    Hi Everyone,

What a busy past month… there are so many events, meetings and work parties going on you can keep very busy and enjoy yourself all at the same time. Please make sure you regularly check the calendar of events to see what is happening in your area. If you have an event coming up make sure it’s listed in the calendar with contact information. We have a lot of new members who would like to join us but so many times we just assume they know what is happening or where to go. Let’s all take the time to detail our events, work parties, etc. You might be surprised how many longtime members don’t know details but after so long don’t want to ask.

Since my last article I had the opportunity to attend the memorial service for John VanVynck from Thunder Trucks. John has been a very active part of Trail Jamboree for many years in fact, the weekend before his passing he was on his tractor at the Jamboree work party. We will miss him and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

On May 18th the Outcast 4x4’s held their annual fun run at the Elbe Trail System. The turnout was great and looked like everyone was having fun. Thank you to Outcast for allowing Dan & I to help at camp with cooking and registration/door prizes.

The second weekend in May we attended our fi rst competition event of the year. The Tacoma Webfooters hosted their 55th Annual Playday at the Straddleline ORV Park. The Webfooters have been around since the beginning of the PNW4WDA and continue to provide fun events to attend.

At your region meetings, on the forum and through email you have been and will be seeing requests for letters to be written regarding land maters. Please remember when your State Directors, land representatives and region directors ask you to take a minute and write a letter it’s not because they think you have nothing else to do. When there is an open comment period we need to give

our input. The Forrest Service has stated if they hear nothing then we must not care. It only takes a moment to send a quick email or write a quick note and makes a big difference. If you are not sure what to write any of those people would be glad to help you.

Trail Jamboree is approaching and a shirt design has been selected. Thank you to Kayla Hanson from Outcast 4x4’s for coming to the rescue. The design will be posted on the website soon so make sure you order your shirts. Also, if you missed out and didn’t get a spot to attend Jamboree and would like to make sure you get your name on the waiting list. Your reservation and event chairman work hard to clear as many people as possible from the list.

Speaking of chairman, Sid & Kelda are looking for someone who would like to work with them to take over as chairmen. They have served our association well but want to spend some time enjoying the trails and will be stepping down after the 2014 Jamboree. Please let them know if you would like more information on what it takes to chair the event.

Last but not least I want to welcome a couple of new groups, Around the Sound Jeep Club (Region I) has been very busy attending and planning some events (watch the website for more information) and the JBLM Military Jeep Club has been attending the Region II meetings and is preparing their paperwork to join the PNW. We welcome them and all our new and prospective members and hope to see you at an event in the near future.

Here’s wishing you a day full of sun and fun!

Sadly, John VanVynck passed into the 4x4 paradise community to gather with other wheelers on April 25th 2013 at the young age of 61.

He leaves behind his lifetime love of 21 years Lillie Martin; daughter Cynthia, twin sons Matthew & Peter, grandchildren Serena aka Baby-Girl, Aryanna, Brody, Bailey & Brook as well as other family and friends.

As a member of the Thunder Trucks out of Region II, he was President from 1999-2006. John lived in Buckley for years then moving to Naches in 2001 where he & Lillie purchased what John called ‘The Farm’ with plans of living there in their retirement years. He would work on the coast during the week & weekends were spent on the Eastside.

John had many nicknames throughout his years. Each had a meaning behind it. First being Bud to his family, then Toad, Johnny 4-Toes & Farmer John. John was never late for that fi rst beer of the day! As a matter of fact, he was never late for much of anything.

John attended numerous work parties, supported trail clean-ups and worked to help keep the trails & areas open. John enjoyed Trail Jamboree for many years and loved to attend Operation Shore Patrol each September where the Thunder Trucks cooked breakfast for the volunteers.

When Pick Up A Mountain began, he found that this ‘event’ was closer to home & just as fun. Jim Sprick Park on Chinook Pass found John volunteering much of his time. All you had to do is ask John to help & he was there with 110% of his energy, tools & equipment as needed. The Saturday before John passed away he was on his tractor working at the Jamboree work party.

Each year the weekend before Thanksgiving, John & Lillie would host what is named “The Apple Squeeze”, PNW4WDA members, friends & family gathered for the weekend. He would provide a bin or 2 of apples for everyone to hand crank out juice in the antique apple press & take home. Friday evening he would make up a pot of soup that could feed then entire town of Seattle! The next morning, they’d cooked up a breakfast that had a menu of a restaurant. Campers would then go on a small trail ride & come back to yet more apples to press & of course more delicious meat & potatoes that John & Lillie would cook up.

