In the last issue of Waukeelog, awards given out by WSPS to various members were discussed. Now there is an opportunity to discuss awards we recently received from USPS and from District 20. These were given out at the District 20 Spring Conference on 14-16 March at
The Abbey in Fontana, Wisconsin.
From our national organization, WSPS received two Distinctive Com-municator awards in recognition of distinctive performance for
USPS squadron publications and for squadron websites. Our newslet-ter, Waukeelog, and the WSPS website were given these awards.
Thanks to Kathy Levine our past editor of Waukeelog for keeping Waukeelog a top notch newsletter. On the website, thanks to Seaby
Bess for his work the last few year on postings to the website and to Jeff Geltz for his webmaster duties redesigning the site. Also thanks to all the other WSPS members who contributed articles to Waukeelog
and helped get the word out on our website and Facebook about our
activities.
The other award WSPS received was from District 20. It is the Illumina-tion Award and is given to a squadron that leads the way in
achievement and success. It is nice to be a member of a squadron that sets an example for other squadrons in the District. D/C Canfield men-tioned that key factors in selecting this award included hosting a well run and exciting D20 Cruise and Rendezvous last August, WSPS member participation as District officers, chairs and other supporting roles, taking a lead role on modernizing the District website and creat-ing a consistent template for other squadron websites and our aggres-sive schedule of seminars and course offerings. (The District is using our own WSPS website as a model for its and all D20 squadrons web-sites.) A picture of the award is in the Waukeelog and I happen to be
the Commander around to accept it for WSPS. The award is a real live functioning sextant mounted on a base and there is a temptation to de-
tach it and start taking sites like we did in the USPS Navigation Class!

I keep kicking myself, why didn't I take Cruise Planning this year? Unfortunately, it's too late, the class is finished, and the exams are graded! Ken and Anne Miller have taught Cruise Planning for many years and WSPS Students always finish the class in awe of the adventure and experience the pair gathered during their 10 years circumnavi-gating the globe. I know I speak for everyone when I say "THANK YOU KEN & ANNE" for your generosity in opening your home and sharing your knowledge year after year! Spring has arrived.....April Fools! So, in lieu of launching your boat onto the ice in your marina (you know who you are!), here's a quick recap of the upcoming Seminars/Classes/Events to keep you busy: Heavy Weather Sailing, Tues 1 April (it's no joke), 1900 at
Waukegan Yacht Club (dinner available at 1800). Junior Navigation, Wed 2 April, 1900 at Brunswick. Larsen Marine Open House, Sat 5 April, 1000-1600 at Larsen
Marine. Take advantage of free seminars and come visit the WSPS table and brush up on your knots and hitches! WSPS Social Dinner & General Meeting, Sat 12 Apr, 1800 at Traditions at Glen Flora, Waukegan (see page 17 for details) ABC's of Boating Seminar, Sun 27 Apr, 0900 at WHYC. Wine & Knots Seminar, Fri 16 May, 2000-2130 at WHYC. Flair Shoot (so much fun!), Sat 17 May, 1100-1230 at Waukegan
Harbor (south breakwall). Rules of the Road Seminar, Sat 24 May, 1000 at WHYC.
Memorial Day with the Navy, Mon 26 May, 1000-1300 at Great
Lakes Harbor. See you on the Lake (eventually)! Kathy

