Dear Friends, “Pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” These timeless words from the Hail Mary capture the meaning of the two special dates in this upcoming week. Thursday, November 1 , is All Saints Day; and Friday, November 2, is All Souls Day. We ask our Blessed Mother to “pray for us” because we want to be holy, full of grace, and belong to God as wholly as she does. To be holy is to allow God to fill you with His love and grace, and on the Solemnity of All Saints Day we celebrate that God can really do that in our lives!
“Now and at the hour of our death.” On November 2 we pray for the souls who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. That is, we pray for all those who have died and ask that they be purified of any stain of sin (i.e., Purgatory).
Recommended activities on Friday include attending Mass, visiting the cemetery, and praying the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet. One will sometimes see a gravestone which says, “Pray a Hail Mary for me.” On November 2, we should especially do our part to pray for the holy souls in Purgatory.
