School children are now settled intothe new academic year, but I wouldfirst like to offer my congratulationsto those who collected their GCSEand A-Level results over thesummer. As you will read a little further on,

the number of Brent pupilsachieving five GCSEs at A* to Cincluding English and Maths rose by2 per cent this year to 62 per cent, whereas our A-Level studentsachieved a pass rate of 97 per cent. It is an excellent result and

testament to the hard work anddedication of our pupils. I wouldlike to thank their parents, carersand teachers who have supportedthem throughout their studies andhelped to make these resultspossible. Looking forward to this autumn,

the 2015 Rugby World Cup comes toEngland and I am delighted thatBrent will host two matches in thetournament, with Argentina takingon New Zealand on 20 Septemberand Ireland taking on Romania a

week later on 27 September, bothat Wembley Stadium. Local school children have been

given tickets by tournamentorganisers and I’m sure that all of usin Brent will take great pride in ourborough playing its part in thisglobal event. Many of you will have seen the

Rugby World Cup trophy as it visitedour new £10 million Library atWillesden Green this September. It is a wonderful new cultural and

All parents, not just those who livein areas affected by gang activity, should know what signs to look forthat their children might beinvolved with a gang. For Jay, his parents only became

aware when an angry rival gangseeking revenge, tried to get intothe house looking for their son.Fortunately for him, he wasn’t athome that night. He was just 14 atthe time. First arrested at 11, Jay is now

working with St. Giles Trust, acharity supporting ex-offenders, toturn his back on gang activity. Hesaid: “I never joined a gang, it wasjust me and a group of mateshanging out and we gave ourselvesa name. Some older kids taught ushow to steal bikes and we wouldstay out late and get into fights. “Then we started doing more

serious things like selling drugs, doing burglaries and robbingpeople. Even when I went to prison, doing time seemed worth it for therewards.” It is the reward that tempts young

people to get involved with gangs,

and it is these rewards that canalert parents and guardians thattheir children are involved in illegalactivity. Jay said: “Parents should be

suspicious if their kids are wearingexpensive new clothes or suddenlyhave money they haven’t earned, ornew mobile phones and even bikesand motor bikes parked outside. Also if they are hanging aroundwith older kids, that’s a worry too.” Cllr James Denselow, Cabinet

Member for Stronger Communities, said: “Most gang members, bothboys and girls, will end up being avictim of violence, end up in prisonor end up dead, so ignoring theissue is not an option. If parentsspot any of the tell-tale signs ofgang activity, have an honestconversation with your child andlisten to what they have to say. Then you can work out a solutiontogether.” After completing a period of

contract work and with supportfrom St. Giles, Jay is applying forapprenticeships and trying to securehousing.

Gangs – what arethe signs to look for?We spoke to a former gang member about the signs towatch out for. For his protection we have changed hisname. We refer to him as ‘Jay’.

It is an occasion of huge significancefor Brent’s rugby community, asplayer and coach Paul Quinn of theKilburn Cosmos explains: “It’s a kudos thing, a badge of

honour for the sport in this country.Hosting such an iconic internationalsporting event shows what thecountry can deliver.” Forty one-year-old Paul became

involved with the Kilburn Cosmos, the only rugby club based in Brent, when his son Carter joined the clubseven years ago. “I was on the sidelines on a

Sunday morning watching my sonplay and thought, rather thanstanding around being cold, it’d bebetter to help out in some way, so Istarted coaching and it went fromthere. “From coaching the youth teams I

also started coaching the women’steam and then started playingmyself. I played my first competitiverugby match at the age of 38! “It wasn’t difficult at all to start

playing aged 38, the club is reallyopen and encouraging and has

players of all shapes, sizes andabilities. We have players who’venever played rugby before, toplayers who’ve played for years forclubs in all different parts of theworld. “That’s one of the great things

about rugby. It is not an elitist sport. You can be a big bloke like me onthe pitch or a small person and stillbe able to make a real contributionto the team during the game. Theonly thing you need with rugby isthe willingness to go onto the pitchand the fitness will soon follow. “There is no limit to age, either.

We have teams from our juniorsright up to our veterans’ side. “I remember watching our first

team playing Old Albanians a fewyears ago and they had an old boyplaying, and he was 61 years old. He was running rings around someof our lads in their twenties! Andone woman who joined us last yearwas a 44 year-old mum of two whohad never played rugby before, butshe played her first match after justfour weeks!

Convert to rugby thisautumn This September sees the 2015 Rugby World Cup come toEngland, with Brent playing host to two of thetournament’s matches

“The new homes are being built inphases and a big project at themoment is to prepare a planningapplication for the redevelopmentof 5-9 Chippenham Gardens, whichincludes the Kilburn Park PostOffice, with the council’s adjoiningland at 4-26 Stuart Road (evennumbers only). “This project is at an exciting stage

as we’ve now started working updesigns and will be holding publicexhibitions to get feedback fromthe local community on theproposals. “In a typical day I’ll work with the

design team and other specialistconsultants to check over thedesigns and layouts.”

2:00 PM“In the afternoon, I might pop overto the Queen’s Park Placedevelopment site, which is currentlybeing built. I put on my high-visvest, boots, glasses, gloves and hardhat and take a look around with thesite manager. “This development will include 144new homes and a new Marks &Spencer and should be completeearly next year.”

4:00 PM“Towards the end of the day I’llcatch up with the rehousing teamwho are helping the secure tenantswith their allocations and assistingthem with their choices for theirnew homes.”

