One of the teachings of Pesach is that everything we do as individuals reverberates upon the entire community. One the one hand, Pesach is the paradigmatic communal celebration of the Jewish people. It followed the first mitzvah given to us as a people (to observe the new month of Nissan) and the public festival marked our coming

together as a nation in relationship with God in Egypt. On the other hand, in the Torah the proper observance of Pesach hinges on the observance of the proper mitzvot in the individual homes of the Israelites.

The teaching in Pirkei Avot, al tifrosh min hatzibor, "do not separate yourself from the community," is of primary importance. More than an ethical obligation to serve the community, this teaching recognizes the existential importance of togetherness for the Jewish community. As individuals our lives have little meaning. It is only in the context of being part of something bigger that the meaning and purpose of our lives comes into relief.

Everything hinges on this realization. The society around us does not grant importance to this fundamental truth. It speaks of individual liberties and the pursuit of individual happiness. For Jews such things may establish a baseline for political functioning, but they are antithetical to the moral and spiritual aim of Jewish life.

This year's shpiel was full of excitment and drama!

Our sages taught us, “When the month of Adar enters, we increase joy.”

By the time these comments are published, the month of Adar will be past. Purim will be behind us, winter weather over, and Pesach at hand.

Looking back on the past few months, our congregation has many reasons to be joyful and thankful. The Sisterhood’s Hamantashen bake sale was an event to marvel. Once a year, an army of volunteers from within and outside the congregation come together in an exquisitely orchestrated dance of mixing, filing, baking, packaging and delivery. It’s a crystallization of Adam Smith’s “division of labor” come to fruition in our kitchen and social hall. It is a unique, shared communal experience not to be found anywhere else. This is Shaarie Torah at its best.

Our Purim Shpiel this year managed to surpass last year’s high levels of artistic creativity and participant enthusiasm. More than 250 people registered for the event. As I commented in a thank-you letter to the event organizers:

“Our in-house musical talent continues to up its game, making CST’s Purim program a signature event in the Portland Jewish community.”

Again none of this would be possible without or dedicated volunteers and staff. So thanks to Rabbi Rose, Gary, Dorice, Eleyna, Ilana, the Sisterhood, the Men’s Club and the cast members of the “CST Purim Prom."Our next big event is the upcoming Michael Allen Harrison concert on April 29th. This is our first community-wide fundraising event in a decade. Michael is generously donating his time and talent for his first ever concert at Shaarie Torah. Oregon Jewish Life is featuring an interview with Michael in its April issue. We have already received $5,000 in individual concert sponsorships, with a goal of $15,000 - $20,000 pledged prior to any ticket sales. Concert, sponsorship, and ticket sale information are already up on the Shaarie Torah website. Check out the website, purchase some tickets, and join us for an incredible musical performance with Michael at the keyboard of his one-of-kind Bosendorfer piano.

PRESIDENT'S COMMENTSPeter Lyman, President

I’d like to turn now to recent Board matters. In my last column I noted that "… the Board is undertaking an introspective and thoughtful review of Board and Committee functions. We will be utilizing the pro-bono services of a non-profit organizational consultant to assist us in this process which will culminate in a one-day Board retreat," which occurred last month. It was an open, frank, and respectful discussion of the appropriate roles of the Board, Rabbi, Executive Director and staff. This represents a start in what we all acknowledge will be a lengthy process that won’t be completed in a few months. We’ve taken a first step, but much needs to be done. A committee was tasked to draw up a list of next-steps and to schedule a follow up meeting. Two recent Board vacancies have been filled. I’d like to thank Phil Newman and Matthew Dubrow for their service on the Board, and welcome our two new members, Rebecca Dake and Sarah Staggs. We are fortunate to attract such talented and energetic individuals to our Board. Welcome, Rebecca and Sarah! As we get closer to end of our fiscal year, I’d like to remind us all of the importance of keeping current with our dues and pledge obligations. Dues are pledges are the financial bedrock of our operations. We cannot attain an end-of-year balanced budget without every congregant being current with their commitments to Shaarie Torah.May we carry over the joyful emotions of Purim into Pesach, as we transition from a holiday that celebrates the survival of one particular Jewish community to one that chronicles the redemption and freedom of an entire nation.

