O n 9 September 2016 Botes & Kennedy celebrated its 35th birth-

day , truly remarkable accomplishment and we thank everyone past &

present for their contribution to make this a reputable construction

company. I know that the future holds a diversity of exciting opportuni-

ties for Botes & Kennedy and that we can confidently conquer the chal-

lenges due to our sound past.

Our business systems are of essence to realise our aspirations to remain

sustainable, this was highlighted at the Engineers and Site Agent Meet-

ing held in Durbanville on 29 August 2016. The value that our systems

add were re-iterated and I know that everyone benefited by this gather-

ing and exchange of ideas. On 20 August 2016 we held our annual B&KM

Blommeland Golf day in support of the Springbok Golf Club. This was

once again a wonderful day, enjoyed by all, even in the absence of the

characteristic Namakwaland flowers. We thank Kalla and his team for

arranging the day and look forward to

next year’s event.

We have recently been joined by

Jeann van Tonder, Amu NyalunguJaco,

Grove , Wim-Piet van Wyk, Monique

van der Merwe, Simba Pasuva and

Paul Nero and welcome them and

their families at B&KM.

Thank you for your continues support

and contributions.

Kind regards

Deon

WAT E R

S I SHEN

M INE Greetings again to all

my colleagues and friends.

I almost want to start the same as I started last time…but the year is al-most up so I almost want to say “Merry Christmas!”

So, we are back in Sishen again. We received the

order at the beginning of August for the Priority water project. It con-sists out of four sections. The Eastern Sump, Western Sump, 350mm Pipeline and 600mm Pipeline. The main pur-pose of the contract is to recycle the storm water from the mine, back into the community as well as the plant.

Our Site establishment were finished in mid September and at this stage we are only busy with the clear & grub and stripping of topsoil.

By October the real ac-tion will start with blast-ing & excavation. For those of you who have

worked on Sishen Mine will know that to do blasting on this mine is a hell of a lot of issues and paperwork.

The past few months you all must have seen the Photos of our new colleagues but I would like to use this oppor-tunity to give all the new members a warm Botes & Kennedy Manyano welcome.

We are really looking forward to walking a long path with all of you.

Regards,

Matthys Stone

wag wag nou... Nie Weskaap nie,

DIE Weskus te gaan werk nie. Land

van kreef en snoek!

Koeberg is so +/- 45min se ry uit

Durbanville, waar BKM se satelliet

kantoor gelee is. Ons Namakwalan-

ders sien mos woorde soos Vaal-

puts, Koeberg, Kernkrag en uraan

goeters as vloek woorde, juis om daar

“rumours” loop dat die besigheid jou

”manhood” kan weg vat onder ande-

re. In elke val, B&KM het die beson-

derse voorreg gekry om op Koeberg,

die enigste Kernkrag aanleg in Afrika,

‘n kontrak los te slaan. Kyk, op skool

het jy mos te doen gehad met hoe r

graad en standaard graad. Nou hier

bestaan net een standaard, reg of weg

is my afkorting daarvoor. Die kultuur

hier is om van dag 1 af reg te werk en

foute te elimineer nog voor dit kop

uitsteek.

Outage

is ‘n tipe “shutdown” om herstelwerk

en instandhouding te beoefen op die

kragsentrale. Ons by B&KM, met ons

hoe veiligheid en kwaliteit van werk,

“gel” natuurlik lekker in met die Es-

kom manne, juis omdat Eskom se

veiligheid en kwaliteit standaard so

hoog is en internasionaal herken

word, m.a.w ons staan terug vir nie-

mand! Die kontrak is ‘n “design and

construct” tipe kontrak, wat maar sy

uitdagings het, maar niks wat nie

deur ons professionele span kan uit-

sorteer word nie. Ons het ons span

so plaaslik moontlik probeer hou en

met Mnr Swartbooi aan die stuur van

sake wat “onboarding” betref kon

ons die “language barier” oor die

hand slaan, dus moes ou Frits som-

mer lekker hoog begin praat. Ons

moes JP se tande bewerk net sodat hy

kon inpas.

On a serious note, we are privilege

to be working here as it just

shows our commitment and

professionalism towards our trade

and that we belong with the big

boys out there. We had our ups

and downs over the years, forget

them, and focus on the future. The

future lies with us and only you

can determine your own attitude

and mind-set.

Works have started to con-

struct the bridge widening

of the existing 12 span

simply supported bridge

over the Orange River.

The works is sequenced to

happen in 3 phases:

Phase 1

- construction of the cause-

way, northern abutment

and piers 11 up to pier 6.

Phase 2

- the construction of the

access, pier 5 & 4 as well as

the decks for span 12 up to

span 6

Phase 3

- entails the construction of

the access, southern abut-

ment, piers 1 to pier 3 and

the remainder of the deck

spans.

