ust 2,75 lengths was the difference between Van Vuuren celebrating a rare double Gr1 success and nothing at all when another Australian-bred in

his Teofilo colt Brazuca was a fast-finishing runner up in both the Cape Guineas and Investec Cape Derby down South.

And then on Saturday, Belong To Me – in the very same silks- was not disgraced when under two lengths off Gulf Storm in the Cape Flying Championship.

HighveldBut that is all modern

history now as the yard approaches the Highveld season with renewed vigour and enthusiasm, and New Predator could give them a flying start in the Tony Ruffel.

A son of New Approach, New Predator has not finished further back than second in his five outings and few will forget his titanic duel with new star Noah From Goa in the Gr2 Dingaans on Sansui Summer Cup at the end of

November. Noah From Goa went on to win the Cape Guineas and run a cracking third in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the form has been franked in blue chip fashion. New Predator had a stretch in between when he narrowly beat the highly thought of Tarry galloper Buckland over 1200m at the Vaal a month ago.

Racing off a 107, he should be primed to fire for a massive effort over the 1450m – and over and above his straight advantage at the weights, he receives 2kgs from two of his prime rivals, in Champagne Haze and KZN hope, Celtic Captain.

CelebrationsThe Gary Alexander trained

Champagne Haze is a course and distance winner and a big earner courtesy of his terrific win in the CTS Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup late last year.

Unlike New Predator’s smooth passage, the half-brother (by Kahal) to superstar Pierre Jourdan hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons at his last start when a

well beaten odds-on favourite, behind Lunar Approach in an MR 93 Handicap last time.

The winner – who finished 6,50 lengths ahead of a flat-footed Champagne Haze – then went to Cape Town and was beaten over 10 lengths by Illuminator in the CTS Million Dollar.

There were seemingly valid excuses for Champagne Haze – from unsuitable riding tactics on the ground on the day to him being less ready than expected – and there will be many waiting to see him return to winning ways under Andrew Fortune.

KZN ChallengeGavin Van Zyl-trained

Celtic Captain looks to validate the strength of the KZN form and this son of Captain Al has won 3 of his 7 starts in good style.

He beat older horses last time when fitted with blinkers for the first time and could be anything at his first Joburg jump. He has it all to do at the weights on paper, but is not exposed at feature level as yet.

Met Day heroes Justin Snaith and Piere Strydom

team up with the enigmatically talented Lineker – another Australian bred 3yo who has show decent ability.

The son of Star Witness jumps from a 1 draw but looks held by New Predator on his 4,50 length fourth in the Dingaans, where he stalled in the final stages.

Strydom has questioned this fellow’s commitment in giving of his best and it will be interesting to see how long he avoids the unkindest cut of all. Victory here would go some way to establishing his credentials, though!

Down UnderThe Aussies hold a strong

hand in the race and Mike De Kock saddles Magic Albert’s son Suyoof, a recent post-maiden winner.

The lightly raced gelding was narrowly beaten by Brazuca on debut and has won his last two starts – albeit beating little of consequence. He jumps from a tough 10 draw and the top yard will have a line through his stablemate Noah From Goa as to his hopes against New Predator.

Ormond Ferraris trained Romany Prince has drawn even wider, but must have some sort of place shout after his eyecatching second place chase behind the boom galloper Abashiri in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes three weeks ago.

He received 2,5kgs when beating the promising Malak El Moolook at his penultimate start over Saturday’s track and trip.

Tarry TwoMalak El Moolook is one

of the Tarry attack here and he may have found the Sea Cottage Stakes too far when 6,15 lengths behind Abashiri.

His stablemate Rikitikitana looks the better, even though running a shocker in the Dingaans when finishing double digits behind the winner. He has shown a nice turn of foot, but may find this on the sharpish side.

Anton Marcus joins forces with Met winner Alec Laird with Danza, who shed his maiden over the course and distance at his seventh try, at his penultimate start.

The rest look to have plenty to do and best of those may be Le Clos, who gets thrown in the deep end (excuse the

pun) by Mike Azzie. He has a decent 2 draw in his favour, but should struggle.

ConfidentA man with a shrewd eye in

Mike de Kock suggested the Dingaans runner-up will go places.

His own Noah From Goa has outstripped all expectations - New Predator remains a confident choice to hold Champagne Haze and Lineker – with an upset looking unlikely.

Old School LeaderSaturday’s Turffontein feature race honours one of the

great old school racing administrators of years gone by.The late Tony Ruffel was a former Steward, Chairman

of the Transvaal Owners and Trainers Association, as well as a Chairman of the National Federation of Owners and Trainers(NATFED).

He was appointed Chairman of the then Jockey Club of SA in 1981. His wife Joan made history when becoming the first female Steward in our history when elected to the board of the Newmarket Turf Club.

Trainer Johan Janse Van Vuuren had less than no luck in the Cape Summer Of Champions Season but he could take his next step to a classic prize in the months ahead. He saddles the promising Australian-bred New Predator, who will start very fancied to win the R400 000 Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

rainer Craig Mayhew won’t mind us observing that he is not a regular batter amongst the Group race top order and it is great to see him coming in with a serious classic hopeful in the Jay Peg filly She’s A Dragon, who has won 3

of her 5 starts by an aggregate margin of over 11 lengths.

The Tawny Syndicate bred filly has been brought along slowly and takes her first step into feature race waters on Saturday – and her connections will soon find out if she is as good as she has looked so far in the R250 000 Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes.

Gavin Lerena has won twice on her and he takes the controls again from a decent draw.

Big DayThe Van Vuuren-Wernars combination will be

looking at a big day with New Predator lining up in the Tony Ruffel and Anton Marcus partners the grey Gr3 Fillies Mile winner Negroamaro – named after a red wine grape variety native to southern Italy.

The daughter of Fort Wood jumps from a wide draw but has the versatility and gate speed to overcome that obstacle.

TShe found the 1200m on the short side last

time when staying on strongly for third and 0,75 lengths behind Swift Sarah. That was exactly a month ago and she should be strong enough to take on this lot – certainly on paper where her 104 rating makes her a standout.

Piere Strydom is back aboard Gr3 Starling Stakes winner Madame Dubois, who was late withdrawal from the Fillies Mile after undergoing a change of ownership.

The daughter of Count Dubois comes in here off a 14 week break but has her 2 draw in her favour – and the hold on Negroamaro, whom she beat at her third start. Robbie Sage obviously has bigger fish to fry with Madame Dubois and a lot will depend on her race fitness.

Funny GirlSean Tarry’s Heaps Of Fun is a course and

distance winner but has drawn awfully and was well beaten by 4,25 lengths in the Fillies Mile by Negroamaro.

Heaps Of Fun looked all over a winner in the Listed Swallow Stakes in that terrific comeback fight by her stablemate Mambonick, who received 2kgs from her. She will strip fit.

Mike De Kock is well represented by Persian

Rug and Noor. With Anthony Delpech riding the latter, she may well be the stable pick but has travelled the Cape round-trip where she finished 6,40 lengths behind Silver Mountain in the Cape Fillies Guineas.

Persian Rug is another held by Negroamaro on her 7,50 length fourth in the Fillies Mile. The daughter of newsmaker Ideal World won twice early over 1400m and she may be suited to the shorter trip.

LuckyJoan Ranger and

Firstimesacharm make up the Lucky Houdalakis coupling.

Joan Ranger looks held on her decent Starling Stakes third and her unplaced effort in the Fillies Mile by Madame Dubois and Negroamaro respectively and should battle to assert her authority.

Firstimesacharm has her first run at Turffontein and tries the 1450m for the first time.

The daughter of Antonius Pius has won twice from five starts and has earned her

place – but she will need to put her best foot forward.

Mike Azzie saddles the unbeaten Silvano filly Penny Serenade, who is an interesting contestant from the 1 draw in the hands of ‘J&B’ Van der Merwe.

She has shown good toe in her two sprints, but should easily find this trip on breeding. Bella Sonata is another daughter of Silvano, and this course and distance winner steps into the feature league for the first time after winning 2 from 3.

She could be the dark horse in the field and has been very impressive to date.

