Thank you for your continuing gift to our parish.

St. Raphael Discretionary Fund

The Thanksgiving Day collection will be used for the Discretionary Fund. This fund is used at the discretion of Fr. Tim for unexpected emergencies of the needy. Envelopes are available in the Gathering Area on the counter near the bookracks and also in the Parish Of-fice.

Oplatki

Oplatki are available in the Gathering Area or in the Parish Office. An envelope of 4 wafers s $2.00.

For centuries on Christmas Eve, families in Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech and Slav Republics have practiced the breaking and sharing of Oplatki: Christmas Wafers.

Oplatki are enjoyed by families, typically prior to the Christmas Eve meal. Generally, the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can be for health, prosperity, or joy in the new year. This is a special way to celebrate our loved ones.

Adopt-A-Family Program

Thank you for your overwhelming support of our pro-gram! As of Monday 11/15, all families have been adopted from our list. What a great testament to the love and generosity of our parish!

If you were unable to sign up, but would still like to par-ticipate, monetary donations are greatly appreciated. We usually have a few families come to us last minute. Monetary donations can be mailed or dropped off at the Parish Office or dropped in an offertory contribution basket at weekend Masses. Checks should be made out to “St. Raphael Church” with “Adopt-A-Family” or “Social Concerns Ministry” in the memo line. You can also utilize the online giving portal on the parish web-site by choosing the “Social Concerns Ministry” fund.

A beautiful way to begin your Thanksgiving celebration is by gathering around the Lord’s table with your parish family to thank Him for the blessings He has given us. Join us for Mass at 9:15am on Thanksgiving Day.

Please Note: the Parish Office will be closed on Thurs-day, November 25th and Friday, November 26th. It will also close at 5pm on Wednesday, November 24th. The office will resume regular hours on Saturday, November 27th.

Parish School of Religion St. Raphael School

PSR classes for Grades 1-8 WILL BE HELD as usual the weeks of November 22nd and 29th. We do not take a Thanksgiving Break. There is a lot to do as we thank God for His blessings and begin to prepare for Advent!

PSR Confessions take place for Grades 3-8 this week in preparation for Advent and Christmas. All PSR students in Grades 1-8 should report to class at their regular time. Home School Religion families are welcome

to join us for confessions on Monday, November 22nd between 6:45-7:45pm or Tuesday, Nov. 23rd from 4:30 to 5:30pm.

PRESCHOOL RELIGION There will be NO class next Sunday, November 28th to allow our families to attend Mass together wherever they are traveling over the Thanksgiving weekend. Classes will resume on Sunday, December 5th when we will be celebrating the Feast of Saint Nicholas and continue practicing for our Christ-mas pageant. Remember parents: Preschool Religion classes begin at 9:45am each week - fifteen minutes prior to Mass.

The SRS Academic Team competed in the Science Classroom of Champions at St. Edward High School, scoring an impressive 94 points! Congratulations on a great showing!

On October 27th, student leaders from St. Raphael School went to St. Albert the Great School to participate in a “Leading with Kindness” con-

ference. The students were asked to think about being called a leader vs. acting as a leader. During the day, the students shared their faith and excitement in be-coming a leader in their school and community. They created a list of their roadblocks and reflected on how to overcome them. They participated in team-building activities and ended the day creating mission state-ments and setting goals to bring back to our school to help drive change and outreach throughout the year.

"One Step closer to Christmas" As we look toward Advent, the children in our Parish School of Religion in Grades 1-8 sup-port Saint Raphael’s Adopt-A-Family program by doing acts

of kindness and bringing in monetary donations. In our One Step closer to Christmas collection, the money raised by each grade will help to purchase gifts for a child their own age in the Adopt-A-Family Program. Fam-ilies may send in donations of coins and dollars to PSR classes the weeks of November 22 & 29th and Decem-ber 6th.

This year's PSR theme is A Step Toward Sainthood. Just like Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, eve-rything we do should bring us closer to Jesus! We hope our students learn that this Advent activity is so much more than collecting money! Rather than giving some-thing up for Advent, we are encouraging everyone to prepare for the celebration of Jesus' birth this Christ-mas by being a blessing to others! As you prepare for the holidays, remember that even Mary and Joseph took one step at a time!

“I have come to set the world on fire, and how I wish that it were already ablaze.”

-Luke 12:49

“Be who you were meant to be, and you will set the world on fire.”

-Saint Catherine of Siena

Please Keep in Your Prayers the 22 teenagers and adults who are attending the National Catholic Youth Conference this weekend in Indianapolis. We are able to bring such a large group on this pilgrimage because of your amazing generosity as a parish taking stock in

our youth. Please pray that the Spirit leads us into deeper encounter with the Lord through the liturgies,

speakers, workshops, prayer opportunities, and through our community with one another this week. Thank you

so much for all you do and all you are for Saint Raphael!

The theme of NCYC is ABLAZE! So please pray that we might catch the fire of the Holy Spirit and set the world on fire with our love for Jesus Christ and His Church!

There is NO Insight Night this week due to NCYC… We’ll all be (hopefully) catching up on some much needed sleep. However, we ARE back right after Thanksgiving

with Insight Night | The Moment on December 5th from 7-9pm in the Upper Room. See you there! Gobble

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” -Proverbs 29:18

Pay [some] attention to the Man behind the Curtain… As this year progresses and we continue our growth in

ministry, I want to keep you involved in some of the behind-the-scenes work of HSM.

