DAY 2: SAN SALVADOR VOLCANO – VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK– FLOWER ROUTE (B)
Today we will visit El Boquerón, the crater of San Salvador Volcano.
Locals say that it has this name because the crater resembles a big
mouth (Boquerón = Big Mouth). At approximately 1,700 meters above
sea level, it provides a cool climate in between 15 – 23 ºC. We will be
able to walk to the edge of the crater and admire its beauty.
After this we will continue to Volcanoes National Park, where three
amazing volcanoes (Izalco Volcano, Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro
Verde) embrace beautiful Coatepeque Lake which fills a crater of
another volcano. Izalco Volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes in
America since it was born in the 1700’s, whereas Santa Ana Volcano is
thousands of years old. Izalco Volcano was known as the “Lighthouse
of the Pacific” since its lava guided the ships on the Pacific Ocean Coast.
No lava is currently flowing, but both volcanoes are still active since
constant fumaroles are present. In Cerro Verde, located in the middle
of the other two volcanoes, we will walk around its extinct crater
providing breathtaking views of Izalco, Santa Ana, and Coatepeque
Lake.
Transfer to Flower Route for overnight.
Lodging at Flower Route.
DAY 3: FLOWER ROUTE TOWNS – COFFEE TOUR(B)
The Flower Route is a coffee plantation area in the Western side of El
Salvador. It contains 4 main towns and it has a comfortable weather
due to the altitude. The towns are Nahuizalco, Juayua, Apaneca, and
Ataco. The region offers amazing views of mountains and volcanoes,
also offers crafts, coffee tours, charming towns, markets, and adventure
options.
We will visit a coffee plantation and if the tour is done within coffee
season (DEC-MAR), travelers will be able to collect coffee themselves
along with the locals. After this experience, a guided tour will explain
each step of the coffee process. Travelers will be able to buy coffee
products and crafts as souvenirs. We will enjoy lunch in a charming
restaurant in the area.

DAY 4: JOYA DE CERÉN – SUCHITOTO COLONIAL TOWN (B)
El Salvador is part of the Maya World, and we will visit its main
archaeological site. Joya de Cerén was declared a World Heritage Site
by UNESCO in 1993. This agricultural community was buried by the
ashes of Volcano Caldera back in 600 AD for which it is also known
as the “Pompeii of the Americas”, even though no bodies were found,
there are signs that its inhabitants received prompt warning of the
eruption. Thanks to the excellent preservation, this site allows us to
witness the everyday lives of the Mesoamerican agricultures of such
time period; we can witness their homes, beds, crop fields and even
saunas. This makes it a unique place within the Maya World. There is
also a comprehensive museum on site. After lunch we will continue to
Suchitoto.
Suchitoto is one of El Salvador’s colonial towns. Its name means the
place of the Flower Bird. Suchitoto is home to Santa Lucia Church,
built in 1853, majestically situated in the town’s central square. We will
walk along the charming cobblestone streets surrounded by lovely old
colonial homes.
Lodging at Suchitoto.
DAY 5: INDIGO WORKSHOP – MONKEY TOUR – CACAO TOUR – JIQUILISCO BAY (B)
Today we will learn about Indigo. Indigo is a natural colorant extracted
from the Xiquilite plant. It was a very important element for the Mayans
since they used it for magical/religious rituals, as a medical plant, for
pottery, and for painting. When the Spanish “Conquistadores” arrived
to El Salvador in 1524, Indigo became the new source of wealth in
the region. Pedro de Alvarado noticed how the Indians used several
shades of blue in their clothes. In 1558, the Habsburg King Charles
I ordered the territories of Guatemala and Cuscatlán (El Salvador), to
produce indigo for Spain. The commercial route was through Granada,
then to Cartagena de Indias from where it travelled to Spain. In the XVII
century the ounce of indigo was as valuable as gold. El Salvador indigo,
has always been recognized as top quality worldwide. We will learn
the process of indigo as well as art techniques used on clothing as we
experiment in designing our own scarf.
Afterwards we will transfer to Jiquilisco Bay. Jiquilisco Bay is a UNESCO
Biosphere reserve (one of 14 in all Central America). It is El Salvador´s
largest and most important wetland and the largest mangrove
estuarine system in Northern Mesoamerica. It contains mangrove
forests, estuaries, sand bars, beaches, 27 islands of varying size, fresh
water lagoons and seasonally flooded forests. Its 637 square kilometers,
represent a transit point to at least 87 species of migratory birds.
Later, we will visit a Monkey Community, we will walk through a forest
until we reach their home, after calling their names; the monkeys
come down the trees and interact with the visitors. We will also learn
about Cacao within the plantation. El Salvador produces Criollo Cacao,
which is known to be top quality worldwide. We will learn about its
production and the process it undergoes until it becomes delicious
chocolate!

