In What Way Does Your Media Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?

The Use of Real Media Products I wanted to keep my magazine as similar to a real media product as possible, this is because one of the main things I wanted to achieve was the professional look. I went around various shops and searched the internet to gather ideas, and created a mood board. On this mood board there where pieces which I wanted to replicate as they featured frequently throughout various Hip Hop and R&B magazines. One of the people who I referred back to a lot was Kanye West, as he is the face of Hip Hop and R&B at the minute.

On the left is Kanye West featured on the front cover of GQ. He is wearing a suit, which is something I wanted to replicate, when picturing Callum, on the right. Most Hip Hop artists have featured on a magazine while wearing a suit, so it’s a popular choice. I also wanted to capture a little smirk.

On the left is Kanye West featured on the front cover of Complex and on the right is Callum on the front of my magazine, Krew. As you can see they are both very similar, both using black and white, to capture the edge of the artist and both using a serious facial expression to capture the possible effect of the industry.

The Development of Real Media Products

Here I have a picture of the NME contents page, which I have based the design of my own

contents page on. I took the idea of the side bar and developed on

it, creating my own titles and making specific headings for my genre. I have developed on this

specific feature as I think it looks neat and professional. I have also

developed on the colours.

Here I have a picture taken from a Vibe double page spread, the picture is of Usher, which I have

based the design of my own double page spread on. The grey

colour and the quote is something I wanted to keep, but the picture just wasn’t ideal for

my artist. So I developed the picture, and developed the quote

to fit my genre.

The Challenging of Real Media Products

Although we had to base our music magazine on a real media product, this project allowed us to be creative which is something I wanted to take full advantage of. I wanted to go out of my way to capture pictures which would be likely found on a celebrities Instagram page, which is something I have never seen before. This involved me, using a lot of Photoshop, to Photoshop a picture of Justin Bieber and Callum together. It also involved staged photos at parties, and a bike ride to get the perfect picture.