Glamour GirlThe Alexander’s Crystal

Glamour has drawn terribly at 13 but won her prep run last time despite stumbling at the start. She ran Tony Ruffel candidate Lineker to a 0,25 length at her penultimate start and looks a very decent sort.

Stan Ferreira’s Juxtapose could have the edge on Crystal Glamour on her last run, but was beaten 7,25

The fairer sex leg of Saturday’s Gr3 Turffontein 3yo double feature on Saturday looks a far more competitive affair than the boys’ equivalent. The presence of a smaller yard amongst the top-rated contestants makes it an interesting race too.

he smart win by the 5yo son of Danehill Dancer was just another example how so much went right for the Justin Snaith team on their world

record-breaking(so we believe, anyway) day of eight winners – six of which were on the trot.

Tabnews reported that pundits at Kenilworth Racecourse could not call to mind any stable having eight winners at one meeting, or the first six on a programme – and certainly no-one has done it at such a prestigious race day.

In fact, racing fundis couldn’t recall such a feat anywhere in the world and Tellytrack presenters started talking about a world record.

n typical big race day showboat style, the Snaiths had all of their major firepower in action and when one opened the card their 36 runners suggested that there would be some serious

action. But the winning streak beat anything we have seen from them in recent times – with everything going sweetly to plan.

The yard had a trio of runners in the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes and despite the money pouring on the unraced Bishop’s Bounty, it was debut winner Sergeant Hardy who came up trumps under S’manga Khumalo.

Bishop’s Bounty, a full brother to the top class Red Ray, Brutal Force and Narnia,went off at even money and was settled in midfield, as Sergeant Hardy defied the headwind to lead the

With fifteen runners jumping in front the stands, the staying race is always a crowd pleaser , although the Cape staying style of crawl and sprint would have again irked those with genuine stayers in the event.

Oh So Modus led them early from Zante and the fancied Solid Speed in close attendance.

Into the home run, Solid Speed moved forward powerfully down the inside as Ovidio got going as he weaved his way through runners on the outside.

In a top display of race riding, Fayd’herbe got him home under a hands and heels ride to beat Coltrane by 1,25 lengths in a time of 181,73 secs. Last year’s winner Kingston Mines finished

strongly for third, with Solid Speed hanging on to fourth – just ahead of Gallica Rose who only got going when the race was over. Ovidio was purchased by James Bester Bloodstock for A$ 30897 at the Inglis Bloodstock 2012 Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He was described as ‘one of the cheaper horses we bought in Australia’by co-owner Hassen Adams.

He is a son of Danehill Dancer out the Red Ransom mare, Pre Nup – who was out of De Beauvoir.

Pre Nup won once and ran two places from 12 starts.

Ovidio has now won 6 races with 9 places from 18 starts and took his stakes tally to R597 825.

He looks to be maturing into a decent stayer.

Despite losing his whip at the start of the R400 000 Gr2 J&B Urban Honey Stayers, heavyweight jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe was able to keep the Australian-bred Ovidio in the race for the entire 2800m to score a convincing win.

Trainer Justin Snaith reeled off an extraordinary winning streak and marketing coup when saddling the first five winners on the flagship J&B Met card at Kenilworth on Saturday. The big winning run from the top Cape yard included the R150 000 Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes with the Captain Al colt, Sergeant Hardy.

At the 300m marker, the 3-1 shot Sergeant Hardy kicked again, and with Karl Zechner riding for his life on the chasing Pacific Spirit, the winning post came up comfortably with Sergeant Hardy clocking 60,12 secs for the 1000m and winning by 0,75 lengths.

Bishop’s Bounty had a few traffic issues, and only got going late – he failed by a short head to bank the second cheque.

The filly Felicity Flyer ran into fourth, with the Snaith’s Var Ahead out of the money – after finding himself outpaced early.

The winner is raced by his breeder Veronica Foulkes, and rumoured to be a ‘roarer’ – he apparently failed the Vet at sale.

An emotional Veronica Foulkes conceded that Sergeant Hardy had his breathing problems, but

expressed the hope that confining him to races up the straight would limit the impact.

Trainer Justin Snaith said that he had prepared Sergeant Hardy for the Ready To Run and had been impressed by him – and was very happy to get him back.

He was a R450 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 buy and bred by Normandy Stud. The colt is by champion sire Captain Al out of the four-time winner Hard Lady (by Hard Up), who also raced in the vieux rose and white silks. Sergeant Hardy has won two from two and took his stakes earnings to R134 375.

Snaith’s other winners amongst the first five were Fire Master, Star Express and Qing – all ridden by Piere Strydom, while Bernard Fayd’herbe got Acaciawood home in the third race.

And the day is far from over!

The feature is named in honour of 61 year old Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts, an eleven time Champion jockey of South Africa and 1992

Champion jockey of Britain, who trains horses these days out of Summerveld.

A neck injury, resulting from a fall in the UK in 2001, led Roberts to retire from riding and, as always, he was on track to hand over the trophies.

The race, usually run at Scottsville, was contested over

Howells Takes The ‘Muis’ Salute

the Greyville turf 1800m and presented a tricky handicap puzzle as it usually does, with a mixed bunch lining up.

Howells’ lightly raced colt was the only 3yo in the fourteen horse field, but went off a well supported 17-10 shot, and didn’t let the side down. And it looked tight in the final 300m as Gavin Van Zyl’s power galloping 7yo Silver Spring appeared to have poached a winning break in the hands of the in-form Warren Kennedy, after Serissa had led for a long way.

But Muzi Yeni, who had recovered quickly from an

awful fall at the Vaal a few days earlier, was full of fire and never stopped riding his mount, who went on to win by 0,25 lengths in a time of 107,67 secs.

Yeni scored a treble on the afternoon.

Garth Puller’s polytrack performer Way Of Light ran on nicely for third, a further two lengths back.

Dean Kannemeyer-trained Solar Star stayed on gamely for fourth. Ten Gun Salute, an Australian-bred son of Henrythenavigator, topped the final session of the CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run

Ashburton trainer Duncan Howells looks to have another very decent potential classic prospect on his hands and his Australian-bred Ten Gun Salute earned himself a host of new fans when streaking to victory in Sunday’s R150 000 Listed Michael Roberts Handicap at Greyville.

Sale. David Allan of Allan Bloodlines bid R1,15-million for the Australian-bred.

The colt, who had been snapped up for just A$10,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale ten months earlier, boasts impressive credentials as a

J&B Gr1 MET at Kenilworth last Saturday

n injury to regular jockey Weichong Marwing led to the Laird yard and Smart Call connections facing a week of tough decisions to find a suitable replacement rider.

And after negotiations fell flat with a trio of international riders, it was left to a 26 year old local lad

who enjoys pap and braaivleis, washed down with a crème soda nogal, to steer the progressive galloper home – and even relish the rare Gr1 luxury of a glance back at his stunned opponents in the final stages of one of our great races.

In the face of Justin Snaith’s world record eight winner rout, it was always going to take a massive performance in the feature to dominate the headlines on a sunny windswept afternoon – and the Mauritzfontein bred filly came to the party in grand fashion to register a sensational win in the black and yellow silks, worn by the 3yo superstar Horse Chestnut in 1999. Trainer Alec Laird saddled international superstar London News to win the Met in 1997, and having another potential globetrotter on his hands must be music to the ears of the veteran horseman.

The 2016 Met glory story had it opening chapter a few years ago when the Grande Dame of SA horseracing, the late Bridget Oppenheimer, delivered a young daughter of Kingmambo stallion Ideal World to Alec Laird’s yard.

And the tale reached a peak just seven hours prior to the race when JP van der Merwe stepped off the direct flight from Joburg and checked his smart phone – to feel the thrill of knowing that he had been confirmed as the jockey.

“Mr Laird and I spoke during the week. I have ridden her in work and know her as a decent filly. I kept refreshing the website to check who had been confirmed for the ride. Just after 09h00 on Saturday I checked again after we had landed. What a thrill – and yes, I only really had seven odd hours to think about it,” he laughed modestly.

With the Met field reduced to 14 runners, and Smart Call the only rose in a bunch of serious Gr1 thorns, she was easy to back at 10-1.

