5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Page 2: Document5

Masthead is bold and appealing it is very ‘in your face’ representing the rock/indie genre and eye catching the use of red and black connote danger and violence relating to the rock/indie genre as ‘mosh pits’ are seen as dangerous and ‘mosh pits’ are associated with rockers

My target audience will be fond of attending gigs and so the chance to win tickets will mean they will want to buy my magazine

I have included posters that my target audience are interested in and this would be more likely to attract girls emphasising that my magazine is not only aimed at boys but also at girls as girls tend to be the ones to stick posters up on their walls of lead singers who they admire etc.

Including gig guides will appeal to both male and females and as gigs are something rockers and indie kids enjoy going to this will mean they are likely to purchase my magazine

Likely to be interested in the new albums and so listing these new and upcoming albums will mean they will purchase my magazine

Priced at a price most people can afford

My target audience are likely to listen to these bands and magazines such as ‘Kerrang!’ include the same sorts of bands

Page 3: Document5

The person on the front cover represents the moody outrageous style that of the rock/genre and is dressed in rock/indie style clothing with ‘Drop Dead’ branded clothing (a rock clothing brand) and has outrageous red hair which stands out attracting the reader as my target audience are likely to dye their hair frequently themselves as this is common of the rock/indie sub culture and so this instantly lets the reader know that this is a rock/indie magazine. The person on the front cover is also young and therefore attracts my target audience further.

The electric guitar is commonly associated with the rock/indie genre and so makes it clear that this music magazine is a rock/indie magazine

‘PLUS!’- Makes the reader think that my magazine contains a lot of content which they might be interested in and want to have a flick through my magazine. The bold capitalised font stands out to the reader and represents the loud & bold attitude of the rock/indie genre

Similar layout and content to magazines such as ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Rock Sound’ which my target audience are already likely to read.

Words such as these attract people from the rock/indie genre

The fonts used increase interest as they are visually appealing

Page 4: Document5

Similar mode of address used in magazines such as ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘NME’ ,exciting the reader with what’s to come in the magazine the language is informal and uses language of my target audiences culture for example words and phrases such as ‘newbie’ ‘world of rock’ ‘fancy a laugh?’ and ‘keep rocking!’ Portraying the loud and bold attitude of the rock/indie genre connecting with the reader. The tone is also very friendly and welcoming like the rock/indie genre itself.

The person in my dominate image is dressed to attract the ‘indie kids’ as he is young and wearing typical indie clothing and is pulling a relaxed and ‘sexy’ pose.

The girl in this image represents the rock/indie genre with the way she is dressed as she has dark clothing on and is wearing piercings ( typical of the rock/indie genre) she also has red and black hair and so again this is something which appeals to the ‘rockers’ and ‘indie kids’ this also shows how my magazine is aimed at both males and females including images of both males and females.

Included album covers of rock artists such as ‘Avril Lavigne’ this would attract my target audience as magazines such as ‘NME’ and ‘Kerrang!’ include album covers on their contents pages too. To help the reader know what is inside the magazine

Page 5: Document5

Includes bands which they are likely to listen to and bands such as ‘You Me At Six’ are mentioned in magazines like ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘NME’ all the time which are what my target audience are likely to read already

Both album and live reviews are things my target audience would be interested in reading as they are keen to get the latest news on their favourite bands and artists. And ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘NME’ are magazines which include this feature all the time and as they are likely to read these magazines this will attract my target audience furtherThe subscribe feature is written in white text with a red stroke on it which

against a black background stands out and catches the readers eye. The tone is friendly and addresses the reader informally. The use of exclamation marks again emphasises the loudness of the rock/indie genre and excites the reader

The layout is simple, clear and direct like the rock/indie genre itself. It allows the reader to see the images on the page clearly and the fact i have only decided to write minimal information regarding the content inside for example the only thing written explaining what is on the page is the name of the band my magazine makes the reader curious and want to read more it also represents the simple mindedness of the rock/indie genre

Page 6: Document5

The language used in my article would appeal to my target audience being informal, friendly and using words and phrases they are likely to use such as ‘buzzing’, ‘pretty sweet’ and ‘awesome’

The male in the images represents the rock/indie genre well he is dressed in dark ‘A Day To Remember’ band clothing and is playing an electric guitar which is an instrument associated with the rock/indie genre. His red hair attracts the target audience and the 3 different poses increase interest as he ‘looks up’, ‘across’ and then ‘down’ these different positions also make him more visually appealing

My target audience are likely to be fans of the internet and like to go on websites which are associated with their sort of culture and therefore including a website for the magazine this would appeal to them and encourage them to go onto the website.

The article talks about achieving your dreams and is about a young male ‘James Stone’ who is new to the world of rock and how he never thought he could achieve what he has therefore this would appeal to my target audience as they are likely to be aspirers and hope to make it big in the music industry someday themselves therefore this article would interest them and give them hope

Page 7: Document5

The question and answer based article is easy for the reader to read and is better than just lots of boring text it engages the reader and keeps them interested and appeals to the them as they get an insight as to how this ‘newbie’ to the ‘rock world’ is feeling and what his goals are in life. By reading about him they may aspire to be like him and feel that their goals are achievable too. The reader may also get a sense that they too can become a successful artist and therefore this would make them want to buy my magazine. As articles like this would interest them.

Mentioning when ‘James Stones’ single is out attracts the reader as it gives them information they are interested in knowing. And encourages them to download it

The use of the yellow stroke effect around the questions being asked makes it more eye catching and simple to read making my magazine more appealing to my target audience.

The colour red connotes danger and the colour yellow connotes light and brightness therefore this could suggest that although the rock/indie genre is seen as violent and dangerous good things come out of it for example good music careers and yellow also connotes hope for the readers who aspire to be like him.

Page 8: Document5

Instantly grabs readers attention with loud, bold, capitalised font representing the noisy and bold attitude that of the rock/indie genre appealing to them. The red connotes danger something representing the violent and dangerous nature of the rock/indie genre

The stand first stands out to the reader with it’s capitalised font and yellow stroke effect connoting hope which appeals to my target audience as they hope to be as successful as ‘James Stone’ it also represents the bold and aspiring nature of the rock/indie genre . The colours and fonts stand out well and grab the readers attention

By having the images on one page and article on the other it avoids confusion and makes it simple for the reader. It enabled me to make the images larger and attract my target audience more with the images being more oustanding