DAY 6: OPTIONAL HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLE TOUR OR FREE MORNING – EL SALVADOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (B)
This morning we will enjoy a Sea Turtle Boat tour. Four species of sea
turtles nest in El Salvador: Baule (leatherback turtle), Carey (hawksbill
turtle), Golfina (olive ridley turtle) and Prieta (green turtle); all of them
considered endangered species. The tour in Jiquilisco Bay will focus on
the Hawksbill, one of the most endangered species in the world. For
the Hawksbill, Jiquilisco Bay is the main nesting point on all the Eastern
Pacific.
For the tour, we will get in a boat to the waters of Jiquilisco Bay. Local
administrators will provide a general presentation on sea turtles and
will explain the process on how they are protecting them at Jiquilisco.
This tour consist of capturing a turtle, observe how the biologist studies

DAY 2: BOQUERÓN - ALEGRIA TOWN AND LAGOON - JIQUILISCO BAY (B, L) El Salvador is the country with more volcanoes per square kilometers
in the world; this is because there are many volcanoes in a very small
country, (20,000 square kilometers). From San Salvador, we have access
to visit beautiful volcanoes. Today we will visit El Boquerón which is
the name of the crater of San Salvador Volcano. Locals say that it has
this name because the crater resembles a big mouth (Boquerón = Big
Mouth). At approximately 1,700 meters above sea level, it provides a
cool climate in between 15 – 23 ºC. We will be able to walk to the edge
of the crater and admire its beauty.
DETAILED ITINERARY:
Then we will travel east to Alegría town and lagoon. Alegría is a
charming town located within mountains and volcanoes filled with
coffee plantations. Besides the town lies what many people call the
Emerald of America; a sulfur lagoon at the crater of Tecapa Volcano.
We will have lunch at Alegría. Then transfer to hotel in Jiquilisco Bay.
Jiquilisco Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve (one of 14 in all Central

contains mangrove forests, estuaries, sand bars, beaches, 27 islands

637 square kilometers, represent a transit point to at least 87 species of
migratory birds. The coastal mangroves and estuaries help reduce the
vulnerability of coastal communities and agricultural lands to natural
disasters such as floods; helps stabilize the local climate, and serves as a
nursery and refuge for a high diversity of ecological species.

DAY 3: MONKEYS – HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLE TOUR – JIQUILISCO BAY (B, L)Today we will enjoy a Sea Turtle and Monkey tour. Four species of sea
turtles nest in El Salvador: Baule (leatherback turtle), Carey (hawksbill

considered endangered species. The tour in Jiquilisco Bay will focus on
the Hawksbill, one of the most endangered species in the world. For
the Hawksbill, Jiquilisco Bay is the main nesting point on all the Eastern
Pacific.
We will enjoy a boat tour in Jiquilisco Bay, to learn about the Hawksbill
Sea Turtle. Hawksbill turtles have helped keep our oceans healthy
for millions of years. Today, the hawksbill is near extinction. They are
captured and killed in fishing activities—entangled in coastal gillnets
(especially lobster gillnets) and shrimp trawls, and are victims of illegal
blast fishing practices that also destroy the local ecosystem. Hawksbill
eggs are collected for consumption and sale by poachers who live in
regions of extreme poverty where the eggs are an important source
of protein and income. Hawksbills also are the only sea turtle species
collected for the shell (tortoise shell or bekko) by craftspeople, which
turn them into combs, pennants, sunglasses and other trinkets. Other
threats add to the problem, including pollution, large-scale oceanic
nutrient shifts and global warming. This tour consist of capturing a
turtle, observe how the biologist studies and measures it while the
visitors are given an explanation, and then release the turtle into the
water again. For the monkey’s tour, we will walk through a forest until
we reach their home. After calling their names, the monkeys come

that has four main towns: Nahuizalco, Juayua, Apaneca and Ataco.
The region offers amazing views of mountains and volcanoes offering
crafts, coffee tours, charming towns, markets, and adventure options.
Today we will start our day by visiting what may very well be the origin
of the Mayan Civilization: Santa Leticia archaeological site, which goes
back 600 years B.C. The most significant aspects of this area are three
monuments called “gordinflonas” or “potbellies” which resemble the
face and body of a woman. The smallest one weighs 14,000 pounds

in all Central America). It is El Salvador´s largest and most important
wetland and the largest mangrove estuarine system in Northern
Mesoamerica. It contains mangrove forests, estuaries, sand bars,
beaches, 27 islands of varying size, fresh water lagoons and seasonally
flooded forests. Its 637 square kilometers, represent a transit point to
at least 87 species of migratory birds.
In here we will visit a Monkey Community, learn about Cacao within
the plantation and also enjoy a boat tour within Jiquilisco Bay. For
the monkey tour, we will walk through a forest until we reach their
home, after calling their names; the monkeys come down the trees
and interact with the visitors.
Then continue to La Unión.

