I just did the best I could.” After the two second- inning hits, Carswell’s best was more than good enough as he retired the next 17 straight Valdosta hitters before pinch hitter Blake McCann legged out an infield single with two outs in the top of the eighth. But with Kaleb Whit- field having re-entered the game to run, North catcher Randall Watson gunned down the Wildcats’ center- fielder trying to steal. And Carswell got Val- dosta in order in the top of the ninth, giving him a string of retiring 22 of the final 23 batters he faced. The problem for North was as well as Carswell was pitching, Eager, who scattered eight hits and two runs — only one earned — over eight-plus innings, was throwing just as well. The Bulldogs did tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Alex Hartz led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, wound up on third on an infield grounder and then, after a two-out intentional walk to Wes Brooks, came home when Blake Sangster rang a liner off Eager’s leg for an RBI infield single. But despite allowing runners on base in every inning — including the lead-off hitter four times from the third to the eighth innings — the Wildcats’ right-hander came up with enough clutch pitches to keep the Bulldogs at bay. “Yeah, (Eager) com- peted pitch-for-pitch with Ben,” Moity said. “It was an absolutely outstanding performance by their guy. We talk about battling and competing all game. We knew at some point we were going to get to him. We just didn’t think it was going to take so long.” But finally, after Matt Andryusky led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, North caught a couple of breaks on consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts. First, Hartz, who finished the day 2-for-4, laid down a hard bunt that Eager fielded and tried to get the force at sec- ond, only to pull Logan Stephens off the bag with a wide throw. Then, Kenyon popped another bunt attempt into the air, but the ball fell in just the right spot between first, second and the mound to allow the Bulldogs centerfielder to leg out the single and load the bases with nobody out. That brought up Hines, who was very confident despite going 0-for-4, including hitting into a double play, to that point in the game. “I told (Moity) before I went up (to the plate) I was going to win the game,” Hanes said. “I was going to get the job done no matter what.” And after getting ahead in the count 3-1, Hanes did just that, driving a hard-hit fastball from Eager past the drawn-in infield and into right for the walk-off hit, and send- ing the Bulldogs to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Kennesaw Mountain in a best-of- three series beginning Tuesday. It was a tough ending to the series, and the season, for Valdosta, which battled hard all series, and espe- cially for Eager. “We just battled the whole way,” Wildcats coach Bart Shuman said. “It’s too bad one of those guys (Eager or Carswell) had to be the loser. … These kids just dug deep. North Gwinnett’s got a great team. We just battled them. I’m very proud of them.” •From Page 1B Parkview, Buford move up nationally Parkview and Buford have had a presence in several sets of national rankings throughout the 2015 high school baseball season. But the two teams’ re- cent success by advancing to the quarterfinals in their respective classifications of the GHSA state play- offs have only bolstered that presence. The most recent com- pilation of five major na- tional polls has Parkview as the near-consensus No. 1 team in the nation, with Buford also appearing in the composite polls, with an average ranking of No. 16. Included in the compila- tion is the Perfect Game poll, which has the Pan- thers (28-4) and Wolves (28-4) ranked No. 1 and 2 respectively. In addition, Parkview is ranked No. 1 in the na- tion by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and MaxPreps, while USA Today’s Super 25 poll currently has the Panthers ranked No. 9. Buford, meanwhile, appears in two other polls besides Perfect Game, being ranked No. 12 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 20 by Baseball America. Both teams have been dominant through their first rounds of the state playoffs, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 65-2 in eight total games. FROM STAFF REPORTS Track up nine points in the field events with a third-place fin- ish by Stephanie Reynolds in the high jump. Maria Har- ris added three points with a seventh-place finish in the discus throw and an eighth- place finish in shot put. “We had some really good field events today,” GAC head coach Brad Kin- ser said. “Had a freshman Maria Harris come down and medal in both events, two PRs. That’s awesome because you never know how freshman are going to do. Then Stephanie Reyn- olds was third in the high jump and some really good qualifiers. I think Saturday is going to be a lot of fun.” GAC’s performance on the track later in the day has the Spartans set up for a potential top-five fin- ish. Reynolds posted the top qualifying time in the 100 meter hurdles with a wind-aided 14.95 and ran a leg in the 400 meter relay as the Spartans posted the second fastest time in AA with a 49.11. The duo of Nia Brown and Kennedy Street ad- vanced in the 200 meter dash as the Spartans locked up six spots in the finals, including both relay teams. “Our goal coming down was to get people in there for Saturday and maybe get on the board and get a trophy,” Kinser said. “I think we’re somewhere up there, we’re battling.” The Spartans ended the day with eight points from a runner-up finish by Abby Kettle in the 3,200 meter run. Despite some pain in her Achilles, Kettle posted a career-best 11:36.55, the second-fastest time in school history. “I was hoping (I would PR),” she said. “My Achil- les has bothered me but I knew I was ready to run.” Brookwood was the lone AAAAAA Gwinnett team to score a point Thursday as Mackenzie Ellison finished eighth in the 1,600 meter run. •From Page 1B Wesleyan’s Maddie Jones leaps over the bar in the Class AA girls high jump final of the state track meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. North

was going to give them everything I had. I just did the best I could.”

