Learn techniques, textures, and design to style simple, but beautiful jewelry, bales, patina, finishing, findings and firing, both with a kiln and with a torch. When fired the binders burn off and you have beautifully detailed metal pieces! For those with previous experience, we will have more complex pendant and earring projects with the emphasis being on design and perhaps stone setting. Students will go home with at least 4 pendants and 4 pairs of earrings they will be proud to wear or give as gifts.

PAINTING COLOR & LIGHTSydney HaleThe Cape School of Art in Provincetown introduced me to a way of seeing light and color in the tradition of The Impressionists. Outside, working first with block studies, still life, and then progress to a landscape, you will learn how to closely observe color notes and color relationships that define the “light key” of the moment. The training of your eyes to see this way will reward you with more a brilliant, exciting painting. I encourage the use of palette knife to avoid “drawing.” Paint can be applied freely and more dramatically to keep your color pure and vibrant.

PAINTING FROM PHOTOSMary WinnPainting from life is the best way to learn to “see” color, value, and shape, but it’s not always possible. Subjects which move, such as boats and animals, plus vacation photos from distant locations are all subjects that need to be painted from photographs. Learn why photos do not contain enough information to make an accurate painting and explore ways to make well-designed paintings from photos. I will do a quick demonstration from my photo during the morning and students will then work from the same photo. Students should bring 1 or 2 printed photos to work from during the afternoon. Student may also work from an iPad or cell phone photos, but please keep the subject simple.

PAINTING MEMORIES IN STILL LIFEKathleen DenisLearn to paint not only a still life with great composition and color harmony, but also experience the joy that comes with painting memories that last a lifetime. Kathleen generously and thoroughly teaches the essential elements during a demo, and hands on personal instruction throughout the workshop, to help you create a great painting. As Kathleen sees first-hand the joy her memory paintings bring to her collectors, she too made her own memory paintings while grieving the loss of her mother. “It was wonderful to feel such delight as I painted the arrangement sent on behalf of my mother. Incorporating a photo of her and dad added an extra special touch in the painting that I will treasure forever”. You too will learn to create a masterpiece painting with lasting, happy memories.

PAINTING LARGE OILS Douglas DavidThis workshop will help you get comfortable with the process of painting larger canvases. Plan to complete one large painting each day- a floral, a seascape and a landscape. Each day includes demonstrations, interesting and memorable discussions on all the basic elements of painting including composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, and depending on your own style, knowing when a work is finished (learning how to not overwork your painting). Douglas delivers sound principles of painting that are an incredible foundation for your painting, and regardless of your skill level, it will make sense. Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is their own and will grow and develop at a rate that is to their comfort. Douglas’ approach to painting is very simple, and he helps you walk through various steps and stages so you can manage and maneuver through larger canvases. There is nothing to be afraid or self-conscious of, and Douglas will get you through the tricky parts, all while having fun.

PAINTING SEASCAPESDouglas DavidAn incredible workshop to teach you about painting the sea! Class will cover the basic principles of oil painting with regard to painting seascapes. After the basics are covered, we will start by painting a wave and several seascapes in various atmospheric conditions throughout the 3 day workshop. For those who have studied with Douglas before, this overview of principles is always a good review, and no matter what the subject, these principles are key, and new discussions and tips are added each season. Each day’s demo will include simple discussions on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, near and far, capturing and developing atmospheric distance, and depending on your own style, knowing when a work is finished (learning how to not overwork your painting). Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is their own. Demos and individual discussions/instruction will help each student begin to reach the preliminary goals they are striving to meet. Plan to produce several studies and at least one or two larger paintings.

It is a very forgiving medium if one proceeds properly, and corrections can be made easily along the way. There will be demonstrations and exercises focusing on using big shapes to design a successful composition, learning about values and colors, using light and shadow. PASTEL FOR BEGINNERS – ELEMENTS OF THE LANDSCAPE Sandra PlacePastel is one of the most permanent and versatile of all painting mediums, allowing for many corrections and layers to build up to beautiful paintings. They are immediate, spontaneous and allow the use of both subtle and vibrant color and many different painting styles. We will discuss different types of papers and pastels and do a few exercises to learn the kinds of strokes used to achieve various painterly effects, as well as a basic use of colors. There will be a short demonstration of a simple landscape painting including common landscape elements such as skies, trees and grasses. Then, students will do a landscape painting from their own photograph. Students will learn how to begin, proceed and finish a painting, as well as how to avoid and overcome common problems. There will be plenty of personal attention given to each student.