Wishing our Members a
Happy Birthday!
It is a beautiful sunny day in July on Lake Michigan. You hop in your boat with friends and take off for a sail… you are a few miles out having a great time when all of a sud-den Mother Nature intervenes and you are in the middle of a squall. In the chaos, there is a loud crash from below and you appear to be taking on water from who knows where… Your hand-held VHF (and only VHF) has slipped over-board, but you can just see a boat in the distance. So as the well trained boater you are, you pull out your non-expired flares, and proceed to read the directions wishing
all the while for your readers...
Don’t let this be YOU!
National Safe Boating Week is May 17-24 this year. To kick off the week we will be hosting our annual FLARE SHOOT on May 17th starting at 11AM. We will start with a demonstration by WSPS’s Bill Strauss and Rosanne Turow. Please plan to attend along with your expired flares…let the first time you shoot off a flare be educational and in a controlled situation, not an emergency. If you have participated in the past, please consider this a refresher. With his kind permission, below is a link to an article on emergency flare use written by Mario Vittone who has an extensive Navy and Coast Guard resume. The publication touches on when to shoot off a flare given the approximate bearing of another vessel, daytime, nighttime, distance,
cautions, etc..
http://gcaptain.com/flares-meets-eye/
The Coast Guard has a great publication called “A Boater’s Guide to the Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats And Safety Tips.” It is a booklet that contains
information on the minimum federal safety equipment re-quirements, a Quick Reference Chart, sample Float Plan and Pre-Departure Checklist, safety tips, and additional
safety equipment recommendations. Note the link below:

A cold and snowy winter has finally ended, and now many of us are thinking about commissioning our boats for the 2014 season. When I think about getting my boat ready for another season, I frequently talk to members of our squadron about how to best address projects on my to-do list. Fellow WSPS members can be a great source for advice about boating maintenance, com-missioning and upgrading. A good venue for such discussions will be the cocktail hour at our April 12 Dinner Meeting. Come
and join us for wine, beer, soft drinks and dinner. There will be no cost for the dinner and drinks. All we ask is that you bring a dish to pass. The location for this event will be the Traditions at
Glen Flora Clubhouse, 201 Traditions Drive in Waukegan.
Our featured speaker for the evening will be Captain Pete Thompson, of TowBoat US. For more information, see the
announcement later in this newsletter. Please let me know that
you will be attending and what dish you plan on bringing.
Another event that we hope you will attend is the annual Memo-rial Day with the Navy at Great Lakes Marina . This is a
shakedown cruise for our squadron combined with a military-style Memorial Day service to which WSPS has been invited. You can arrive at the Great Lakes harbor by boat or car. If the weather is not good, the event will be held in the harbor building, but more often than not the ceremony has been conducted out-doors. Find a more complete description of this event later in this
newsletter.
We have several other cruises planned for this summer including the District 20 Cruise and Rendezvous to Chicago and our annu-
al cruise to Racine at the end of the season. Details of the sum-
mer cruises will be announced later.

EDITOR
Maureen Lilleeng, AP
Greetings, WSPS members! This edition of Waukeelog is my first attempt at filling some very big shoes—Kathy LeVine has handed over its production to me, your newbie WSPS member-at-large and editor. I have been a member of WSPS for two years now, and along the way have been both inspired and humbled by the all of the experience and passion for confident, safe boating that WSPS members gladly share with others. I’m a sailor and a power boater (ask my husband, Mike, about that) and got involved to build my confidence and skills and advocate for safety on the water. The bonus is that I’ve met so many wonderful people and made new friends! You’ll see that there are many opportunities to enhance your boating knowledge and skills through WSPS membership and have lots of fun and camaraderie, too. There’s still time to sign up or attend April and May events, and be sure to consider taking a course or attending a seminar along the way. Please send your comments, boat and event photos, stories, and boating lore for possible inclusion in future Waukeelogs. And did you know that you can advertise your business or sell your boat or equip-ment FREE on Waukeelog? Check out pages 18 and 19 for current ads and business offerings from WSPS members. Send info to me via email at [email protected]. Next deadline is May 20. Like you, I’m looking forward to a fun and exciting boating season, minus the icebergs! Maureen
One of the speakers at the Conference was Jerome Knocel, Associate Editor of Great Lakes Boating Magazine, which focuses on things hap-
pening on the Great Lakes affecting boaters. It’s complimentary and distributed to most all harbors and marinas on the Great Lakes. Je-rome discussed the Great Lakes Restorative Initiative (GLRI), a feder-
al program which supports efforts including cleaning up toxic pollution, restoring fish and wildlife habitat and fighting invasive species. See the GLRI site http://greatlakesrestoration.us/public.html for information on this important program helping to protect our lake. Jerome also men-tioned another group, Healthy Lakes Coalition, that boaters should be
aware of which is also trying to protect the Great Lakes. Its website is at http://healthylakes.org. As Lake Michigan boaters, we should not take the lake for granted. WSPS members should be aware of chal-lenges to our lake and some of the programs dealing with them which
are covered in these websites.

