5-Minute Check
• Compare. Write >, <, or =.• 4/6 O 5/6• 4/8 O 3/8• 4/12 O 1/3• 1/2 O 9/16• Order from least to greatest.• 1/3, 4/6, 2/4• 3/10, 2/5, 1/4
Objective
• Be the end of the lesson, you will be able to add and subtract fractions.
• Standard 3NS3.2 - Students will add and subtract simple fractions(e.g., determine that 1/8 + 3/8 is the same as 1/2.)
Introduce
• Using the pattern blocks in the middle of your desk, answer the following questions:
• If the hexagon is the whole, what fraction is one trapezoid?
• One rhombus?• Three triangles?• Two trapezoids?• Two rhombus?
Let’s Practice!!
• Using the pattern blocks, let’s see if we can add fractions.
• The hexagon is the whole:
• Show 2/6 and 1/6• How much of the
hexagon do you have if you added them both together?
• 1/6 + 3/6• 5/6 + 1/6• Using the rhombus
show 1/3 + 1/3• How much of the
hexagon do you have if you added them both together?
• 2/3 + 1/3
Like Fractions
• The fractions 2/6 and 1/6 have the same denominators. They are like fractions. You can add like fractions.
• To add fractions with like denominators, add the numerators and keep the same denominator.
Let Me Break It Down
• If the denominators are the same, then simple add the numerators and put that over the same denominator
• 2 + 1 5 5 Same denominator
• Simply, just add 2 + 1
• 2+1=3 Place 3 over the denominator 5

Game!!
Bales Bucks Add/subtract and then reduce to
simplest form!!
• 4/7 + 2/7• 3/8 + 2/8• 1/3 + 1/3• 4/9 + 5/9• 8/12 - 3/12• 9/20 - 7/20
• 1/6 + 3/6• 7/23 + 9/23• 8/100 + 20/100• 50/200 + 35/200• 16/17 - 4/17• 28/19 - 20/19
