Greetings from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia

As part of its agenda, NKF on 4 August 2019 held its 15th Patient Forum in Muar Johor. In line with the talk, health screening and counselling sessions were made available to the participants at the Forum and the populace in and around the area.

In promoting our activities we had to raise funds to pay for the costs of dialysis treatment for poor patients at our twenty-eight dialysis centres and the operations of the Foundation as a whole.

The bulk of this funding since our inception in 1969 had been made possible with the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) granting tax-exemption on donations made to us. However, events took a turn when IRB audited us for the first time in 50 years and found infringements of the Income Tax Act leading to us losing our tax exempt status on 29 August 2019. As the IRB audit revealed all the funds in NKF were used for the objectives of the Foundation, we are seeking the services of a tax consultant to ensure compliance with the guidelines of the Income Tax Act.

Meanwhile, we went ahead with our celebrations for our 50th Anniversary which had been planned before the IRB decision with a small-scale dinner on 18 October 2019 at the Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur.

The dinner celebrations were graced by Tan Sri Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman, the President of the NKF Board of Governors and Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad Mohd Zaher, the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. The highlights of the night were the honouring of the pioneers and long serving staff of NKF as well as patients dialysing at the Foundation for 20 years and more.

In the midst of the dinner, news of NKF being one of the four organisations awarded the Code of Good Governance by the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS) on 12 October 2019 brought cheers and cleared greatly any air of negative thoughts associated with the decision of the IRB. This is especially so as ROS had evaluated NKF on its performances in fulfilling its role and aims while maintaining the quality of control, efficiency, transparency and integrity.

In the light of the events, we sincerely pray and hope that the IRB after deliberating our follow-up remedial action will be sympathetic towards lessening the financial burden faced by the many poor.

NKF’s 15th Patient Forum

On 4 August 2019, NKF held its 15th Annual Patient Forum entitled “Improving the Quality of Your Life” in Muar, Johor.

425 people were at the Forum. In officiating the Forum, Dr. Lee Wan Tin, the Member of NKF’s Board of Directors mentioned, “NKF has established the Patient Forum to provide patients and their caregivers with information and advice that they need in one platform. Through this Forum, we hope to safeguard the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of the patients.”

Dr Yia Hua Jern in his ‘Numbers in Dialysis– What Patients Should Pay Attention To?’ highlighted the important health markers to determine the

effectiveness of dialysis treatment from the perspective of haemoglobin, calcium, phosphate, and potassium levels in the body.

On the other hand, Dr Tan Li Ping in presenting ‘The Role of Patient in Caring for Fistula’ talked on the care for fistulas to maintain optimal blood flow for dialysis treatment, while Dr Nor Fadhlina Zakaria spoke about ‘Kidney Transplant and Organ Allocation’ as an option to treat End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).

In dealing with ‘Eating Healthy’ NKF dietician, Ms Kher Pui Ling, provided the patients and caregivers with insights on how to make good food choices. Dr Lily Mushahar in her presentation ‘Sexual

Dysfunction among Dialysis Patients’ pointed out that dialysis patients can still enjoy a vibrant marriage and healthy physical relationship with their spouses. In rounding up, Dr Tye Li Loon provided insights on ‘Improving Quality of Life through Dialysis Treatment’.

Muhammad Tasnim Azfar Bin Ahmad Tajuddin is a 26 year old single currently dialysing at Pusat Dialisis NKF- Kelab Lions Alor Star (Alor Setar).

In September 2016, he was diagnosed with kidney failure by the Langgar Health Clinic in Kedah and could still go about like any normal person.

However, within a year his kidney condition deteriorated and he had to be admitted to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah Alor Setar where it was confirmed that he had to undergo dialysis. He opted for haemodialyisis which the hospital could only temporarily provide since it was

deluged with patients in need of dialysis. In his search for a dialysis centre, he

finally landed in Pusat Dialisis NKF – Kelab Lions Alor Star (Alor Setar) in September 2017 following the recommendation of a medical officer at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah Alor Setar.

He started his dialysis at 3 sessions per week with each session lasting 4 hours and in the process was often exhausted at the end of each treatment. With such a condition, he was initially unable to work but over time he was able to manage well despite his health conditions. With his health improving with dialysis by

2019 the Centre Manager, Sister Ang Bee Moy, was able to recommend him to Pertubuhan THB Soup Kitchen to work as an assistant cook in the preparation and serving of food to needy people. On top of this, given his interest in playing the guitar as a hobby, he would often travel to Penang during the weekends to entertain crowds in outlets thereby earning himself some money.