And after a clean race that saw Legislate lead Helderberg Blue for home, it was left to the Paddock Stakes winner to match the L’Ormarins Queen’s’ Plate crackerjack – but it was no contest

Smart Call left Sean Tarry’s race favourite Legal Eagle for dead, as she drew off and won going away by 3,50 length in a time of 123,17 secs.

Despite glancing behind in disbelief, Van Der Merwe never stopped riding all the way to the lollipop – as the winner drifted out marginally in the process of his enthusiastic, albeit largely unnecessary, urgings.

Legal Eagle was given every chance, but was beaten fairly and squarely – and it was not to be

the Avontuur bred star’s day.Captain America came out of

the pack to grab third another length away, ahead of the gallant Glen Kotzen longshot Light The Lights, who ran his heart out to secure fourth.

Legislate ran a forward race and was always thereabouts – but faded inside the 350m and ran sixth, 6,20 lengths off the serious action.

Last year’s winner Futura ran eighth, a further two lengths behind – and jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe said afterwards that he had no excuses – even if he did appear to check when making his run from behind King Of Pain.

Justin Snaith admitted later that he would have traded his eight winners for the Met – but he will have to come back in twelve months to show that he can train a Met winner.

Sansui Summer Cup winner Master Sabina ran trailed off last in a disappointing showing – although his owner Mike De Broglio didn’t exactly waste his time jetting in from the USA, leading in two minor race winners.

Smart Call joins an illustrious modern era honour roll of female winners of this great race, that includes the likes of Igugu, River Jetez, Imperious Sue, Empress Club, Olympic

Duel, and a half century back to Renounce.

Van Der Merwe comfirmed that everything had gone perfectly and that Smart Call had come out of the stalls well.

“I sat behind Anton Marcus on the favourite and at the 300m she showed what she was made of,” he said.

Trainer Alec Laird was filled with emotion and his face reflected the strain of the three months of careful planning that had gone into the big win.

“What a wonderful moment. I was expecting her to do well but this was beyond our expectations. And what a top ride by JP – he was in the right place behind the favourite – she was travelling with her head up – but when she accelerated there was nothing coming at her. She is very special and was sent to me by Jess’s late grandmother. Unbelievable stuff,” he said.

Mauritzfontein’s Jessica Slack was also naturally elated and her usual Gr1 animated self – can we blame her!

“This is the best – it doesn’t feel real. I really had no idea how good she was. JP is a superstar,” she said.

Smart Call took her earnings to R3 416 125 at her seventh win with 6 places from only 16 starts.

A classic Mauritzfontein product, Smart Call is a daughter of Ideal World out of the 1999 Met winner Horse Chestnut’s unraced daughter, Good Judgement – a half-sister to Vodacom Durban July winner, Greys Inn, who sired runner-up Legal Eagle.

A stakes winning son of breed-shaping sire Kingmambo,who was euthenised at age 26 at Lane’s End recently, and champion racemare Banks Hill, Ideal World is closely related to successful sires Dansili, Cacique and Champs Elysees – the family of Gr1 Qipco 2000 Guineas Gr1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Gleneagles. In the aftermath of a terrific day, spare a thought for top jockey Weichong Marwing, who had been aboard Smart Call in all of her six wins.

He was replaced on CTS Million Dollar winner Illuminator a week earlier – and then had to watch another historic winner from the grandstand on Saturday.

The Breeders Cup invitation earned after Smart Call’s Paddock Stakes victory is looking more of an exciting reality every day! And the quote of the day came from tenth race winning conditioner, Andre Nel: “It feels great to have a winner on Snaith Day.”

Gr1 CAPE FLYING CHAMPIONSHIP at Kenilworth last Saturday

rawford and Orffer have developed into a combative force to be reckoned with in the Cape and even if the partnership only developed by chance through an injury to veteran jockey Glen Hatt, the pair have flourished and gone from strength to strength.

With luck temporarily deserting Justin Snaith, with Daring Dave losing lengths at the start, it was S’manga Khumalo who showed the benefits of what he had learnt in the Sceptre Stakes disaster, as he had Carry On Alice scooting along out front, just ahead of Guiness.

Gulf Storm was tucked in about three lengths off and within shouting range of the leader. Into the final 300m, the headwind took it’s toll on the front-runners as Gulf Storm and Brutal Force took off almost simultaneously on opposite sides of the track.

In the most thrilling finish of the afternoon, the photo showed that Gulf Storm had snuck in between Tevez and Carry On Alice to get his head down and beat the flying Brutal Force on the outside by a head – the gallant winner clocked a time of 56,92 secs. The track record of 56 secs is held by Muscatt and dates back to 2012.

The tote favourite Carry On Alice hung on for third, ahead of the always game, Tevez.

After his slow start, Daring Dave took off late to run just 3,20 lengths behind the winner.

Louis Goosen’s top Joburg sprinter Trip Tease was all dressed up with nowhere to go, and after endless traffic issues, ran downfield to end a disappointing Cape campaign.

The Ascot Stud-bred winner is a son of the deceased Sail From Seattle out of the very fast four-time winning Kilconnel mare, Royal Drummer.

It was always going to be tough to overshadow the Snaith show at Kenilworth on Saturday, and the Laing record for Ingrid and Markus Jooste passed by without much fanfare.Ms Laing trains exclusively for the top owner partnership and made it a terrific hat-trick in the non black-type feature, with jockey

Raymond Danielson aboard when Vauclair won it for the first time in 2014 and Unannounced (in the same silks) scored in 2015.

On Friday, Danielson booted the 6yo Var gelding home for his ‘lucky’ 13th win at the expense of stablemates Captain’s Reserve, Black Toga and The West Is Wide. The 17-10 favourite was untroubled to win the 1200m straight contest in the seven horse field to score by 0,75 lengths in a time of 66,84 secs.

“WE’RE succeeding,” he said, “and I believe we’re in front of most other sports around the world.

“You have only to read the newspapers and every day there seems to be a big issue on integrity in other sports. Maybe we don’t communicate enough with the outside world about what we do, but I think our image is changing thanks to the problems other sports are facing.”

‘Ongoing battle’Speaking on the final day of

the Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai on Thursday, Romanet, chairman of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, warned against complacency.

“It’s an ongoing battle,” he said. “It’s never perfect as big labs are manufacturing drugs for human beings which later on are used for horses, so we have to permanently invest and improve our quality if we don’t want to lose our place.”

Pointing to the IFHA’s international agreement on racing and wagering, in which an eight-

page article covers screening limits for 28 therapeutic substances and detection times for 32, Romanet said:

“It’s been a success. It doesn’t mean allowing horses to race under medication, but we’re allowing those that have minor traces of a therapeutic substance which can have no effect on its performance, so that trainers can take care of their horses.”

He added: “The global integrity of racing is a basic principle and must be our permanent priority, for the confidence of the betting public and for the breeding industry.”

Brian Stewart, head of equine welfare at Racing Victoria, who has been working at the heart of the cobalt cases in Australia, agreed with Romanet, saying that racing was “doing pretty well compared to other sports” on implementing drug-free policies.

However, Stewart called for a change in culture to “disentangle legitimate medication from the taint of an anti-doping connection,” referring to the public perception that “someone has an Amazonian treatment

or a Chinese herb that gives them an edge”. He added: “One problem of our culture, especially around racing stables, is we can become desensitised to accepted practices. What we regard as perfectly normal can be viewed by outsiders as completely unacceptable. We have to be careful not to be caught up in our own world.”

Education neededStewart called for better and

further education of trainers, saying: “Very few professions don’t require some form of continuing education, and I don’t think racehorse trainers are any different. People wouldn’t be too impressed if their accountant said he was too busy to catch up with the latest change in tax codes. “We also have to have a high probability non-compliance will be detected, and we have to take on the enablers, those people who sell the dream to trainers about the latest and greatest ‘go-fast’ or anabolic that can’t be detected, or the EPO-substance that isn’t actually EPO.”

Recent alarming events in athletics have provided proof that racing is ahead of the game in the implementation of drug-free policies, according to leading international

administrator Louis Romanet.

It is thought that the feat of saddling the top four in a feature for the same owner is an SA record – and Danielson added the cherry on top by making it a personal hat trick in the feature.