Everyone enjoyed participating and if you went away hungry there was something wrong with you. Usually you were so full you couldn’t eat for a week, John would make sure of that! Sunday morning brought Strawberry Pancakes w/whipped cream and the squeezing of any leftover apples before heading home. Lillie plans on keeping the tradition alive in Johns honor with a few minor changes.

His children Cynthia, Peter & Matthew & their families became part of the 4x4 family when together at the farm or on a trail ride. His passing will truly leave a void in the community & PNW4WDA. John never asked for much of anything. If you would like to make a donation in his name to the Children’s Shriners or the Buckley Eagles, please do so as John would certainly appreciate you’re kindness. ~

Once again the clock has not stopped ticking. No matter what happens the sun will rise and set and the day ends and without hesitation another month is gone. Once again it is impossible to regain the lost days back so apparently I have to accept; it is May and not only is it May but it is all but over.

The good part of the month of May is I will be once again be at Christmas Valley Sand Dunes. A place that will surely strengthen the muscles on the right leg to its full strength for the remainder of the summer months as we all are squeezing the gas pedal to its limits. Not a hundred times but thousands of times these muscles will fi nd the fl oor boards over and over again till the bottom of the right foot will be quite sore well before the end of May. The good thing considering the pains affl icted on the right foot; every driver will be grinning from ear to ear. So what if each will have a happy step in their stride every time the right foot hits the ground.

Man, woman, child or an old timer it won’t matter how many times they’ve been to the top the smile will be genuine and each will have a new story to tell around the campfi re. If I had a wish it would be simple; to see all who have been here to be here one more time for one more run up Toyota Hill or perhaps another time through the Junipers. What a grand place this is and be assured the riders and drivers will have countless stories to tell those who stayed home on the couch.

Creek-n-Trail will be in full swing by the

time you read this. Hopefully all will have a pleasant ride through the forest and once again the Class II users will have tall tales to tell around the campfi re and to those who could not attend.

Ground Hog Rock Crawl had a big face lift the fi rst weekend in May. Patrick Hughes brought out his giant excavator and moved tens of thousand tons of rocks from here to there. Making one new course and adjusting others back into place. There is no way the Class II community can thank him enough for his work at Ground Hog. That machine runs on pure magic when he is at the controls. Not sure how he does it but the results on the ground is simply amazing. Might mention here it is quite fun to watch the big machine as dips, dives and spins to and fro just like a giant golden goose washing itself on the pond bank. Patrick was a PNW member in his youth and we sure miss him around the campfi res.

John Zigler ran the backhoe non-stop for hours and hours. He reworked the staging area, parking lot, vender area, new camping area and the spectator area. His plan was to turn the pit into a user friendly area for OHV users to use and it turned out very well. From the vending area, registration, camping and spectator area is a whole different area that will provide three times more area for our use.

John and Patrick have made a new route for the contestants to enter the pits without going through the vendors or spectators. This new route will help the contestants to get back and forth for repairs.

While John was doing the rearrangements of the above items; Slim and Neil brought their tractors out and they were put to use leveling the two major camping areas and the new camping area. Once they were done upgrading the camping area it was time to rework the parking. The parking lot was improved to hold at least several hundred vehicles in an orderly fashion that will enable the parking attendants to actually park cars on level land. Before it was a mess for cars and many would get stuck and that will not happen anymore. It is unbelievable how much work they accomplished and how great it now looks. The whole area looks fantastic just like maybe someone is about to have a professional event here at Ground Hog. June 29th $10 dollars a person or $20 dollars a car load!!!

I would like to thank G-Fab for helping Patrick in the pit to route the new lines. Just hope you didn’t make them too hard and the sammies will have to stay in the parking lot. We thank you Kaitlin and Graeme and

Tyler for your time and your efforts.

I would like to thank all of Deschutes County-Four Wheelers for the hard work they put in. It surely shows that you have pride in your accomplishments. Jake, Jeff, Teran, Mona, Brian, Carol you all rocked and the quarry site will be better for it for years to come. Your hands turned this quarry into a place that will be very useful for many. Your work turned out great.