On behalf of the Shaarie Torah Board, I wish all our congregants a joyful, healthy, and kosher Pesach.

This year we are here, next year we will be in the Land of Israel. This year we are slaves, next year we will be free.

Next year in Jerusalem.

Peter

If you had to ask yourself, or your family, or your friends, what do we know about

Israel’s history, what would you tell yourself ? Golda Meir? Ben Gurion? Would you dare go farther back? The different Aliyot? OK, how about going way, way back, to the very beginning? That ’s what Shaarie Torah’s

Wednesday night school will do this month. We will cover from Abraham to Zionism in a very short time. One lesson (that ’s all we have)! Could you do it? Do you even want to? And why does it matter for us to do it today, tomorrow, or ever?

As we sit here in America, in our comfortable homes, working in our respective occupations, not hiding the fact that we are Jews, knowing that Israel is a reality, we forget that it was not always like this. Our youth realizes that what we take for granted today was a privilege and a miracle that happened against many odds. The fact that our land was captured and handed over 36 times in the last 3,000 years from one empire to another is astonishing. From Assyrians to Babylonian to Persian and Romans to Crusaders and Mamelukes — the fact that Judaism survived and the Jewish people still exist is a fact that cannot be taken for granted.

Rabbi Danny Gordis’ visit to Portland a few years ago just brought it home when he posed the question, “would Israel survived to the year 2048?”. The answer he had, with which I agree, is: Yes, it would, if we, as Jews, understand the importance of the concept of peoplehood. That to have Israel, we need to understand that even as our opinions are varied regarding what Israel does, or should be doing - our responsibility is to support our state, to understand that without this state, we would go back to the victim mentality (“what would they do to us now?”). Instead, we keep out heads up, we attend seminars, and we advocate for Israel, even if we do not agree with everything that the state is doing.

Still, just think about all that Israel does that is good! Human rights, democracy, higher education, innovative economy, to name just a few. Not to have Israel will also mean to discard much of what the Torah is teaching us — about Avraham going to

the land that God will show him; about Joshua fighting to inhabit the land; about Kind David establishing Jerusalem as his capital; about King Solomon building the

Temple on top of Mt. Moriah where the Evan Shtia (the foundation stone) exists. Even though Eretz Israel is important to the three main religions, in Judaism we connect our most happy occasions (wedding, for example) with the saddest event in Jewish history connected to the land of Israel (the destruction of the temple). We pray toward Jerusalem. We yearn to go and visit this holy land. We know that it belongs to us. Now, here comes the big task: what we know as adults, we must pass on to our youth. If they do not know, understand or feel the importance of Israel, we may lose our most precious collective possession.

B’vracha,With Blessings

shipped about 131 dozen all over the country.

I want to give BIG THANK YOU to the 113 volunteers and many donors who helped bake Hamentaschen. Words cannot say how wonderful it was to see so many of you helping to make Hamentaschen a success again this year. May we all be together again next year in the kitchen! Lynne & Mitch Cohen are a wonderful example of how generations of families maintain connections at Shaarie Torah and how our synagogue is

an important part of their own family history and traditions.Mitch grew up in Portland and was raised at Shaarie Torah. His great-grandparents, Nathan and Fannie Kaplon, and grandparents, Isadore Harry Kaplon and Sophie Kaplon, were all longtime members, as were numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. During his childhood

in the 1950s and 1960s Mitch’s parents, Sandy and Thelma Cohen, were very active in synagogue affairs; Sandy, in the “Brotherhood” (later the Men’s Club), while Thelma served for years as financial secretary of the Sisterhood. Mitch’s Bris – Mar. 23, 1951. Dr.