Now that he has been doing chores for some time without glitches, we wish Muhammad Tasnim Azfar Bin Ahmad Tajuddin all the best in his endeavours.

NKF had come up with a new campaign “’50 Pledgers In 5 Hours’ Challenge &

Keep Your Kidneys Fighting Fit” to promote organ donation & kidney

awareness at University of Malaya, Management & Science University &

Sunway University. In conjunction with the NKF 50th Anniversary, 3 teams of

NKF sta� and volunteer students had conducted organ donation awareness

campaigns to get at least 50 new pledgers at each location in 5 hours!

Kuala Lumpur, 18 October 2019 – In conjunction with its 50th anniversary this year, the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) paid homage to patients who were aided by the organisation, together with nurses and staff who have served at NKF’s dialysis centres located throughout the country.

In a simple yet meaningful celebration at the Royal Lake Club, Kuala Lumpur, NKF, Malaysia’s leading non-profit dialysis treatment provider, honoured its pioneers and long-serving staff.

Aptly themed “A Golden Journey”, the anniversary celebration was attended by Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman, President of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia; Y. Bhg Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad Mohd Zaher, Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, Members of the Board of Governors and Board of Directors, former and existing NKF staff, patients as well as donors.

“Since our inception in 1969, NKF has grown tremendously and reached such a great num-ber of patients, thanks to the unwavering support of various government bodies and agencies, countless other organisations and individuals. This has enabled us to expand our role from be-ing just a dialysis treatment pro-vider, to becoming a one-stop national resource centre for all kidney-related matters. Our tireless efforts to fight kidney-re-lated disease have also been rec-ognised through the Code of Good Governance which was recently awarded to NKF by the Registry of Societies Malaysia,” said Dato’ Dr Zaki Morad, Chairman of NKF Board of Directors.

“Now that we have achieved the endorsement by the Ministry of Health for all our centres, the MQA Accreditation of our Training Centre, and MSQH for several dialysis

centres, our patients can be assured of consistent high quality service,” said Dato’ Dr Zaki.

Annually, NKF needs RM24.9 million to subsidise the dialysis treatment costs for its 1,700 patients who seek treatment at its 28 dialysis centres nationwide.

“It is no easy feat to raise such a huge sum but through the generosity and overwhelming backing from various organisations, as well as donations from members of the public, grants and various forms of financial support we have received, NKF is able to subsidise the treatment cost for the patients on dialysis,” he said.

The organisation is on the forefront of promoting public awareness of kidney disease and its treatment, while striving to raise the standards of care it provides to patients with kidney failure and those who are suffering from various kidney-related illnesses.

Currently, regular health talks, public forums, health screening and counselling sessions are conducted in various cities and towns across Malaysia to educate the community on early detection and prevention of kidney failure. In recent times, these included NKF’s #SihatBersama and #GreenWednesday social media campaign, which were launched in support of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to promote healthy living amongst Malaysians as well as educating the public on organ donation and organ transplantation.

To date, NKF has screened about 600,000 Malaysians for early signs of kidney disease, including the Orang Asli community. Over the next few years, NKF will be channelling more resources – including using social media plat-forms – to promote kidney health and prevention of kidney failure.

One of the NKF pioneers honoured at the event was Shirley Koh, its

former Fundraising Head. Recalling her journey, she said: “Now, with NKF’s good work known to many more people, I hope the organisation will continue to receive strong financial support and hopefully, in due time, NKF will be able to provide free dialysis treatment to all needy dialysis patients.”

Another pioneer in the NKF family is its Jalan Hang Lekiu Centre Manager, Jayarani D/O Savarimuthu. She said: “Seeing NKF centres across the country brings a deep sense of appreciation of the efforts of every single person that made NKF what it is today”. Dialysis patient at NKF-Calvary Cheras Centre, Chin Yoke Kian, who suffers from kidney failure as a result of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) said: “Thank God for NKF, as I am unemployed. The fees are affordable.”

Meanwhile, Josbir Singh S/O Keher Singh who undergoes dialysis at NKF – Apex Centre in Klang said: “I am proud to be with NKF. December 2018, marked my 22 years of dialysis. Whenever the doctor comes, he will advise on how to take care of my health as a dialysis patient.”

Similarly, another NKF patient, Hafsah Hajar who regularly receives dialysis treatment at Charis Centre in Cheras cited a short period when she was required to go through dialysis in the Kepong centre. “Although I was not their (Kepong) patient, the nurses treated me well and equally as other patients.”

According to Dato’ Dr Zaki, as NKF continues to serve kidney patients in need across the nation, the organisation remains in need of long-term financial support for its efforts, given that the country has 40,000 individuals on dialysis with more than 7,000 new patients every year.