Dan and Ann Haak showed up from Burns and helped out rearranging the rocks and providing a great breakfast for all on Sunday morning. Dan is the Pit boss for Ground Hog this year and his help was appreciated. Ann is in charge of registration at the pit and we all will need volunteers to assist.

Dan Haak will be camping at Ground Hog this year and Monday he and several others will leave and begin an awesome trip to the Steens Mountains for the remainder of the week. The Steens are in the remote South Eastern part of Oregon and they will cover a large portion of this area. It is unsure where they will camp over the Fourth of July weekend but it will be beautiful. If you would like to view this area Contact Dan at 503-351-0280 for what will be a very neat trip. All you need is a stock, well maintained Class II vehicle that can travel easily up to 200 miles in round trips. There is gas and provision in Fields, Oregon which cannot be beat for burgers and awesome milkshakes. All camping is dry camping except at Fields which has a RV Park but one must call ahead to reserve a spot. This is a very scenic trip at this time of the year.

Once again it has been heard that Deschutes County 4-Wheelers meetings are way too political to attend and I will never go back. I have heard this stated over and over and it is incomprehensible to me.

Our club meetings are rarely over hour and a half long and mostly it is a feast of some sort and it is the only time of the month we discuss club business. Anything of importance to the reason of our existing and that is to further Class II access to public lands is always brought up. The time spent on this topic is rarely more than ten minutes and as always one is invited to participate or not. The remainder of the meeting is about what, where, when, our Class II vehicles will be where, when to be there in which all are invited to attend.

How political can one get in ten minutes or so to run someone off? The topic is concerning the vehicle you showed up in whether it has a place to run or not. Is that not important to the operator of a Class II

    vehicle?

So if you hear that statement about your club, the PNW or someone else’s club here is the statement that was replied back to this individual. That club (Deschutes County 4-Wheelers) has done more to enable you access to trails and areas than any other club or organization in “your” area. They keep the trails open to you and all four-wheelers in this area.

So it is apparent to me that if your club is organized and conducts an organized meeting with minutes to establish a particular path throughout its meeting which is continued access for Class II vehicles. If your club meetings are so organized that the times, where, when, your activities will happen are talked about and recorded during the meeting. If visiting before and after the short meeting is concerning you Class II vehicles and your families with others having the same interest. If you have organized work parties to better Class II use or enable Class II use in an area or trail that would allow Class II use in the future. Your Club is most likely political and no one will attend. It occurs to me at this moment that there must be a lot of block heads we are not getting through to. Without our political clubs since I have been in this association; there would be zero access to national public lands in your Class II vehicle in this nation!!! Does that not allow a dim light to turn on somewhere between you non-political ear lobes. It should; it is clubs like ours that stands between access and no access for your motorized access on public lands in the United States of America.

I will state for the record that I am very proud to be a member of a political minded club. A club in the PNW that is dedicated to having a place to wheel, play, and camp on/in public lands. Just thinking aloud here though for those who feel we are too political to join you are becoming a burden to us who are providing you access to public lands. As stated at last meeting ‘we are really getting tired of you sitting in your rigs at our backsides as we build trails before you’.It is our sweat that is dripping onto the ground as you watch, laugh and drink your brew yards behind us. I am glad our political club does not give up or quits but we could use your help as a TEAM of wheelers so much more could be put on the ground for your use.

    Together everyone accomplishes more!

Patrick Hughes Construction out of Madras Oregon worked his magic as he lay out the large boulders and cleared away the crumbly smaller rocks to create new lines and refurbish old ones. Patrick a PNW member in his youth still loves the sport but has a job to do. Raise two beautiful children. We miss Patrick and hope he soon decides the association is a great place to raise kids; especially ones who love to wheel.

G-FAB a local 4x4 fabrication shop who does work for CRAWL and many others came out to lend a hand on lines and advice for the rework of Ground Hog Rock Quarry. These folks compete usually in the completion Groundhog but this year they are helping produce the event. (Future PNW members we are hoping!)

Deschutes County 4 Wheeler’s president (John Zigler) did it all at the reworking of Groundhog pit: he ran a back hoe and ran his cruiser over the new lines and over the reworked old lines. We are so ready for Groundhog Rock Crawl ‘the comepetition’!!!! June 29th free camping, $10.00 a person or $20.00 gets a car load admitted.