District Commander Caren Canfield, JN.
This is the third time this award has been given. It is the result of all the hard work and leadership in WSPS over the last two years. D/C Canfield mentioned a few items that were important in arriv-ing at selecting WSPS. They included the D20 Cruise and Rendezvous we hosted in August 2013, the work and leadership with D20 on modernizing our website, WSPS member involvement as D20 Bridge members and other important supporting roles in D20 activities, and our overall edu-cation program. It is the design of the WSPS website that is now being used as a template for not
only the new District 20 website, but also for all of the other Squadron web sites in the district.
WSPS also received three more awards at the D20 conference. Two National Distinctive Commu-nicator Awards were given to the staff of WSPS in recognition of distinctive performance for the WSPS website and for our Waukeelog newsletter. The third was a D20 award for extraordinary contribution the USPS Educational Fund for the furtherance of education in the fields of navigation and small boat handling. WSPS makes a yearly contribution to USPS from member dues to sup-
port this effort.

JUNIOR NAVIGATION
Start Date: Wednesday 2 April 2014
Location: Brunswick Corporation, Lake Forest, IL
Junior Navigation is the first in a two-part program of study in offshore navigation, followed by the USPS Navigation course. It is designed as a practical "how to" course. The student will learn to use the sun as a reference point in navigating. The course begins with the study of celestial navigation, teaching the student how to take sights on the sun with a marine sextant and sight reduction tech-niques. Cruise planning, positioning, and checking one’s position in the offshore environment fol-low, using both electronic and celestial tools. The course ends with a simulated cruise plotted on a
chart using all the navigation techniques learned in the course.
ABC BOATING COURSE (Course open to the public.)
Start Date: Six Session Course, Thursday 5 June 2014
Nine Session Course, Thursday 18 September 2014
All are Thursday classes from 7:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
Location: College of Lake County (CLC), Grayslake, IL
Presented as a public service by the Waukegan Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of U.S. Power Squad-rons. SAIL
Start Date: Monday, 8 September 2014
Location: Brunswick Corporation, Lake Forest, IL
Sail is a complete sail course created to serve the needs of the novice and experienced sailor, as well as the non-sailor, for basic skills and knowledge. The course starts with basic sailboat designs and nomenclature, rigging, safety, and sail processes and then tackles the physical aspects of sailing forces and techniques, sail applications, marlinespike, helmsmanship and handling of more difficult sailing conditions, navigation rules, and an introduction to heavy weather sailing. Supplemental ma-
terial provides an introduction to sailboat racing and sailing in Canadian waters.
WEATHER
Start Date: Wednesday, 10 September 2014
Location: Brunswick Corporation, Lake Forest, IL
The safety and comfort of those who venture out-on-the water have always been weather dependent. In this course students will become keener observers of the weather, but weather observations only have meaning in the context of the basic principles of meteorology — the science of the atmosphere. The course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with one another and reflects the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the Internet. This is a general weather course benefiting those sitting in their living rooms, as much as those standing behind the
helm.
SEAMANSHIP
Start Date: Monday, 1 December 2014
Location: Brunswick Corporation, Lake Forest, IL
Seamanship is applicable to both power and sail boaters, covering topics as the construction and functioning of a boat, the skipper’s responsibilities, preparing the boat for use, handling and maneu-vering a vessel under various conditions in close quarters and on the open water, rules of the road, anchoring, emergencies, marlinspike and basic knots. Supplemental material covers boating into the waters of Canada and Mexico.