The winning gelding is a mobile billboard for the versatility,hardiness and gutsy ability of the Var offspring.

Vauclair was bred by Pippa Mickleburgh, and is by Var out of the 1998 Majorca Stakes winner, Wild Aster (by Elliodor) – who won 6 races.

Vauclair has now earned R770 980 in stakes and took his win tally to 13, with 12 places from his 41 starts. He was purchased by Joey Ramsden at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 for R350 000.

He left the Ramsden yard at Milnerton as a one time winner from eight starts for Tara Laing’s PE base in March 2013.

It was a weekend for smashing records in South African horseracing and trainer Tara Laing and champion owners Ingrid and Markus Jooste got the ball rolling at Fairview on Friday when the combination celebrated a top four finish in the R100 000 Fairview Merchants.

is stalwarts Quechua and Cooptado will carry top weight but it is up and coming stayer Perfect P, recent winner of the New Year Cup, that will be my first choice.

He is a lovely stayer in the making and his trackwork has

been scintillating. Pat’s Time Odyssey won again last week and his season has gotten off to a flying start. The son of Jet Master was given a really solid push by Aussie jock Corey Brown and he is most definitely one who will compete at the highest level in the months to come.

Rare BlendI watched the Met day racing with great

interest. Congratulations to Jessica Slack and her Mauritzfontein operation. What a filly and what a performance. Kudos to farm manager Guy Murdoch. He is another true gentleman of the game and to see the pure elation on his face was just fantastic.

Of course Alec Laird has tasted Met success before, and I am so glad to read she will be heading to the Breeders Cup meeting in November. Alec’s success overseas is well documented and I hope she can keep his

fantastic overseas record intact. My highlight of the day was Gulf Storm winning the Cape Flying.

As I alluded to last week, the Crawford yard and my good friend Corne Orffer always get the sentimental vote from me. I am so happy Corne has won his maiden Group 1 and I truly hope the flood-gates now open for him at the highest level.

To owners Lance and Delma Sherrell, congratulations. Not only did he do you proud, but I thought Captain America showed he is one of the better older horses around with a gallant 3rd in the Met!

LaffI need to also commend one of my dearest

friends Paul Lafferty on a remarkable effort with Harry’s Son.

He did so well after the arduous journey to get to Dubai and I am sure he will continue to make us all proud! Talking about proud, Mike De Kock is flying the flag , as usual, and his horses are in hot form at the moment both locally and abroad. All in all, our horses again show they can compete on the world’s stage and I am proudly South African!

HThe Chinese New Year is upon us and we have been spoilt in terms of quality racing. The main event next Tuesday is the Fortune Bowl and Pat Shaw has a very strong hand. With 6 of the 12 entries, I would be very surprised if he did not take out the 2016 renewal, writes Gareth Pepper.

he irony for Nel is that his boss Sabine Plattner is a Snaith Racing patron, and one can only wonder which Cape owner isn’t going to desire

(secretly or otherwise) at least a leg of a horse with the Phillipi-based family operation, after their eight win rout in 12 races – including the first six in a row – on what we believe has got to be a world record shattering orgy of triumph.

This was simply embarrassing butt-kicking dominance on a scale few of us have witnessed in any sporting arena.

Sure, the blonde wannabee handicapper in the mod tight fitting suit threw the kitchen sink at the Met card - as he generally loves to do on the Cape’s two big days.

34 runners is double the permanent equine population of many of his colleagues.

But it is the Snaith’s larger opposition who must be wondering what makes the J&B Team (that’s Justin and brother, by the way) so damn effective.

Snaith’s Met Day Magic

When Rondeberg trainer Andre Nel won a Mickey Mouse MR 72 Handicap with 20-1 shot Skip A Beat on J&B Met Saturday, his post-race quip summed up the unspoken sentiment felt by surely the majority of his battle scarred colleagues. ”It is so nice to win a race on Snaith Day!” he said with a broad smile.

Humble StartMet Day 2016 really started

on 4 July 1972, the day Justin’s current senior assistant, and chief float driver Dad, Chris, became the youngest racehorse trainer in South Africa at the age of 22.

In the spring of that same year, with the Moody Blues topping the charts with the anthemic Nights In White Satin, Chris and wife Sue, with a string of five horses, saddled the first Snaith runner.

In those days, when we could still buy a genuine proper bloomin’ racecard from the Kimberley Café and jackpot dividends were published in the Argus around midnight, websites were things found in dark and dusty corners of the stable - and social media was little more than a bottle of Lieberstein and a packet of Lexington 20’s on Clifton Beach.

How times have changed into the 21st century!

Chris eventually dropped the reins and took a back seat.

His two sons – the good looks were a bonus - were foist into the limelight. The one was the marketer, the other a horseman

like Dad. The trick is they can both do both jobs. They talked the talk – but it helped that they have also walked the walk.

ImageBesides the late Theo de Klerk’s

innovative flower in the lapel and dignified dapper look from the sixties, that so appealed to the original swallows, trainers didn’t always seem too preoccupied with public image. Winners were always more important.

But the Snaiths have long clicked that this is a numbers game and they needed the horses. And if you don’t ask, you just don’t get.

It’s a ‘lose if you snooze’ mentality of marketing aggression. Sort of, look after your owners – or we will.

And they just seem to have it all – they saddled the big race winners – most days they said the right things – they got the right guys behind them – and they have always appealed to a diverse spectrum from youth to seasoned racing folk- the type trainers battle to bluff.

They led the pack with the first trainer website in South Africa

over a decade ago. They have just marketed themselves cleverly – no trainer can do it without the owners and the horse – and the Snaith results have followed.

And in a cut-throat competitive dog-eat-dog game, they have grown. Not everybody loves them – do they care? Hardly- they’re too busy with post-race speeches!

Small TouchesIt is the small soft touches

too - the public and their owners love the morning fashion shoot of the champions on the beach that have become a regular feature on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

It was no harm that Justin became SA champion trainer at age 39 in the 2013/14 season and he is set to break all records again this term as he leads the national log – with 128 winners and an 18% win strike rate at precisely the halfway mark this week.

Some wag suggested that ‘Snaith’s elation at his phe-nomenal achievement was tempered just a little by not winning either of the two big Grade 1 races on the day’.

After the last race, Snaith said he’d swap the eight wins for a victory in the Met.

“I’ve got to get it right and win the Met!” he exclaimed.

“But I’ll take this as a good second prize.”

Sure, they need to learn to train a Met winner – they have had enough opportunities and they don’t want to get to Karl Neisius’ advanced years and have to rue the lost opportunities and what could have been.

JockeyshipOn the day, four of the eight

Snaith winners were ridden by multiple South African champion jockey Piere Strydom and two by Bernard Fayd’Herbe – with one apiece by S’manga Khumalo

and Heavelon Van der Hoven. And Strydom, particularly, needs an accolade for his outstanding contribution.

How the Gauteng trainers fail to give this magician a regular flow of top-class rides is beyond logic. The thought of him teaming up with Snaith on a permanent basis must be a scary thought for the beleaguered opposition ranks.

And, as if scripted to add to the drama, the day saw a fairytale ending- almost as if the Snaith team were borrowing a trick devised by Milnerton trainer Glen Puller with his Million Dollar magic of a week earlier.

Substituting originally engaged S’manga Khumalo with ‘super sub’ Heavelon Van der Hoven to win the last race on Baritone to round off a dream day just proved the level of confidence.

Hell, this is a bloody easy game when you’re on top!

Justin’s V-8 Roars Into Top Gear

t’s a quality that snags the attention of horsemen and makes their hearts skip a beat. Champion horses don’t always have it while perfectly ordinary horses sometimes do.

Circumstances dictate that some horses shine brightly for only a moment before the light flickers and fades, while others have it in such abundance that it lasts their full lifetime.

These are horses that change lives and re-set the course of destiny. These are the magic horses.

Statisticians will argue that magic is stupid and pretty much useless unless it can be quantified (and hopefully replicated) and it is not an unfair point. After all, we breed and race our horses in the hopes of finding a good one so that we can use it to breed and hopefully improve the next generation. So how does one quantify magic?

