Curriculum focus – what we will be working on in class this term
Content Assessment
English In the first unit, students will examine narrative texts, using the fictional novels as a stimulus. They will develop their ability to write engaging, entertaining narrative texts. They will develop their ability to
understand, interpret and experiment with sound
devices and imagery, including simile, metaphor and personification, in narratives.
The second unit focuses on persuasive texts and the language good writers use to persuade others. In this
unit, students will listen to, read, view and interpret a range of news articles and reports from journals and newspapers to respond to viewpoints portrayed in media texts. Students will apply comprehension strategies, focusing on particular viewpoints portrayed in a range of media texts.
Students will write an adventure or fantasy themed narrative text. Create literary texts using realistic, adventure and fantasy settings and characters that draw on the worlds represented
in texts students have experienced.
Students will also write their own persuasive text using persuasive strategies and language features. Students will present a point of view
about particular literary texts using appropriate metalanguage, and reflecting on the viewpoints of others. They will understand that the starting point of a sentence gives prominence to the message in the text and allows for prediction of how the text will unfold.
Maths Students will learn to classify and interpret data and pose questions to gather data. They will build an
understanding of data, developing the skill of defining numerical & categorical data, generating sample questions, explaining why data is either numerical or categorical.
Students will learn to solve multiplication and division problems by efficiently and accurately applying a range of strategies, checking the reasonableness of answers using estimation and
rounding. They will locate, represent, compare and order fractions and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Students will develop their ability to use simple strategies to reason and solve a chance inquiry
question.
Students will complete two short answer assessments. They will interpret data and pose
questions to gather data. Students will solve problems involving multiplication and division by one- digit numbers
and compare and order common unit fractions.
Content Assessment
Science Matter Matters In this unit, students will broaden their
classification of matter to include gases and begin to see how matter structures the world
around them. They will build upon their understanding that solids, liquids and gases have some shared and some distinct observable properties and can
behave in different ways.
Students will conduct an investigation to explore what happens to the amount of evaporation
when a container of water is placed in the sun.
Students will develop a scientific question and prediction, and create a scientific method. Students will identify safety considerations, record observations, make a graph of the results, identify patterns in their data and
compare patterns with predictions when suggesting explanations. Students will also describe ways to improve the fairness of their investigation.
HASS
(Humanities and Social
Sciences)
This unit focuses on how people manage
communities. Students will explore the people who are important in creating and managing laws and regulations and how they interact with the community. They will investigate how communities respond to natural hazards, such as floods and fires and how they plan for these
events.
Students will learn to explore data to evaluate how communities deal with extreme natural hazards and then use data to propose a plan to deal with a specific extreme natural event.
The assessment is organised into three parts:
students describe the role of different people in the Australian legal system;
sort and record data, including large scale maps according to the simple conventions;
propose an action plan using a timeline
for a community to respond to an
extreme natural event.
The Arts Students will learn to make and respond to
dance by exploring ways that dance can be used to express adventure stories drawing on stimulus from movement contexts including martial arts, acrobatics, sport, exercise and other cultural forms.
Students will perform a celebratory dance which
tells a story, undertaken in groups. Appropriate costumes can be worn and music may be chosen by the student group.
Technology Digital technologies will include learning the component parts of computers and how they work together to transmit data. Students will
learn to use simple block coding software with Sphero balls in order to create a maze game.
Students will be assessed on their ability to identify component parts of computers and how they work together.
Students will also be assessed on their ability to use simple block coding software.
Health Students will learn about establishing and maintaining friends and relationships. They will also explore how feeling, emotions and mood
can affect their own and other’s behaviour.
Students will work individually and in group situations to recognise the influence of emotion on behaviours.
P.E Unit: Netball Students will perform the specialised netball skills of catching, throwing and goal shooting. Students will combine movement concepts and
strategies during games to move the ball down the court while in attack and to develop skills of defence. Students demonstrate fair play and
skills to work collaboratively during netball activities and games.
Students will be assessed on their proficiency to perform the following: chest and shoulder pass, goal shooting, attacking strategies to move the
ball down the court and defence. Students will also be assessed on their ability to play fairly and work as a team.
Music This term students are learning about how
music is used in movie making to create atmosphere, emotion and how it is used to represent characters.
Students will create their own music to
accompany a silent movie in order to represent characters, set the scene and add emotion.
LOTE During Term 1, students will learn how to introduce themselves using formulaic grammar, and listen to and comprehend simple ‘jikoshokai’
in Japanese. They will also participate in a variety of cultural activities aligned with the Japanese calendar.
Formative: 1. Everyday simple Japanese language used within the classroom.
2. Listening comprehension test on stationary items. Summative: 1. Self-introduction paired role-play or individual speech about self.
2. Teacher 1:1 interview Q and A