Max Himmelfarb (left), watches carefully while Rabbi Joseph Fain of Cong. Shaarie Torah performs the honors.Lynne was raised in the Washington DC., area, which is where Mitch and Lynne met and in 1973 and were

married. After their wedding, Mitch and Lynne moved about the country while Mitch finished school. Soon after their second child was born in 1983 they returned to Portland and joined Shaarie Torah as a family, where both their children attended religious school and celebrated their B’nai Mitzvahs. Little known fact: Their son Bennett recited the same Haftorah reading as did Mitch on his own Bar Mitzvah at CST 30 yrs earlier, with Rabbi Yonah Geller z"l officiating both.Later, after living away from Portland, Mitch reconnected with old friends he had grown up with, including Isaac Tevet, whose wife, Charlotte (née Burda), had herself grown up at Shaarie Torah. Isaac and Charlotte have a son, Avi, who, like Mitch and Lynne’s daughter, Kelli, attended religious school at Shaarie Torah. Since the two children were a couple of years apart in age, they knew each other only slightly as children. However, that changed when, after graduating college they met again at a Shaarie Torah Shabbat event and, a year later, were married at CST! Lynne says Shaarie Torah is so meaningful to her because it continues a long family tradition of participating in the synagogue and connecting with the Jewish community. The Cohens are now imparting that spirit to their own grandchildren, 6-year old Sofia and 2-year old Lilly, and to their youngest, 1 1/2 year old Eloise (who lives in California with her parents Bennett & Anya). Eloise and her family came to Portland last year for her baby naming, conducted by Rabbi Rose.Mitch and Lynne find real joy in attending services and celebrations with their children and grandchildren, and relating the stories and traditions they have experienced as part of the Shaarie Torah family to younger generations. Recently while their granddaughter Sofia was playing with the fringe on Mitch’s tallit, he shared with her how he used to do the same thing as a young boy while sitting in the sanctuary next to his own grandfather. Now that’s stitching family memories together! As long-time members of Shaarie Torah, Mitch and Lynne Cohen are invested in sustaining the traditions and the camaraderie they have found here over many years. They are finding real joy in meeting new members and seeing our congregation grow and thrive as new families join and create new memories. They see Shaarie Torah as an integral part of the Portland Jewish community, and are lead donors in the Transition Campaign that is filling a budget gap as Shaarie Torah develops new revenue sources and grows its membership.Thank you, Mitch and Lynne, for sharing your story and supporting Shaarie Torah in the past, present and future.

Michael Allen Harrison playing at his show "Ten Grands" at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

A Benefit for Shaarie Torah on Sunday, April 29, 6:30 pm

Beloved Portland composer, pianist and philanthropist Michael Allen Harrison will present an inspired program of Jewish and spiritual music featuring special guest artists, here at our shul on Sunday, April 29th at 6:30 pm.

Known for his signature classical, contemporary style, Michael’s piano solo performances and recordings have made him a legend on the local music scene for decades. The brother of Shaarie Torah’s administrator, Linda Harrison, Michael has graciously offered to donate his services to support our fundraising efforts.

An exceptionally diverse musician, Michael is well known for jazz performances at Jimmy Mak’s, December concerts at The Old Church, and his annual “Ten Grands” sell-out concert — which raises funds for his Snowman Foundation’s efforts to promote music education to young Portlanders, through its “Play It Forward” program.

Michael started the Snowman Foundation in 1999, raising nearly $3 million to fill the gap in music left by a lack of

funds in the Portland schools. With the motto, “Music education for all — no strings attached,” the Foundation provides the instruments, instructors and inspiration that kids need to develop musically. “Play It Forward” is now developing a scholarship fund that will cover music lessons as well. So, on April 29th, prepare to be transported to a magical, musical world that stirs your soul and uplifts your heart - with the masterful Michael Allen Harrison and talented local guest artists.

VIP tickets for An Intimate Evening with Michael Allen Harrison are $72 and include preferred seating plus a special pre-concert reception with Michael, champagne and hors d’oeuvres. General admission tickets are $36. You can purchase seats at www.shaarietorah.org/mah or by calling 503-226-6131.

We hope to see you there!