Heavy Weather Sailing
Tuesday, 1 April 2014 at 1900
Presented by Mike Ludtke (Commodore of the North Point Sail Racing Association, Past Commander of the Waukegan Sail
and Power Squadron) and Tom Parkinson, JN
This seminar covers the topic many boaters encounter at some time in their on-the-water experiences. Many of you have experiences that could help fellow sailors so this will be a very interactive evening. Bring your
hints, equipment, and advice.
The discussion will be focus on avoidance, equipment, and weather review. By the end of the evening we
should all have learned information and techniques to make us more confident sailors.
Basic Weather and Forecasting
Tuesday, 6 May 2014 at 1900 Presenter TBD
All boaters have heard this mariners’ proverb or similar ones. They have a salty flavor that takes us back to
the era of sailing ships. In this seminar students will learn the meteorological basis for them.
The safety and comfort of those who venture out-on-the-water have always been weather dependent. This seminar is a must for boaters who have never taken a weather course. The complex subject of weather is presented in a way that is both understandable and useful. Topics include: air masses and fronts, winds,
storms, clouds and thunderstorms, fog, and forecasting.

What do you do if you just bought a used boat and you hate the
name? By Elizabeth Aristeguieta, AP (aka SailAwayGirl)
Sailors are many things and superstitious is one of them. Probably the subject that brings out the biggest fear is renaming your sailboat. There are so many horror stories about subse-quent casualties to vessels that did not undergo a proper renaming ceremony that some sail-ors will keep a name they hate just to not temp fate.
So what do you do if you just bought a used boat and you hate the name? You must undergo a proper de-naming ceremony first and then you need to have your renaming ceremony pref-erably with at least a 24 hour space between the two for elegance sake.
Of the two rituals, the de-naming is the most important. So what are the steps? Here you go:
1. Remove everything on the boat with the old name. That means charts, logs, hats, anything and everything.
2. If anything has the name painted on it, sand it off. Simply re-painting over the name will not do.
3. If the name is etched, fill with putty and then paint over it.
4. Do not tempt fate and put the new name on before all of the old name is removed from the boat.
5. Now that everything with old name is gone, it's time for the de-naming ceremony which includes 5 parts, the invo-cation, an expression of gratitude for the past safe passages she has undergone, the supplication, a re-dedication, and finally libation.
So you may wish to say something along the lines of:
For all who have sailed on (old name) past present and future, we implore the gods of wind and sea to bless us this day. To the mighty Gods of the seas, Posei-don, Amphitrite and Palaimon, we thank you for the for the protection you have pro-vided this vessel in the past for safe passage to many a port. We hereby request that (old name) be stricken from your ancient log and we further ask that when you have given your blessing of her new name, that she be guarded once again as you have blessed her till this day when we return her to your domain. In recognition of your gifts we offer as is tradition this libation to seal your blessing.
I'm sure you would be more eloquent than I have been here.
Then you smash and entire bottle (or just pour an entire bottle) of GOOD champagne on the bow. Do not steal even a
swig as this is considered ill will. And no cheap stuff either, it's your life and your boat we are talking about here!
Now for the renaming...24 or more hours later break or pour another expensive bottle of champagne on the bow while you say "I christen thee the (new name) may all who sail on her meet with fair winds, safe passage and good fortune". You can do this in front of a crowd or on your own out loud of course!
Please no new names that challenge the seas or Gods like Wind Tamer etc. Why tempt fate?
Now you can sail on your newly christened boat knowing you have appropriately paid homage to the Gods that watch over her.
Editors Note: The next few pages feature interesting and fun information submitted by WSPS members. I hope you enjoy these reflections on boating and life on the water. Feel free to submit your own boating lore, poetry, helpful information, and more, including photos for possible inclusion in a future Waukeelog. Enjoy!