Our focus this Fall Season of Youth Ministry has been on multiplying our blessings and keeping the strong

enthusiasm we had in the Spring and Summer as we progress to the “post-COVID” or “new normal”. A reality

of our situation is that we compete with sports and extracurriculars and homework, but what we really

desire is to be a place of peace and support that helps teens grow as whole persons. The last thing we want is

to be one more activity filling up the family calendar.

As we go forward this Winter and into our Spring Season, look out for social and service events (like Monsters Hockey on 12/27) aimed at inviting new

teens into HSM and strengthening relationships among our regulars. We have not done many because of the

restrictions the past year-and-a-half, but they are excellent (and fun) opportunities to grow together and

to serve the people of God.

Thank you, as always, for your prayers and support! I am extremely pleased with the community we are

building in Youth Ministry and we desperately need your prayers as we discern what God is calling us to next.

Thank you!

Parish Ministry News

Catholic Charities 2021 Appeal

Thanks to the generosity of 419 parishioners at St. Raphael Parish, we have exceeded our parish goal by raising $250,619 for the Annual Appeal! We’re thrilled that we reached 118.36% of our goal, but that does not mean the Appeal is over. Every day, Catholic Charities sees an increase in requests for services and programs that are proven to transform lives. The need continues and we hope your support will also continue. Together, we can make a difference.

If you have not yet made a gift to the Annual Appeal, please visit CatholicCommunity.org/Donate, text CCHOPE to 41444, or call 216-696-6525, extension 1910. We are so grateful for all who faithfully support the works of Catholic Charities in Northeast Ohio.

Advent Evening of Reflection

Come enjoy this special evening with us on Tuesday, November 30. Mass begins at 6pm in the church with a light meal immediately following in the Community Room. A free will donation will be accepted at the door. Reflections will be provided by Fr. Jim Winings, Parochi-al Vicar at St. Raphael Parish. Seating is limited, so make your reservation soon! RSVP by Friday, November 26th. Please contact Pat Dubiel: 440-829-9727 or [email protected]

Pro-Life Ministry

The First Friday Prayer Hour for Life has resumed. Please note the new time is from 6pm to 7pm. We meet in the Franciscan Chapel on the first Friday of the month. We will be meeting on Friday, December 3rd to pray for life. The right to life is the premier issue of our times. Without life, no other issue can matter. Killing the unborn is just the beginning of doing away with those who are deemed unworthy of living such as the elderly, sickly, handicapped, and those not holding with the beliefs of the ruling class. Please join us in praying for those who cannot pray for themselves.

Groups pray at area abortion clinics weekly: Preterm, on Shaker Blvd in Cleveland, on Tuesdays at noon and Sat-urdays at 12:30pm; Planned Parenthood, on Center Ridge Rd in Rocky River, on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesdays at 9:30am and Saturdays at 10:30am; and Planned Parenthood, on the corner of Brookpark and Broadview Rds in Cleveland, on Saturdays at 10:30am. Please call Judy for more information: 440-892-0270.

Gifts for Nursing Home Residents

Please help The Guild spread Christmas Spirit by giving a practical gift to a nursing home resident who has no family or few friends. Our parish provides pastoral sup-port for Catholic residents at Westbrook Place. Let’s spread Christmas Cheer even more this year! To give a gift, please call Anne Straitiff at 440-871-2298 or email her at [email protected]. Gift ideas will be emailed to you. The gifts MUST be dropped to Anne’s home, not to church, by December 15th. Thanks so much for your generosity!

Poinsettia Sale

The Guild is holding one of its Annual Scholarship fund-raisers to help you decorate for Christmas! Come to the Lunchroom to see the beautiful selection of flowers and wreaths from our local vendor, Uncle John’s Plant Farm, after all Masses the weekend of December 4 & 5. We will be accepting credit cards.

We will also be ordering small red poinsettias to be de-livered to Westbrook Place residents during Advent. Cost: $10 for two small plants. If you wish to participate in sending some cheer to a senior resident: mail or drop off your donation check payable to St. Raphael Guild at the Parish Office (525 Dover Center Rd., Bay Village, OH 44140) by December 4th. Please mark your envelope “Poinsettia Sale.”

Eucharistic Adoration The opportunity to draw close to our Lord in the pres-ence of the Holy Eucharist takes place in the Francis-can Chapel on Fridays from 10:00am to 7:00pm. Please note that occasionally Adoration will need to cease for an hour or two (or move into the church) if the chapel is needed for weddings or other functions. All are welcome to come on Fridays, for a short visit or for as long as you wish!

Altar Server Ministry I

Leaving a Legacy

Legacy Society members express their gratitude for all God’s blessings and thankfulness for St. Raphael Par-ish by making a ‘legacy’ gift through a will, trust or ben-eficiary designation. Through such donations, Legacy Society members provide witness to the importance of preserving our Catholic faith tradition and supporting our Parish for the benefit of future generations. Funds received from planned legacy donations, unless re-stricted for a specific purpose, are intended for the un-restricted long-term financial goals of the parish, as determined by the pastor. Legacy gifts allow St. Rapha-el Parish to prepare confidently for the future, while parishioners’ thoughtful generosity leads to the crea-tion of a robust Saint Raphael Legacy Society. If you have created (or hope to create in the future) such a Planned Gift, the parish would like to recognize you as a member of the “Legacy Society.” To learn more, please contact Kris McGivney at the Parish Office (440-871-1100) or via email at [email protected].

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry has shawls available for those in need. If you or someone you know could be comforted by one of our shawls, they are available in the Parish Office. Members of our ministry have made each one prayerfully with blessings knitted into each one. There is no charge for the shawls.