Contest for designing the logoHi I’m Brody Morris, chairmen of the future 4-wheelers. If you haven’t heard about the race schedule for next year, I would like to inform that we will be hosting Summer Convention of 2013 (future 4-wheelers). I would like to invite all Future 4-Wheelers to be a part of a contest for designing the logo for the 2013 summer convention shirts and sweatshirts.

2 Dogs Ink would like to sponsor this contest, and the lucky winner will get a prize. The standards for the logo must have some type of racing/off-road theme that has something to do for summer convention, must have “Summer Convention” and “2013” as well.

Please send the logo to my email [email protected], if cannot email the logo please get ahold me via Facebook or call me on my cell phone (360)-451-0830. Thank you all for your generosity and I hope I hear from you all soon.

Beverly Dunes Clean-up & Camp-OutEvery year Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch Association (the non-profi t division of Eastern Washington Adventures) puts on a clean-up at Beverly Dunes to help keep the area open to the public. Camping at Beverly Dunes gives the event some extra fun. Below are three reports of the days the group camped for the Beverly Dunes clean up event.

On Friday April 26th, 2013 volunteers met up at Beverly Dunes ORV Area to set up camp for the Beverly Dunes Clean-up.

Once camp was set up everyone went out to play in the sand dunes. Guido went back to camp and met a guy that just pulled in with a brand new Can Am Maverick. Guido decide to ride along to show the guy the dunes and to check out this new toy. They met up with are group and continued heading into the dunes.

The next thing I knew they were upside down at the bottom on a sand dune. They seemed to be ok but the Maverick was broken. Guido and I headed back to camp to get Guido’s trailer with my JK to get the Maverick out of the dunes. As we were gone the Maverick driver past out and the guys helping him called 911.

By the time we got back out there the driver was walking around. The fi re department took the driver back to camp so the paramedics could check him out. We winched the Maverick onto Guido’s trailer with Guido’s TJ and headed back to camp.

Back at camp there were a lot of emergency vehicles. They checked out the Maverick driver and he seemed to be OK. The driver headed home with his brand new broken toy after the Sheriff was done talking with him.

We did a night run after dinner.

Here are a few pictures I took of Friday:

On Saturday April 27th, 2013 volunteers met up at Beverly Dunes ORV Area around 10 AM for the Beverly Dunes Clean-up hosted by the Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch Association(the non-profit division of Eastern Washington Adventures).

This year the ORV Area had more trash than normal. We had a few other maintenance projects we did with the DNR. There was a lot of volunteers so the work was over by 1 PM just in time for the potluck lunch. The volunteers were Eastern Washington Adventures members, Pegasus Northwestemployees and a few others that just showed up to help.

We would like to thank all the people that came out to help.

Here are a few pictures I took of the Sunday:

On Sunday April 28th, 2013 we jumper into the Jeeps and headed down to Saddle Mountain Sand Dunes to check the area out. The area was very cool with some big dunes. A lot of the dunes on the back sides had steep drop offs with rocks at the bottom. At the top of the main dunes I had a lot of fun in an off camber section going both ways. On the way down past that part I buried the JK in some dry sand and had to be winch out by Colton. We headed back down to play in the lower area. That was a lot of fun.

After we got back to camp at Beverly Dunes, we had breakfast and then played one last time in Beverly Sand Dunes.

This was a great weekend thanks to all who came.

    May 16thTacoma, WA

Director Dan Morris called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence for the sick and departed was observed.

Secretary’s Report: Derrick Clark made a motion to accept minutes as written and posted, Brandon Marek seconded, motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report: Derrick makes a motion to accept treasurer’s report as written and read, Angie Marek seconded, motion passed.

We Did It/Club Power: No report

Naches: Can’t get there yet, Clyde’s been going up there but the hairpin turn on the 70 road is the farthest he’s been able to get (elevation is approx 3500 feet) because of the snow. They have also have been checking into rental equipment prices to use for work parties.

Evans Creek: Work party on June 15, main things to do will be getting a new shelter put in the day use area (will be a 20x20ft). Will need lots of volunteers so head on up there! Lots of snow, still. Host list currently only has 8 clubs on it, still lots of room for more. You can fi nd more about that on the Redneck and Rugrats facebook page, check there for info, updates are done regularly. Pierce County will be patrolling up there this summer, and it will be a new guy.

