Father’s Day Prayer

Lord, please bless our fathers,

these men who mean so much to us,

who are greatly responsible

for who we are and who we are becoming.

Bless them for having the courage

to do what’s necessary to keep us out of trouble,

for making us do the right thing,

for helping us build our character,

even when it makes us angry;

and bless them for pushing us to do our best,

even when they just want to love us.

Bless our fathers for being our protectors,

for leading us through stormy times to safety,

for making us believe that everything will be all

right

and for making it so.

Bless our fathers for quietly making a living

to provide for those they love most,

for giving us food, clothing, shelter

and the other material things that really matter,

for unselfishly investing time and money in us

that they could have spent on themselves.

Bless our fathers, Lord,

for saving some energy for fun,

for leading us on adventures

to explore the outer reaches of ourselves,

for making us laugh,

for being our playmates and our friends.

Bless them for being our secure foundation, our rock,

for holding on tight to us...until it’s time to let us go.

Lord, bless these men we look up to,

our role models, our heroes,

our fathers.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen. By Joanna Fuchs

Focus Team Reports

Life Development – Neil Houff – The team has a job description put together for a youth director. They are making progress on the formation of the search committee.

Stewardship – Rusty Rothgeb – Building the pavilion in the grove is not an option; it will harm the trees. Another possible location would be between the playground and the garden where electricity and water hookups are available. Loads of fill dirt would need to be brought in to grade the area. A motion was made to continue working on the project , seconded and passed by the board. The team hopes to make a presentation to the congregation before the October congregational business meeting.

Ministry – Gary Huffman – no report.

Discipleship – Anna Manikus – no report.

Fellowship – Tori Heatwole – There will be a reception this evening following the recital. There will be an appreciation meal for those involved in All Music Sunday, June 2nd, 5th Sunday breakfast in June, and All Church Birthday Party in July.

Evangelism – Sharon Reich – Kristin Carr had a meeting with everyone going on the Haiti trip at the end of July. There will be light construction work on a school and then time to spend with children and senior citizens. They also hope to take agricultural tours. Around $2000 was raised at the dinner April 25th for the Haiti trip. Montezuma COB will also be having a fundraiser.

Music and Worship – Chris Auville – The organ and keyboard are in need of repair. One amp on the sound system has been fixed and another one needs work.

Treasurer’s Report – Alan Landes - $76,055 in checking; $37,000 in committed funds ($11,400 NYC; $9000 Dinner theatre; $6000 Haiti –doesn’t include dinner money); $41,000 General Fund.

Youth Pastor’s Report – none – Steve Spire was with the Senior Highs.

Pastor’s Report – Pastor Matthew gave his resignation. He will continue to be pastor until he receives a call to another congregation or the church finds a pastor. A letter will be going out tomorrow to the members of the church. There will also be a letter from Dennis Miller.

New Business - Neil proposed that Cole Scrogham be hired as a part time administrator to oversee the search process for a pastor(s) and/or the discernment process for what the church is looking for in a pastor(s). A motion was made, seconded and approved by the board for Dennis Miller, Neil Houff, and John Jantzi to work on a job description for this.

There will be a called board meeting on May 19th following the combined service for the approval of the job description. A called congregational business meeting will be held on June 2nd at 6:00 p.m. to bring the proposal regarding Cole’s position before the congregation.

Hello and greetings! Allow me to introduce myself (and my family) to you… I am 45 years old and other than a 5-year period of time have lived all my life in the Shenandoah Valley. I consider myself truly blessed to be able to live within a few miles of the “Homeplace” of both my grandparents, as I have a keen interest in history and heritage. This heritage manages to combine a love for this area with some Church of the Brethren history…one of my ancestors was Johannes Garber who was the first Brethren minister in the Shenandoah Valley, and some of my oldest family gravesites are located at the Middle River Church which planted Pleasant Valley.

I have been married to Suanne for 24 years this August 19th, we started dating in high school and she hasn’t been able to lose my phone number since! Our children are Sydney who will turn 20 this September, Michael (17) and Luke (11). Sydney is a Sophomore at Bridgewater College, Michael is graduating from Fort Defiance HS and plans to enter JMU as an Engineering Freshman this Fall, Luke is enjoying an early summer from being home-schooled and playing lots of baseball. We live near New Hope in a very quiet, rural setting with a nice view of the mountains.

I began to feel the call to ministry while away from home starting a new business in the Danville, Va area. I realized that not only did I want to be back in the Valley, but that I wanted to move my relationship with Jesus Christ to a deeper level. The first step was to enroll in Christian Growth Institute classes, which are administered by Bethany Seminary through the District and consist of 12 separate study segments requiring a total of four (four hour long) sessions over three years. During this time the call to ministry was confirmed, and I began to back away from my business involvement to focus on training for ministry and was licensed in 2008.

I found that my life experiences had prepared me for many challenges that would be important for ministry, and began to explore ways to broaden those experiences in practical ways. Serving at the Church Board level, teaching Sunday School, organizing Outreach and Evangelism programs and preparing for a new church plant in the Verona area kept me quite busy for several years. Having “real world” experience gave me a unique perspective on the ministry, a perspective that I took to the Summit Church of the Brethren along with plenty of life lessons. After serving that congregation as Pastor for several years, I discovered that full time ministry as the only paid staff member of a congregation was not for me, and have been looking for a part time situation since then while serving in several District positions.

Along the way I have found time to do some writing which I enjoy, as well as help my father with his car business and keep up with the kid’s activities. … I enjoy coaching sports, and really enjoy the history and design of cars, especially little German ones. I have taken a consulting role with a sports car racing team for a schedule totaling 10 weeks per year, and am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with Faith Emphasis from JMU. I am looking forward to getting to know you better as we continue to search for Christ’s message together.

Blessings-Cole Scrogham