After the two second-inning hits, Carswell’s best was more than good enough as he retired the next 17 straight Valdosta hitters before pinch hitter Blake McCann legged out an infield single with two outs in the top of the eighth.

But with Kaleb Whit-field having re-entered the game to run, North catcher Randall Watson gunned down the Wildcats’ center-fielder trying to steal.

And Carswell got Val-dosta in order in the top of the ninth, giving him a string of retiring 22 of the final 23 batters he faced.

The problem for North was as well as Carswell was pitching, Eager, who scattered eight hits and two runs — only one earned — over eight-plus innings, was throwing just

as well. The Bulldogs did tie the

game 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Alex Hartz led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, wound up on third on an infield grounder and then, after a two-out intentional walk to Wes Brooks, came home when Blake Sangster rang a liner off Eager’s leg for an RBI infield single.

But despite allowing runners on base in every inning — including the lead-off hitter four times from the third to the eighth innings — the Wildcats’ right-hander came up with enough clutch pitches to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

“Yeah, (Eager) com-peted pitch-for-pitch with Ben,” Moity said. “It was an absolutely outstanding performance by their guy. We talk about battling and competing all game. We knew at some point we were going to get to him. We just didn’t think it was

going to take so long.”But finally, after Matt

Andryusky led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, North caught a couple of breaks on consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts.

First, Hartz, who finished the day 2-for-4, laid down a hard bunt that Eager fielded and tried to get the force at sec-ond, only to pull Logan Stephens off the bag with a wide throw.

“I told (Moity) before I went up (to the plate)

I was going to win the game,” Hanes said. “I was going to get the job done no matter what.”

And after getting ahead in the count 3-1, Hanes did just that, driving a hard-hit fastball from Eager past the drawn-in infield and into right for the walk-off hit, and send-ing the Bulldogs to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Kennesaw Mountain in a best-of-three series beginning Tuesday.

It was a tough ending to the series, and the season, for Valdosta, which battled hard all series, and espe-cially for Eager.

“We just battled the whole way,” Wildcats coach Bart Shuman said. “It’s too bad one of those guys (Eager or Carswell) had to be the loser. … These kids just dug deep. North Gwinnett’s got a great team. We just battled them. I’m very proud of them.”

Parkview, Buford move up nationallyParkview and Buford

have had a presence in several sets of national rankings throughout the 2015 high school baseball season.

But the two teams’ re-cent success by advancing to the quarterfinals in their respective classifications of the GHSA state play-

offs have only bolstered that presence.

The most recent com-pilation of five major na-tional polls has Parkview as the near-consensus No. 1 team in the nation, with Buford also appearing in the composite polls, with an average ranking of No. 16.

Included in the compila-tion is the Perfect Game

poll, which has the Pan-thers (28-4) and Wolves (28-4) ranked No. 1 and 2 respectively.

In addition, Parkview is ranked No. 1 in the na-tion by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and MaxPreps, while USA Today’s Super 25 poll currently has the Panthers ranked No. 9.

Buford, meanwhile,

appears in two other polls besides Perfect Game, being ranked No. 12 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 20 by Baseball America.

Both teams have been dominant through their first rounds of the state playoffs, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 65-2 in eight total games.

From StaFF reportS

Track

up nine points in the field events with a third-place fin-ish by Stephanie Reynolds in the high jump. Maria Har-ris added three points with a seventh-place finish in the discus throw and an eighth-place finish in shot put.

“We had some really good field events today,” GAC head coach Brad Kin-ser said. “Had a freshman Maria Harris come down and medal in both events, two PRs. That’s awesome because you never know how freshman are going to do. Then Stephanie Reyn-olds was third in the high jump and some really good qualifiers. I think Saturday is going to be a lot of fun.”

GAC’s performance on the track later in the day has the Spartans set up for a potential top-five fin-ish. Reynolds posted the top qualifying time in the 100 meter hurdles with a wind-aided 14.95 and ran a leg in the 400 meter relay as the Spartans posted the

second fastest time in AA with a 49.11.

The duo of Nia Brown and Kennedy Street ad-vanced in the 200 meter dash as the Spartans locked up six spots in the finals, including both relay teams.

“Our goal coming down was to get people in there for Saturday and maybe get on the board and get a trophy,” Kinser said. “I think we’re somewhere up there, we’re battling.”

The Spartans ended the day with eight points from a runner-up finish by Abby Kettle in the 3,200 meter run. Despite some pain in her Achilles, Kettle posted a career-best 11:36.55, the second-fastest time in school history.

“I was hoping (I would PR),” she said. “My Achil-les has bothered me but I knew I was ready to run.”

Brookwood was the lone AAAAAA Gwinnett team to score a point Thursday as Mackenzie Ellison finished eighth in the 1,600 meter run.
