    About the Cover Icon

he feast of our Lords Nativity in the flesh celebratesthe great gift of new life and rebirth from God. Marygives birth to the Son of God, and Joseph gives himthe name Jesus, a name that communicates the

Childs divine vocation: to save Gods people from their sins(Matt 1:21). In taking our flesh, He is called Emmanuel (Matt1:23). His holiness is with us. All things are filled with His

glory and His righteousness. God becomes man to offer eter-nal salvation to allto those already seeking the righteous-ness of God and to those lost in darkness.

St. Matthews Gospel is read in the Matins service aswell as in the Divine Liturgy of the Feast. At the Matins ser-vice, the Gospel (1:18-25) tells of the miraculous birth of thechild Jesus and his adoption by Marys husband, Joseph. Inthat passage, Joseph is described not only as Marys husband, but as a just man. St. Matthew also explains how Joseph re-solves to divorce Mary to save her fromshame.

and her husband Joseph, being ajust man and unwilling to put her to

shame, resolved to divorce her qui-etly. (Matt 1:19)But an angel of the Lord inter-

venes, appearing to Joseph in a dream, and guides him on a different path. Theangel of the Lord refers to Joseph notmerely as the husband of Mary, but asa son of David:

But as he considered this, be-hold, an angel of the Lord appeared tohim in a dream, saying, Joseph, son ofDavid, do not fear to take Mary yourwife, for that which is conceived in heris of the Holy Spirit (Matt 1:20)

This change in Joseph invitesour reflection as we near the celebration of thisgreat feast day.

Joseph is a just man who is led to under-stand Marys pregnancy as shameful. Her preg-nancy will bring hardship and disgrace, and he pre-pares to divorce Mary in order to spare her public accusationand trial. Joseph shows kindness and care toward Marythekindness and care of a righteous and just man. This righteous-ness of Joseph is grounded in compassion and mercy.

As long as Joseph understands his vocation as beingnarrowly limited by earthly obligations, matters of marriage, and public shame, his sense of righteousness leads him to

believe that dissolution of the social, legal, and practical ar-rangement of the marriagea quiet divorceis the best pos-sible solution. With this narrowly conceived vocation, onethat is rooted in what the evangelist Matthew identifies ashusband, Josephs choices and behavior make sense to us.Even in the most difficult of family and social circumstances, all of us can find the resolve to follow through with hardchoices in a way that is respectful and compassionate to oth-ers, even to those with whom we are locked in strong dis-agreement and conflict. In the midst of turmoil of our lives,we are able to demonstrate love and charity toward otherswhen we are guided by our sense of righteousness.

But when Josephs vocation is clarified by the anin his dream, his calling is elevated beyond earthly limits agives way to a heavenly nature. He is Joseph, son of DavidHe is a servant of the Lord. He is strengthened to turn awfrom his fear, to abandon his narrow righteousness, and to the unexpected: Joseph takes Mary as his wife. He is longer merely a man navigating the arrangements of a m

riage and a divorce. We now know him as one belongingthe genealogy that opens St. Matthews Gospel, the geneogy that reveals Gods hand at work in human affairs. Andis important for us to understand that one belongs to this gnealogy, the lineage of Abraham, not through legal and blogical links or through personal righteousness, but becauGod is with us. And we respond to Gods presence with faihumility, and obedience.

The angel of the Lord reveals to Joseph that Marbeing with child is not a source of shaand that taking her as his wife is nsomething to be feared. What Joseunderstood to be bad is, in fact, goo

That which is conceived in Mary is the Holy Spirit and is from God. Thwhich was thought to be shameful, holy.

How often we forget that belong to God. So often we allow oselves to be guided by fear and shamTime and time again we allow fear take hold of our heart in the face of traedy and injustice. In times of trouble, depend on our own righteous resourcto lead us through. But God shows H

presence and glory to us in the wosome realities of our lives. He offers u

righteousness far beyond our own whwe accept that we are sons of David. We are pof the divine genealogy. The truth behind the tro

bled realities of our lives is that we belong to Gand God is with us.

