He rocks in the treetop all day long, hopping and a bopping and a singing his song, all the little birds on Jay-Bird street, love to hear the Robin go tweet,

tweet, tweet!

As a kids, we all enjoyed singing that song. Even as an adult, I still enjoy waking up in the morning to robins singing outside, and watching them hop around in

the garden collecting worms.

Their cheerful nests lead to adorable squeaking baby robins, as you watch the mother feed her young. Robins give the glowing tweet, tweet, tweet to spring

that we all love and remember.

A festive spring and summer decoration for cakes?

It doesn't get more fun that putting little birds on a cake. With gum paste, it is very easy to create an adorable bird that will leave a memorable impression on

your family.

Even better, get the kids involved in making these little bird. Being creative is so much fun at any age, from five to 85. Cake decorating with kids makes for family

fun time, memorable experiences, and artistic results.

To make a gum paste bird you will need:

A circular drinking glass with a thin rim

A cookie cutter that is flower or star shaped

Gum Paste

Food coloring

A rolling pin

A work surface

Waxed paper

Select a couple of colors of gum paste. I like orange and brown in honor of the Robin, but of course there are so many beautiful birds out there, it can be fun to

add a few different varieties to the top of your cake.

Roll out the gum paste and use the glass to cut out the body of the gum paste bird into the shape of a circle. Allow the body to rest flat. Make your bird on a

sheet of waxed paper so that he can be dried and applied to the cake later.

Or, if you already have the cake made, you can apply the bird piece-by-piece to the top of the cake to make sure that his delicate legs do not break.

For the tail, use a flower or star shaped cookie cutter. Slice in half, and attach to either the left or right side of your circle.

Using remaining scraps from star or flower cut-out, make wings and put in the center of the circular body pointing toward the tail.

Roll out long pieces of gum paste dough to form legs. Then, do the same for a beak. Use a toothpick dipped in food coloring for the eye.

A variation: you can cut out part of the circular body, and replace with a different color, to make the breast of the bird a different color.