6:00 PM “At the end of the day I’ll headhome. A typical night for meinvolves cooking a healthymeal,(and maybe treating myself toa cake). I like watching Dragons Denor The Apprentice and doing a littlebit of singing too!”

“It’s truly a sport for everyone andthere are even different types ofrugby too with different laws, suchas touch rugby and tag rugby, whichcan be played by any age anddoesn’t involve such physicalcontact.” With games televised across the

world, the Rugby World Cup willcapture the attention of aworldwide audience and Paul hopesthat it will attract more people intothe sport from differentcommunities. He said: “Brent is one of the most diverse

boroughs in the country and I’dreally like to see rugby do whatfootball did in crossing boundaries, with more communities whotraditionally do not play rugby, trying it out. “Rugby offers a better vibe

altogether with people supportingopposing teams sitting side-by-sidein stadiums enjoying the game witha great respect for all the players onthe pitch and what they are givingfor their team.

“I hope that people see that sideof the game and take a keenerinterest in rugby after the WorldCup has come and gone. “At the Kilburn Cosmos, we’re

always looking to field more teamswith different levels of ability. I’dsay to anyone that if playing isn’tfor you, do still come down, join the family and see if coaching, refereeing or some other voluntaryrole within the club is more for you.”

New Library at WillesdenGreen officially openAfter a £10 million, two-year rebuild, The Library atWillesden Green has officially reopened to Brent residents.

The official reopening took place onSaturday 12 September as the BrentMagazine went to print, coincidingwith the Rugby World Cup TrophyTour, and giving residents a glimpseof what the 21st century library hasto offer. “Libraries are changing. They used

to be places that just issued booksand were a quiet place to study,”says Bhavi Shah, manager of thelibrary. “They now play a new role, that of

a hub for the local community, aplace where people can obtaininformation on any area, wherethey can come to educate, beentertained and to integrate andsocialise within the community.” Boasting 40,000 books, over 120

study spaces, 66 PCs, and 14 iPadsfor public use, the new Library atWillesden Green forms part of acommunity centre that also featuresexhibition spaces, a museum, archives, a performance space and acafé, which is expected to opensoon. “The 1980s part of the old library

building was tired, inefficient and

expensive to run, but this newbuilding is stunning to look at, is somuch more energy efficient andoffers so much more than the oldlibrary did. “At the time the redevelopment

was proposed, residents told thecouncil that they wanted theVictorian part of the library to bekept, and it has been. Thedevelopers have done a really goodjob in blending the charming oldwith the stunning new parts of thebuilding.” In times of cuts to council budgets,

the new library has been deliveredat no expense to the taxpayer, thanks to an agreement with adeveloper to create much-needednew homes next to the new library. Bhavi Shah said: “When you think

about the quality of the newbuilding, how it has carefullyblended 21st century and Victorianarchitecture and how the buildingoffers so much more now than itever did before, it is really clever tothink how it has all been deliveredand not cost Brent residentsanything. “

University after being inspired byher A-Level sociology studies. Cllr Ruth Moher, Cabinet Member

for Children and Young People, said:“My congratulations go to all ofBrent’s students who should feelextremely proud of what they haveachieved in this year’s exams. “They have worked extremely hard

in the last two years and I amdelighted that many students willhave secured the grades they wereaiming for, with outstandingsuccesses across the borough.”

“When I was young, smoking wasthe cool thing to do. Now, notsmoking is the cool thing to do.” Originally from Farah in

Afghanistan, Wembley residentAbdul Haidari smoked ten cigarettesa day for about 20 years before hemanaged to kick the habit. “Having children was completely

lifechanging for me” said Abdul, “Isuppose it is for every parent, but itreally crystallised for me what aterrible thing smoking is. I didn’twant my kids to be inhaling anycigarette smoke at all. That was mytrigger to quit”. Having made the decision to quit,

Abdul spoke to his GP for someadvice and help in kicking the habit, who then referred him to Brent’sStop Smoking service. “Making that phone call was the

best thing I ever did. I started onthe programme and had regularsessions with a smoking cessationspecialist who highlighted to me thedangers and designed a programmespecifically tailored for me”.

Abdul set out his commitment toquit smoking in his first session bysetting a date by which he had toquit smoking. “Of course it was hard to give up.

I smoked for 20 years. I wascompletely addicted, but I reallybelieved in my kids having asmokefree future and that’s whatkept me going. It’s easier to committo doing something when you havea goal like that. “I love saving the £150 I would

usually spend on cigarettes andinstead spend it on my kids. “I feel so much healthier now, too.

I’m no longer out of breath when Iswim or walk, which means I canenjoy doing activities much morewith the kids.”

Stoptober

The best thing that I ever didQuitting smoking is not the easiest of things to do, buthelp is at hand for those who want to stub it out of theirlives for good, as one Brent resident who successfullykicked the habit told The Brent Magazine

I’d encourage everyone to comedown and see it all for yourself. Thelibrary’s open seven days a week, sopop in to read a book ornewspaper, use our computers, tourour art gallery, have a look aroundour performance space where weshow films and put on shows, ordelve into our archives and exploreBrent’s past. There is something foreveryone here.” Cllr James Denselow, Cabinet

Member for Stronger Communities, said: “Libraries today are very muchthe hubs of our local communitieswhere residents can go to be

informed, to educate and beeducated, to entertain and beentertained and to socialise. “It is fantastic to see this stunning

21st century building open its doorsto the public, offering Willesdenresidents a chance to do all thosethings through this new library, performance space, museum, archives and soon a café too - rightin the heart of the local community.
