Jon C. Szal Jon C. Szal, a lifelong resi-dent of Eden, NY was grant-ed his angel wings on April 28, 2016 at the age of 62. Although frail from a stroke he suff ered in 2009, he still enjoyed a courageous zest for life. Jon could often be found at tractor pulls, gun and car shows. Earth Day Clean-Up a Big Success! All the members of the Lake Shore Boys & Girls Club did a tremendous job cleaning up garbage for Earth Day (Friday, April 16) and sprucing up the areas and fi elds around our schools, as well as some locations in the village of Angola. Not only did they have fun competing to collect the most trash, but they also learned the importance of community service and keeping the environment clean and free of debris. Kudos to all of our kids that participated in making this Earth Day a success and for their hard work! The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to promote and instill service to others as part of the experience we of-fer to the youth of Evans and Brant. Building character and establishing values is a major focus of ours, and the youth that enter our building have all shown tremendous growth in this regard. We will also be helping out with the “I Love My Park Day” at Evangola State Park on Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM by setting up blue bird boxes (bird houses) that our kids assembled here at the Club. Pictured are some of our Club members and staff that participated in the clean-up project, showcasing the gar-bage they were able to gather.

To: Lake Shore Central School Community and Taxpayers of the Evans-Brant Central School DistrictFrom: HoganWillig, Attorneys at Law
Student Safety Concerns at Lake Shore Central SchoolsOur firm represents the owners of the properties located at 8700, 8696, and 8686 North Main Street in Angola, N.Y. These properties border a private roadway connecting the Lake Shore Central School District’s property to North Main Street along the Lake Shore Central Transportation Department’s facility located at 8710 North Main Street.
The private roadway is really a narrow, two-way driveway with a 4 inch curb on one side and a chain link fence on the other. There are no shoulders and no sidewalks on either side of the road and no cross-walks on any portion of it, resulting in pedestrians walking on the road alongside vehicles. The road is also poorly lit. It is concurrently used by vehicular and pedestrian traffic, including students, parents, school employees, buses, maintenance vehicles and the community at large, causing congestion and unsafe conditions for all of these users. Further up the roadway is perpendicular parking on both sides of the road, so that cars are in effect driving through a parking area and pulling in and out of parking spaces with limited visibility in an area with high pedestrian traffic.
The property located at 8700 N. Main Street was sold at foreclosure auction in 2015 to our client as a result of his bid in the amount of $590,663.74. Our client is willing to sell this parcel to the Lake Shore Central School District for an amount substantially less to allow the district to make necessary improvements to address student safety. The adjoining parcels at 8698 and 8686 North Main Street are also available for purchase by the Lake Shore Central School District.
As residents of the Evans-Brant Central School District, and as long-time neighbors of the school, our clients believe in the importance of improving student safety on school grounds, including enlarging the roadway, creating desig-nated walkways, installing additional lighting, and adding enough space for buses to maneuver in and out of the bus garage. Ownership of these parcels by the school would also allow the district to enhance parking, provide storage for maintenance equipment, expand athletic fields, and expand the transportation department’s facilities. The par-cel at 8700 North Main Street is 1.12 acres and offers a 40’x120’ pole barn with 14’ overhead doors. The adjoining parcels total 1 acre and offer a 35’x80’ two story barn with 10’ overhead doors.
We believe that both the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Department of Trans-portation offer incentives for schools to address student safety. It is our understanding that the Evans-Brant Central School District currently receives an aid ratio of 87%, which means that 87% of its capital project would be funded by NYSED. We also understand that there are other resources available to cover the remaining 13%. Our clients would be committed to helping to avoid any financial impact on taxpayers and assist the School District in obtaining whatever aid is available in addressing this serious student safety concern.

