And while we all learned about the issues, perhaps the most basic and important take away for our group was that we should always be contacting our elected representatives – whether we agree or disagree with their votes and policies – to let them know how we feel. This conversation stayed with me as we walked through the desolate halls of Ellis Island’s hospital and heard about the immigrants who were able to protest the decisions made about their immigration status. As we move forward in this new year we are ever aware of the fragility of our lives, and of things being torn down around us. Let us be aware, too, of the power of our words and our speech. The BulletinNovember 2017 Cheshvan/Kislev 5778 Vol. 90 No. 16The Bulletin is supported by an endowment established by Jane R. Perlman

It’s a Monday morning in October as I write this. I am si ing in the sukkah as the wind gathers strength and the weather calls out “autumn,” and I read headlines of devastation from California wildfires, including URJ Camp Newman where structures burned but people and Torah scrolls were saved.

The day before I’d walked halls of Ellis Island’s main building and hospital and learned about the immigrants who entered

our country, and those who did not enter immediately because of illness — who spent extended stays in the hospital before they could enter the United States.

The Ellis Island visit concluded three days of a Women of NSCI Jewish New York trip that began with a walking tour of the Lower East Side led by Dr. Shira Kohn, professor of American Jewish history. On the East Side, as my grandfather called it, Friday morning we saw tenements, aid societies and se lement houses, where immigrants worked, helped, were taught English, and given other key learning and provisions as they established their lives in America. In the intervening Saturday night, we gasped at the Broadway show Come From Away, the story of Gander, Newfoundland, a small town that took in 7000 passengers from planes diverted there on 9/11 and welcomed their guests with incredible hospitality.

As we walked on the Lower East Side, we talked about milk stations for mothers and children, and learned about legislation that required tenement apartments to have windows in every room and how improvements in plumbing impacted immigrants living in the neighborhood. As we stepped off the ferry on Ellis Island, just where many of our ancestors would have disembarked from ships bringing them to the Goldeneh Medinah (Golden Land), one member of our group reflected on what it must have been like for the immigrants coming to a new and strange land – how overwhelmed they must have felt, how confusing it must have been.

Reflecting on all of this, I am reminded – not that I or any of us need reminding – of a message of Sukkot given through the experience of dwelling in a sukkah: Life is fragile! We see it every day in our lives and in our headlines. But that message is one we know and live all year round. As we do, we could well be u erly overwhelmed and stuck in the many, many things that are outside of our control. Or not…

Again and again on our New York trip, I was struck by the fragility of life, and about the difference even small numbers of

people’s words and deeds could make. On that note, let me tell you about another happening during our New York weekend. Friday night as the group sat in an Upper West Side restaurant and shared Shabbat dinner, we also spoke with one of the daughters of our group. Molly Dillon, who works on policy in New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration. Molly told us about her work on equal pay and about current issues of healthcare and health insurance. And while we all learned about the issues, perhaps the most basic and important take away for our group was that we should always be contacting our elected representatives – whether we agree or disagree with their votes and policies – to let them know how we feel. Each call/email/le er is counted and ma ers!

This conversation stayed with me as we walked through the desolate halls of Ellis Island’s hospital and heard about the immigrants who were able to protest the decisions made about their immigration status. We learned that advocates, such as those working for HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) met with them and helped them advocate to stay in the United States.

As you read this, Sukkot is long over. But as you do, please hear the echoes of Ecclesiastes, words which are traditionally read on Sukkot. We read that there is a season for everything, a time for every experience under heaven including: a time to be born and a time to die…a time to tear down and a time to build…a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing…a time to tear and a time to sew, a time to keep silence and a time to speak.

As we move forward in this new year we are ever aware of the fragility of our lives, and of things being torn down around us. Let us be aware, too, of the power of our words and our speech. We too can advocate for others. We too can embrace others. We too can make a difference in our world.

HVAC Replacement

Concrete Facade Repair

President’s LetterAs I mentioned over the High Holy Days, we have spent much of the last year repairing and improving our beautiful building. Dean Weinberg, Chair of the Buildings and Grounds commi ee, is our guest columnist this month. Please read Dean’s column below to learn more about these important projects.— Jody

It has been a busy summer and fall for the Building & Grounds Commi ee at NSCI. I am happy to report that HVAC replacement and façade concrete repair have been successfully completed, and roof replacement will be finished shortly. These projects were all undertaken to address

long-standing issues and should reduce both maintenance and operating costs for many years to come. In conjunction with these capital projects we are revamping our preventive maintenance protocols in order to assure longevity and that we get the most out of our precious dollars spent. As with any older, highly utilized building, there is always work to do and we will endeavor to identify and address issues promptly in order to keep our beautiful building up to all of our standards.