Building a New Boating Generation: BSA Sea Scouts by Tom Parkinson, JN
Sea Scouts is a co-ed program for young men and women who are 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade or are 14 and not yet 21 years of age. (Approximately 35% of all Sea Scouts are female.) Any youth who meets the age and membership standards of the Boy Scouts of Ameri-ca can join the Sea Scouts even if they were not Scouts as younger youths. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the program and are needed to help with chaperoning activities and meetings as well as serving as instructors if they have the skills to help provide strength to the program. Younger youth
(for example, siblings) intending to join can have a level of participation.
Sea Scouts are organized into groups called “Ships” — the Ship local to Waukegan is “Sea Scout Ship 946” based in North Point Marina. The lead-
ing adult organizer is called a “Skipper,” and the Skipper of SSS 946 is Tom Parkinson, a member of WSPS([email protected]). Other squadron members also are “officers” with
this Ship. The Flagship of SSS 946 is “Sailaway”, a Ranger 26, and there are other smaller sailboats.
Sea Scouts survive on donations and their work projects. They work on maintaining their boats and can al-ways use donations of equipment like lines and paint, compasses, radios, batteries, trailer tires – everything
up to actual boats. SSS 946 is at present selling a San Juan 24 sailboat with a road trailer – any offers?
What kind of activities do Sea Scouts do? Sea Scouts are all about activities in, on, under, and around the water. They participate in aquatics and boating activities, but they can also do other types of activities based on the interests of the youth involved. Some go camping, rock-climbing, caving, and much more. The Sea Scouts of SSS 946 enjoy taking other youth groups sailing on Lake Michigan, including Scout Troops
and 4-H groups. They also enjoy canoeing, both day trips and overnights.
How can I become an adult volunteer in Sea Scouts? Any person, male or female, who is 21 years of age or older and meets the membership standards of the Boy Scouts of America can apply to be an adult volun-teer with Sea Scouts. Generally adult leaders should have an interest in or skills related to nautical, boating, or underwater activities. Link to FAQ sheet: http://www.seascout.org/component/edocman/?

SEA-FEVER I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

READY OR NOT! BOATING SEASON SET TO KICK OFF!
Come join your friends and fellow WSPS boaters for dinner and a general meeting. Trade stories and share
advice on a successful season launch.
Our featured speaker will be Captain Pete Thompson from Southport/Kenosha TowBoat US. Find out key
tips to keep you and your vessel safe and secure.
Capt. Pete Thompson is the owner and founder of Lakeland Marine Towing and Salvage. This is his second time at the helm. In 2002, he opened the first Marine Towing Company in Kenosha affiliated with TowBoat US, a network of 600 towboats serving 300 ports across the United States. After two successful seasons, he
moved to New York's South Shore and worked with Reynolds Towing on Long Island, NY.
In 2012, the Kenosha area TowBoat US franchise became available and Capt. Thompson re-started Lake-land Marine Towing. He has preformed hundreds of towing and salvage evolutions successfully includ-ing towing, fuel drops, jump starts, diving, wreck removal, pollution control, and salvage operations on Lake Michigan and the Great South Bay in NY. He holds a USGC 100 ton Masters License with a Towing en-
dorsement. Capt. Thompson has also performed yacht deliveries and charter fishing.
WSPS will provide wine, beer and the entrée. If your last name begins with A thru M, please bring an appe-tizer to pass. If your last name begins with N thru Z, please bring a dessert to pass. Also, if three people
would volunteer to bring tossed salad that would be great.

Nuts & Bolts
From Brian Markey, AP: During the spring 2014 Engine Maintenance class, Jeff Geltz mentioned installing the "Smart Plug" in place of the obsolete twist connectors standard on most boats. Here is a link that drives the point home how bad the twist connectors are and why. I love this site and his blunt to the point explanations. TONS of great stuff there which including water pumps, battery care, wiring, through hull strainers, etc. Check out: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/installing_a_smart_plug