Local Student Captures 3rd Place in Student Advertising Competition
For a fourth time in recent years, Roger Williams Univer-sity students - including Michelle Taylor, a Public Relations major from Derby, NY, continued to build on their success in a competitive student advertising competition with a third-place win this month. This year, an interdisciplinary team of 22 students - comprised of majors in marketing, graphic design, web development and media communication - competed in the regional round of the 2016 National Student Advertising Competition, earning the top-three fi nish against nine oth-er colleges and universities from Connecticut, Massachu-setts and Rhode Island. In the annual competition, the National Student Adver-tising Campaign, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation, enlists a corporate sponsor to provide a case study that identifi es a real-world problem, as well as as-sociated campaign objectives and a campaign budget. The challenge this year was to generate greater brand engage-ment for Snapple and appeal to consumers beyond the bev-erage company's traditional stronghold in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. From conducting their own research to thousands of ac-tual consumer interviews and surveys, the students devel-oped an integrated communications campaign for the cli-ent, including a comprehensive plans book that suggested a new brand slogan and expanded focus on unique adver-tising opportunities - like mobile screen takeovers on Spo-tify and Pandora apps, gas-pump ads and pop-up Snapple facts that appear when scanning a phone over an in-store advertisement. Many of the students worked on the year-long campaign through a project-based course - which also bridged several disciplines - led by Professor of Marketing Geraldo Matos. When they presented all this work at the regional com-petition in a 20-minute multimedia pitch to a panel of judges (comprised of advertising professionals and client representatives), the Roger Williams students stood out among the nine other teams, according to Matos. "The judges lauded both the quality of the work and the presentation skills of the students," Matos said. "This competition is a truly immersive, hands-on experience that closely mimics what it takes to work in an advertis-ing agency. These students will have a leg up among their peers when they enter the workforce." Securing the third-place regional victory, the RWU team bested students from Emerson, Quinnipiac, the University of Hartford, Simmons, Fitchburg State and Salem State. Boston University won the competition. Team member Brendan McQueeney, a marketing major and global communication minor, credits the group's suc-cess to drawing on the strengths of their interdisciplinary skillset and the expert guidance of Professor Matos. "The class was completely hands on from day one," Mc-Queeney said. "Professor Matos pushed us beyond out potential while providing direction based on his years of experience in the marketing world. We generated our own work. The product and experience is something we're not only very proud of, but will also be able to show to employ-ers as the work we can complete and have already done." This is the fourth time that the RWU team has placed in the competition: the team took fourth in 2010 and second in 2011 and 2012. The University did not enter the compe-tition for the past two years.

Learning About Robots at A.J. Schmidt Elementary
Students in fourth and fi fth grade at A.J. Schmidt El-ementary school recently participated in a robotics and coding club, where they were exposed to early facets of S.T.E.M. education. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, and is a growing occupational and educational concentration area. In this after-school club, students interacted with drones, gyroscope robots, and created code to command a robot named “Dash.” Led by Occupational Therapist, Kathryn Wagner, and Library Media Specialist, Karleen Derrick, robotic club students worked cooperatively in groups, engaged in problem-solving, and higher-level mathematical thinking. In addition, students completed a culminating challenge by creating a group-made curriculum review game, which they then had to negotiate their robot to the correct an-swers presented to them on a fl oor grid. Both parents and students provided strong praise for this exciting, new after-school learning opportunity!

Lake Shore Freshman Academy Dressing to Impress
Dressing to impress has become an annual tradition for the freshmen in the Lake Shore Freshman Academy. Cur-rently, students in Freshman Seminar are learning how to make positive fi rst impressions in both their professional and personal lives. Lake Shore freshmen take pride in their appearance and are applying lessons learned in class to their lives when going on job interviews, presentations, dances, weddings and even more solemn ceremonies to both respect themselves and show respect to the people around them. These students may be only 14 or 15-years old, but they are learning how to apply professionalism in their lives now and after high school. A special thank you goes out to our wonderful Lake Shore parents for supporting this annual tradition!

