The Liturgical Posture of Standing

By Bill Uhl

Have you ever wondered why we stand, sit, and kneel several times throughout the liturgy? Each of these liturgical postures carries great significance. Since standing is the first posture we assume when Mass begins, I’ll address it in this article. I’ll discuss sitting and kneeling in future articles. During Mass, we stand often. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), “The faithful should stand from the beginning of the Entrance Chant, or while the Priest approaches the altar, until the end of the Collect; for the Alleluia Chant before the Gospel; while the Gospel itself is pro-claimed; during the Profession of Faith and the Universal Prayer; and from the invitation, Orate, fratres (Pray, brethren), before the Prayer over the Offerings until the end of Mass” (n. 43). (In the United States, we may kneel after singing the Holy, Holy, Holy. We may also “sit or kneel during the period of sacred silence after Communion” [n. 43].) Standing not only links us to our ancient roots but also is an expression of hope. In The Spirit of the

Liturgy, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI presents both the historical aspects of standing and what it means for us today. Praying while standing was common in both Old Testament and Jesus’ times (194-95). For Christians, standing signifies victory: “Jesus stands in God’s presence—he stands because he has trodden death and the power of the Evil One underfoot” (195). Standing also signifies readiness: “Christ is stand-ing up at the right hand of God, in order to meet us” (195). What should our attitude be toward standing? “When we stand, we know that we are united to the victory of Christ, and when we stand to listen to the Gospel, it is an expression of reverence. When this Word is heard, we cannot remain sitting; it pulls us up. It demands both reverence and courage, when he calls us to set off in some new direction, to do his will and to carry it into our lives and into the world” (195). May Pope Benedict’s words inspire us. Whenever we attend Mass, may we stand reverently, pray for the courage to answer God’s call, and proclaim with hope, “I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.”

Practical Catholicism

Dive deep into your faith with Practical

Catholicism – now meeting Saturday

mornings at St. Peter. The saints open a window for our minds and hearts to hear God. The Practical Catholicism Ministry invites and challenges you to deepen your faith and enrich your life by diving into the writings of saints and harmonizing their lessons with Holy Scripture and the Catechism. Join us in the St. Peter Catholic School lecture hall from 8:30am-10:30am on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. We’ll gather to jointly explore how we can apply these lessons and live more like saints. Coffee and refreshments will be provided to energize our studies! For more information, contact

Wade Feller at 719-332-0414 or [email protected]. Learn more at petertherock.org/practical-catholicism.

Safe Environment

One of the most effective tools

we have to protect our

children and youth from those

who would do them harm is to

develop our listening skills.

We must learn how to listen to what is not said as

well as to what is said. If we monitor the nonverbal

channels of communication when listening to

others, we will develop into truly empathetic

listeners.

Una de las herramientas más efectivas, que tenemos

para proteger a nuestros niños y jóvenes de aquellos

que les pueden hacer daño, es desarrollar nuestras

habilidades para escuchar. Debemos aprender a

escuchar lo que no se dice, así como lo que sí se dice.

Si monitoreamos los canales de comunicación no

verbales cuando escuchamos a los demás, nos

convertiremos en oyentes verdaderamente

empáticos.

"The MASS"- A Lenten Journey

Walk through the Liturgy of the Mass with

Bishop Robert Barron of Word on Fire and be

transformed through insights on the

most privileged and intimate encounter with Our

Lord.

See how Mass brings us out of this fallen world

and into a heavenly realm, how it

revolves around a call from God and a

response from His people, The Church, and most

importantly, how we are intimately joined,

through His Sacrifice on the Cross, with the

Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ

in the Holy Eucharist.

Plan to join our parish family in a dynamic 6

part series during Lent (DVDs are less than 1/2

hour each) immediately following all weekend

Masses in the church sanctuary, beginning

March 9/10 through April 13/14.

Come with us on this special Lenten pilgrimage

that will provide a deeper understanding,

appreciation and love of the

Holy Eucharist- "the source and summit of the

Christian life."