An angel of the Lord, the messenger Gods holy intervention, breaks into the human realm areveals to Joseph the limits of his righteousness. This rigeousness seeks to spare Mary shame, but on its own is nsufficient to discern what is true and good and holy. On own, his righteousness, while allowing Joseph to yield to twill of God, is still rooted in shame and lacking in couragHis righteousness alone will neither fulfill the prophecies n

follow the will of God. The liturgical texts of the feast cebrate Josephs encounter with the angel and his persuasionthe angel to change his course of action:

Tell us, Joseph, how is it that thou bringest to Bethlehegreat with child, the Maiden whom thou hast receivfrom the sanctuary? I have searched the prophets, sahe, and have been warned by an angel; and I am pe

suaded that Mary shall give birth to God, in ways spassing all interpretation. Magi from the east shall coto worship Him with precious gifts. O Lord, who for o

sake hast taken flesh: glory to Thee-Christmas Eve, the Third Hour

his year we Ukrainians conclude the Jubilee YearCommemorating the 1025th anniversary of the Baptismof our ancestors in the River Dnipro by the GrandPrince, St. Volodymyr the Great, the Equal-to-the-Apostles. Because of this dramatic and blessed event, our people were illuminated by the light of Jesus Christand His Word penetrated their hearts.

Pope Francis states in his Encyclical Letter, Lu-men Fidei: The light of Faith: this is how the Churchstradition speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus. TheHoly Father continues by quoting St. Johns Gospelwhere Christ says of Himself: I have come as Light

into the world, that whoever believes in Me may notremain in darkness (Jn. 12:46).

That darkness was shattered by the appearanceof a bright star followed by the Wise Men from theEast. We are able to celebrate anew the great mysteryof our faith the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ because we inherited this faith from our ancestors. Andwhat a mysterious and magnificent faith this is. TheSon of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, took on flesh anddwelt among us. Jesus became man so that all of us canbecome children of God, inheritors of the Kingdom ofHeaven, partakers of His glory.

All of this is beyond our ability to comprehend. It is astonishing that Almighty God became an infantfor our salvation. The Word of God went through thewhole process of conception and birth for us (by thepower of the Holy Spirit He was born of the VirginMary, and became man Nicene Creed).

This good news was announced to the shep-herds. Together with them we are filled with wonder asthe heavenly angelic host praises God and sings,Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace onearth to those who enjoy His favor rests (Lk. 2:14).

The Gospel passage continues, the shepherds returnglorifying and praising God for all they had heard aseen, in accord with what had been told them (L2:20). In one of our Christmas carols we sing: O HoNight, the stars are brightly shining, this is the nightthe dear Saviors birth. As with our ancestors, now are not alone. God is with us. Entering into our worJesus, the Messiah, affects our every movement, every action, our every aspiration, in fact our very land destiny. The Incarnation, God-becoming-man, is an illusion. It makes sense. Through Him all thincame to be, not one thing had its being but through Hi

All that came to be had life in Him (Jn. 1:3-4).Christmas is such an obvious opportunity for

newal. This past Year of Faith urged us to rediscoand renew our relationships with Christ that was givenus in Baptism. By virtue of our Baptism we are all calto share the good news with others, to evangeliwhether it is in our home in the example of prayer awitness we give, or perhaps at work, or in different ganizations, both religious and secular. In some ways are all given situations in which God is calling us to wness our faith.

1025 years ago, our ancestors were enlighten

by Christ and His good news. This blessed gift thpassed on to us. Now, let us pass it on to others. Letrejoice on this great feast of the Nativity of our Lord alet us be grateful to Jesus for being born for our salvtion. Christ is bornlet us glorify Him!

We wish all of you a truly grace-filled Christmand a very blessed and prosperous New Year.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the loveGod the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spiritwith all of you!

