Using Integers

Objective

• To write and solve equations involving integers.

• Why? Writing equations and solving equations is continuing to add to the layer in the foundation of mathematics. You still must comprehend what the problem is asking you to do or solve.

California State Standards NS 2.3 : Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication,

division problems, including those arising in concrete situations, that use positive and negative integers and combinations of these operations.

AF 1.1 : Write and solve one-step linear equations in one variable

MR 2.5: Express the solution clearly and logically by using the appropriate mathematical notation and terms and clear language; support solutions with evidence in both verbal and symbolic work.

MR 3.0: Move beyond a particular problem by generalizing to other situations.

How to Write an Equation Using Integers

1) Read the word problem.2) Pick a strategy to solve the word problem- often

used is to make a sketch.3) Circle the question being asked. 4) Underline the relevant information. 5) Cross out or ignore unimportant information.6) Identify the zero point and any negative numbers.2) Solve or evaluate the equation. Follow all rules of

How to Write an Equation Using Integers

• In the 1st quarter of the football game, the Redhawks gained 7 yds on the first play and then lost 10 yds. On the third play they gained 8 yds. How many yards had the Redhawks gained or lost by the end of the three plays?

Solve It!? = What is the total

yardage in 3 plays?

Lost = -Gained = +

+7, -10, +8

y = +7 + -10 + +8

y = +7 + +8 + -10

y = +15 + - 10

y = +5 yd.

The team gained only 5 yd.

1) The Bulldogs lost 12 yd on the first play, gained 5 yd on the second play, and lost 3 yd on the third play. How many yd had the Bulldogs gained or lost by the end of the 3 plays?
