Signature Event Since 2006, to raise awareness of the organization and its programs, the Black Political

Empowerment Project has hosted B-PEP JAZZ, a six hour jazz marathon which features many of

Pittsburgh's very best musicians and vocalists. Join us for what has become the premier

Pittsburgh-based jazz event of each year. This event also allows the organization to raise funds to

help defray the cost of the many fine programs that are offered to the Pittsburgh Region.

About Us

B-PEP, the Black Political Empowerment Project, was launched on May 21, 1986.

B-PEP, the Black Political Empowerment Project, is a nonpartisan community collaborative consisting of agency, organization, and religious leaders, as well as

committed individuals, who seek to build political power and influence for the African

American community:

• By advocating that ALL African Americans are registered to vote and that they “VOTE in EACH and EVERY election!”

• By advocating that those in political office move to expeditiously and effectively meet the needs and aspirations of the African American population they are elected

to serve.

• By continuing to communicate to the African American community the “connection" between a consistent, reliable voting pattern within the Black community and the

goal of realizing the FULL political power potential of the Black vote.

B-PEP is primarily a volunteer organization. B-PEP relies on the dedication of people who donate an incredible number of hours to an organization that they truly believe in

because of its ability to “uplift” our communities by providing “hope” and a sense of purpose.

OUR PROJECTS - Making a Difference in the Pittsburgh Region The GREATER PITTSBURGH COALITION AGAINST VIOLENCE (CAV) was launched by the Black Political

Empowerment Project (B-PEP) and One HOOD on February 8, 2007 in response to a 2007 report that listed Pennsylvania

as leading the nation in homicide rates among African Americans. The Coalition is a broad based and inter-racial coalition

comprised of community and religious leaders, police, and representatives of education, government and concerned

citizens of Allegheny County. B-PEP/CAV has held mega-summits with students from several area Pittsburgh Public

schools and has hosted smaller summits as a follow-up in a few of those same schools. We have set the foundation for

summits which would be co-led by youth based on many of the strategies contained in our CAV documents. We intend to

expand these summits to reach more schools and more students. We also wish to initiate in some of these schools “Social

Justice Clubs” as a way ensuring that some youths remained actively involved in making a difference following the

summits. Our goal is to find partners to help us implement the more than 800 strategies listed in our "Strategies for

Change: Building More Peaceful Communities" document. National Urban League President, Marc Morial, called our

second edition of our CAV document as one of the most comprehensive anti-violence documents in the nation. Local

Urban League President, Esther L. Bush, sent those CAV documents out to all the Urban League Affiliates in the U.S. and

will be sending our recently released third edition as well. Unfortunately, the violence continues, but so does our

commitment to eliminate it! In the third edition we have added additional anti-bullying and internet safety strategies, and

two new sections on “Violence Against Women and Girls” and “Violence Against the LGBTQAI Communities”. With

the financial partnerships of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Pittsburgh Foundation B-PEP/CAV will be in

position to expand our work with area schools, and with community groups and organizations, with the goal of positively

impacting schools and the community in general.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT is covered with our partnership with the Nonprofit Voter Engagement Network and our

nonpartisan voter registration, mobilization and election protection campaigns created to increase voter participation

throughout Metropolitan Pittsburgh. B-PEP is dedicated to expanding the role of the Commonwealth's 501(c)(3)

nonprofit agencies and organizations in non-partisan voting efforts in EACH and EVERY election. In 2016 B-PEP

partnered with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Mayor Peduto’s office and the Pgh. Public Schools in

registering students. Our goal is to urge those who feel un-empowered to have a commitment to help meet their own

needs, aspirations and concerns through a consistently strong voter turnout, and by engaging with local political leaders.

Upon his introduction to the Pittsburgh community B-PEP was privileged to help lead, with other community partners,

three successful community conversations with Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay, and more recently hosted three

additional conversations with the newly appointed Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert. These conversations were

aimed at creating a new level of communication between the community and the police. We also led the move to have the

1996 "You and the Police" brochure revised and to set the stage for distribution of that brochure to area school students

and to the community at large, to help eliminate, inappropriate interactions between citizens, particularly young people,

and the police.

THE CORPORATE EQUITY & INCLUSION ROUNDTABLE (CEIR) was launched by the Black Political

Empowerment Project (B-PEP) in 2012 in response to the fact that in 2010 the Pittsburgh Region was listed as 'dead last'

with regard to racial and economic parity in comparison to 39 other regions in the nation with regard to the conditions of

the Black working poor and the conditions of African American children. It was also noted in a 2012 survey conducted by

the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) that the Pittsburgh area had the second lowest percentage of

minority partners of the 42 cities represented in the survey. The City of Pittsburgh was tied with San Francisco, as nearly

last, 48th out of 50 cities, in terms of the best places for African Americans to live as reported in a Forbes Magazine

article in January 2015. A report from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work, "Pittsburgh's Racial

Demographics 2015 - Differences and Disparities" further supports the fact that much work remains to be done. The

purpose of the Corporate Equity & Inclusion Roundtable (CEIR) is to achieve the highest level possible of inclusion for

African Americans and people of color in employment, in business ownership, and in business development throughout

the Pittsburgh and Southwest Pennsylvania Region. The mission of CEIR is to develop and assist in the implementation

of strategies aimed at overcoming the diversity and inclusion challenges within the corporate sector in Pittsburgh and

Southwestern Pennsylvania, by facilitating collaboration with key partners from educational institutions, community

organizations, workforce development agencies and professional organizations collectively working toward a common

goal of branding the region with a strong and meaningful commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. CEIR is

committed to develop strategies for identifying, recruiting, hiring, developing, promoting and retaining more African

Americans and people of color from entry level to top corporate executive positions. B-PEP and CEIR works closely in

partnership with corporate and key community partners, along with the Allegheny Conference on Community

Development, Mayor Bill Peduto and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald to produce the results we seek. We

have helped to host four annual conferences addressing these challenges. From our efforts have come the annual Minority

Diversity Supplier Fairs led by UPMC, in partnership with other area corporations. The Five Annual CEIR Conference is

scheduled for Monday, June 19, 2017 at the Duquesne University Power Center Ballroom from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm.

THE 'B-PEP COMMUNITY MOMENTS RADIO SHOW' is broadcast on AM 1150, and on line at www.wgbn.net, and

features conversations about issues, concerns and events of interest to the African American community in the Pittsburgh

Region. The show is broadcast each first and fourth Saturday of every month from 12 noon to l pm, and is hosted by

Odell Richardson, Bill Neal and Lois Toni McClendon, who also acts as the show’s producer.

THE B-PEP WEBSITE has been significantly improved in 2016 with the assistance of students from Robert Morris

University, one its Professors, Letrell Crittenden, B-PEP staff and volunteers. We received addition improvements with

the assistance of a Carlow College intern. The website features the work of the Black Political Empowerment Project, the

Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence and the Corporate Equity & Inclusion Roundtable. We have added a

special section for JOBS, TRAINING, and INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNTIES, as well as a much needed COMMUNITY

CALENDAR which will feature various activities and events of interest to the African American community throughout

the Metropolitan Pittsburgh community.