    HISBEATITUDELUBOMYRCALLEDUKRAINIANSTOWORKANDPRAY

Patriarch Emeritus Lubomyr (Huzar)made a speech to millions of Ukrainians, who were on Independence Square inKiev and told Ukrainians a proverb: Work

as if everything depends on you, and pray to theLord as if everything depends on him

    P

He welcomed "warmly" everybody on the IndependenceSquare and all the streets of Ukraine and the world.

"It is clear to all of us, who assembled here, that Ukraineneeds a big change. Maybe someone asks you where thosechanges come from? Maybe someone will give them to us orfight for them? No. These major changes, which we desire, be-cause our country and the people truly need them, must be wonby ourselves", - the spiritual leader said.

Appealing to people His Beatitude remembered a proverb, which he heard first in North America, and later - in differentstates, among other nations, and more recently in Ukraine.

"This saying is simple, but has a profound meaning : workas if everything depends on you and pray to the Lord , as if every-thing depends on him ," - said the spokesman .

He said that for younger generation to work means, firstof all, to know what the normal state is. And for the older genera-tions - to make a profound analysis of the situation, to understandwhat to do.

"When we work, we understand what we want" - he says. The second part of the proverb - pray as if everything de-

pends on God. "Our prayer is not a request to God to changesomething. We pray to God to ask him to realize the things thatbelong to us from time immemorial. Prayer is a request for Godto accomplish that he established when we started to be an inde-pendent nation. Pray to God is of critical importance for us. Wecomprehend nothing without a prayer "- said the Patriarch Emeri-tus.

"So Dear community, I want to beg you ... not only I butalso the initiative group" First of December : work as if every-thing depends on us, let us pray like everything depends on theLord - called His Beatitude.

    Pastoral Letter

t the voice of the angel, calling to the shepherds

in the dark of night, let usnow hasten to the poor sta-

    ble in Bethlehem. Here we

see in the Blessed VirginMarys arms the Son ofGod, who came into ourworld as a man. Togetherwith them, let us rejoice andmarvel; let us sing and con-template the living and trueGod, whoborn in a human

bodygives Himself intohuman hands as a small, gentle and defencelesschild.

Our Saviours Na-tivity reveals the depths ofDivine life as well as thetruth about man. Hewhotoday appears in humanfleshexisted before thecreation of the world, foras God before all agesHeis eternally and immacu-lately born of the Father as ason! This is the ineffableand incomprehensible mys-tery of Jesus Christs divinesonship which today is re-vealed and preached to all

mankind. This feast makesthe divine sonship accessi-

ble for all through the proc-lamation that God the Fa-ther loves us as his sons anddaughters. In His new-bornSon, we experience todayour nearness to God. Weexperience the same warm,

powerful, real and life-giving intimacy which is theFathers intimate affection

    for His first-born.Gazing into the

faces of the Divine Childand His Mother Mary, let usgrasp the truth the Nativityteaches us about our human-ity and of His humanity, which is a sign of Gods

presence: And this will bea sign for you: you will finda babe wrapped in swad-dling cloths and lying in amanger (Lk 2:12). Thischildthe God of Israel,Whoin the fullness oftimewas born bodily froma Virgin without seed. He

bestows upon Joseph theBetrothed, the wonderfulrole of guardian. At the Na-tivity of Christ, we receive

the Eternal God in our ownform. For people rightlydesire to be cared for andhere in Bethlehem, Godhimselfas a childis theone caring for the humanfamily!

Humanenessas asense of and respect for thesanctity of human lifeis amoving and saving pathalong whichon this mys-terious nightthe Son ofGod, the Son of Mary, comes to our homes, to ourfamilies, to our nation. Andthis divine-humanitytheGod-Manhood of IncarnateSon of Godgives us aChristmas path to follow inorder to love God andneighbour. By celebratingChristmas with travellersand the homeless, or in soli-darity with those who aredespised and whose dignityis denied, we, Christians, as

true guardians and evangel-ists of Gods presenceamong us, make our world, our society more humaneand dignified for man him-self.