I don’t honestly think one can. At least, not until the career is over, all the checks and balances are in place and one can dissect the numbers in black and white and make a judgement. Of course, it can also be argued that black and white is for hindsight mongers trying to justify the magic by making the numbers fit.

Or conservative speculators trying to play safe by attaching a value to magic in the hopes of putting two bits of it together to produce a third. Occasionally it works, but generally magic does not exist in the realms of 1 + 1 = 2, and wants none of that logical nonsense.

Logic is for the timid souls who expect the world to make sense and want to measure the present against the past. Of course racing folk are anything but timid because we know. We have seen the magic and we know that it lies somewhere beyond the numbers.

Do you believe in magic?

Like most horsemen, I believe in this magic. I have to as I have seen enough evidence of it to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it exists, but it is a capricious thing. It doesn’t like hiding in stats or stuffy old record books – although if you look hard enough, you

might still see traces of it. It’s a feeling, rather than a collection of digits.

Mostly the magic lurks in the old stories, told by the old horsemen, and has to be collected bit by bit. However, the strongest magic is the stuff that you get in person, leaning against the rail with the sun on your back, waiting for the fireworks to explode up your spine.

The day I saw Horse Chestnut thunder across the finish line, 8 lengths clear of the 1999 J&B Met field, I felt those fireworks and I knew.

As Matthew Lips wrote in this very publication, “We can all live to be a thousand, and never again witness what we saw in the J&B Met.” There was no mistaking it – we witnessed greatness that day. And those are the days that keep us going back, hoping to catch a glimpse of it again.

Horse ChestnutIn the aftermath of his racing

and subsequent breeding career at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky, I only caught up with Horse Chestnut again at the 2011 Queen’s Plate. I was astounded at the profound effect this horse still had on people, myself included. Good horses get under your skin that way.

His death in 2015 was felt profoundly and I feared his magic may have died with him, so I was thrilled to find a golden thread running directly from that 1999 race to Smart Call’s win in the 2016 J&B Met.

I had to collect bits of the story here and there and thread them all together, so my apologies if I’ve missed a detail or two, but here is her story so far.

Good JudgementWhen Horse Chestnut

retired to stud at Claiborne, ‘Mrs O’ wanted a mare to send to him in Kentucky and mandated Robin Bruss with sourcing a worthy candidate. This he did, at the Inglis sale in Sydney, going to AUD340k for an unraced mare called Great Verdict by Christmas Tree out of a broodmare of the year, Summoned. At the time of purchase, Great Verdict was in foal to Zabeel and once she’d shipped to

Kentucky, duly produced a bay colt who would go on to be named Greys Inn (yes, the very same!).

Great Verdict met Horse Chestnut as planned in 2000 and in 2001 produced Good Judgement, who would follow her half brother Greys Inn to South Africa. She never raced and eventually found her way to the Mauritzfontein paddocks.

With the loss of Strike Smartly and Fort Wood not getting any younger, Mrs Oppenheimer set out to find a new stallion and purchased the beautifully bred Ideal World, who joined their stallion roster in 2010. Stud manager Guy Murdoch describes Good Judgement as a ‘big plain boat of a mare’. She visited Ideal World and produced Smart Call in 2011.

Guy relates that Good Judgement produced a full sister to Smart Call in 2012, before dying shortly afterwards. However, the farm owns a full sister to Good Judgement in the form of Crown Office. She produced a very nice Silvano colt for the 2015 National Sale and currently has a Byword at foot and is in foal to Vercingetorix. Smart Call’s 3yo full sister belongs to Jurgen van Heerden and is currently at stud and in foal to Querari.

Next generationWhen Mrs Oppenheimer

passed away in October 2013, Maurtizfontein stud and the famous black and yellow silks passed to her granddaughter Jessica Slack.

Like Horse Chestnut with Fort Wood, Smart Call was from the first crop of Ideal World and in the same way that de Kock made Horse Chestnut the top of his list, Smart Call was the pick of the bunch for trainer Alec Laird when he came to the farm to choose yearlings.

Given plenty of time to mature, Smart Call debuted over 1200m at Turffontein on 7 August 2014, finishing 4 lengths behind Carla The Rebel. On 22 September, she cantered down for a 1400m Fillies & Mares Maiden Plate at the Vaal. A racing acquaintance with a horse in the same race was given a bit of confidence by his trainer

and about to make his way to the betting windows when he was waylaid by Alec Laird.

Alec advised him to put his money back in his pocket with the words, “I’ve got a Gr1 filly in this race.” Smart Call romped home by 6.75 lengths and my friend’s horse finished a little further back in 3rd. Sometimes you just know.

Accompanied mostly by the skilful hands of Weichong Marwing, Smart Call progressed steadily through the ranks, doing little wrong. She finished 2.25 lengths 3rd behind Majmu in the Gr3 Starling Stakes and was 2 lengths behind Siren’s Call in the Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

She blotted her copybook somewhat by finishing out of the money in the Gr1 Fillies Classic and the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, before bouncing back in the SA 2000 to post her sire’s first Gr1 victory and rounded off her 3yo year one length second to Same Jurisdiction in the Garden Province Stakes.

After a short break, her 4yo career has been a revelation. On her return to the track, she finished 3.25 lengths off Bichette in a Pinnacle Stakes, exacting revenge by 0.75 lengths in the Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge on 28 November. She beat Pine Princess in an 1800m conditions plate on 12 December 2015 before making her way to Cape Town.

Alec Laird always stated the Gr1 Maine Chance Paddock Stakes as his main target and delivered by an emphatic 2 lengths over Inara on Queen’s Plate day. When I visited the yard a few days before the race, I was struck by Smart Call’s outstanding temperament and commented on it to Alec. He answered, “A

good temperament is a sign of good breeding.”

Dream bigGiven the manner in which

she won, the connections decided to dream big and entered for the Gr1 J&B Met.

With regular pilot Weichong Marwing having to stand down after a nasty fall, speculation reached fever pitch over who the replacement rider might be. The public were finally put out of their misery on Met morning, with the confirmation of up and coming young rider, JP van der Merwe.

It’s been a long time since a filly won the Met and with most of the money on Queen’s Plate winner Legal Eagle (interestingly by Great Verdict’s son, Greys Inn), Smart Call cantered postward an 8/1 shot. However, she repaid her backers handsomely, beating the colts home by 3.5 lengths gearing down and perhaps my favourite scene from the day was a weekend edition of the Sporting Post with our headline ‘Filly Meets Colts’ scratched out and corrected to ‘Filly Beats Colts’.

It was a tremendously emotional and popular win. Mr and Mrs Oppenheimer had their first big race success in the 1953 Met when 40/1 shot Prince Bertrand won by 1.5 lengths from Quickgrass. It was a very long wait until their second win in 1999 and on Saturday, a punter over the winner’s enclosure fence raised gooseflesh all around him with the comment, ‘Mrs Oppenheimer is very happy right now.”

Wood and Smart Call out of a Horse Chestnut mare and from the first crop of Ideal World. They nearly even had the same jockey! Horse Chestnut put Fort Wood on the map as a sire and when I asked Guy Murdoch whether Ideal World was getting any additional attention he confirmed that he’d had 5 bookings on Monday.

It may also be worth mentioning that there are a number of Ideal World fillies on offer on the forthcoming Val de Vie sale as well as a good crop of colts and fillies on the 2016 National Yearling Sale.

Horse Chestnut was exported and raced in the USA, winning the Broward Handicap on his first attempt. Smart Call’s Paddock Stakes win has earned her a ‘win and you’re in’ ticket to the 2016 Breeders’ Cup, and she looks set to try and better the record of her paternal granddam, Banks Hill in the Fillies & Mares Turf.

Can she do it? There are several factors in

her favour. To quote Robin Bruss, “Not many fillies win the Met. The ones that do are not just champions, they are super champions.”

Off a MR112, Smart Call beat a field that included the MR120 Legal Eagle, suggesting either the entire field ran below par, or the possibility that this filly is still improving hand over fist (“that will be a conundrum for the handicapper!” quipped Robin). She has an outstanding temperament, something vital to withstand the rigors of the export protocols and she has a passionate and sporting set of connections who will give her every possible chance. But most of all, I think the magic demands it.