Elbe: Outcast 4x4 fun run May 18. Some people aren’t following the discover pass rules, make sure you read up on those and keep them in mind! As of now nobody from DNR can haul a trailer till all the company rigs are inspected due to a failure when towing a boat. Also, the person who was designing the new campground quit. Tahuya: Fun run June 15th. Having some issues, DNR is making sure it all gets taken care of. Horse camp has been closed due to a fatal accident, but will re-open soon. DNR is fencing off a lot because people are going too far off the trail and destroying the land very badly. Been trying to keep people on the trails but it’s not working very well. Coming out of south loop it has fences on both sides.

Land Matters: Packets were passed out from Jim about how to send letters and who to send them to. We need to have our opinions in on there and get letters written to keep everything open and in good condition around Naches, Rock Creek and Gold Creek. Milk Creek road is on the list to be fi xed, just deciding who will pay because Forest Service wants access but Fish and Wildlife owns it. Forest Service says they have 2500 miles of road and they say they can only maintain ¼ of it all. Road to Trails is on the list. It costs them $50,000 a mile to destroy a road, versus only $5,000 a mile to turn it into a trail. They can get grants for turning the road into trails. Hopefully we can get some trails in the north end of Mount Snoqualmie & Baker. WTA and wilderness want them turned into trails but only for hikers. We’re signed up to be represented at the

Tuesday August 6th round table style meeting. Jim passed around a signup sheet and got some people signed up to attend that at this meeting. We’ll have to choose the roads that will get shut down and the ones that we get to keep. WTA website shows what they want, which is most of the Naches trails so they don’t have to deal with/hear us. We need to start making it to these meeting and being represented to gain more respect. The web team, Jim, and a few others are working on getting it so you can scan a barcode at the head of a trail and it will download the maps directly to your GPS or Smart Phone. ORV Watch: No report. Letter Writing: Lots of letter writing going on, keep it up!

Way & Means: They got stickers if anyone needs them.

    Membership: No report.

Public Relations: Car show at White River High School May 18. Doing some PNW4WDA education. Jeep Jam at Bruce Titus is June 15. They will have safety classes there too. Also, anyone who buys a jeep gets a free PNW4WDA membership. Vendors, food, etc will be there.

Future 4-Wheelers: Still accepting logo designs, only 3 have been entered. Need to get those in! All the donations for the month of June at Bruce Titus Jeep are going to the Future 4-Wheelers. Competition: 1100 acres at Monroe Adventure Park, it’s a really cool place. Property is really open and fl at. Independents set up tracks already. The park wants to do a Goldendale type race (10 mile multi lap race) at some point. Great spectator place, bleachers are set up and you can see most of it. Under the Hill Gang runoffs will be on OB on Saturday during the Independents race, then barrels Saturday, and then cross country and a mystery event on Sunday. There will also be a social Saturday night, and fun things for the kids to do. Memorial day weekend is Moonshiners race which is at Cadillac Ranch in Rainier, WA. Great job Webfooters at your race, it was lots of fun! Old Business: Webfooters would like to say thanks to whoever showed up to the playday, it was a lot of fun and there was lots of carnage! Working on private camping for OSP, one place they’re looking at has 90 spots and 2 banquet halls, trying to work on prices if we can get a discount for reserving a large sum of sites. We are now setting up goals for the PNW4WDA

to work on making it an even better organization than it already is. Some of the goals brought up were: to continue trying to keep trails open, extending membership to ATV’s and UTV’s, work on increasing amount of people showing up at events and meetings, and marketing us and getting us better known throughout communities. These will all be on the table for discussion. Also, if you have not gotten your 2 PNW4WDA stickers, let someone know! New business: Jamboree: if you are a host and Kelda has your info, then Angie sent you an email about hosting. If you didn’t get that email then talk to Kelda so Angie can get the email to you. If you have an issue let Kristen know and she will take care of it. Rob Stafford made a motion to donate $200 worth of adult and $100 worth of kids door prizes for Jamboree, seconded, motion passed. We are trying to fi gure out a fundraiser for Region 2; a few ideas are being tossed around. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm

    Respectfully submitted,Jessica Bailey, Outcast 4x4

    MAY 14, 2013SELAH, WA

Region Director Earl Nettnin (Desert Rats) called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence for the sick and departed was observed. Earl asked everyone to remember John Van Vynck (Thunder Trucks) who passed away after the Jim Sprick Park clean-up.