DAY 7: ICACAL BEACH – SEA TURTLE TOUR – RURAL SCHOOL VISIT - SAN SALVADOR. (B, L)
In the morning we will head to El Icacal beach, considered one
of the best beaches in El Salvador. El Salvador only has coasts on
the Pacific Ocean, and most of them are of volcanic origin. A small
community of about 40 families lives in El Icacal. We will head to El
Icacal beach to start our visit with the local school and learn how
our nonprofit organization is working in order to keep children in
school as well as teach them about the importance of protecting
the environment. We will also visit a sea turtle nursery where the
administrators will provide a general presentation on sea turtles and
will explain the whole process on how they are protecting them in
El Icacal. Four species of sea turtles nest in El Icacal: Leatherback,
Hawksbill, Green and Olive Ridley; all of them considered
endangered species. After the explanation, you will participate in the
release of sea turtles into the Pacific Ocean. If in season, it is common
to release about 100 sea turtles per day. We will then have a boat
tour guided by locals through the beautiful mangroves where we
will be able to spot several species of birds. Then some free time to
enjoy the beach.
Afternoon, return to San Salvador.

Today we will visit Suchitoto, one of El Salvador's colonial towns. Its name means the place of the Flower Bird. We will walk along the charming cobblestone streets surrounded by lovely old colonial homes. Suchitoto is home to Santa Lucia Church, built in 1853, majestica lly situated in the town's central square.

It was a very important element for the Mayans since they used it for magical/religious rituals, as a medical plant, for pottery, and for painting. When the Spanish“Conquistadores” arrived to El Salvador in 1524, Indigo became the new source of wealth in the region. Pedro de Alvarado noticed how the Indians used several shades of blue in their clothes. In 1558, the Habsburg King Charles I ordered the territories of Guatemala and Cuscatlán (El Salvador), to produce indigo for Spain. The commercial route was through Granada, then to Cartagena de Indias from where it travelled to Spain.
In the XVII century, the ounce of indigo was as valuable as gold. El Salvador indigo, has always been recognized as top quality worldwide. We will learn the process of indigo as well as art techniques used on clothing as we experiment in designing our own scarf. El Salvador´s indigo is considered of the highest quality in the world.

country, (20,000 square kilometers). From San Salvador we have easy access to visit some of these beautiful volcanoes. In this trip, we will visit Volcanoes National Park which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, three amazing volcanoes (Izalco Volcano, Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro Verde) embrace beautiful Coatepeque Lake which fills a crater of another volcano.
Izalco Volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes in America because it was born in the 1700's, whereas Santa Ana Volcano is thousands of years old. Izalco Volcano was known as the “Lighthouse of the Pacific” since its lava guided the ships on the Pacific Ocean Coast. D) CITY TOUR SAN SALVADOR- SAN SALVADOR VOLCANO AND JOYA DE CEREN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE: San Salvador is the second largest city of Central America with a population of about 1.8 million people. We will visit the main landmarks of the city including downtown where we will see the National Palace, a neoclassic building built in 1905. It has a beautiful central patio as well as more than 100 rooms. We will also visit the Metropolitan Cathedral which substitutes the previous edifications destroyed by earthquakes or fires. The Cathedral is surprisingly wide and large (Neo-Romanesque and Byzantine) and celestial drawings are painted on its cupola. Inside stand a wooden figure of the Divine Savior of the World and the tomb of Archbishop Romero, a martyr and an important figure for El Salvador. Rosario church is also an interesting stop. With its bizarre building, it holds the grave of Father José Matías Delgado, a very important figure of the Central America independence. Then we will also drive by the main avenues and streets until we arrive to a local crafts market where you will be able to buy some souvenirs.
Then we will visit San Salvador Volcano (Boquerón). El Salvador is the country with more volcanoes per square kilometers in the world. El Boquerón is the name of the crater of San Salvador’s Volcano. Locals say that it has this name given that the crater resembles a big mouth (Boquerón = Big Mouth). At approximately 1,700 meters above sea level, it provides a cool climate in between 15 - 23 ºC. We will be able to walk to the edge of the crater and admire its beauty.
In the afternoon, we will visit Joya de Cerén archaeological site, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993, and it is known as the “Pompeii of the Americas”. This agricultural community was buried by the ashes of Caldera Volcano back in 600 AD.
