att alla barn i världen ska få gå och se hans fantastiska varieté, utan att någon frågar - Varför dé?!

VIRTUAL ROOM/ VIRTUELLA RUM
Virtual Room is part of a project that aims to develop processing spaces for the young, beyond physical and geographical boundaries. It continues on from a composition lab where professional composers and young people met to create music together virtually as well as a series of virtual exhibitions. In this presentation we go in-depth into a case study that will take place this autumn.
Om att utveckla processrum - bortom fysiska och geografiska begränsningar för barn och unga. Det har bland annat genomförts kompositionslab där professionella kompositörer och unga har träffats och skapat musik tillsammans virtuellt. Syftet är att besökarna skulle kunna ta del av processerna bakom skapandet. David Westerlund`s trio has its origins in the The Royal College of music in Stockholm. The ensemble conveys the best game music in classical chamber music format and caters for both gamers and music lovers. Emotional songs and blazing piano solos alternate with warm cello tones in an entertaining performance.

Chat Perché is the work of several artistic and original approaches. A hundred percent opera in form and construction, influenced by melodrama, a musical form half way between spoken and sung. Caroline Gautier brought a team of creators together to enrich the show by intervention in each other’s domain. In this way, the choreographer added to the stage direction and the musical director intervened in the scenography. The girls are more dancers adept at contortions, the musicians play as actors, the dancers sing and recite and the singers dance. A multipurpose troupe.
“For how long will she be dead?” presents songs for children who lost someone close to them. This is a music performance about listening to and speaking clearly to children about difficult situations in life. It uses Mozart’s music that opens the emotions and senses in a therapeutic way, trying to understand the conflicting emotions that can be accommodated in a child. Based on a case report of the child psychologist Elisabeth Cleve, the show portrays the healing process of a girl whose mother died when she was very young.
H2hommes tells the story of a animated character moving through water like a mini-Odyssey cycle, disrupting the life of an inventor of flesh and bone. The poetry of his encounters with ice, clouds and rain will eventually brighten the dull daily of the inventor. Inspired by the theatre of objects, it gives life to the objects we use in our everyday life, discovering how to use them in a musical and different way. Kitchen cloths and windows full of water vapor turn into cinema screens to tell this dreamlike story, illuminated with car and bike’s headlights.
In Mile(s)tones, a percussionist, a pianist and a trumpet player guide you into the fascinating world of the legendary American jazz composer and trumpet player Miles Davis. His adventurous, innovative approach to music is the production’s starting point, leading you into a labyrinth of ever-changing spaces and moods. One moment you may find yourself in the vibrant creativity of a recording studio, or on stage as one of the musicians: the next moment, you’re creating a live soundtrack to a movie or you’re in the celebrated musician’s painting studio.

With highly original arrangements and compelling renditions of old Danish folk songs alongside their own exquisite material, Phonix has created a truly modern and distinct sound that is a unique blend of the past and the present. In the expert musical hands of Phonix, even 400 year old songs come across as equally fresh and relevant to the ears of a modern and young audience. During the concert, children will be activated with singing, clapping and dancing, as well as introduced to ancient Danish cultural roots.
In Prinsess Turandot, an actress, two opera singers and a ‘one-man-band’ take the young spectators on a trip to the world of classical composers like Lully, Mozart, Wagner, Bizet and Puccini. They tell a fair but fierce ancient Persian love tale about an ice princess who refuses to get married. Her admirers have a choice to make: either they solve the three riddles of the princess, or they get their head chopped off... Seated in a labyrinth in the middle of the performers, children experience the performance from very close-by.
In The Rhythm in You the rhythm is all around us. We often think of phenomena such as the rhythm of the traffic, the sea, the rhythm of the city and our own rhythm, that is, the one of a heartbeat, breathing, a constant pulse though fluctuating with our movement and mood. Swinging from happy to sad creates a certain rhythm, while our bodies sometimes just can’t stay still but they move in its own pace.
Is it possible that a violin talks to an accordion? Is it also possible that a violin is happy and an accordion is sad? Can an accordion flirt with a violin? The answers will be given in this wonderful concert directed to the kids, where the young audience will be able to meet Catharina Chen, the youngest orchestra leader ever in the National Opera & Ballet in Oslo, together with Frode Haltli, who plays the accordion and won the national championship 7 times! A delicious concert for the hearing and the kids!

The YAM Session Producers Forum is a three part live producing session where two international producers will meet, for the first time, to coproduce an up-and-coming young audiences production. The through this open process, the YAM Producers Forum opens a dialogue with the audience, exploring questions like “what makes a good production great?” and “how do we bring out the best in artists to help them to better connect thier art to young audiences?”. Always a unique expereince the YAM Session producers forum challenges artist, producer and audience ailke.
Jeanne Debost is an opera director, the artistic director of an opera company, and a cultural project manager. As artistic director of the Opéra.3 she constantly seeks new forms for operatic performances: the “minute opera, the “mixed opera,” “opera in new places” and “opera for young audiences” are a few examples of her extensive work.
Kraja is a vocal group from Umeå established in 2002, shortly before the Umeå Folk Music Festival. It consists of Linnea Nilsson, Eva Lestander, Lisa Lestander and Frida Johansson. They have specialized in singing without accompaniment and creates own arrangements of folk songs and hymns. Kraja is a sami word which means “the place you are longing for”.
Nina C. Dahl has worked as a producer for schoolconcerts in Norway/Rikskonsertenes skolekonserter since 2002 in various genres and formats. From solo projects to orchestral productions, and interdisciplinary projects. She has music education from the University of Trondheim and the University of Oslo.

YAM Session marks the official launch of the Blackboard Music Project (BbMP) which is an international development and exchange project aimed
at increasing the quality and quantity of concerts for Young Audiences around Europe.
The project is directed at strengthening international networks for Young
Audiences producers, organisers and experts; exchanging and educating producers, organisers and experts in the field who will share their expertise
and know-how and promoting/facilitating international exchange of young audiences concerts.
During the project period, 2 YAM Sessions and 6 Showcases distributed
among the partnering organisations will allow professionals to meet for the exchange of ideas and inspiration as well as exchange of
young audiences productions
All of the experience and information gained during the project will be assembled in a “Best Practice” digital toolkit with training videos, interviews
and more, which will be shared via the project’s dedicated website.