GUEST: Michelle King NEPA Planner for the Naches Ranger District.

MINUTES: One correction to the minutes was made. The date for the Naches Trail closure was incorrect. It should have said the trail is closed through June 15th. A motion was made by Ron Rutherford (Jeepin’ Nomads) seconded by Randy Hayes (Sand Commandos) to accept the corrected minutes as printed - motion passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT: given by Sande Nettnin (Desert Rats). All bills have been paid.

COMP: No report was given; however, events are listed on the PNW4WDA’s Web Site and Tri-Power.

MEMBERSHIP: A packet was sent to a club in East Wenatchee; Director Earl Nettnin will contact them and see where things are with them. They want to be involved in work parties.

PNW4WDA’S WEB SITE: We also have a PNW page on Facebook.

CLUB POWER/WE DID IT: Chairman Gary Harting (Desert Rats) would like to remind everyone to please turn in their paper work to him when your club has an activity.

JR. JEEPERS: Teia Ireland (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) said she had nothing to report except she will not be at Trail Jamboree but her sisters will take charge of the event for her.

PR: Chairman Clay Graham (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) said get information to him and he will see that it’s sent out to our alert list. If you get it more than once it’s better than not getting it at all. You have a delete button on your computer.

TRAIL JAMBOREE: No report check the Web site for information.

LAND MATTERSRon Rutherford (Jeepin’ Nomads) reported nothing new in the Ahtanum, the snow is melting and people are wheeling in the area. Ron said he and Clay had attended the Wenas meeting on April 9, 2013; usual discussion on landowner gates being closed etc. All gates will be open on the morning of May 1, 2013.

White and Chinook Pass nothing has changed since the road closures. The Little Naches has been pretty quiet since the road closures. Motor Cycle riding is allowed in the Taneum.

Doug Conner (Roamin’ Chariots) reported that he and Earl Nettnin had attended a meeting on Juniper Dunes with the Franklin County Commissioner Brad Peck and others from the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) offi ce out of Spokane, WA. This meeting was held at Juniper Dunes so they could all see just what they are dealing with. This meeting was called FLAP (Federal Lands Access Program). Linda Clark, Border Field Manager for BLM said getting legal access to the Dunes is a top priority for the district. The Dunes are open; we just don’t have legal access.

Clay Graham (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) reported that the Naneum Ridge Committee was still meeting; their biggest issue seems to be the Elk. Clay reported on the Beverly Dunes Clean-up; pictures are posted on the Web site. Clay said they are going to change the date for the clean-up to fall and the next clean-up will be November 2nd, 2013.

Michelle King (NEPA Planner for the Naches Ranger District) talked about the Travel Management Plan, the Forest Plan Revision, fl ood repair, the Nelli Restoration project, and road closures. Michelle handed out paper work containing information on what the US Forest Service, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is proposing to address on the fl ood damage within the 1700 and 1702 road systems; the comment period is now open.

The documents are available on line at ttp://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/okawen/landmanagement/projects or you can contact Michelle King at the Naches Ranger District. Comments need to be made if you want to see repairs happen instead of decommissioning of roads. The 3300 Road in the Taneum comment period

is almost over; a decision may be made in the next couple of weeks. The 1501 Little Rattlesnake comes out next week with 2 alternatives; alternative A is to decommission the fi rst 5 miles of this road. Alternative B is to repair and reopen the road. After this comes out in the newspaper you will have 30 days to make comments. Michelle said if you have questions that you need answers on before you write your comments please call her and ask for clarifi cation before you write your letters. Even though we write letters encouraging repair etc, the ranger has the ultimate decision on what will happen.

Nelli Restoration project comments are accepted until May 30, 2013. The 1701 is starting logging operations so be sure to use caution when driving on them.

Firewood permits are being issued in Naches and CleElum. However no permits will be sold during lunch hour or after 4 PM. Permits are not needed for Morel Mushroom harvesting for personal use.

The 620 Rattlesnake Work Party July 19th – 21st, 2013 on the 4-wheel drive trail to repair the road going into the campground needs to have a big turnout of at least 40 people per day; materials have been ordered. Some things that we will be doing: bridges need to be fi xed, water bars need to be installed and in a wet section we are going to build a burrito to help harden up the area. This work party is for all users please contact Ron Rutherford (509-966-6305) if you can help. More info will be coming on where to camp. This may require a Discover Pass.