To date the B&KM Team

lead by Jeann van Tonder

have completed the estab-

lishment, constructing the

causeway from the North-

ern Abutment up to pier 5

and the platform required

for the piling. They are cur-

rently excavating the bases

for pier 11 to 6 and rock

breaking as to key into the

rock bed to construct the

foundation for the piers.

The piling contractor have

been established and drilled

their test holes to complete

the piling methodology.

The first piles will be placed

early October 2016.

The team is highly motiva-

ted and this positive energy

can be seen in the way the

works are dealt with. They

will start construction of the

Northern Abutment, as well

as pier 11 to pier 9, in Octo-

ber 2016.

We will keep you updated

on the progress and wish

them success with construc-

tion of this impressive

structure.

THE TEAM

by Jaco Overbeek

To build a road of this magnitude is a challenge of its own as for us this comes not as a natural contract. The contract consists of the following: Felling and disposing of 74 big trees , from blue-gum

to Pine trees. Removal of Topsoil. Box cut to road bed level. Storm water pipes , manholes and catch-pits Road layer works Black top – pre mix Kerbs Sub soil drains Telkom sleeves and other sleeves Traffic Light systems Road Lighting Road Signage and marking Re allocation of existing services Traffic Management (Big challenge at the intersection

with existing roads)

From Botswana Bush to Durbanville , Cape Town ( 1100

km north from my home to 1100 South of my home).

The biggest thing to get use to is the traffic to work , all

these vehicles is a hazard that needs to be aware off!

It is a honour to be awarded for your hard work, we at the Husab finishing

works have received a certificate for 50 000 LTI free hours and I would

like to thank the management team on the project because without their

backing we would not have achieved this, but most importantly I must

thank the workers the men and women in the field, THANK YOU.

We had a get together on 17 September 2016 where management spon-

sored a braai and a soccer match. I would like to congratulate the

Swakopmund all-stars captained by the kind of his own domain (Bongani

Mahlangu) on their 2 – 1 win against Ettiennes’s 11 captained by Etienne

Brander.

We are half way through the project and looking forward for the next

50 000 LTI free hours, we can only achieve this by working as a team and

committing to follow the OHS rules and regulations and continuing with “I

am my brother’s keeper” attitude.

Congratulations,

Op 12 Mei 2016 kry ons die werk by

Swakop Uranium. Die projek behels pad-

bou en stormwaterkanale. Kyk, vir my

was dit nou n uitdaging om vanaf

“concrete” na grondwerke te skuif, maar

as jy vir Botes & Kennedy werk moet jy

Soos elke ander terrein is

As you will notice in the table to the

left and the graph below is that our

property damage is extremely high

as was the case in the previous

financial year, it not only affects our

safety statistics but it also has

major financial impacts.

Every damage to property re-

quires repairs and /or replace-

ment and these do not happen free

of charge. Each and every one of

us can make a difference just by

being vigilant on site, ensuring all

procedures are fol-

lowed, and just by taking a

moment to assess each situation

on merit.

We are half way through

our financial year, and I

would like to take this

opportunity to highlight

some important statis-

tics for all to take into

consideration.

We had a difficult first

half of the financial year

and is reflected as such

in the statistics, with

the unfortunate fatal in-

cident, some lost time

cases and a high number

of property damages.

This however is not all

doom and gloom as we

have the ability to

change this around and

our targets and objec-

tives can still be

reached through hard

work.

It is in everyone ’s inter-

est to have a positive

mind-set towards safe-

ty. I am a firm believer

that a positive mind-set

will produce positive

results. This however

needs to be everybody ’s

attitude it is of no use if

one or two employees

have the right mind-set

but there is twenty

working against them.

Let us start believing

that:

“I CAN MAKE

A

DIFFERENCE”

We also started recording leading indicators which is obtained from the weekly safety officer

inspections and monthly reports. These reports are not only a legal requirement but pro-

vides valuable information to management on areas which needs improvement or attention.

With this said, I would like to urge everybody to support the safety officers on site with these

reports, and not to see it as something negative. These inspections (Daily, Weekly and

Monthly) are there to assist operations to comply with legislation and site specific standards,

these will also assist in reducing our incident rates if taken seriously. Some areas to be taken

seriously are as follows:

Unsafe Acts

Leading indicator – PPE Not Used & Guards not Used

Unsafe Conditions

Leading indicator – Poor Housekeeping

System Deficiencies

Leading Indicator – Hazards not identified

To conclude on a positive note, I would like to take the

opportunity to congratulate the Husab team on their

recent 50 000 hour LTI free achievement. This is not

an isolated case, I can also mention the Slimes dam

project which ended injury free, Kolomela DMS pro-

ject is busy finishing up - also injury free, and the list

goes on. This just shows that a good Health and Safety

record is possible with hard work and dedication.

’n Tydjie gelede het ek so gevoel.

witeit sodat ek elke moontlike hindernisse

Christus.

Amen.
