Pro’S CORNERAlan Ehnes, Director of Golf
PRO TIP: Now that temperatures are falling, there are a few things to think about to keep your golf game sharp during the winter months.
First, as the temperature drops and the air get gets colder, your golf ball will not fly as far. The easiest way to compensate for this is to simply play a less lofted club. Secondly, switch to a softer golf ball. For example, if you play a Pro V1x switch to a regular Pro V1. The softer ball will allow you to compress it more easily, giving you more distance. Thirdly, give yourself more time before you play to stretch and warm up. It’s easy to pull a muscle in the cold weather, possibly preventing you from playing for several months. And finally, invest
in some good rain gear. Even if you
don’t anticipate playing golf in the
rain it is always good to have and it’s
some of the warmest outerwear you
will own. And just a final tip, keep a
hand warmer in your pocket to help
keep those hands warm.
TOURNAMENTS: The first
tournament of the year is scheduled
for Saturday, March 5th. The Junior/
Senior & Father/Son has become a
very popular golfing event and will
fill up quickly. It’s a 9:00am shotgun
start and the game is a 1 better ball of
partner. The cost per team is $30.00.
There will be an optional skin
game for teams wishing to add more
excitement to the day.
Currently we have not received the tournament schedule for NCGA tournaments. As soon as the schedule comes out I will send out an email letting all members know the selected dates for the Two man and Four ball qualifying.
In your February bill you should find a 2016 Fort Washington tournament calendar. If you do not have one in your statement please call the pro shop and we will get one out to you right away.
GREEN TALK: El Nino has shown up as forecasted. At the time of this writing Fort has had over 8 inches of rain and the forecast for February and March is calling for even more rain. This rain has already helped the course in diminishing very high salt levels thru out the golf course. We all have seen a lot of redwood trees on the golf course that are really struggling to survive due to high salt amounts caused by the four year drought. Other good things is the Bermuda grass in our fairways is starting to show some signs of coming out of dormancy. It’s an early and very positive sign that our fairways will be in great shape this spring. Thank you for helping keep your cart driving out of the fairways when the weather has been so wet. This really helps to get the fairways moving out of dormancy earlier. When the grass is coming out of winter dormancy it is very weak. We can help this delicate transition by not running carts over it through the winter months. Please have patience, fill in your divots, and repair your ball marks on greens so that everyone can enjoy the course the same way.

outdid himself (but as some say that is very easy).
This is not yesterday›s Senior Board - this is an aggressive and inventive group led by President Kurt Smith, Tournament Chair Mike Hurst and Treasurer Woody Alexander (representing my era), Irwin Nishimura, Bob Korsinen, and Peter Zeitler. The purpose of the meeting was to announce the forth coming 2016 schedule of Senior events - Senior Eleven Schedule: April 13 Copper River CC; April 15 Merced CC; May 13 San Joaquin CC; June 9 Kings River CC; July 12 Kings CC; August 2 Fort Washington; August 18 Belmont CC; September 1 River Island CC; September 20 Madera CC; October 11 Visalia CC and November 1 Sunnyside CC. (As Mel pointed out, there are 11 Country Clubs participating - thus the name Senior Eleven is easy to remember)
April 21 and 22 will be finest Senior event in the Central Valley our own Senior Invitational. Hurst etal are

shutdowns might suggest that the Seniors would be huddled down, in some worm environment over a Hennessy or two, reminiscing about events, courses played and past conquests. But that would not be the Fort Washington Seniors who decided that on a cold January night, a Saturday night at that, they would hold a formal dinner at our Fort, to announce their Plans for 2016. Many the naysayers who counseled caution as it might be a weak presentation to a less than concerned hibernating crowd. But low and behold, last Saturday night, January 23, brought out a banner crowd to a great evening. Lenny played his heart out, Rich Rodriquez knocked them dead with a his Master of Ceremonies chores (funny and emotional) and a special introduction to Fort Seniors past (1940s roots) presented by Tom Nast. The cocktails flowed and good cheer prevailed. By all accounts, Ali
working on «how can we possibly make this tournament better than last year». (They’ll find a way) Sign up early.
The first addition to the above schedule is April 26 - this will be a Bus Trip to the prestigious Seven Oaks Country Club in Bakersfield. An all inclusive and ideal bus trip. Then on May 3 the Seven Oaks Club travels to the Fort to sample our hospitality.
September 23 will be the annual kickoff of our Home and Home event with Del Rio CC.
Make sure you are signed up and a participating in your Senior Club - this will be our best year ever!

The Divot Doc New research suggests taking Vitamin D supplements can help women to significantly increase their muscle strength and reduce loss of muscle mass for at least 12 years after menopause. Women receiving the supplement had a 25% increase in muscle strength
compare to a 6.8% loss in the placebo group. Women not receiving the Vitamin D supplements were twice as likely to fall (this confirms previous research). I recommend at least 1000-2000 IU of D3 per day for all adults. Low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with osteoporosis,
heart disease and several cancers. Vitamin D is technically a hormone and not a vitamin, and one’s level can be easily checked with a blood test. (Source worldhealth.net/news 11/18/15) Dr. Wingert

It’s been a wet winter so far and predictions for the remainder of the season are looking to set records for rain. The Pro shop sends email blasts out regularly to inform us of course conditions and cart status. If you are not receiving these please call the shop, get on their email list and stay tuned.
In this month’s billing you will receive the 2016 Tournament Schedule Card. There are additional cards in the Pro shop.

Next month the second installment of the solar assessment will be due.
The Greens Committee has marked and our crew has started to remove trees that didn’t make it out of the drought. The plan is to work around the course in quadrants, as not to disrupt the entire course all at once. Please see the postings for the schedule and trees marked for removal.
The House Committee has chosen an Interior Decorator to help design the future look of the interior of the clubhouse. Bar chairs have been ordered and should arrive within the next few months. A sample chair will be on display in the clubhouse.