UPCOMING B'NAI MITZVAHMAZEL TOV!

Hi! My name is Moselle Dake. I am the daughter of Bliss and Rebecca Dake and older sister to Brahm and Raphaela. I’m a 7th-grader at Beaumont Middle School. I am very excited for my Bat Mitzvah as well as my Mitzvah project, which will raise money and toys for kids who are in the hospital with cancer. I can't wait to get started and I look forward to seeing you around the synagogue or at my Bat Mitzvah.

Gili was born in Haifa, Israel. When we moved to the U.S. she was only 3 months old, but she is very much a "Sabra": spiky on the outside but sweet on the inside. Gili loves the outdoors and is never afraid of a little rain or mud. She is becoming a really good snowboarder (it's becoming harder to keep up with her on the slopes). She loves to go off trail in between the trees where the snow is untamed. When she's not flying through the snow, Gili spends time laughing and fighting with her older sister, they have a very strong bond. However, no one, not even Roni, is allowed on her perfectly made, symmetrically folded, meticulously straightened bed. One of the funniest things about Gili is her imitations of accents (British, Australian, etc.). We're not sure where this talent comes from as we're all just Hebrew speakers. When she grows up, Gili wants to live in London so she can put her British accent to good use.

Hi. I'm Evan Horwitz. I go to Portland Jewish Academy. I was born in Chicago and moved to Portland in 2012 with my mom (Melissa), dad (Daron), and brothers Gabriel and Zachary. I love to read, play sports, and hang out with my friends. The Bar Mitzvah has been one of the most important parts of Judaism for many generations. It represents a boy taking on the responsibilities of an adult. Though some of the meaning of a Bar Mitzvah is now different than it was before, it has always been — and always will be — one of the most powerful traditions in Judaism. The Bar Mitzvah should not be the end of a Jewish boy's connection with Judaism, but the beginning of it. I look forward to having my Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Shaarie Torah and becoming a full member of the Jewish community.

On March 1st, we began charging the public to park in our parking lot. We will not be charging members, but we are requesting that members follow some new procedures detailed below. Members should have received a letter with a code that allows them to park for free. If you did not receive a member code, please contact our office. Thank you to the many members who are now following this new system! The need for this change comes from the increasing demand for parking spaces on our surrounding streets. We often have people park in our lot who are not our members. We also have members of Alano Club, our neighbor, park in our parking lot with our permission. We receive a modest rent from Alano Club. These situations were in place before the City of Portland installed parking meters along nearby numbered streets. Since that time, the usage of our parking lot has grown, and essentially we have been giving away a valuable resource. Recently the City of Portland eased restrictions on operating a parking lot such as ours. That has allowed us an opportunity to enter into an arrangement with a commercial parking lot company to install a pay station that now allow us to charge people to park. We also are entering into a new arrangement with Alano Club to receive a considerably higher rent. The combined potential new income to us is approximately $20,000 per year. Once again, let us emphasize that CST members won't pay for parking. You just need to request a free parking receipt

from the pay station each time you park and display it in your car window, just as you do on many of the streets of Portland. Members have been sent the code. You will not need to utilize the pay station at all on erev Shabbat, Shabbat mornings, erev Festivals and Festival mornings. On those occasions may simply park as you presently do. We will share High Holy Day parking information later in the year. You may be aware that we operate our own Carl Preschool, and that we rent space to Pipster Prep Preschool. We have responsibilities to provide parking to them as well. As a result, the management of our parking lot is complicated. That is why your cooperation in requesting a free receipt from the pay station and displaying it in your window every time you park (except as noted above) is critical to our success. The parking management company will monitor our lot throughout the day and will place a violation notice and request for payment on vehicles that do not have a valid receipt for that day and time. They have legal options to collect this debt. If you receive a violation, you may turn the notice into our office and we will have it voided. However, if this happens often, the financial arrangement we have with the parking management company may have to be renegotiated at less-favorable terms to Shaarie Torah. Thank you for your cooperation!

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT OUR PARKING LOT We appreciate your consideration of this ongoing change.
