Course Objectives• Examine the challenges of a multi-system trauma patient, changes in

trauma care that have occurred in the last several years, and the role of the National Trauma System.

• Manage pain in the trauma patient using opioids and adjunctive medications appropriately.

• Diagnose acute carbon monoxide poisoning pathophysiology and determine appropriate treatment for acute inhalation injury.

• Perform basic immobilization and splinting for common childhood fractures before referring to an orthopedic surgeon.

• Differentiate characteristics of typical handgun wounds; shotgun, rifle, and high-velocity wounds from frangible ammunition; and from entrance and exit wounds.

• Describe the epidemiology of childhood injury in disaster and mass casualty events and list child specific mitigation strategies that can facilitate recovery from the event.

• Discuss strategies to decrease traumatic exposure for patients; utilize tools to help professionals challenge biases; and provide resources for trauma symptoms and determine best practices for treating them.

experts. In addition, we seek to enhance

our community and pediatric colleagues’

ability to manage pediatric trauma cases.

We will provide a forum for informal

learning and discussion as well as formal

presentation in the areas of pediatric

trauma. The conference will provide

various learning methodologies presented

by experts in the areas of pediatric trauma.