Southtowns Catholic School gets African Drum Lesson
Southtowns Catholic Schools International Club had a special guest as they were learning about Africa. Mrs. Car-rie Ann Ford came in and told the club about her mission-ary experience in Africa and demonstrated all the diff erent drums. She explained how every beat had a diff erent mean-ing. Mrs. Ford is a singer, songwriter, actress and teacher, who has been sharing her message of God’s unfailing love with audiences across the globe for 20 years. She spent al-most 10 years touring the United States, Europe and East Africa using drama and music to communicate the awe-some, healing, saving power of God in her life. E2CCB Carrier Educational Center Receives $4,485 Toolbox
for Educational GrantLowe’s donates money for Aquaponics program
The Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB) Car-rier Educational Center has received a $4,845 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for the Natural Resources: Aquaponics Program. The grant will be used to construct an outdoor greenhouse on the school campus to bolster its already ro-bust indoor hydroponics system. “We are excited to be able to build up our program through this grant,” said Scott Farr, aquaponics instructor at the Car-rier Center. “Our grant application was based on the goal of expanding the educational opportunities outside of our in-door lab, and a greenhouse will provide another avenue for our students to grow and harvest plants while learning about outdoor agriculture.” The Carrier Aquaponics program, the only one of its kind in New York State studies the evolution of traditional farm-ing into a highly technological and scientifi cally-based profes-sion. It is used to fuel indoor farms, where the principles of agriculture can be taught and practiced throughout the year. A section of the aquatic facility is dedicated to fi sheries man-agement including subjects like breeding, hatching, and rais-ing native species for farm-to-table. The combination of these related disciplines allows students to possess the skills and foundation to seek a career in, or to continue their education in, fi sheries resource management, hatcheries, and in all as-pects of farming/agriculture and fi sheries biology. Currently, students work and learn in an indoor lab with multiple fi sh tanks and growing areas that produce fresh edi-ble plants like basil, lettuce, and microgreens as well as trout, tilapia and shrimp. The entire system is sustainable: the fi sh water feeds the plants and then circulates back into the tanks. In addition to these activities, the class also maintains work-ing chicken and quail coops. All of the items grown or raised in the program, from greens to fi sh and eggs, are given to the Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management class which they in turn use in their food preparation. “On behalf of everyone at the Carrier Center, I’d like to thank Lowe’s for generously supporting this program,” added Jaime Venning, E2CCB director of career and technical educa-tion. “It’s great knowing that we have the support of commu-nity businesses who understand the importance of the work that’s being done in our career and technical programs.” Construction of the Carrier outdoor greenhouse is sched-uled for the next two months. The Carrier Educational Center off ers seven two-year ca-reer and technical programs that allow high school juniors and seniors to gain experience and technical knowledge in highly specialized fi elds while earning a Regents Diploma. Students who complete program requirements receive a Technical Endorsement on their diplomas and are prepared to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation or pursue more advanced levels of study at post-secondary educational institutions.

Garden Club Project Underway As part of Earth Day, our newly founded Garden Club was hard at work potting some plants and fl owers to beautify the main entrance of the W.T. Hoag (Club) building. Thanks to KeyBank, the Club received a generous grant to operate our very own Garden Club that has started meeting weekly. The kids are in the beginning stages of learning about diff erent kinds of plants, plant parts, how to properly care for plants, and much more! Our members did a very nice job in tak-ing an interest in helping the Earth by adding more plants, and making the building grounds an even prettier sight. The future plans for Garden Club include plotting and planting a vegetable garden on location that the kids will tend and care for, as well as incorporate into our Healthy Habits Cooking Club. Stay tuned for more Garden Club updates! Pictured are some of our Garden Club members that partici-pated in putting together the potted plants on Earth Day.

J.T. Waugh Elementary Hosts “Evening with the Arts”
Recently, the John T. Waugh Elementary school host-ed their fi rst annual “Evening with the Arts.” The event brought families to the school for an evening of music and art. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the varied talents of the students as well as guest artists. As guests arrived, they were greeted by instrumental soloists, Emma Coventry, Erin McGarrity, Joshua Merritt and fourth-grade student Megan Strickler. The schedule provided an opportunity to enjoy a third and fourth-grade recorder performance, and 5th-grade Af-rican drumming which included audience participation. The audience also participated in line dancing led by sec-ond graders. Native American singing and dancing was led by third-grade student Ethan Steeprock, and the night was capped up with a performance by The Guerrillas, an all male a capella singing group from SUNY Fredonia. The night was also an opportunity to celebrate the visual arts. Student artwork was hung throughout the school for the families to enjoy. Families were invited to art room for a painting session as well. All participants created a small painting that they were able to take home that night. A unique addition to the evening was having guest artists demonstrate and showcase their work. Dr. Steven Mayo worked on a pastel drawing while talking to interested ob-servers. Ceramics artist Sara Zielonka demonstrated on a pottery wheel while answering questions. Native American artists Alyssa Montour, Aëdza:’niyo M. Seneca, and Samantha Jacobs worked on beading while showcasing their amazing work. Jordan Cooke, Seneca Language Teacher, had a hands-on display of a variety of artifacts which were a big hit with guests of all ages. The evening was planned by music and art teachers Alicia Faust and Janel Wade, with assistance from Nancy Klemens, Title VII Home-School Liaison and Special Edu-cation Teacher, Barb Blasz. The help of many volunteers contributed to the success of the evening. After such an enjoyable night, they are looking forward to making it an annual event.

(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me where you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecu-tive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. Grateful thanks.