JP van der Merwe

JP van der Merwe is a young rider who has steadily been making a name for himself among South Africa’s jockey ranks. His career took something of a quantum leap when he secured a last minute engagement to ride Smart Call in the 2016 Gr1 J&B Met and delivered the goods with consummate ease.

About JPJuan-Paul van der Merwe is

the son of Andre and Dalene van der Merwe and the eldest of their three children. He was born in Johannesburg on 28 December 1990, but when he was 9 or 10, his family relocated to Port Elizabeth.

He speaks in clipped, heavily accented English, but it is clear he is a very determined young man with a solid head on his shoulders. JP cites his father as a big influence on his career choice.

“I was always small and my father thought I could be a jockey. I think he tried, but it never happened. My father said I should apply and at that time we were living in PE. I went to the Academy and applied. In the first year they didn’t take me, but I applied again the next year and the second time they accepted me.”

Like another blonde bomber, the young man also attended primary school Altona Primary Daniel Pienaar. “I was in grade 5 or 6 and Piere was on suspension and came to PE to visit his family. My old headmaster and Piere were friends and he told Piere to ‘come and have a look, we have another jockey here.’”

Piere duly stopped by and had a look at JP’s shoe size, legs, height and weight and said he thought he should give it a try. “He’s kept an eye on me ever since. In fact, most of my seniors are quite good to me,” he adds modestly.

Early careerAfter finishing his basic

training at the Durban academy, JP moved to the Cape Town Academy under the eye of Vince Curtis and completed his time under Robert Moore and Gary Waterston.

“When you race once a week like in some centres, it’s very difficult. Joburg has a lot more racing and with Kimberley and Zim always available, you learn things faster.”

Once he qualified, JP spent a year in Johannesburg and says, “I was doing OK, but I wasn’t happy and think I needed a break. There was a lot of pressure, things weren’t

happening for me and it was starting to get to me, so I looked around for something else. Tex Lerena helped me out and got me two opportunities – one in Mauritius and one in Dubai. I opted for Dubai and went and rode there. It never lasted long and in the end I was only there for 10 days. The stable I was riding for had a very small string and I thought I’d rather come back, but it was an awesome experience and I raced at Jebel Ali and Meydan.”

When I came back, I heard Lloyd Lunn was looking for a jockey. I used to go well for him as an apprentice, so I went to Durban for 6 months. I did some work for Glen Kotzen in Durban and Glen said he needed a jockey for Cape Town, so I came down for 8 months. Cape Town is hard and there’s not a lot of racing, so I moved back to Joburg and it’s been going well ever since.”

JP currently rides work for a number of top flight Joburg strings including Michael Azzie, Alec Laird, Sean Tarry and Mike de Kock. He doesn’t currently have an agent and prefers to do his bookings himself.

“It’s quite nice. I mostly ride work for those four trainers and either they’ll let me know about rides or I’ll ask them at noms. I’ve had agents before and it didn’t work out – it’s a bit like having a middle man and in the end, the trainer’s not too sure what’s going on, I’m not too sure what’s going on and it’s not ideal.”

Riding engagement

With Smart Call’s regular rider Weichong Marwing benched due to a back injury, there was a glaring blank in the slot for the jockey’s name and which caused increasing speculation as the D Day of the Met approached. With the public in the dark about the filly’s riding arrangements, what did things play out from his side? “I rode her a lot at work, but never in a race,” he explains.

“Obviously Weichong is having a back problem and early last week I spoke to Mr Laird and said ‘Is there any chance I can ride the filly?’ He said it should be fine, but that he’d need to speak to Miss Slack.

On Wednesday Mr Laird phoned to ask whether I would be in Cape Town on Saturday and he said there was a big chance I might be riding, but I was never on her at that stage – he only put me on late on Saturday morning. I was always going to come down for Paul Reeves, but it wasn’t until I landed and checked scratchings, that I saw I was on for the first time.

“The first thing I did was phone Weichong to ask him for advice. Myself and Weichong have got a good relationship. We understand each other and as my senior, he’s always had my back and given me advice. When I phoned him, he was very helpful and gave me very good advice. We were drawn 8 and all the fancied horses – Futura, Legislate and Legal Eagle - were on our inside, so the plan was to try and slot in behind one of those three.”

SaturdayAs it was his first ever Met

ride, how did the nerves hold up? “The thing is, I only got put on at 9am of the morning of the race. Usually for a big race you know 2 or 3 weeks in advance and the pressure builds, but because I picked up the ride so late, I never actually got excited and never felt any pressure. It was a filly against the boys and she’d never run against them before, but there was no pressure on me. The only instructions from Miss Slack were to bring her back safe and to pat her a lot!”

Asked what it was it like to be part of the jockey’s parade and all the big race razzmatazz for the first time, he answers, “To be honest, I didn’t enjoy the formalities. It all takes so long and I just wanted to get on the filly and do my job.”

He confirms all the reports of the filly’s easy temperament. “She’s never done anything wrong. She doesn’t rear, doesn’t kick. She used to be a bit keen, and used to over race a bit, but that’s about it.”

The big race“We came out a little bit

sluggish, but then got over quite nicely and sat behind Legal Eagle. Master Sabina bumped us a few times coming around the bend and she got a

little keen, but it was nothing serious. By the 1000m Anton used Legal Eagle, so I followed and joined him and at the 300m and when I saw Legal Eagle was off the bit, it was unbelievable. The rest was actually quite easy. I got to Anton and by about the 300m, I let her go and she quickened from there. I didn’t even have to give her a few slaps, she’s so good. You can see I start looking around quite early, but ja, the further we went the further we won by.”

As he crossed the line, JP placed his fingers across his lips, which made for some fun front page photographs, but is there any special significance to the gesture?

“You can’t stand up and salute anymore or they’ll fine you. Across the line I just wanted to do something and I had to come up with something unique, so that was it.”

With a total of one ride and one win in the J&B Met, JP is currently on a 100% strike rate. A jockey’s first Grade 1 is always a milestone and can have a significant impact on his career. “I still can’t believe it – I think I’m still waiting for it to kick in,” he says, still sounding a bit shell-shocked. “It’s my first Grade 1 win. I’ve been having a good season and been just under the top 10. I haven’t got an agent, and I’m getting good horses, if not the top rides, but one needs a big one like that. Obviously you are what you ride, but you can work as hard as you like and think you’re doing everything you should - getting a Gr1 win just gives you the confidence that you’re on the right track.”

Reaction“There have been so many

phone calls and messages. I saw a lot of people while I was in Cape Town, but my phone battery died at about 10pm on Saturday night, so it all piled up. I’m still clearing stuff off the phone. My family are very chuffed for me. I haven’t seen them yet – they’re down in PE and it’s a bit difficult getting time to get down

there, but my mom phoned in tears and they’re all very happy.”

Asked whether any of the younger van der Merwe’s might follow in his footsteps, he laughs and says ‘No, being a jockey is definitely not for my younger brother. He’s not into sport.”

Future ProspectsA Grade 1 means a huge

amount on any jockey’s CV, but for someone as young, competent as JP with the all-important advantage of being a light-weight rider, the achievement will not only give him a huge confidence boost, but presents a golden ticket to a lot of new opportunities. “After winning a Gr1 like the J&B Met there are a lot of doors I can open. My CV is going to look good and I will try and send it to Singapore and places like that. I must send my CV everywhere.”

Back to the grindstone

He’s not had a great deal of time to absorb it all yet, but racing

life moves on quickly and by the time we catch up with the newest member of the J&B jockey honour roll, JP is en route to Kimberley.

They say you’re only as good as your last ride and when your last ride was the J&B Met, it’s a good time to keep the momentum going.

Trainer Corrie Lensley must have been thrilled to leg the 2016 Met winning jockey on his string on Monday and from 6 rides, JP brought home a winner and 2 seconds – not a bad day at the office!

Asked whether there were any particular horses he liked that folks could follow going forward, JP selects Greek Legend in the Michael Azzie yard, saying “He’s one of my nice ones and is just coming back from injury.”

