Introduction

This set includes timbre icon cards for the five basic non-tuned percussion timbres, a variety of one-beat cards with quarter notes, quarter rests, two eighth notes, and four beamed sixteenth notes; six lesson plans for young students, suggestions for older stu-dents, including a game/activity, and a list of recorded music that works well for play-alongs. The rhythm cards include a set of traditional notation and sets of timbre notation, which combines traditional stems with iconic heads to represent the five timbres and correlate with the cards/labels. The larger timbre icon cards can also serve as bin labels (a great way to organize instruments).

Teachers and students can create an endless variety of patterns/ostinatos using these cards. The cards are great for placing in pocket charts or on magnetic whiteboards for the entire class to see, as well as for hands-on student activities. This beat card system has proven highly effective in establishing foundational rhythm skills.

This system utilizes one-syllable words to categorize (and later chant) the types of sound produced by non-tuned percussion in-struments. Although I use the traditional woods, metals, skins approach to talk about what the instruments are made of, I have found that my boom, shake, click, scratch, ring system provides a broader exploration of timbre and a more defined sound when creating and playing rhythm patterns. (Note: I have chosen to use the word scratch instead of scrape because the latter sounds so much like shake in an active/noisy setting.)

A variety of formats and printing options are included. Copy masters are of two types: (1) ready for color printing and (2) black-line, which can be printed on colored paper in lieu of color printing.