A tentative date for the next TWIG meeting is June 4, 2013 at the Naches Ranger Station.

Blue Ribbon is keeping us updated on the monuments in the Moab area; SEMA is watching things in Johnson Valley where the Marines want to take it over. You will be notifi ed when letters are needed.

Moses Lake Sand Dunes – Ed Massey (Sand Commandos & Hurtin’ Units) reported there have been some changes out there and they no longer have dumpsters; also no drinking in the dunes. Ed reported that about 20 people came to the clean-up and half of them were driving Quads; Ed feels we need to do something to bring them

    into the fold.

Jim Sprick Park clean-up was a success and we got a lot of things accomplished. The Hobo Stew was delicious, thanks to Merrick Graves (High Country Cruisers) for his expertise manning the cook pot. A new person is in charge of the Chinook Betterment Association so we may see some changes in the park.

OLD BUSINESSPick Up A Mountain Co-Chairmen Pam Remley and Alicia Palachuk (Shindig Wheelers) still are looking for help. If you are interested in helping they need someone to help with cooking the corn; organizing vendor displays; helping sell raffl e tickets; being in charge of the bon fi re; and announcing door prize winners. We are having a contest to see who has the ugliest set of Christmas lights that are working; these will be put up in the Midway to help with night lighting. Please contact Pam or Alicia ASAP if you would like to help - Pam (509-658-2496) or Alicia (509-697-4178).

Merrick Graves (High Country Cruisers) stated a test case that went through the court involving an individual with a dual registered vehicle that had a license plate and an ORV tab. The person received a ticket for not having a Discover Pass, took it to court and he won. The state must recognize dual registered vehicles.

NEW BUSINESSPresident Angie Marek asked the

Region Directors to ask their Region delegates for some information on what they would like the PNW to work on this year. Number one –keep our trails open. Number two –expand membership to Side by Sides and Quads. Number three – change our non-profi t status.

Discussion followed on our July meeting date. The meeting falls during Trail Jamboree and is scheduled to be in Moses Lake. After much discussion a motion was made by Ed Massey (Sand Commandos & Hurtin’ Units) seconded by Josh Wesselius (Ridgerunners) that we cancel the July meeting; motion passed. The secretary will send this information to Tri-Power, and put it on the Web Site letting everyone know that our July meeting has been canceled. The rotation of meeting places will remain the same.

The Liberty work party starts May 18th and goes through Memorial week-end. Bring coveralls and/or several changes of clothes because the soot from the fi res will be on everything when we clear the trails.

CLUB REPORTS No club reports tonight – out of time.

FLATHEAD PASS - JIM BRIDGER RANGE, MONTANAAdvertised by the Montana 4x4 Association as a 4x4 ride with the Bozeman Mountaineers over Flathead Pass. The trail is not technical, but expect to bust a few snow drifts!

But, that was before the unusual cold spell bringing snow to the mountains. I was glad for my enclosed ride and heater.

We were greeted by an unusually brisk Sunday morning on the 21st of April 2013; unexpected for mid April. Our designated meeting place at the appointed time came with see your breath introductions with a few and then travel to site two where others had gathered and more introductions of the participants found in all manners of 4x4, as you might see at any run.

Soon we were headed out up the road to our adventure. The paved road climbed and curved with the best of them requiring fi rm throttle and little in any use for any overdrives and most of the trail rigs struggled to maintain allowed speed up the roadway which would seem to be a sports car enthusiasts dream.

After 20 miles or so, we turned off the main road such as it was and traveled a few more miles on dirt road in our road gears yielding to brand new snow as we steadily climbed to approaching 7,000 feet advertised to be the 6955 foot Flathead Pass.

As we began really testing our traction and realizing our brakes were marginal on the snow, we stopped and blew off some air to single digits and grasped our trail gears.

We continued along sometimes sideways towards the edge due to the camber until close to the summit of the pass with our left side view going up four or fi ve hundred feet and the right side dropping off to the valley far below.

As some of us struggled in the drifts at the summit, the others with their big boy toys were able to play and traversed the landscape knowing that all their hard work and investment was paying off.