The birth of the Sonof God, the Eternal Word ofthe Father, reveals alongwith the greatness and gloryof our God, the Creator andSaviour, the greatness and

glory of man as the crownof all creation. In His Incar-nation, God reveals the spe-cial dignity of man, becauseHe is incarnated in itthatis to say, in his own image.St. Irenaeus of Lyon says:When the Word was made

flesh He Himself becamewhat His image was mak-ing man like the invisibleFather through the visibleWord (Adv. Haer., 5, 16,2).

Glorifying the dig-nity of the human person,Christs Church today singsout: Let us cry out toChrist-God: Holy are You,O Lord, Who fortified ourstrength! Just as the com-

ing to earth of the Son ofGod through the Incarnationbecame the centre of worldhistory, similarly the dignityof the human person is the

foundation for a true andindeed humane society. TheChurch teaches that socialinstitutions and their leadersmust respect each human

person and their prime dutyis to promote the holisticgrowth of each person. The

person can never be a meanfor the realization of eco-nomic, social or politicalagendas imposed by secularauthorities. Rather govern-ments must be vigilantwhen placing restrictions onfreedoms or burdens on a

persons private life tonever harm human dignity(Compendium of the SocialDoctrine of the Church, 131-133).

There is no futurefor a society in which manis demeaned. The dignity ofthe human person is thesource for just laws and eq-

uitable social order. For inthe human person the tem-

poral and eternal, the divineand human, are united. Hu-manity is the door to eter-nity opened on ChristmasDay by the Son of Godshumanity. So celebratingthe Nativity means to keepopen the doors of our hearts

    To the Son,eternally and

    immaculately bornof the Father,

    Whoin the fullnessof timewas born

    bodily, without

seed, from a Virgin,Let us cry out toChrist-God: Holyare You, O Lord,Who fortified our

    strength!

to human dignity, especiallyof the weak and defenceless,as was the Divine ChildHimself in the arms of theVirgin Mary.

Today once againUkrainian society is strivingto build its future on the

foundation of the Christianfaith. The new-born Saviouris the fulfilment of thehopes of all mankind for thecoming of Gods king-doma kingdom of justice,

peace and goodness. Thebirth of the eternal King ofPeace was announced by theangel, when he said to theshepherds: Be not afraid;for behold, I bring you goodnews of great joy which will

come to all people; for toyou is born this day in thecity of David a Saviour (Lk2:10-11). This historic mo-ment is important to us, forthe word of the Evangelist

proclaims that Christ Him-self is the source of our joyand the end of our fears! Inthe Nativity of Christ, mayour anxiety be transformedinto hope, may confusionand uncertainty be directedalong the path that leads to

the place of our Lordsbirth. On this ChristmasDay, when, according to theapostle Paul, the power ofGod was made manifest inhuman weakness (cf. II Cor.12:9), our sense of power-lessness is turned into a re-alization of our self-worth.Through the action of theHoly Spirit, this realizationof our self-worth becomes aforce that will enable us to

build a society worthy ofman. That is why today weglorify the power of the di-vine-humanity, singing:Holy are You, O Lord,Who fortified our strength!

Dearly beloved inChrist! On this joyous feastday of Christs Nativity, Iwish all of you my sincerestgreetings. I wish for yougoodness and peace, har-

mony and health. I desire toknock on the door of everyUkrainian family! With thesound of ancient carols, Iwish to cheer every Ukrain-ian heart! Announcing thegreat joy of our Saviours

birth, I want to gatheraround Bethlehems stableall of our churchboth inUkraine and abroadintoone community of God!

Today let us feellike one Christian family in

which our Saviour is born.Along the path of humanityand Christian solidarity, wecan touch all who defendtheir own dignity, the dig-nity of their family and theirnation! Let us share ourChristmas joy with thosewho are far from home, inhospital beds or prison

bunks. Together, guided bythe light of the star, let usmake haste towards our

neighbours in order to see inthe fleshthe InvisibleOne; in His povertytheSource of all goodness; inHis weaknessthe Al-mighty, as the new-bornChrist-God in the embraceof the Theotokos.
