MISSION SUNDAY

Mission Sunday 2015

Today is arguably one of our most important Sundays of the year. It’s “Mission Sunday.” If you are new to the congregation, the Roebuck Parkway congregation sets aside this one Sunday a year to give to missions. This collection funds our mission efforts, including the annual Belize campaign. Last year there was a very gen-erous offering of over $85,000. Today we have a goal of $90,000. Let’s rise to the occasion

as we give for the cause of saving lost souls.

Welcome to the Family

We are happy to report that Walter Funnes was baptized a couple Sunday evenings ago. Walter has been through some recent Bible studies and we are so happy he has re-sponded to God’s direction for his life. He, along with his wife, Grissel, and their children

Hamlet and Freida make up a great Christian family!

Senior Recognition

This afternoon, during the 1:00 service, we will be recognizing the class of 2015. This is always a special service as we honor the seniors and hear about their exciting plans for the

future. After the service, there will be a reception in the large fellowship hall in their honor.

Church Picnic

The annual church picnic will be on Saturday, May 9th at the Trussville Mall. After skipping last spring (in order to have a fall picnic before our 100th Anniversary last Sep-tember) we are back on track for our traditional spring church picnic. Christian Ethics – Euthanasia Euthanasia is the Greek word meaning “easy death” or more popularly, “mercy killing.” It is the ending of a life mercifully when a person is hopelessly ill or injured in or-der to hasten the relief of death. However, some would extend it beyond these boundaries to include those who are experiencing pain or continuing pain. They may not be terminally ill but they are in pain and they would rather die and be free of that pain. Euthanasia is applied to three different concepts: 1.) Death with dignity, 2.) Mercy killing and 3.) Death selec-tion. The first of these is passive. It is allowing a person to die with dignity. This involves withholding of help that might preserve life. This is the more difficult to understand for many people. Example: a person is injured in an acci-dent. He is rushed to the hospital and put on a life support system. The machines do the breathing and other bodily functions. The doctors say, “There is no hope. We recom-mend the removal of the life support system and allow them to die.” The second is what we normally call mercy killing. This is active euthanasia. It involves the intentional use of medical technology to cause death or it may involve the withdrawal of normal reasonable and prudent medical care in order to speed up death. Another man has kidney failure. Every week he must go to some medical facility and be connected to a machine that will filter out all the impurities and poison from his blood and then pass the blood back into his body. The man is unhappy with the suggestion and he wants to die. The doctor will not give him a drug to kill him, but he simply refuses to connect the man to the machine. The poison in the blood builds to a higher level until finally the man dies. A child is born with a defect. It will die if surgery is not done to save it. The surgery is simple. The surgery can be done quickly and the child can be saved. However, the child will live with that defect all his life. “It is best,” the doctor says, “to not do the surgery and allow the child to die.’ The parents accept the word of the doctor. No sur-gery is done and the child dies. Active euthanasia involves taking purposeful actions to end a person’s life. This is illegal in most states but many doctors and others are pushing to have it made le-gal everywhere. This would involve the actual killing of another individual to relieve their suffering. Most doctors, in favor of this, suggest the use of drugs that would ease the person into death without the violence of a gunshot or other such violent action. For this article we will be inter-ested primarily in active euthanasia.
