Message from the President and Diocesan Director

“He must open his arms to protect all of God’s people and embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom Matthew lists in the final judgment on love: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison.” (Pope Francis, Inaugural Homily)

These eloquent words from Pope Francis clearly define the priorities and work of Catholic Charities. Since 1945 Catholic Charities has had a presence in the Diocese of St Augustine, responding to the needs of the poor, serving the most vulnerable, marginalized and disenfranchised individuals in our communities. As our mission states we provide services to anyone in need regardless of race, religion, ethnic and socioeconomic background.

Today the Catholic Charities network has four regional offices located in: Gainesville, Jacksonville, Lake City and St. Augustine. Although the services may vary from site to site, the goal of our programs in each office and satellite location is to respond to the unique needs in the communities we serve. It is our Catholic identity and Catholic Social Teaching that calls upon us to see Jesus in the faces of the poor.

As you review the following pages of our 2012 Annual Report it is our hope you will witness Catholic Charities Putting Compassion into Action. We are committed to Catholic Charities being a place where Jesus Christ is known, loved and served on a daily basis in all our locations.

As an agency and leadership team we are committed to being excellent stewards of the resources we have been blessed to receive. Eighty three cents ($.83) of every dollar we obtain directly supports our programs and services. 100% of grant and foundation funding, donations and proceeds from special events remain in our local communities.

Catholic Charities could not be responsive to our communities without the work of our staff, volunteers and board of directors and the support we receive from our donors and funders. Together we are living our responsibility to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Mark 12:31). Thank you for all your support to our agency and the clients we serve. May God bless you and those you love.

In charity for all,

Most Reverend Felipe J. Estevez, S.T.D.Bishop of St. Augustine

“ Wherever I’ve come across people suffering and dying, I’ve also found Catholic Charities right there standing alongside them, ministering and soothing, helping and healing, without regard for self. Every one of them a shining towering example of sacrifice and selflessness. Let’s make that what people think of when they think of the Catholic Church in America”

foodFOOD ASSISTANCE SERVICES: “ In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for one in six people in the United States, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.

Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. They are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. “ (Hunger in America 2011 – Feeding America )

Florida Hunger Statistics • Total food insecurity rate (availability of food and one’s access to it): 17 percent • Total number of food-insecure people: 3.1 million • Total child food-insecurity rate: 28 percent • Total number of children who are food insecure: 1.1 million • Florida was fifth among seven states that exhibited statistically significant higher household

food insecurity rates than the U.S. national average, Food Insecurity in the United States • Nearly 49 million people in the U.S. are food insecure, about one in six Americans. • 16 million children are food insecure, more than one in five children. (Feeding America 2013)

FlORIDA GATEwAy FOOD BANk Working Together to Fight Hunger

“ We would like to thank Catholic Charities for supporting our food pantry. Since our emergency food pantry started two-and-a-half years ago, we have reached a point of supporting over 80 families a month. Since in an average Sunday-morning service we don’t have anywhere near eighty families in attendance, you can see our need for the services of the food bank. With the donations of our church congregation, the supplies of the food bank and God’s help we have never had to reduce the food given to our receiving families. — Sincerely, Ronald Bullinger, Director- Emergency food pantry, O’Brien Baptist Church.”

983,767 Pounds of food were distributed by our Florida Gateway Food Bank to 44 agencies feeding the poor and hungry in our local communities.

FOOD PANTRIES For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food

“ I always worked and provided for my family, then a crises came and I realized one day that I have no food to put on the table. I never thought I will not be able to feed my family, and I was ashamed to ask for help. Caring staff at Catholic Charities treated me with respect and dignity and helped me. I want to thank all of you for being there for us; I don’t know where I would be without your help.” — Client

103, 211 Bags of food were given out, and 37,390 individuals were assisted with food.

“We don’t have a car, and where we live we don’t have a place to go for help, so when we ran out of food it was truly scary. But good people from Catholic Charities not only brought food to us but also brought with them other agencies providing help! What a miracle, I cannot say thank you enough!” — Client

5, 891 Individuals were served during the past year. Our program brought food and services to the most impoverished rural counties in our diocesan area. The food and other resources that we offer through our rural mobile outreach provide temporary relief and teaches clients to make better nutritional choices.

“ To me this agency means there IS a place to go when you are in a time of need. I assist those that have no homes, are close to losing their homes, are hungry or even in need of medical assistance. The range of assistance varies, but it is wide, and the need is great. It humbles me as well as rewards my soul to be able to help a family or individual regain hope that “It Isn’t Over Yet.” There are resources out there, and I am here to help them reach them. It is an honor to be a member of an organization that puts Compassion Into Action.”
