We’ve been sharing our Christmas stories, especially holiday happenings, both happy and perhaps for some, disappointing or sad. And now our daily lives head into “ordinary” time when we pick up routines and patterns that’ll take us through to Lent and Easter. While reflecting on this, two things came to mind. First, so much of what we might call “ordinary” and maybe take for granted, is really extraordinary. It takes courage, foresight, effort, cooperation, good will and most importantly, a strong sense of hope and always, love. Second, I recalled an old and much-used catchcry, one we’ve all heard in any number of situations: “Think globally….act locally”. We’ve heard it proclaimed (maybe we’ve even joined the chorus on occasion) when we speak of the Environment, Quality of Life, Poverty, Oppression and many of the other realities of people who suffer and hope. It simply challenges me to do what I can to make a difference where I am right now, while I support efforts to make the world a better place. This call to arms is attributed to Patrick Geddes, a Scottish town planner in 1915 who saw the need to act at the local level if we are to hope for change on a larger scale. So we each can make a difference and the combined effect of our efforts leads to change on the larger scale. History is full of champions who show us how it can be done. Our recent Australia Day Award recipients join their number. So back to our parish community life. Vatican II revealed in a very clear way, the call on each of us to share in the work of the Church. More than 50 years ago, the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity (1965, #2) declared: “In the Church there is a diversity of ministry but a oneness of mission. Christ conferred on the Apostles and their successors the duty of teaching, sanctifying, and ruling in His name and power. But the laity likewise share in the priestly, prophetic, and royal office of Christ and therefore have their own share in the mission of the whole people of God in the Church and in the world.” Pope Francis has repeated the call to evangelise and to act with mercy towards those with whom we live and work and even further afield. “….all of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family.” (Message for World Mission Sunday 2016). These words speak to us. Our parish communities offer a range of opportunities to minister to others. Some of these are formal groups with activities and programs. Others are simple tasks we undertake to support our life and living as a community. During Lent, the Mitchelton and Grovely-Samford communities will experience a “Call to Ministry” Sunday across our worshipping centres. So watch this space. Let’s keep doing ordinary things extraordinarily well and look for an opportunity to “Think globally….act locally”. Doug Brownlow A very warm welcome to Fr. Lucius Edomobi Fr. Lucius Edomobi will be joining our parish in his role as Associate Pastor in March. Fr. Lucius is the youngest son of a family of eight – four sons and four daughters – and started his seminary formation in 2003 at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Nigeria. He obtained a double degree in Philosophy and taught in the minor seminary for two years before returning to theological studies. Following a request from Archbishop John Bathersby, Fr. Lucius arrived in Brisbane in August 2010 to continue his seminary formation. Fr. Lucius was ordained into the priesthood at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in December 2012, this will be his third placement following Burleigh Heads and Gympie. We look forward to having Fr. Lucius with us.

The season of Lent starts with Ash Wednesday on March 1. Early next week more details about the Lenten Program will

be posted on the AFE website www.stwilliams-afe.com and a short talk at the Masses at Grovely and Samford will occur on the following weekend.

Mitchelton will run its program as it did last year but parishioners who cannot fit in with the Mitchelton times can come to the AM or PM sessions at Grovely. The program will involve a session once a week (about 90 minutes each time) for the 6 weeks prior to Easter Sunday. Many parishioners are attracted to the small groups which run in a parishioner’s house. The other alternative is the larger groups which run at Grovely – one on a Monday morning and the other on the Tuesday evening. People who wish to attend the larger groups at Grovely will be able to register at all the Masses on February 11 / 12. By then, all the dates and details will be available on the website. The title of the program this year is “Up from the Waters” and as usual it will help people prepare, in a meaningful and prayerful way, for Easter – the pinnacle of our Christian faith. At the Mass at Grovely on Australia day, a number of people mentioned that they were unaware that the national anthem had a third verse and were surprised at its strong Christian sentiments. Try googling it to see what it says. Have you checked out the “library loans” link on the AFE website www.stwillams-afe.com to see what is possible if you wish to borrow a book?

Later in this month, on 20 February, it will be the World Day of Social Justice. How does the Brisbane Archdiocese describe Social

Justice groups? According to its website, https://brisbanecatholic.org.au/support/social-justice/, the Archdiocese sees these groups as those that “seek to bring the values of the Reign of God, as the Church teaches us, to bear on

situations of injustice, oppression, disadvantage or conflict. They operate in parishes to promote: • a greater awareness of Catholic Social Teaching • choices in our lives which reflect a commitment to the values espoused by this

Teaching • involvement in advocacy and action which seeks to bring about social change

which is consistent with the principles of the Church’s teaching.

Some of the issues on which local social justice groups work include: • injustices faced by Indigenous Australians • poverty in Australia and in less developed countries • the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers • the working conditions of Australians • life issues such as abortion, stem cell research and the death penalty • human rights abuses in Australia and overseas • violence, conflict and war • climate change • water conservation. Another February initiative that we could say links into Social Justice projects is Feel Good February, a website dedicated to promoting good deeds and random acts of kindness towards a stranger http://www.feelgoodfeb.org. As with Social Justice, it works on the principle of redressing the balance of negative situations with positive acts each of us can do. We dismantle our apprehension of “the other” and difference by acknowledging the humanity we all share.

David and his wife were attending a marriage seminar on communication. At one point the facilitator said, ‘It is