He cites Splendid Garden, also from the Michael Azzie yard, as “also another champion. He’s a bit hot in the gates – he rears up and does stupid things, but he can run.”

Marchfield’s total places him well clear of runner up Not Bourbon, with former G1 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Mast Track finishing back in third position on the Canadian table.

Former French G3 winner Earnshaw was third ahead of former G2 Charity Mile winner Mujaarib, and the winner stopped the clock in

acing so often imitates the ups and downs of life, as do Hollywood blockbusters – and Mike, speaking after the meeting, told how the

evening’s treble-scoring high was harshly and unexpectedly balanced by two lows.

Royal Ridge, who ran on powerfully for third in the Bab Al Shams, collapsed and died of a heart attack while being hosed down after the race. Rock Cocktail was not persevered with in the closing handicap – he was pulled out of the race before the bend and found to have broken his pelvis.

Mike lamented: “Royal Ridge ran the best race of his career in Dubai. He looked very well and came running along hard late in the contest. Jockey Dane O’Neill came back full of praise afterwards, explaining how well Royal Ridge had felt accelerating under him. Moments later the horse was dead.

“Rock Cocktail was taken to the Equine Hospital and we’ll be waiting for a report on his condition.These incidents just brought us back to earth after a truly mesmerising evening, our runners made us very proud tonight,” he said.

Great RecordForries Waltz (Grey’s Inn)

gave the stable a fifth successive win in the Al Rashidiya over 1800m on turf – an eighth win in total – and racing fans around the world were treated to a duel between the South African-bred under Christophe Soumillon and the Aussie-bred South African Ertijaal in the hands of Paul Hanagan.

Mike said: “Fitness prevailed over class tonight, Forries Waltz got the better of Ertijaal, but the runner-up was impressive too and he will make big improvement after this. He has a sand pedigree, being by Hard Spun, and we’ll keep the sand in consideration when we plan the rest of his campaign.

“Let’s not take anything away from Forries Waltz. He rose to the occasion in good, solid style and is becoming a horse of note. Well done to my partners Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and Chris Gerber and kudos again to Rennie Price, a small-time quality breeder whose heart would have skipped a few beats tonight. For a breeder, there’s nothing like international success to crown hard work in this competitive industry.”

ON Wednesday 20 January 2016 the National Horseracing Authority (“NHA”) held its Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) and a Special General Meeting (“SGM”). I was present at both meetings.

In my opinion all the issues which were required to be put to the vote by members of the NHA at the AGM and the SGM were of great importance to some, if not many members.

I was disappointed in the way that the NHA board dealt with the issues REQUIRED to be decided. To put it simply, the NHA :-

1) Did not allow any of the issues raised by Mr Goosen and Dr Katzwinkel for the AGM, to be put to the vote, despite members having been asked to

a time of 107.85. Forries Waltz has now won twice from three oDubai outings and he has been nominated for all of the

Rosedene Stud’s red hot sire Greys Inn was once again to the fore at Meydan on Thursday.The champion’s talented son Forries Waltz made it five wins from just six outings when he captured the G2 Al Rashidiya over 1800m, comprehensively defeating former G1 Investec Cape Derby winner Ertijaal into second place.

Marchfield Leads The Way

Moutonshoek’s exciting young sire Marchfield, whose first crop are now yearlings, ended 2015 as the Champion 2nd Crop Sire in Canada.

Tperformers as Afleet Express (G1 Travers Stakes), Bullsbay (G1 Whitney Handicap) and All American (G1 Emirates Stakes) –to name a few.

To date, the millionaire and dual champion has been represented by 21 individual winners, including the classic placed colt Field Of Courage –and the best looks yet to come from Marchfield and his progeny.

2) Started the process of voting on the SGM issues but put a hold to it when it was suggested by Mr Du Plessis of Phumelela that there was no need to vote on the issues as the board did not obtain a 2/3 majority as required by the Constitution.

So that put an end on issues which members were specifically asked to cast a vote.

It will take me a good few hours to type out what transpired at the meetings.

For the past two weeks I have scoured websites to see what has been reported about the events of the AGM and SGM.

For its own reasons, the NHA has failed to notify members regarding what transpired at the two meetings. I thought that the NHA board would regard notice or a report back to members as being essential and mandatory.

Members live throughout RSA and expect some sort of notification. The issues to be discussed and voted on at the SGM were of major importance. Clearly, the lack

of communication of the NHA shows that it has a different understanding to me about keeping members up to date.

Mujaarib was nosed out of third in the race, giving of his best again, and he runs like a horse who can win again over 2000m. While the limits of the Carnival may not allow this, he’s a happy horse, as Mike has noted, and his connections and supporters will be hoping their game seven-year-old can pull off another win wherever he is placed next.

Another horse who is clearly enjoying the benefits of maturity is Mohammed Khaleel ’ s e ight-year-old Anaerobio (Catcher In The Rye), described by Mike as “a member of our family”. Soumillon, also at the peak of his powers, drove long arms and a swinging whip into this old-timer in pursuit of free-striding Banaadeer and caught him on the line to win by a short-head, the ill-fated Royal Ridge a further three-quarters back in third.

“Anaerobio responded to Christophe’s urgings like a horse half his age. He could’ve shirked the issue and turned it up, but he fought like a Trojan to win his fourth race for us, the ninth of his career. Just when we thought of retiring him he’s shown us he’s not done yet!”

Khaleel told Dubai Racing: “I am so lucky to have this horse and he is a real favourite of my family and in the yard. He had 60kgs to carry tonight which was a concern for me but he is a real star and has been a great servant to us all.”

Banaadeer came close to giving Sheikh Hamdan his second win at the meeting following Alareef ’s success in the opener. With his good five-furlong speed Banaadeer had his rivals off the bit a long way out and he was arguably unlucky to have bumped an older piece of cast iron with a point to prove. “This was more like it and Banaadeer saw it out. We’re very happy with this run, he’ll have his confidence back and we’ll have more options now,” Mike said.

Good OpenerAlareef (Stronghold), with

all recently-added equipment removed, posted his first Dubai win in a 1400m Handicap on dirt that opened proceedings. “We’ll look for another suitable handicap for Alareef, he probably won’t qualify for the bigger races,” Mike assessed.

One more runner who made his presence felt on the night was Meydan newcomer Liquid Mercury (SAF), who finished just out of the money in a

Handicap over 1600m. The imposing grey by Trippi was Gr1 placed over 2000m and won a Gr3 over 2400m in his home country, which makes this debut at international level very promising.

Anyone who has seen the 1959 box-office spectacular Ben Hur will remember the fearless Charlton Heston crashing through enemy lines on a chariot pulled by awesome white horses. was a R200 000 buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale.

His sire Gimmethegreenlight was a top class racehorse, who was as brilliant as he was precocious. Gimmethegreenlight reeled off four wins on the bounce as a juvenile, with his winning streak including the Listed Betting World Somerset 1200m, where he beat dual Horse Of The Year Variety Club into third.

Gimmethegreenlight, a little unlucky when narrowly beaten in both the G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes and G1 Golden Horseshoe at two, trained on well to become the first 3yo in 40 years to win the prestigious G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate –a race also won by seven time champion sire Jet Master.

was the mighty Variety Club, who not only won the LQP the very next year but who went on to become the first international raider to win Hong Kong’s G1 Champions Mile.

BVarsfontein Stud’s exciting young sire Gimmethegreenlight became the second of the first crop sires off the mark on Sunday, when his son Skip The Red showed an impressive turn of foot to win a maiden juvenile plate over 1000m at Greyville.

he is the first Kingmambo (sire of Ideal World) line descendant to win the Cape’s showpiece, with her victory coming just days after her grandsire’s death.

Another son of Kingmambo, Henrythenavigator, had a smart looking local stakes winner this

weekend when Ten Gun Salute justified favouritism to land the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap at Greyville on Sunday.

Big In JapanKingmambo sons’ success is not limited

to South Africa either - his son, King Kamehameha, is currently the leading sire by stakes in Japan.

Interestingly, Smart Call is also the latest star bred on the potent Kingmambo/Sadler’s Wells cross, with her broodmare sire, Horse Chestnut, being a grandson of the mighty Sadler’s Wells himself.

