As a school community, it is important that we (schools and parents/carers) are consistently reinforcing the school values with our children as these values underpin our approach to behavioural expectations. As a school community, we expect a high standard of behaviour from all children and school stakeholders. It is important that any inappropriate behaviour is dealt with according to school and departmental processes, procedures and/or legislation. Our school values are “Be Respectful”, “Be a Learner”, “Be Safe” and “Be Resilient”. Please continue to support us by discussing at home with your children the importance of schooling, the need to strive for excellence and the importance of manners, respect and good behaviour. By facilitating this support to our school, we ensure we sustain productive and positive relationship between home and school, and that is of great benefit to children in the long term. ATTENDANCE MATTERS With the start of a new school year, it is a time to reinforce to children that daily attendance to school is vital for their future success. Research shows that students who have good attendance are more likely to achieve high results at school. If students aren’t at school or don’t stay the whole day, they are missing valuable lessons which will help them to achieve to their full potential. DAY 8 Day 8 passed last week (Thursday 1 February) and following review of our numbers in each year level, it was decided that the multi-age Year 2/3 class be collapsed and the Year 2 and 3 children in that class be distributed to straight year levels. After redistribution of the children to their year levels, I am happy to say that all class numbers remained under class size targets of DET and QTU of 25 for Prep – Year 3 classes. Our decision was made to ensure the feasibility of delivering the increased amount of teacher aide time classes have this year. This we believe will provide additional support in classroom teaching and learning. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Community Members Welcome to Week 3 of Term 1. I continue to be impressed by the way children have settled into the new school year. I had the opportunity to visit some of the Prep classrooms last week and the children were very

settled and engaged in their learning. I have no doubt many of the young Prep children end the school week very tired and exhausted after an active week of learning.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

With the start of a new school year, it is a time to reinforce to children that daily attendance to school is vital for their future success. Research shows that students who have good attendance are more likely to achieve high results at school. If students aren’t at school or don’t stay the whole day, they are missing valuable lessons which will help them to achieve to their full potential. Parents and carers can visit http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/fact-sheet.html for more information on student attendance requirements.

MEET ‘N GREET

I was extremely pleased at the turn out we had at last Tuesday’s Meet ‘n Greet afternoon. The winners of the lucky draw prizes will be drawn on parades this week and their names will appear in next week’s newsletter.

Day 8 passed last week (Thursday 1 February) and following review of our numbers in each year level, it was decided that the multi-age Year 2/3 class be collapsed and the Year 2 and 3 children in that class be distributed to straight year levels. Our decision was made to ensure the feasibility of delivering the increased amount of teacher aide time classes have this year. This we believe will provide additional support in classroom teaching and learning. Resourcing has a definitive amount and unfortunately it was not possible to accommodate the current classroom structure and the increase in teacher aide hours.

BEING RESILIENT

Resilience is the capacity of an individual to adapt to events and changes by “bouncing back” thereby continuing their healthy functioning, and building their capacity to cope with future life events and hardships Young people who are resilient tend to be more hopeful and confident and possess higher self-worth when times get tough. Resilience is not a personality trait that a person is born with, rather, most children living in supportive families and communities learn ways to adapt under normal circumstances just as they learn ways to be resilient when times are difficult. There are a number of predictors of resilience many of which can be actively encouraged and taught:

• problem-solving skills and ability to focus • emotional and behavioural regulation • self-efficacy, self-worth and a positive self-perception • believing that life has meaning and hope • being involved with faith based or other group affiliations • feeling valued for some trait or ability • having friends who are accepted in the child’s circle • feeling connected to school and having an effective school

experience • living in an effective community (eg safe, with emergency

services, recreation centres, options for young people) • experience the presence of caring, competent adults in their life

(eg parents, carers, teachers, extended family member) Remember, children see children do, so model being resilient for them. Anthony Porta, Guidance Counsellor

SCHOOL CHAPLAIN A warm welcome back to Hambledon State School to all of our returning families and the many new families who have joined us this year. My name is Stephen Kersnovske and I’m the School Chaplain at Hambledon State School. I am at Hambledon School on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. The children call me Chappy Steve. This is my fifth year in the role of School Chaplain. One of my main roles is to provide social, emotional, spiritual and practical support for children, parents and staff. I meet with students individually at the request of a parent, teacher, administration staff or via our Student Support Team. Children also self-refer to see me. A permission form will be sent home if your child wants to meet with me on an ongoing basis. If you would like to meet with me, please call the school office or email me at [email protected] Throughout the year I run a variety of social and emotional programs including Drumbeat and Master Chefs (cooking groups). In addition, I run Chappy Games at lunch breaks with the help of our sport captains to provide students with structured activities. I also attend extra-curricular activities throughout the year including excursions and camps. You will often find me out in the playground interacting with students and trying to beat them in a game of handball. I will share more about my role throughout the year. I look forward to another great year serving our school community. Chappy Steve, School Chaplain

ACT4KIDS LEARN TO BE SAFE WITH EMMY AND FRIENDS The “Learn to be Safe with Emmy and Friends” program will commence on Wednesday, 14th February with our Year 1 students. It is a four week program and lessons will be delivered in one hour sessions. Class teachers will be part of these sessions and our Guidance Officer will also be able to assist. “Learn to be Safe with Emmy and Friends” is a protective behaviours program facilitated for chil-dren. To prevent potential harm, it is crucial young children learn to identify when they don’t feel safe and know safe adults they can ask for help. This beneficial program teaches children how to:

• identify and articulate their feelings

• understand the difference between safe and unsafe secrets

• identify early warning signs to alert them of when they are in danger

• identify public and private body parts

• develop awareness of personal body space

• identify trusted adults and what they can do when they feel unsafe.

Permission forms are being sent home—please return as a matter of priority. Sharon Begemann, Event Organiser and Teacher
