Those animals that are sucessfully rehomed are in the minority. (Read Caesar’s bittersweet story on page 2.) Far more frequently, hoarding crimes are fatal for the animals. If they do not die at the scene, most are made so ill or “unadoptable” – having gone mad from confinement and deprivation of care – that the most humane option for them is euthanasia. Those that go undiscovered languish for months or years, dying slowly and agonizingly.

Facts on HoardingResearch shows that hoarding knows no boundaries, including those based on age, gender, race, the species involved, or the setting. Hoarders are not merely caring animal lovers who have become overwhelmed. They are individuals with a mental illness or compulsion which can cause criminal behavior with horrific consequences for animals, the hoarders’ families, and their communities.

A hoarder’s behavior ultimately translates into suffering. Animals are essentially imprisoned in filthy, crowded conditions and deprived of basic needs such as sustenance, shelter, socialization, and veterinary care.

Animal hoarding is not something that happens in remote places only to be exposed on graphic reality shows. It happens everywhere, including in our own community. Recently the APF was called upon to help with two situations, one dealing with 19 animals, most of them Chihuahuas, and another with upwards of 60 cats in a Schenectady apartment.

At press time, we are managing the aftermath of the first case. Although the animals were seized by authorities, the owner has not given up ownership, so they are not legally ours to spay or neuter and rehome. Meanwhile we and two of our placement partners are voluntarily sharing the burden of care and expense for these animals while we await permission (hopefully) to find them homes.

We were fortunate that the animals were small, friendly and in overall good health. Had the animals been large, aggressive or ill, we would not have had the space or ability to take them in without subjecting the rest of our animals to the threat of illness. Where would they have gone then?

In the cat case, we assisted by taking in a total of 48 cats. The first animals to be removed from their filthy environment were friendly and adoptable. Most of the others were extremely wary of humans. A high percentage was also feline leukemia positive.

Animal Hoarding: Not a lifestyle choice, but an illness

Animal hoarding is often misunderstood, and law enforce-ment agencies, prosecutors, and judges frequently mishandle or ignore cases, leaving animals in nightmarish situations.

An effective, lasting intervention must include a ban on contact with animals for as long as a state’s laws allow; regular, unannounced home inspections by law enforcement or humane agents; psychiatric counseling; and sometimes a period of incarceration.

It is not enough to remove the animals without severe consequences for the offenders as the relapse rate for animal hoarders is near 100 percent. The old adage is that hoarders have another cat by the time they’re home from the courthouse.

“ They claim to have a special connection with animals, yet they are totally indifferent to their suffering.”

Hoarder Characteristicsl Hoarders amass a large

number of animals l Hoarders fail to provide for

animals’ most basic physical and social needs, including food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and clean living conditions

l Hoarders offer excuses for or deny the abysmal living conditions of their animals

Common Living Conditionsl Confinement of animals to tiny cagesl No exercise or socializationl Accumulated feces and urine with

ammonia levels which can burn skin, eyes, and lungs

l Flea, mite, and worm infestationsl Outbreaks of contagious illnesses,

including upper respiratory infections, mange, and parvovirus

l Food and water are usually inadequate if provided at all, leaving animals to suffer from malnourishment and dehydration

Caesar’s StoryThe following is a letter from Tamara Miller, who adopted one of the “Pumpkin Patch Cats.” This was a group of 28 orange and white cats brought to us after their owner was evicted. Many had ear deformities due to chronic ear mite infestation.

In September 2010, I met one of the cutest, kindest, gentlest and funniest cats I have ever had the great opportunity to welcome into my home. He was one of the 28 Pumpkin Patch Cats. I named him Caesar after the speech by Mark Antony in Julius Caesar – “Friends, Romans, country-men, lend me your ears” – because of the bad scarring from many prior ear infections that went untreated by his previous owner and left his ears flat against his head. He joined my other two cats and two dogs and instantly became each of their favorites to play with, sleep with, cuddle with, and get in trouble with. Over the next 20 months he developed bladder infections that were always treated successfully, regardless of the cost. He got another one in April and seemed to recover, only to become listless and lose his appetite. I was told he had a critical blockage that would require a long hospital stay, with a high probability of not making it, and if he somehow did, the certainty that it would occur again. Permanent kidney dam-age was also certain. I made the very difficult decision to release him from his pain. He will always be my precious boy, and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the work you do for the animals. When the time is right, I will once again visit to give another cat a “forever home.” I’m just so sorry that forever for Caesar was not nearly long enough.

WE’vE GONE HOME!

While Caesar found a loving home, his life was cut short by the neglect of a hoarder.

Tails by Twilight a Magical NightOur 2nd Annual Tails by Twilight, a dedicated fundraiser for our Community Spay/Neuter Program, was held in May. This year’s net proceeds were over $130,000! We were truly overwhelmed by the show of support for this program, which will enable us to provide low-cost services to reach so many more animals. More than $400,000 has been raised toward construction of the new clinic. Total construction, equipment and start-up costs are estimated at $1,000,000.