Other notable performers bred on this potent cross include 2000 and 1000 Guineas winners, Henrythenavigator and Virginia Waters, French superstar, Divine Proportions (whose son Eightfold Path is currently standing

at the Scott Bros in KZN), Japanese Horse Of The Year, El Condor Pasa, top sprinter, King’s Apostle, and Derby/Arc hero, Workforce, to name but a few.

Last year’s Gr1 Canadian International winner, Cannock Chase, is another top class performer bred on this cross, and he is actually bred on similar lines to Smart Call.

Destination, otherwise a somewhat poor sire, made headlines this year as a broodmare sire when his maternal grandson, Golden Horn, (Cape Cross) became Cartier Horse Of The Year. Another top performer out of a Dubai Destination mare is 2015 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, Postponed (Dubawi), while Dubai Destination mare, Eastern Joy, has a pair of group winning fillies to her credit already.

Another son of the sire, Lemon Drop Kid, is another promising broodmare sire. The former US Champion is maternal grandsire of 29 stakes winners, with this tally including the G1 winners,

Lochte (by Sadler’s Wells line sire, Medaglia D’Oro) and Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality).

A former French 2000 Guineas winner and conqueror of the mighty Zafonic (Gone West), Kingmambo has also left his mark in South Africa. His sons have produced a number of high class South African runners, including the above mentioned Smart Call, as well as fellow high class gallopers Rudra, Same Jurisdiction, Virgo’s Babe, Laverna, Priceless Jewel, Sanshaawes, and Pierre Jourdan, among others.

Kingmambo mare, Peace Bell, (an own sister to ill-fated four time G1 winner Campanologist and another out of a Sadler’s Wells mare) is the dam of G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes winner Peace Bell (Trippi), while Parade Leader is broodmare sire of G2 KZN Fillies Guineas winner, Alexis (by Sadler’s Wells’ grandson Dynasty).

Kingmambo was one of the few sires whose stock proved capable of winning at the highest level the world over. His 12 classic winners won in five different countries, and his G1 winners scored at the highest level in Australia, Britain, France, Ireland, Germany, Japan and North America.

It will be interesting to see how Kingmambo’s legacy grows further in South Africa over the years to come.

The win of Smart Call (Ideal World) in Saturday’s Gr1 J&B Met provided the recently deceased sire Kingmambo with yet another cornerstone in his career.

There were a number of very easy victories in the soft going at Scottsville on Sunday and none more so than that of ALDRIC in the MR68 Handicap over 1000m. In what proved to be the fastest of the five races over the distance on the afternoon, James Goodman’s 6yo was soon positioned close to the speed. He put his head in front going through the 300m and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by almost nine. Another to win with lengths to spare was the newcomer EBTIHAAL in the opening maiden juvenile plate over 1000m. Soon up handy despite being a little slow into stride, Mike De Kock’s charge struck the front at the halfway mark and won comfortably by three. The faster of the two maiden plates over 1000m was the boy’s division won by COLD SHOT. Nibbled at on course into 7/1 from 10’s, the Western Winter gelding was soon at the head of affairs. He was briefly headed by the more fancied PRINCE GEORGE 250m out, but quickly regained the lead and went on to score by a length.TITBITS

The 8/10 favourite CAMOMILE won the second division of the girl’s maiden 1200m without really having had a race.Lightly raced NATAL showed a very nice turn of foot when getting up late to win the MR86 Handicap over 1000m.

How Low Can You GoFairview 26th January

The fastest of the three 1600m races on the poly track on Tuesday was the MR68 Handicap won by QUEBIANGO. Supported into 11/2 from 10/1, Alan Greeff’s charge raced fifth during the early part of the race. She took up the running as they approached the 300m marker and comfortably accounted for the running on NIGHT FALL by a length and a half.

Surprisingly the faster of the two 1300m handicaps was the MR76 affair won by the 5yo CRESCENDO. Freely available at 8/1 on the off, the son of Act One raced in midfield for most of the journey. He quickened well at the top of the short home straight and got up nicely late to beat the front running REBEL HOUSE by three quarters.

The biggest winning margin on the eight race program was just the two lengths recorded by CHELSEA in the MR59 Handicap over 1000m. Once rated some 43 points above her current mark of 44, the Rebel King mare was always in touch with the leaders. She quickened nicely early in the straight and won going away by two after striking the front 100m from home.TITBITS

Having her first outing since relocating from the Western Cape, SILVER DREAM only had to be pushed out when win-ning the opening maiden plate over 1600m by a half.Another former Cape Town campaigner DRAGONSTONE fairly flew from the backend of midfield when getting up late to win the MR76 Handicap over 2200m.

Bang On TargetTurffontein 26th January

They raced on the old stand side track on Friday evening where the fastest of the four 1400m races was the MR80 Handicap won by KINGS ARCHER. In the rear early on the A P Arrow colt ran on stoutly over the final 400m and after a thrilling tussle with the newly installed favourite MY TREASURE, he only got the verdict on the nod.

The faster of the two 1000m events was the conditions plate won by MOOFEED. Sent off favourite at 33/10, Mike De Kock’s charge raced in the backend of midfield during the early part of the race. He ran on strongly when given rein and did well to reel in the free striding MOD BARLEY close home.

The one remaining race was a pinnacle stakes over 2450m and here an upset was to be had when ELUSIVE FLYER registered his second career victory. On leaving the stalls it was the rank outsider of the party SHIMMERING GEM who elected to make the running whilst Stuart Pettigrew’s charge raced close up in third. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m pole and kept on strongly late to score by a length and a quarter.TITBITS

The 3yo CHAMPIONS CUP won the maiden plate over 1400m go-ing away by a length and a half.

A maiden plate over 1400m on the poly track got proceedings underway on Wednesday afternoon and here we saw a very easy victory for the second favourite RULER OF THE SKY. Taken straight to the front by Anton Marcus the daughter of Judpot led throughout. She was two lengths clear coming of the bend and despite the efforts of the chasing pack over the final 400m, she extended her advantage to five and a half.

The afternoon’s feature event was a MR92 Handicap over 2000m (turf) and with only two of the eight runners not in under sufferance, it wasn’t surprising that one of them won. One of these two well treated runners was PRINCESS VARUNYA and it was she who landed the spoils. Looking to extend her winning sequence to four here, the daughter of High Chaparral was always handy. She was ridden to lead as they

approached the 300m marker and won well by two and three quarters from the running on BARCELONA BABE.

Two of the four races on turf were run over 1600m and quickest home here was GUILTY AS CHARGED in the MR86 Handicap. Easy to back at 8/1 on the off, Duncan Howells’ charge raced in midfield early on. He quickened well at the top of the short home straight and in what proved to be a real thriller he only got the verdict over SOVEREIGN REIGN (came from the rear and the rider dropped the rein 150m out) by the narrowest of margins.TITBITS

Returning from a seven month layoff here, the Sean Tarry trained ZAVARONI won the 2000m maiden plate with authority by two and three quarters.

Four of the nine races at Thursday’s inside track meeting were run over 1200m and the fastest of these on my clock was the bill topping MR93 Handicap won by the progressive AFRICAN RULER. Seeking a hat-trick here the 3yo son of Trippi made all.

He had to be hard ridden in the latter stages of the race and only held on by a neck from the all-out KAPITAN.

The faster of the two 1700m races was the novice plate won by the very well weighted LOCK HIM UP. Rated 16 points higher earlier in his career Sean Tarry’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed.

He put his head in front at the 100m marker and with the rest some six lengths adrift, he beat

the front running THE BIG EASY by a half. There was also two races run over 1400m and stopping the clock in the fastest time here was FIRSTTIMESACHARM when registering her second career victory in the MR68 Handicap.

Taken straight to the front by Gavin Lerena, the daughter of Antonius Pius led throughout. She led by a length for most of the journey and tripled that advantage when given rein 200m out.TITBITS

The 3yo REVELATION won the maiden plate over 1700m with authority by six and a half.PRINCESS PEARL only had to be pushed out when winning the MR68 Handicap over 1400m very cosily by three and three quarters.