The rest of us in the fi ve foot of snow, not wanting to concede that our more moderate street friendly 4x4 investments were not competitive in the newly distributed snowfi eld, had lunch provided by the Mountaineers … as we pretended not to notice the big boys traversing to and fro as they pleased.

Straight ahead was our path to continue on our route to the North end of the Bridger Range … I think. But, by then I was thoroughly confused as to our direction except I could tell which way was up and which way was down and we were starting down.

If I understand what our Trail Boss Blair was explaining, Flathead Pass crosses the north end of the Bridger Mountains and connects the Gallatin and Shields River Valleys.

Yes, that Bridger Range was named for that well known guy Jim Bridger, I mostly connected with Wyoming, whom traversed the area as well as hundreds of miles otherwise and I understand got his name attached to many sites in this Bozeman area, as with many others in several states.

I noted a fair degree of sadness, when Blair with head hung down explaining the geography of the area, mentioned that the four wheel drive and motorized community had lost all their trails in the Gallatin National Forest. A very similar story to a lot of our PNW4WDA trail experiences and losses.

As we continued down the trail, we met challenge in the steep snowy trail with signifi cant off camber and snow drifts that kept up the pucker factor as the Mountaineers provided travel spotting and even used their full body language to lean uphill on our rides to avoid going over the bank as we slipped and slid our way down the trail. Indeed, I could feel my Cherokee driver side rear leg lift off the trail, but was assured that I probably would be fi ne if I took it easy; and so it was.

At the bottom of that hill, when we dared remove our white knuckle grip of the steering wheel and look around, one could note that there was signs of civilization with power transmission line running, by my best guess, east and west even though our cell phones seemed to still be out of service. I forgot to ask, but would not be surprised if the power lines followed some named trail or another that was made long before even our friend Jim visited the area.

From our lunch at the summit of Flathead Pass, I understand that we dropped 1,700 feet on the trail over three miles MOL, a little on the steep side especially for snow covered. I believe it was named “Pass” Creek that serpentines alongside the narrow south edge of the trail looking up at abrupt banks on both sides to a couple hundred feet or so as we kind of slid along down the trail on the snow or mud. As we trekked down the trail, I noted immense rock cliffs rising from the canyon walls which would certainly drop a load of snow and cover the trail in an avalanche, which I understood was the history.

As the trail gentled, we came to an opening and area which showed lots of abuse by those visiting by motorized means and leaving refuse of all sort and manner even such as old electronics, which I was told was not there in the fall. The Mountaineers could not let that stand as in concert and without prompting they began fi lling a Toyota pickup with the thrash. It was obvious that this was a common response by the club when their trails were violated. Indeed, when prompted, I was told that a “conservation run” was planned from time to time by all the Montana 4x4 Association Clubs.

Our camera recording the events of the run suffered some debilitation and we may as well have left it home as we found there were no photos of our Montana experience on the camera. Ironically, the only photo available to prove our attendance on the 4x4 run over Flathead Pass was that of the pickup truck full of garbage with Blair and I standing aside.

The Mountaineers proved to be good hosts both for the Montana 4x4 Association convention and dinner held the day before and the trail ride; all thoroughly enjoyed. We must have served our role acceptably as guests, as we and our fellow PNW4WDA members were invited back for further meetings and adventures.

Until next time around, may your trails be delightful.

    Epic

Slim Stout trailered his John Deere tractor and his hard work the 70 some miles to assist his fellow club members rework the quarry in East Fort Rock named Ground Hog. Slim is new to Central Oregon and is newly retired. He runs a Bronco II. Slim is a new member with DC4W’’s and we welcome him into the association

Neil and Carol Gruhlke came equipped with plenty of steam as they helped clear parking lots and vendor space. Volunteers are the association. When you ask what does the PNW do for me??? Here is your answer: it draws volunteers who unselfi shly donate time and dollars and effort to further your experiences on public lands

Oregon Executive Director Randy Drake’s photo with Ann Haak Region 6’s husband Dan Haak of the Harney County High Desert Wheelers. They spent two long days with the other volunteers who reworked the pit at Groundhog on May 5th. There is more parking, more camping space, more vendor space and new lines to crawl with your class II rig!

The two clubs and their volunteer helpers netted the Combined Off Highway Vehicles Operations in Central Oregon over $6500.00 for their (our) program. Volunteers are the friends of our public lands and our federal and state agencies. PNW4WDA members rock!!!