Glen, 1850 Tower Drive, Glenview

About the film: Yoel, a senior Holocaust researcher, is in the midst of a widely publicized legal ba le with powerful forces in Austria, concerning a

brutal massacre of Jews that took place toward the end of WWII in the village of Lensdorf. An influential family of industrialists on whose land the murder took place is planning to build a real estate project on the very same land. Yoel suspects that their aim is to bury the affair for good, but has trouble finding the conclusive evidence that would stop the project. During his investigation, he also hears classified testimonies of Holocaust survivors, and to his shock and surprise, his mother is among them. Her secrets lead him into a double inquiry, both personal and scientific. As an historian with an unshakeable commitment to the truth, he decides to literally dig deeper, even at the cost of ruining his personal and professional life.

Goodman Center for Jewish Education

Dr. Roberta Goodman

Goodman Center

Partners

Surrounded by a beautiful collection of 20th century American folk art, Barbara and Ron Borden and Barbara and Victor Weisskopf hosted a lovely dessert reception at the Weisskopf’s home in support of the Goodman Center for Jewish Education. Guests heard Rabbi Sco Aaron,

Ph.D, Executive Director of the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of the JUF of Metropolitan Chicago, speak on the topic, Jewish Education Around the Country, Where Do We Fit In?

Aaron spoke about the changing landscape of Jewish education. He described the shi from the predictable steps offered through Jewish communal institutions, such as synagogues, to a constellation of experiences available through an expanding number of sources from which families choose. An interesting conversation ensued about the opportunities and shortcomings of technology in fostering community particularly within congregations. He emphasized the importance of innovation, adapting to the changing expectations of families, praising our Goodman Center for being in the forefront among congregational schools here in Chicago.

Goodman Center Partners, who donate a minimum of $500 each school year to the Goodman Center, help the school remain vibrant and desirable to families. So far we have raised over $27,175 which supports our school’s programs, projects and scholarships. We continue to invite donors at any level to support scholarships for our students through the Meyer Shisler Fund. 12% of the Goodman Center budget comes from donations and grants. These funds help the school fulfill its educational mission through innovating and providing hands-on, experiential learning tapping into students’ interests, talents and ways of learning. The Goodman Center serves 430 students and their families.

Our thanks to the Bordens and the Weisskopfs for their generous hospitality! We are grateful to the nineteen Goodman Center Partners for their support.

For more information about being a Goodman Center Partner, please contact Dr. Roberta Goodman, [email protected] or Sheryl Cohen Solomon, [email protected].

The Ruthie & Bill Katz Archives

NSCI as a Hub of Support

What is an Archive, Archivist and how can you help?By Merle A. Branner (Archivist)

It has been said that the past informs the present and the future. That is certainly true in Judaism as we read (and reread) our collective history each week. As NSCI’s Archivist, I not only preserve the past but document the present so it can be preserved for future generations. In addition, I educate with articles in NSCI’s Bulletin and with displays in Rebecca K. Crown Social Hall’s showcase.

The Ruthie & Bill Katz Archives holds the records of NSCI’s congregation, artifacts, digital files, photographs, moving images and audio recordings of events that have transpired through our 97 years of existence. The Archives’ rooms

are specifically designed to protect our materials from deterioration and allow accessibility to the materials today and in the future. You may ask: how can you help the Archives? If you were a past president of NSCI, the Men’s Club/Brotherhood, Sisterhood/Women of NSCI and want to clean out your files or boxes of materials, I would be happy to come over and pick-up your materials. If you were on NSCI’s Board of Trustees, Executive Board or Religious Board, we can also use your materials. In addition, if you have photographs or moving images of NSCI events and would like to donate, we would love to have them. If you are a long time member who has saved Bulletins and other

printed materials from the congregation, please let us know which version you have, since we will preserve a copy if we don’t have it. We are always interested in discovering what people have and determine if we need it.

For donations of NSCI materials or questions, please contact Merle Branner (Archivist) at [email protected] or leave a message with the temple receptionist, Miriam Biales.

Women of NSCI

WNSCI’s Trip to New York

We walked the streets of our ancestors even as we heard the voices of our children! Fi een women of NSCI, led by Karen Kohn and Rabbi Greene spent a fascinating weekend in New York City in early October. We learned on the Lower East Side taught by Dr. Shira Kohn and walked the halls of Ellis Island and its hospital on a hard-hat walking tour, learning so much new about immigration to the United States. We kvelled at Temple Emanu-El Friday night as we heard student Cantor Alex Kurland sing and listened to warm, loving tributes to Rabbi Allison Tick Brill who has served there for two and a half years and was marking her last Shabbat. Friday night at Shabbat dinner Molly Dillon of Governor Cuomo’s administration taught us about issues and advocacy. At the New York Historical Society we saw

challenging political cartoons by Arthur Szyk and exquisite Tiffany glass. Saturday night we gasped at Come From Away, a moving piece of theatre about Gander, Newfoundland and the community’s welcome of 7000 air passengers on 9/11. And, yes, we caught some good NYC culture, shopping and food! The weekend brought us all together in engaging conversations about our history and present and our roles in the world, even as we laughed and enjoyed one another’s company. Gratitude to Karen Kohn for planning a great trip! Talk has begun about where to go on our next trip!
